well said ! of course i stumbled upon this gorgeous imperfect raw and unbelievably talented human when "hi ren" first surfaced on youtube. it literally had me in tears eapecially the ending! im depressive/ recovering addictict and it cut through me even more so the second and third time i listened to it! so many people will benefit from this man now that hea come out the shadows! hes gonna be a huge success!
About this time last year I was in the process of putting together the videos for the Sick Boi album. My friend B**** had just bee made homeless, he was kicked out of his previous flat for having some wild parties, and covering the walls in graffiti. I bumped into him one day and he was full of excitement. "Ive got the sickest place ever to film in" B**** had just moved into a squat in an old shop across the road. He told me the place was massive, and that there was a small homeless community living there. I arranged to go check out the place a few days later. Me and my camera guy Sam headed over, we had to enter through a small side entrance, a big green metal door. There was this kid outside, probably about 18, 19, waiting to get in, obviously twisted on a universe of drugs, who started telling us how his girlfriend had stolen all his things, halfway through the story he broke into a double time rap and told us he was gona be the biggest rapper in Brighton. The big green door flew open, there was screaming, three lads launched another out, covered in blood. I knew him, i'd met him at one of B***'s partys a few weeks before. They told him he wasn't welcome anymore. I guess this was the place. A guy with his hood up got in my face and asked what I wanted, but then recognised me from making music and became instantly cheery. I told him B**** had said it was a good place for filming, and he asked me if i'd like a guided tour, this place already seemed perfect for what I had in mind. The place was massive, 4 underground warehouse floors, an old industrial lift, cables ripped out the walls, and a big cage where I assume they used to keep stock. My guide told me that they'd have organised fights in the cage most nights, they'd get drugged up on ketamine so they couldnt feel anything, and beat eachother till one gave up. I found B**** in the middle of one of the giant ware house floors making a small fire, he was in the throws of addiction at the time and it showed. B**** is undoubtedly one of the most witty and charismatic people I know, but at this point the claws of addiction had sunk their hands in and he was illegible and erratic, ill be honest it was really difficult to see, I love him, and before that i'd tried everything I could to help him, but until people are ready for help you cant. Speaking from a decade of sobriety life can be very beautiful without chemical escapism but I digress. We set up a week later, the shoot was chaotic. During it the 19 year old kid we met outside stole a baseball and cricket bat we were using for props, ran upstairs and smashed through 4 of the upstairs windows. Another person living in the squat proceeded to accuse every member of the crew for stealing her iphone, followed by lots of screaming and kicking, which obviously hadn't happened. Despite this we got through the shoot, making the most of each spot, wrapping up in the early hours of the morning we'd brought something together that looked awesome. The atmosphere was constantly tense, which was perfect. The video ended up one of the best we've ever filmed. It looked way better than if we'd spent a stupid amount of money building a set, because it was real, and that delivered an unmatched rawness. Illest Of Our Time comes out on the 29th of March! Can’t wait for the song to drop, intrigued by the video description. I spent a lot of my teens and twenties living in different squats, some nice, some not so nice. You summed up what squat life can be like pretty accurately. I now work with addicts in homeless hostels, everyday is a different heartbreak but the success stories make it all worth it. Hope you’re still continuing to improve everyday, we’re all thinking of you. And I hope things improve for your friend B.

@@yattaaa641 because being depressed makes your more self reflective and mindful so you do more introspection and get to know yourself better Dark and light sides of yourself and this is always a good thing. So he’s not second guessing anything anymore because he’s done the work on himself due to having depression. So he’s trusting his intuition and getting wise so he’s turned the curse of depression into a blessing 🌱☀️💚

So, Im a 51 year old grandmother and people my age, people older than me and some even younger who refuse to acknowledge any music newer then Fleetwood Mac do themselves a disservice and they miss this, they miss the opportunity to experience something new and valid and vibrant, something that often times actually surpasses what they consider to be the best. Ren and Sam, your music/videos/lyrics are awe inspiring. I found you guys, like many of us via 'Hi Ren' and I've been binge watching for days. If you're able to produce ALL of this whilst managing a god awful medical condition at the same time you should really be the proudest man alive.

My husband has schizoaffective disorder and is currently in a pretty hard psychosis. Ren was recommended since I was looking up vids about schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, so I thought, why not? I'm about 10 songs into a playlist and I'm in awe of this guy's talent! I've never been a fan of "mainstream" rap but Ren's music actually has meaning...not just songs about "hos, money, and guns". He has written music I didn't even know I needed. I'm currently on my porch listening to the frogs in my pond and just waiting on the bottom to fall out again. I don't know how to help my husband so I'm here talking to all of y'all. Y'all don't have to talk back, but it really helps me to know im not alone in all of this. My husband is living in Hell and I cant help him with this. I feel totally worthless. For far too long there simply was no one worthy of it, IMO. I haven't been this stoked by any artist in many decades. I was 13 when the Beatles hit the US - yeah, I'm that old. Still a massive Beatles fan. I have that same deeply thrilled feeling with Ren. As with only 2 other artists (Beatles & Bowie) in my life, it was instantaneous -- I fell utterly in love with Ren's music the very first time I heard him. I'd forgotten how deliriously joyful discovering a one-of-a-kind genius artist can be.

I’m a 49yo white dude who loves metal and kinda likes some rap maybe if I’m in the right mood. But this guy is just different. This is just fucking brilliant in every way. This lyrics, the beat, the tone, the message, the delivery…it’s genius. And don’t even get me started on the film director. Bro, you've snaked your way into my brain and made me question every taste I've had in music up until this point. When I wake, something you've made is the cadence to my heart beat. When I do something, in my head - your music is the theme song. You've been places, and you're making changes. You're authentic, without question. And I hope that you know you've connected people of all ages. You're a mentor to people twice your age and give voices to the things in rhyme that we can barely put into words. You're a modern day bard, shouting modern day Shakespearian constructs to the world, and you have my utmost respect because it makes you vulnerable, transparent, and genuine. And it puts other aspects you're not even talking about in your music to rest, satisfying more than one side of the argument. An example, "toxic masculinity". You can be strong and show emotion. You can "be a man" AND make room for the harder truths. I feel there is more but just wanted to throw it out there. Thank you for being a better person and making your listeners better for it.

I can only guess due to how little I know, but there's a rap artist who goes by the name NF who you may find that you can appreciate & value for the same or similar reasons. If you decide to give any of his songs a listen, & in case your tastes in listening experiences are comparable to mine, I suggest Googling their lyrics so that you can read them as he raps them (if you're able to read & listen/watch simultaneously). It's something I used to do when I first began listening to rap because I wasn't yet used to the speed at which the lyrics are often delivered so I wasn't yet able to understand the words without reading them; but I also wanted to be able to understand a song's message at the same time that I listened to it because I felt that it allowed me to have a more comprehensive, cohesive, immersive, & emotional listening experience overall... so that's what I did until I eventually learned how to actually HEAR rap lyrics in real-time.

About this time last year I was in the process of putting together the videos for the Sick Boi album.
My friend B**** had just bee made homeless, he was kicked out of his previous flat for having some wild parties, and covering the walls in graffiti. I bumped into him one day and he was full of excitement. "Ive got the sickest place ever to film in"
B**** had just moved into a squat in an old shop across the road. He told me the place was massive, and that there was a small homeless community living there. I arranged to go check out the place a few days later.
Me and my camera guy Sam headed over, we had to enter through a small side entrance, a big green metal door. There was this kid outside, probably about 18, 19, waiting to get in, obviously twisted on a universe of drugs, who started telling us how his girlfriend had stolen all his things, halfway through the story he broke into a double time rap and told us he was gona be the biggest rapper in Brighton. The big green door flew open, there was screaming, three lads launched another out, covered in blood. I knew him, i'd met him at one of B***'s partys a few weeks before. They told him he wasn't welcome anymore. I guess this was the place.
A guy with his hood up got in my face and asked what I wanted, but then recognised me from making music and became instantly cheery. I told him B**** had said it was a good place for filming, and he asked me if i'd like a guided tour, this place already seemed perfect for what I had in mind.
The place was massive, 4 underground warehouse floors, an old industrial lift, cables ripped out the walls, and a big cage where I assume they used to keep stock. My guide told me that they'd have organised fights in the cage most nights, they'd get drugged up on ketamine so they couldnt feel anything, and beat eachother till one gave up.
I found B**** in the middle of one of the giant ware house floors making a small fire, he was in the throws of addiction at the time and it showed. B**** is undoubtedly one of the most witty and charismatic people I know, but at this point the claws of addiction had sunk their hands in and he was illegible and erratic, ill be honest it was really difficult to see, I love him, and before that i'd tried everything I could to help him, but until people are ready for help you cant. Speaking from a decade of sobriety life can be very beautiful without chemical escapism but I digress.
We set up a week later, the shoot was chaotic. During it the 19 year old kid we met outside stole a baseball and cricket bat we were using for props, ran upstairs and smashed through 4 of the upstairs windows. Another person living in the squat proceeded to accuse every member of the crew for stealing her iphone, followed by lots of screaming and kicking, which obviously hadn't happened.
Despite this we got through the shoot, making the most of each spot, wrapping up in the early hours of the morning we'd brought something together that looked awesome.
The atmosphere was constantly tense, which was perfect.
The video ended up one of the best we've ever filmed.
It looked way better than if we'd spent a stupid amount of money building a set, because it was real, and that delivered an unmatched rawness.
Illest Of Our Time comes out on the 29th of March!

Can’t wait for the song to drop, intrigued by the video description. I spent a lot of my teens and twenties living in different squats, some nice, some not so nice. You summed up what squat life can be like pretty accurately. I now work with addicts in homeless hostels, everyday is a different heartbreak but the success stories make it all worth it.

If you're able to produce ALL of this whilst managing a god awful medical condition at the same time you should really be the proudest man alive.

My husband has schizoaffective disorder and is currently in a pretty hard psychosis. Ren was recommended since I was looking up vids about schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, so I thought, why not? I'm about 10 songs into a playlist and I'm in awe of this guy's talent! I've never been a fan of "mainstream" rap but Ren's music actually has meaning...not just songs about "hos, money, and guns". He has written music I didn't even know I needed. I'm currently on my porch listening to the frogs in my pond and just waiting on the bottom to fall out again. I don't know how to help my husband so I'm here talking to all of y'all. Y'all don't have to talk back, but it really helps me to know im not alone in all of this. My husband is living in Hell and I cant help him with this. I feel totally worthless. As with only 2 other artists (Beatles & Bowie) in my life, it was instantaneous -- I fell utterly in love with Ren's music the very first time I heard him. When I wake, something you've made is the cadence to my heart beat. When I do something, in my head - your music is the theme song. You've been places, and you're making changes.
You're authentic, without question. And I hope that you know you've connected people of all ages. You're a mentor to people twice your age and give voices to the things in rhyme that we can barely put into words.
You're a modern day bard, shouting modern day Shakespearian constructs to the world, and you have my utmost respect because it makes you vulnerable, transparent, and genuine. And it puts other aspects you're not even talking about in your music to rest, satisfying more than one side of the argument. An example, "toxic masculinity". You can be strong and show emotion. You can "be a man" AND make room for the harder truths. I feel there is more but just wanted to throw it out there.

Ren.. doubt you’ll see this but I want to thank you for getting this 73 yo Gma of 2 20 yr old grandsons to better understand and appreciate rap. I like (and listen to) all types of music, but I had avoided rap. Your posts, and the gazillion reactions to them, have helped me with how this music is structured.. and how better to understand it. You have such a gift and I believe you know how to best use it. I hope you are able to fully recover from your battle with auto-immune issues.. or at least are able to fully live with them and thrive. Same, my 17 yr old son is always throwing out rhymes at me which I usually try to ignore; BUT I'm 48 and sort of finding out why he likes this type of music. I love music that tells a story, and Ren definitely does that in every new video I've been discovering on YT. Might not understand or keep up with everything, but I appreciate how incredibly talented he and everyone around him must be to put these amazing videos together.

I can only guess due to how little I know, but there's a rap artist who goes by the name NF who you may find that you can appreciate & value for the same or similar reasons.
If you decide to give any of his songs a listen, & in case your tastes in listening experiences are comparable to mine, I suggest Googling their lyrics so that you can read them as he raps them (if you're able to read & listen/watch simultaneously).
It's something I used to do when I first began listening to rap because I wasn't yet used to the speed at which the lyrics are often delivered so I wasn't yet able to understand the words without reading them; but I also wanted to be able to understand a song's message at the same time that I listened to it because I felt that it allowed me to have a more comprehensive, cohesive, immersive, & emotional listening experience overall... so that's what I did until I eventually learned how to actually HEAR rap lyrics in real-time.

I listen to a few rappers from the UK but as far as deep creative music the Beatles or Stones come ro mind and its been a while. Ren opened the door for me, there's some pretty cool people there.
