I remember my grandma singing it. Her vocals weren't THAT impressive of course but the singing techniques were pretty similar. What Dimash did was more typical of his native Kazakh music...But both are amazing of course. They are young and grew up when both Russia and Kazakhstan became independent but I think that the influence of the Soviet Union which was a giant melting pot of cultures of it many republics still exists and it's not surprising if some of their runs and riffs sound similar.

It is especially meaningful to Diana, who is herself an orphan. You were right in thinking it sounds tribal, as her biological mother is from an ancient native shamanic tribe, the Nivkh people. Wikipedia has an interesting article about this tribe.
Diana's mother was abusive, and she ended up in an orphanage by the time she was three or so. She was finally adopted in her early teens. She was non-verbal, so a doctor suggested her adoptive parents enroll her in singing lessons. What you hear is the fortunate result of a life begun in tragedy. So the emotion in her singing comes from a very deep well of pain. She miraculously remains cheerful & hopeful.
Oh, that "thing" she does is related to yodeling. In fact, she has a song called Jodel-Time. You can find it on You Tube.

A human doesn't reach their cognitive years until right about 3 years of age so she wouldn't recollect the abuse nor probably anything about her biological mother. The body has this mechanism to protect one's fragile psyche from being scarred by the horrific memories of your birth and the countless nights you cry as an infant because your hot, cold, hungry, or laying in your own feces til your diaper is changed. Even bright lights, loud sounds or strange adults hovering over you would traumatize a baby who literally knows squat about the world. However, you are right about us being blessed by the path that situation resulted in.

I love love love your reactions and all your assumptions and guesses ;) Rechenka is a Russian folk song and even though Diana performed it in a modern arrangement but it still had that ancient tribal feel to it. I remember my grandma singing it. Her vocals weren't THAT impressive of course but the singing techniques were pretty similar.
What Dimash did was more typical of his native Kazakh music...But both are amazing of course. They are young and grew up when both Russia and Kazakhstan became independent but I think that the influence of the Soviet Union which was a giant melting pot of cultures of it many republics still exists and it's not surprising if some of their runs and riffs sound similar.
