I agree with your theory. It's even more so with hunger. Try eating a potato or anything really when you're starving. The bang for the buck is totally there. Even raw veggies saturate decently when you're starving.

It seems like the planks and palms, you get from the trees would be well worth the resources for your need for an incredible amount of planks throughout the playthrough. Also all those Coconuts and Mangos from the trees would be great early game food and save on total plank usage throughout the playthrough from all that early grilling on the basic grill (it burns through planks). Obviously you would need to grab three stone on one of the first couple islands, but it seems like making axes would pay huge dividends throughout the playthrough, almost compounding interest on planks. Is this accurate or is there a reason to avoid the axes early on? Thanks!!!

If you go through the Steam Community Hub and Updates for Raft. You can see Devlogs (should be ok #47 about now). Chapter 3 is coming soon with a story revamp and 4 new playable characters. This games has been in early access for about 3 years I believe. So if you do even a bit of googling, you will find answers to your question

Don't feel stupid, my first run through of the game took me weeks. What's not seen in this video is the dozens (if not hundreds) of hours that went into preparing this speedrun. I would spend hours exploring the same island over and over to catalogue everything I found. I spent hours in creative designing rafts and testing speeds. I think as long as you are having fun, you're doing a great job.
I have to say that aside from the outstanding adventure/speedrun, your voice and commentary makes this video give a very calming feel.
