I've found that the main problem with creating railgun turrets is that they are EXTREMELY fragile. Because of the way Clang interacts with rotors and deformable blocks, even hitting a turret in an armored segment can pop the turret right off the hull. Which is a shame, because I REALLY wanted to make railgun turrets for battleships.
Planetary Railguns like the Laconian railguns from *The Expanse.* sound amazing. Super OP, high RPM, high dmg... *But* as balance they can only *point up,* and have a *100KM* beacon *warning* everybody off. That way the only way to take out the base is to land elsewhere, and perform a *ground assault* Tip of the Spear/Halo: Reach-style :) Unless somebody covered an entire planet - but maybe there's a *limit* of like 5 per planet, so there's always a *defensive gap* somewhere. Players would have to either *find* a defensive gap, or send a *fleet of garbage* at the railgun to overwhelm it like in *The Expanse* S06E06
at 5:10 when jack shoots down the ship, you can see all the engines are still active that are still attached, im pretty sure he just shot a critcal part, which made the ship not be able to hover anymore, because the engines before the shot were still connected so a critical part was hit.
I designed a "revolver cannon" with 4 quickly rotating railguns and sensors that trigger the shots. So all 4 shots come in very quick succession and land on exactly the same spot. You just have to aim a little to the side because the rotation throws off the aim slightly. Haven't tested it in pvp or anything - just a nice "super weapon" in the front of one of my Wh40k ship designs, made to penetrate the massive prow armour of an enemy capital ship closing in.
Hi Jack, can you show us these Defense systems in Action, as in you try to land an Invasion while the AI tries to kill you. Because from what i've seen, anything smaller than the Langley can just pass through after sending in a mini-drone. Feels like this defense-grid is missing Artillery and Autocannon defenses to actually do critical damage with it's reload speed
@@Epin-Ephrine Well if you were really setting these up to defend a base you'd probably have some other sort of AA sprinkled in with it, and even if you didn't you could easily position them in such a way that even if you're over the firing arc for some of them the rest would be shooting at you. They have a pretty long range too, so all you have to do is essentially put them in a large enough box or circle shape to where they can fire at anything in the center that's also almost close enough to the ground to fire on the base or the turrets. That being said, you could just also modify these to be able to shoot straight up so not really defending it as a great design or anything, I just don't think it's a dealbreaker
@@zeph6182 All I'm saying is since it's Space Engineers and not IRL, there's really no reason to add limitations, such as the firing arc when they could easily be adjusted for any angle. That way, you can place them anywhere and not worry about placement too much.
Looks very good though the only issue I see with it is its poor elevation, with something that looks like it would be best for defence against Large Ships, a serious flaw of the design would be enemy coming directly above unless those being attacked can afford multiple emplacements in a wide enough range to cover atop of each other at best.

Hey Jack, got an idea for a warhead missile type. Since a ship targeted by one can only hit the front of them why not put some blocks of heavy armor on the front to protect the payload BUT the rest of it is made with easily destroyable blocks? Might be a good idea cuse it be very hard to hit them from the sides or back and the heavy front could give some penetration power so the payload can REALLY fuck up the target ship's vulnerable insides.
