Tom Cruise was believable in this movie! (?) The alcoholic Yankee soldier finding a new (old) way....... My grandfather helped clear the Japanese out of Biak after the tank battle in WW2. He was a cook and captured two with a frying pan when they tried to steal food! They were so starved he felt sorry for them. Kept a sword he found - bloody sharp!
The song is and also isn't about feudal Japan. It rather is the switch from the feudal Japan to the modern Japan to be able to stand up to the bigger and more modern western world in the 1850s. The samurai who until that time has been very well-standing in society lost their status and became commoners, just as everybody else. Those who this song about is about started a rebellion against the change to society and died for their cause until they all were dead.
