    Chris, very good. Firstly about foreground especially as we were talking about it tonight. Agree re being flexible, some once said to me, don't forget to look behind you, which has helped me get a much better shot on more than one occasion. I take it you are using a drone now for some of your B role.

    Took a walk up there yesterday Chris, just for a look around. Like you say, lots of potential, but unfortunately the weather came in and totally obscured Blencathra. Will go back soon though.

    3:00 am - now that's dedication! Too bad you missed out on the pastel sunrise. But yes I agree with what you're saying in this vlog. We must be flexible and go with the flow. Let's not get so narrow minded with pre-visualizing a shot - that we miss out on other great opportunities. Lesson learned!

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been thinking about that Alan - I am not sure what I would have done with a shot of the pink sky had I managed to get one. I am not sure it would have sat well in my portfolio. At least I have the video as a reminder.

    Really enjoyed that one Chris. Im a firm believer in planning and revisiting locations many times over. As a mountain, Blencathra takes some beating and I always look at it in awe every time I drive by, in fact, Ive been by it today enroute to the Newlands valley.

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do the same Paul - most of the shots in my portfolio come from visiting a location over and over again. I am typically working between 12 and 18 locations at any one time. But once I get the shot, the location gets retired and I move on to something else.

    • @paulatterby7507
      @paulatterby7507 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can understand the need to "retire" a shot and move on as a professional. Personally, as an amateur, I will return to "successful " shots from time to time. Over the years I have come to realise that landscape photography invloves a lot of legwork and standing about!

  • @daveshannonphotography
    @daveshannonphotography 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video Chris. Drone footage, b roll, music suited the scene. All in all fantastic. Blencathra has to rate as one of my top 3 summits in the lakes.

  • @timothykieper
    @timothykieper 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You did not mention this time, but I like the continued use of drone shots as B Roll. It adds a cinematic touch and serves as a subtle change of pace. Very Nice !

    Chris - I feel you. Your video is almost identical to the one I have queued for release tomorrow. I was at Zion NP wanting a shot of the Watchman with the river in the foreground. I think this is where TH-cam holds me back James. If I didn't have to worry about filming, I think I would be able to react better to what was going on around me.

    • @JamesParkerPhotography
      @JamesParkerPhotography 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisSalePhoto Absolutely. It's especially difficult if you are trying to get the best quality video using a separate camera, tripod, wireless mic, etc. I'm not sure how some people do it. I use just my Osmo Pocket 2 and wireless mic and rarely set up another tripod simply because it takes too much time to add all the additional gear. Regardless, I enjoy all of your content!

  • @capturehadsel
    @capturehadsel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video and yes the weather is not always like promised in the weather forecast. If you wanna show the mountain like the main object the image has a to dominant foreground that will get all the focus in the image, but the image like it is isn't a bad one? Maybe I didn't react before, but did you start flying a Drone? I really like the b-roll sequences with the drone.

  • @CraigNiesenPhotography
    @CraigNiesenPhotography 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Chris, I think that most of us are guilty of tunnel vision. I know that I have spent countless evenings working on the same composition when clearly the light and the weather are working better for a different subject at the location. Usually, I am better at avoiding tunnel vision when I am on a photography trip. Still, last year we revisited Badlands National Park, and I fell into the trap of being overly focused on the perfect composition. Thanks for sharing. Peace and Safe Travels -Craig

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a difficult problem to over come I think Craig, particularly if you are filming yourself as well. There is so much to think about.

    • @CraigNiesenPhotography
      @CraigNiesenPhotography 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisSalePhoto I agree TH-cam adds a level of complexity to our landscape photography outings. While editing my videos and watching others, I have noticed that sometimes we will frame up a very lovely composition for use as B-roll. And sometimes, not always, that composition would have made for a better photograph. Generally, I see it in videos where we are not sure of the photograph that we made while on location. By the way, I love the addition of the drone B-roll shots. It adds another level to the story when you are on location.

  • @wilsonwhanau5618
    @wilsonwhanau5618 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Liking the drone shots. It looks like you’ve really thought about it rather than shove it up and hope for the best. You could do a follow me shot on the way out so we can see overall where you have to walk to etc this would also give us an idea of the isolation and effort you take to get somewhere to shoot.

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would be great Wilson, but I only have a Mavic Mini which has limited functionality and does have a follow me mode. That being said, I was given it by a friend and I am everso grateful. I love using it for my videos and think it has added and extra element.

  • @BosePhotography

    Great advice Chris, so many times I have missed out on good shots because I’ve not managed to be quick enough, or I’ve been prefixed on a particular shot or location. It’s usually because I’m trying to get to a certain location in time, and don’t stop to take an image that appears when i’m on my way because I’m in a rush to get to that spot! It’s hard to get right! I’ve taken to being prepared to grab a quick handheld shot at least if I can, and that approach has paid off at times. S

    Hello Chris,
    Always fun to watch your presentations. I liked the sunrise shot actually.
    I do notice you don't ever seem to try to shoot some things pano, with multiple shots and stitch them...and I think it would work a lot on what you shoot.
    Maybe give that a shot and then that will allow you to crop in a bit to get the exact framing you are after. Just a suggestion....hoping to see you try some of that.
    Have a GREAT day!!
    CC

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi CC - I have tried that before, I did a video on it a few years back. But I've never been a lover of panos - I don't know why. I sometimes wonder if it's because I share most of my work on social media and panos just don't work very well on there. My mate Ewan Dunsmuir does some wonderful panoramas - really good stuff. But then he mostly sells HUGE prints.

    More often than not, I find myself having to go back to a location time and time again to get decent conditions. But when they do align, makes me feel all that was worth it and do it again 😂 great message and loved the photo critique towards the end.

    • @ChrisSalePhoto
      @ChrisSalePhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is my approach too. Most of the photos in my portfolio come from revisiting a location many times. It takes me a while to find the composition and then to match the conditions to the scene. But once a shot has made it into my portfolio, I then retire it and move on to something else.
