I was lucky enough to be at the recording of unplugged , They did the whole show twice and then some random songs that never made the album, Truly memorable day.

I was there. What a day. Clapton headlined .. The Who, Dylan, Alanis Morissette, Jools Holland. Incredible. Clapton’s set turned me on to the blues like nothing before .. changed my life. Truly epic.

This is a perfect example of why Clapton is my favorite. I just love the style, so smooth. Speed when it's needed and space when it's not. I also love your excitement when you study what these greats are doing and explaining it to us. I'm going to check out your lessons. I could use the help. Peace!

She told me that is what Eric says before the piano solo. I laughed on the floor atvtgst one, and corrected her with He's say Chuck Leavelle! She came back with an Emily Latella "Oh, never mind!"

Kudos again for another outstanding vid Palmisano!!! Immensely entertaining to watch you do these on the fly. Love it. A great version, but must say, for me, the definitive 'live' performance of Old Love has to be the 24 nights version at the Albert hall. Next level phrasing. this is a great live version. It adds to the (also great) studio version where both Robert Cray and Eric solo, with their very different guitar "voices". Those two guitar solos, the interplay, the guitar voices reasoning, straightening things out between them drew me to the song on first listen 30 years ago. I love Robert's sometimes staccato type playing

12:28 the thing is: he’s starting on B, the 9th of A but.. it actually works so well because it’s the third of G, which is the chord in the background harmony.
That’s what Clapton genius is about.

This is my first time seeing a video of yours ... SUBSCRIBED!! Wow, dude ... on a planet of 8 billion (or whatever) and I can see endless people who love music from every nation, I'm hard pressed to think of a single person who, clearly, loves music as much as you do. You are a phenomenal musician, again -- clearly, (your ear is impressive AF), but rather than pimp yourself, you are pimping wonderful music for its own virtue. I instantly fell in love with your channel.

GREAT breakdown Michael. Feels for days! It's nice to hear such expression without digging too deep into the theoretical weeds.
Had a chance to see Steve Gadd Band at a small club here in Seattle a year or two ago (sat center stage about 15 feet from his set). Never shows off. Doesn't need to. He just grooves and I could watch it all day. Michael Landau was playing guitar-incredible player with a really unique style. Highly recommended! It's a can't miss show if he ever comes through Baltimore. Thanks Man!

Clapton is my favorite player to ever live. My wife took me to see him in September of 2021 and he was 76 and still smokin'. His tone just literally fills the arena. It's amazing how truly massive he sounds and if you've ever heard him live I'm sure you know what I mean. Also Michael I recently started making youtube Shorts and sometimes get quite a bit of views but it seems like every Clapton song I put up there doesn't get hardly any views. Have you experienced that same kind of nonsense with the stupid algorithm? I hope your Clapton video blows up!

Youre so right to point out how Steve Gadd plays in the pocket. What a drummer!! Speaking of which, have you checked out 'I Shot The Sheriff' from the very same show? If not, it's a must. The way Eric and Steve partner up in it is phenomenal. And Eric's playing, IMO, surpasses even Old Love.

I was looking at your video and saw another video right by yours of my guitarist in a band we put together called Contra Band. He is a great musician and helped me write a few songs, we had a really good time in that band. We had an ex punk drummer who was also versatile and an American on bass and guitar, plus a violinist/ guitar and bass player. A good outfit and lots of funny. We are all old men now. I am a big Clapton fan since the Yardbirds time, listen to the damned tune and then mess around. I just got the music sheet and played what it told me to and had the chords down in a few minutes!

@@Utube-s8m heard the name Chris Duarte but never heard his music and I've never heard of the other guy you mentioned before. As far as fandom goes I'm mostly a 1980s hard rock and metal guy. And a 70s classic rock guy (mostly whatever was on the radio). I've only dabbled in contemporary blues more recently and still have never gotten into other stuff like jazz. As far as guitar companies endorsing youtubers and tick-tok creators versus a good artist who's obscure and therefore doesn't have a big enough following to get an endorsement, I don't get how that relates to me not knowing an old song.

This song was co-written by Clapton and Robert Cray, and the original version on the Journeyman album has them both playing on it. They’ve played it together live periodically since then.
As for the rest of the commentary - this is the whole point of blues. Whether it’s Clapton or B.B. King. It’s all about expression. What B.B. called “speaking with good diction”. The simplicity of the blues is what leaves it wide open to improvisation and expression, and that is the whole point of it. Pure feeling and communication.

That was Possibly the most intelligent ‘reaction’ video I’ve ever watched. Michael, your explanation of ‘what makes Clapton Clapton’ or or as Uncle Rick would put it, what makes him ‘great’ might just be the best overview of Clapton I’ve ever heard and I’ve seen him live at least half a dozen times since the late 80s. Also your playing in your example of ‘singing’ and building a story at the end there was superb and articulated perfectly your point. Can I ask what amp you are using, it’s a lovely tone?

I envy you Michael with your musical ear (a gift most of us don't have).
I have two personal descriptions that I call: "fast ears" and "hear in 3D".
"Fast ears" is just the ability a few people have to listen to a lead run at tempo once, and then play it back (maybe not note-for-note but pretty close).
"Hear in 3D" is the ability a few people have to listen to chord progressions once and then play them back mostly accurately.
One can have 20+ years of experience on guitar, and then a teenager down the street with "fast ears" and "hear in 3D" gifts can pick up a guitar for the first time and within six months have you asking "how do you do that again?".

Very interesting analogy between people speaking and Clapton-style soloing. I’ve never thought about it that way, but it completely makes sense. Maybe this is why the majority of the typical “greatest guitarists ever” lists are usually pentatonic based players.

I love pentatonics. And that’s what my ear gravitates towards. The people that make fun typically chuggers don’t realize that those pentatonics scales are used for rock, classic rock, pop, blues obviously, funk and I play them over RnB which I love so although some guys love prog rock or math rock I find it boring and has no melody whatsoever. It’s just fast scales. Boring. Love the pentatonics.

@@Utube-s8m yeah, I couldn’t agree more. The super technical stuff just doesn’t appeal to me as much either.

All the tone is in those 1988 Lace Sensor pickups. 🤭

    The Am part
It’s just Am w a “line cliche” (descending chromatic line)
It’s a stock progression in manysongs
    Am, Am/g#, Am(7)/g, Am/f#
(Am/f# is another way of spelling
    F#m7b5)

As great as this version is, the “24 Nights” version is way better. Much more expressive and soulful.
