Landscape Photography - Storytelling

  • Since starting my TH-cam channel I have become obsessed with storytelling, both in my videos and increasingly in my photography as well.
    I believe that if we can add an element of storytelling to our photography it can help us to create much more compelling images.
    I have been inspired by the great photojournalists of Life magazine but their images have a very strong human element but how can we add an element of storytelling to our landscape photographs.
    I think it is extremely difficult to tell a story with a single landscape image and so I set you to tell the story of my morning climbing Sheffield Pike in the Lake District in a series of images that I have combined into a short photo essay.
    You can the see images from that morning on my website...

    Nice one Chris, great idea & hit home the point of getting a shot whatever the conditions! for this I liked the footpath shot. also those sheep added to the shots from lower down.
    Photography & vlogging, how to take 3 time as long to summit a mountain!

    Hi Chris can i start by saying congratulations on your promotion at work well done mate and its great to see you back here.
    Now to the vlog - byyyy that first location looks familliar such a pitty we did'nt get decent weather that morning god i'm missing the lakes.
    I love the idea of telling a story with pictures i have one in mind from my walk up gummers how in search of danson's twisted tree which i could'nt find !!!.
    Sheffield pike looks excellent i also use to saying "shot of the day" boy that scenery is beautuful and the memories of the wind on gummers how is still ringing in my ears.
    The gagged rocks on the pike make the walk worthwhile and the selfie spot on !!!.
    When i'm up there i think a collection of images of the cairns would be great.
    The final images are excellent well thats enough waffling from me as always see you in the commennts box next time cheers mate Mike.

    Hi Chris - thanks for another fine video. Approaching landscape photography with the mindset of a photo journalist is an interesting idea but also one which is difficult to execute. It's a very different kind of story telling that goes on in landscape photography, where a single image often has to carry the entire story in itself. I think the most interesting kind of storytelling in that respect is where you shoot the same scene in varying conditions (seasonal, floods, earthquakes, droughts, heavy rainfall etc), or perhaps from different angles where each angle tells a different story. What you did in this video turned out as a sequence of images documenting your trip from A to B. In that sense you were the story, not the landscape, which is why it didn't really work so well for me from a landscape photography point of view. The compositions were coincidental shots along your footpath and didn't quite come together as a cohesive story. I really appreciate your efforts and I think you should definitely give this another try. Thanks a lot for the video and keep posting!

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Michael - I really appreciate you taking the time to feedback. You make some excellent points particularly about shooting the same scene in different conditions and from different angles. I will certainly have another crack at story telling. I have given it a lot of thought and have decided that I would like to try to shoot an landscape images that poses an open ended question and allow the viewer to answer for themselves, creating a story of there own in the process. What do you think to that?

    Yes, single landscape images that tell a story are a tricky beast indeed. Certainly with travel photography, it takes a few images to tell a story usually, and I think the same applies to landscapes, which arguably fall under travel images also. Well produced video Chris.

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers mate. What about fine art landscapes? Do they fall under 'travel' photography? How easy or hard do you think it would be to tell a story with a single fine art landscape?

    • @SimonBurnCreative
      @SimonBurnCreative 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisSalePhoto I don't do fine art landscapes, not my forte, so never considered if fine art images can tell a story or not. I'm inclined to say they set a mood or create a feeling, rather than tell a story. Regarding the cross-over from travel photography to landscape photography, that's a topic of an upcoming video from me. I talk about fine art vs commercial too.

    Loved the vlog Chris, superb area. I do Glenridding Dodd to Sheffield Pike, so have not done the walk you did, so that has inspired me to do that for a start. Agree telling the story in one picture is difficult but doing it the way you have on your website works. Enjoyed the selfie, think you outdid the Herdie!

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Difficult to outdo a Herdie Rod, I have been thinking about doing a video dedicated to them, a sort of hommage to the iconic sheep of the fells. Adam Kappa is an expert in photographing Herdies, he's got some belting shots of them. The ascent from Glencoyne is pretty easy, far easier then huffing and puffing up that steep slope from Glenridding Dodd.

    I really appreciated your point about the photojournalists needing to capture the moment, no matter the lighting. What an important perspective - put your attention on the moment, not the perfection of the scene. On a separate note, not being a fan of the selfie photos, I have to admit that your selfie in this context makes the selfie much more meaningful - it now has a story. Another great topic, glad to see you're still vlogging!

    • @andychattaway5620
      @andychattaway5620 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, I think most photographers shoot photo essays at times although quite subconsciously. I think I do at most locations I photograph because I travel to an area with several places/ideas in mind and I try to get a cohesive set of images which tell the story of the place. I also like to include details within the image the metadata such as types of rock plant names etc as you did in your video with the Herdwick sheep, which you will know (being a local lad) were introduced by early Norsemen settlers and farmed by the Romans. I think having these details helps create an essay. I can't check your essay on your site as I get a "OOPS - Page unavailable" error message when I click. Don't worry though I'll keep trying.

    I think mission accomplished Chris. Such a lovely area . I really need to include more of the "storytelling" element in my own images. I think there are rare opportunities when we can do this in a single image . I do like the idea of several images to create a story or theme about a day. Good tip and approach on a classic storytelling approach. Well done. Cheers. Miguel

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Miguel, I think the best we can hope for with a single photo is to pose an open ended question that encourages the viewer to answer for themselves (a subject for another videos perhaps). A pertinent theme you`ve brought up here Chris for us landscape photographers. It`s a problem that Tom Lowe wrestled with and took some stick over ("there`s no story!") in his film Timescapes.
    I think he decided to try and make the film a kind of meditation for viewers, one where they could place their own interpretation and meaning on. I`m not sure if this works for everyone but that film enchanted me anyhow.

    I think you are right Chris, hard job to tell a story through images when they are purely landscape but I think the images worked well together when you put showed them in the slideshow. Narration in the form of the vlog is essential to that tale and I look forward to seeing more from this series if you are going to do them. I watch quite a few vloggers who aren't particularly photographers but they express themselves mostly by talking through their episodes with some pics and other types of b roll. ... and I enjoy this type of video presentation. Loved your video. Your storytelling idea brought to mind that wonderful single photo from the end of WWII where the returning sailor got out of the parade and really kissed a nurse that was watching. Alfred Eisenstaedt took that photo while working for Life magazine. It is that classic single photo story that provides so much information. There is a lot to your approach for the landscape but wouldn't it be grand to find a single landscape shot that told a story. Maybe something on a fierce weather day would be possible or after a storm. Anyway thanks for your insight and efforts.

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know that photo very well Erich, it is iconic! The story goes that the girl in the images wasn't very impressed with the sailors advances! I have been giving a lot of thought to storytelling with a single image. I think I might try and shoot something that asks and open ended question that the viewer can answer for themselves. What do you think of that idea?

    • @erichstocker4173
      @erichstocker4173 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris, great idea! It will be quite a challenge but should be interesting. Your point about the Eisenstaedt subject is interesting and probably true but I guess most women even if aggrieved were pretty forgiving given the circumstances. I understand there is some controversy about who the sailor was also. Trying to translate that type of single photo story to landscape is a challenge. I'd be interested to see you following your idea. I think that might be the best way to have a single story landscape photo-the open question for the viewer.

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd be inclined to agree with you on that Simon - might have made an interesting video but I'm not sure the images were much cop.I preach about shooting at the right time of day and avoiding the harsh light but increasing I find myself going against my own advice, purely for the sake of a video - back to basics for me I think!

    • @SimonBoothPhotography
      @SimonBoothPhotography 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, don't be so hard on yourself, this video appeals to the vast majority of people with a camera. Just because you and I love the light to be great; going out in all weather and at ridiculous times of the day when most are enjoying their bed is not for the vast majority. I think this film is a win in that respect. And on .another note, I preach that if your shadow on the ground is taller than you are, then the light is good enough!

    How pleased I was to see a notification pop up promoting a new Chris Sale upload! Watched it last night and just getting back to commenting. I enjoyed the photo essay format. As others have already stated in comments, I think it is quite a challenge to tell a story with just images--even though "a picture is worth a thousand words". A well paced narrative brings it all together--well done. I thought I read that you were going to separate hiking and photography? Maybe just an exception here, but I commend you on a 500m + ascent in what appear to be new boots! Are your feet OK? ;'-) Cheers, Jeff

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jeff, this was the video that made me decide not to combine photography with hiking any more. I wasn't happy with the images that I got particularly the last three. Initially I decided not to release the video but I took another look at the images on Saturday and decided that they could be rescued with a bit of heavy cropping (you can get away with that if they are only ever going to be seen at 1920 x 1080).

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my 'one shot wonder' video I talk about the steps that I go through when taking a photo. One of the steps was to figure out how the subject (protagonist) combines with it's surroundings (the situation) to tell a story. If you get it right (which I don't very often) it really can help to lift your photography.

  • @philipculbertson55
    @philipculbertson55 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really enjoyed the video. The photo of the sheep under the tree in the valley was really nice. Personally, I think that shot tells a story because it evokes a peaceful, calming feeling when I gaze on it. It caused my eye to wander through the valley and up the mountain to where the light fell on the hillside. I think when that occurs and a viewer senses an emotion, the photograph has gone a long way toward telling a story. To me, that shot had a beginning, a middle and an end. While a series of shots in a photo-essay tells a much more complete story, that single shot, for a moment, had my full attention and made me linger enough to make me pause the video and marinate in the peace of the scene.That's my two-cents worth anyway.

    Great to see you popping back up in my notifications! Yup hard to tell a story from one image and your series is cracking yet i feel you left out some shots that make it a personalised story, the sheep and your selfie. These make that story personal, the other shots can be done (if slightly different due to light/weather/sheep positioning) One photo cant tell a story but it can let the viewer create their own. That's one thing I've been told about some of my images, that they give the viewer the base to create their own story from it. So the short of it, I agree with you and disagree. Photos need to be multiple to TELL the story. But a single image can help CREATE a story.

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An excellent point Adam, and I'm not going to disagree with you. I like the idea of creating images that allow the viewer to create their own stories. Haven't the foggiest idea how to go about it though. I guess if you can pose an open ended question and let the viewer decide of the answer you'd be well on your way.

    • @TheNonsenseAdventures
      @TheNonsenseAdventures 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know how to do it either, some shots just seem to open up to a viewers world. I do sometimes feel its the motion of clouds and water that help create a world within the photo.
