    1:00 That’s a Sawfish, often called a Saw shark. It’s actually not a shark. It’s a ray. However, rays are the evolutionary cousins of sharks. I just wanted to clear the water. I understand the confusion.

      @Kyler Rogers no,sharks are like bears,they aren't evil,sharks are one of the most ancient incredible species,they dony hunt and want to kill you,if a shark sees you it thit that is a seal or some strange thing,all of the sharks deaths are from blood loss they dind eat the human,and even by that,all the sharks deaths in the last 100 years are smaller than what mosquitoes kill in one day,or way less than human kill in one day,sharks aren't enemies, they are just another wild animal,like a bear a bee a wolf pls save the sharks

    I love how in so many ecosystems, from Yellowstone to the oceans the top predator whether it is sharks, wolves or Tasmanian tigers help the entire ecosystem. I especially like how predators can help prey populations by removing the sick, like in Tasmania where if the Tasmanian tiger was still around it could save the Tasmanian devil by killing contagious Tasmanian devils much earlier in their sickness and preventing disease spread.

  • @leach_

    But dont we overfish every fish? dont get me wrong, that isnt good in any way. But we are removing the same amount of every part of the food chain (except ourselves). So overfishing sharks is only part of a way larger problem having to do with the overpopulation of humans on the earth. Might be a bit brutal, but getting rid of a lot of humans would solve most of our problems.

      Except there wouldn't be any creature on this planet left to make that assessment, so the world wouldn't care. Besides that, what is a better world is completely subjective. How about instead of thinking the world would be better without us, we start working towards the world that we, as humans, perceive to be the best :P

      I guess it depends on how you measure "a better world." If you measure it simply through the amount of biodiversity, then the world hasn't been any better than the Cambrian era. If you measure it by a stable climate, then the world has never really been that good of a place for very long at any given time. If you measure it by the number of extinctions, then our world has been far, far worse.
      Humans are at a turning point now, and things will get better with us here. In fact, things will probably get better *faster* with us here. We have the capacity to do far more good than harm, so try not to be so cynical.

    • @Fabelot1
      @Fabelot1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kaleb Adams True, we have the capacity to basically create "a garden of eden", so to speak. But we also have the power to make this planet more or less inhospitable to life, as we know it, at least. However, I really would like to believe that you're right. Generally people seem to be more concerned about keeping(or restoring, more like), earth in a healthy state. Nonetheless, the majority still have strange priorities. That said, I still believe we need to keep a positive attitude, but we've got work for it and actually find a sustainable solution to the problems, rather than ignoring them.

    To all those people out there saying "you would hate sharks if you got a limb torn off by one": Unless you were swimming in the open ocean(which is very unlikely), u knew the risk of swimming/surfing in a place where there were shark sightings. U knew that there was a chance of u getting bitten by a shark, u were the one who decided to go swimming/surfing there. Stop blaming the sharks. They were only trying to protect their homes. If u get a limb taken off by a shark its ur own god damn fault.

    But now that I know the facts: that they're just apex predators who can reach 50km/h, weigh 1-2 tons, can measure up to 7m, are all muscle, have over 200 serrated teeth, can detect one drop of blood in 100 liters of water, can bite off a human leg in about a second and generally look like a nightmarish, creepy monster...I'm totally cured from my phobia ! Sharks are amazing creatures and they don't mean to eat people, in most cases the shark confused the person as a seal or a dolphin. So many creatures are endangered and no one cares when they should! There's a reason why all the animals on this world exist because they all have a purpose. It would be nice to see more people caring about the environment than other less important things.

    Hi there, I'm a 12 year old boy who loves sharks! I have loved sharks since I was around two or three years old. It is horrible that so many sharks are killed so often and I think that killing sharks should be banned across the world. I think more people should watch more videos like this so they can get more info on sharks. This's how you ( whoever is reading this comment ) can help save sharks. 1# do not buy any products from sharks like shark teeth or shark jaws or shark Fin soup. Make sure if buy a can of tuna the did not use drift nets to catch the tuna, because drift nets kill sharks. 2# join a program or charity that is dedicated to saving sharks. 3# share this video and other media about saving sharks like shark books, shark magazines, and shark videos that involves saving sharks. I'm sorry this comment is so long, but it's worth it to save sharks!

    Doesn't seem accurate at all to say sharks are not dangerous based on how many people are killed a year. Ok "only" 6 people are killed a year, but what is that as a percentage of people who actually met a shark? 6 out of 10? Seems like every other time an Aussie meets a shark they lose a limb. and I guess that isn't even counted if they survive.

    • @besmart
      @besmart  10 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      bmbn mnmbm Lots of people swim with predatory sharks and live to tell the tale completely free of injury. Humans are simply not something that sharks are usually interested in attacking, plain and simple. Misconceptions like "every other time an Aussie meets a shark they lose a limb" are exactly what drives this irrational fear and our destructive behavior toward sharks.

      bmbn mnmbm I've swum/dived with at the very least 4 species of predatory sharks, and probably 100 individual sharks, including 2 great whites, 5 tiger sharks, unknown numbers of bull sharks, and a few other whalers. I still have all of my limbs intact and all of them work just fine. The media loves to drum up fear about sharks, because it sells newspapers or gets ratings, and they are primarily scavengers and coffin chasers (the media, not the sharks), so anything gruesome or horrific is great for business. On average, one woman dies from domestic violence every week in Australia, but that doesn't seem to be front page news. That is more than twice the number of people who have died from shark attacks in the last 12 years, each and every single year. There has been an average of 0.9 people die per year from shark attacks, in the last 50 years. So, since the end of world war 2, about the same number of people have died from shark attacks, as how many people die, each and every year, from domestic violence. A little perspective is a good thing

    • @1SaG
      @1SaG 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +bmbn mnmbm I've seen aerial footage taken over busy beaches with tons of people in the water and sharks near them everywhere. The people didn't see the animals from their POV, so nobody was freaking out. People are close to sharks in the water every day without realizing it and without any incidents.
      Shark attacks are usually down to "misunderstandings". The shark mistakes the shape of a human for a seal and takes a bite. Remember: The shark's only means of exploring a strange object is to bite. He doesn't have hands or feelers. It's also interesting to note that a lot of times, the shark will break off the attack once he realizes his mistake. We're not a good source of food for them. Great Whites couldn't survive on a diet of human flesh, since our bodies have the wrong composition for their needs (not enough fat/energy).
      Plus: Why should we blame the shark for doing what he's supposed to be doing? After all: He's a wild animal and the ocean is his realm.

    Swimming in the sea is definitely dangerous, but a ridiculously low amount of times that people that die that way does it have anything to do with sharks. The vast majority of the time they drown, which _is_ actually a valid concern.

    at 0:58, for a moment we see the horn shark a California native species. they are the most adorable little babies and are actually super friendly, some in the wild will even let you pet them. at the sea lab in Redondo Beach, we have a few of them that we allow people to interact with and they act jut like exited puppies whenever they see people

    Why is the ecosystem changing a bad thing? It has happened unrelenting since life began, albeit at a slower pace, and will continue to do so regardless of us. Theres no point stopping evolution because we realise that we are a new variable in the system.

    • @wylhias
      @wylhias 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      issue is not the change, it's the rythme at which the ecosystem changes.

    • @Libya4LY
      @Libya4LY 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We value biodiversity and we like the animals we have now, and as you said the pace it's changing now is fast, extremely fast. Also, it's less of evolution that's happening, but rather a mass extinction.
      If you don't value the beautiful biodiversity of our planet (that is valuable to everyone for the betterment of our lives, not just treehuggers) than I can't convince you why the mass extinction is bad.

    • @markdobson7575
      @markdobson7575 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      If the ecosystem changes faster than the animals within it can handle, then it will collapse.

    • @qwertyuiopaaaaaaa7
      @qwertyuiopaaaaaaa7 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The ecosystem changing is not inherently bad. But if you want to live, an ecosystem change can be disastrous. If you put no value on the life that currently exists on earth, then it doesn't matter if algae blooms block out all light in the ocean and create enough Oxygen in the atmosphere to make it flammable, because that's totally okay objectively speaking.
      However, regardless of how I feel about the lives of sharks or lions, I care about myself. I don't want to die and I don't want my children to die. So I am interested in maintaining the global ecosystem that supports my type of life (human).

    • @geniusmp2001
      @geniusmp2001 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You're right, ecosystems change all the time. And yes, human activity can be viewed as just a new factor leading to change. But, of course, we are unique in that we can choose our actions with more care, thanks to the whole consciousness thing. We can recognize what impacts we're having, and decide whether or not to change what we're doing.
      Other species have had massive environmental impacts in the past. Like when photosynthesis was developed; those new cyanobacteria changed the atmosphere drastically...leading to the Great Oxygen Catastrophe. And then, in the Carboniferous era, plants grew expansively, covering the globe in new life...which sucked so much CO2 out of the air that the planet cooled and the whole thing crashed as an ice age wiped out most life. Yes, changes can and do happen, and can be caused by living organisms. But when they're big and rapid, they tend to cause mass extinctions. Which, if you're one of the species alive at the time (as we are now), is not good for you.

    This is actually true. Sharks actually aren't all that bad. The only time they go not attack mode is when they are starving and need to eat. And I saw a TH-cam video were is girl was playing and hand feeding sharks. I also saw another one were whenever this diver would go diving a shark would come and CUDDLE him. So when you thing about it, sharks are actually really sweet and nice unless you get on there bad side and mess with them like if your big brother or sister messes with you and gets you angry or, they just need to eat something and don't know any better because they need food. This is what I think of shark, sure, they can be deadly, but they are really sweet creatures
