    I believe the difference for the manual car is just the throttle characteristic - Race is what's referred to as a 'Quick Opening' characteristic, Normal is an 'Equal percentage' characteristic and Eco is a 'Modified Equal Percent' curve. If you have the DSG then you'll get differing shift points.

    Hi Dave, Good video. I have the DSG Estate doing roughly the same milage as you. I notice a massive difference in the fuel, power and drive when switching between the different modes. I'm kind of glad to notice such a difference and the power under your foot. When in Race mode there is far to much power for my wife. She feels much more comfortable when she jumps in the car and drives in Eco/Normal. It also means I can use that saved petrol in race mode :)

    • @StablevehiclecontractsCoUk
      @StablevehiclecontractsCoUk  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dan thanks for the comment, do you think it's because you drive differently in those modes? If you drive the car in Eco like you do in Race, I imagine the MPG would be just as bad as if it was set in Race. Hehe more fuel for Dan then!

    • @djhardaker21
      @djhardaker21 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eco and Race are so different on the DSG I guess I can't help but drive differently. Eco mode is pretty sluggish when you put your foot down it will only drop one gear if your lucky, sometimes the pick up would be in the same gear. However, race will drop you two gears and you're off! Great video's btw

  • @charlesmacgilchrist3648
    @charlesmacgilchrist3648 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think you made a valid point about race vs the lesser modes which would make it easier to get better mpg - that there's no urge to put your foot down when there's little power anyway. This encourages more economical driving to get better mpg as ecodriving is all you can do! Impressed anyway as this car is quicker to 60 than some w12 bentleys that barely better 15mpg.

    Chuckling at day two - all suited & booted, then for the drive - a blue tee... and back to the suit for the day in the office 😂
    Joking aside a good informative video thanks Dave. Is the coasting feature only on the DSG’s? In my current A3 8V SB with S-tronic, I notice the difference in eco and this is mainly due to coasting I feel.
    Would be interesting to see how a DSG performs on the same journey.
    (Nearly got the nights shots too) 😉

    Can you get the different driving modes in the new R even if you don't buy the DCC option? If yes then I guess the different driving modes only influence steering stiffness, throttle response and gear changing (suspensions remain always in the same settings)?
    How comfortable/sporty are the suspentions of the R without DCC?

    • @StablevehiclecontractsCoUk
      @StablevehiclecontractsCoUk  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can, but DCC also gives you the Comfort driving mode. In Race Mode, the suspension and steering stiffen.

    We tried this with our DSG yesterday. 65 miles each direction - south London, M25, A21 dual & single carriageway. 36.3 mpg there in Normal, 31.0 mpg back in Race. (We left it in Race even in the traffic queues to be a fair comparison!) Normal got up to 37.9 mpg cruising on the motorway.

      Agreed; had a BMW 218 auto as a hire car in Spain. Difference between Dynamic and Eco was all in the auto gear selection and throttle response. Eco mode with manual gearbox is a bit pointless it seems.
      Good vid though. Try with a DSG!

      @lewiscannon8213 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think Eco mode was designed with DSG in mind and Vw just put it on the manual Cars to keep people happy , so really it's just a gimmick on the manual transmission.

      @XxcalprofenxX 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tottenham Hotspur the mighty pretenders definitely.
      I've been driving my new R for over 2 weeks and the difference between race mode and eco mode is massive!
      Eco mode will generally idle the engine so the car rolls when going downhill, but race mode will keep it in the gear which will always provide it the most power which is usually revving at about 4,000 rpm.
      The use of both will give about 250-300 miles on a full tank. Not bad at all!

    Nice one fella and at last a bloke who talk proper about car with no bullshit. I have a Clubsport Gti 3 door DSG and your economy is more or less the same, infact yours is a little better. The only difference in Economy Setting with the DSG Box is if you take tour foot off the DSG goes into free wheel mode just the same as a pushbike, engine drops to idle and freewheels like a pushbike, nice one fella, enjoyed that.

    Great Vid Dave. Thanks for doing it. Just goes to show that all these different 'modes' are all well and good, but it's how we actually drive that has a far greater influence on mpg, that how the car is set up. I think these 'modes' encourage us drive a certain way, and it's that distinction that makes us drive differently that effects mpg. The 'modes' themselves seem to do very little in terms of having an effect on the car itself, more of how we perceive, as motorists, that we should drive the vehicle in that particular mode. It's almost like having certain music on in the car, has been proven to effect peoples driving styles. Similar concept.

    • @StablevehiclecontractsCoUk

      You're probably right!

    • @JAG1651
      @JAG1651 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn't really matter either way though. What really is interesting from your vid is how encouraging the mpg is in any mode. Okay, it's not going to be 'Green car of the year' but mid 30's from a Golf R, is not too bad at all I think. So from that point of view the vid was a success in from than one aspect. Thanks again Dave!

    On my manual 2015 golf r you really see the difference when motorway driving using the ACC.
    The "Eco mode" loses speed much slower when you lower the selected speed and gains speed much slower when you raise the selected speed..........can be be worrying on sections of the m25/smart motorways with cameras as simply selecting a lower speed means a long time until it decreases.....
    I can say using the "Auto Hold" and "Eco mode" saves money in start/stop driving in towns/city's with out doubt.

Hit the fkn thing again. No dent and a lot more forgiveness in the suspension. Need it in the city. NYC sucks w potholes. Hand grenade testing site goods. Race mode keeps u breaking hard and killing yourself to avoid them. 💯

    On my golf GTD, you feel a difference when you put it in the 3 different modes, in eco, it feels sluggish when you put your foot down, it changes at the lower revs possible and will cut the power to the engine, the second you stop.if you put it in cruise mode it will also cost when ever possible to save petrol.
    In normal mode its faster, and it only cuts power to the engine if you stop for a long time.
    In sports mode, the acceleration is much faster and you hear the engine more, also the stop start does not wrok because the car assumes you going to speed off.

    Hi, I have an R and i can tell you that if you drive longer distances you will see between 10 and 15 % difference using race mode. It is when you floor it for motorway over taking. In Eco mode, it hold the gears for only a short period of time. Before you know it your in sixth. In race mode you want even get to sixth. My advice is Eco for commuting and race for empty late night or early starts. Like you say you can always add the sound in Eco or normal modes, by using google individual.

Just swith between them when you standing in a traffic jam and watch the fuel computer display. The driving modes are onla interesting for the differences in engine sound and the work of wipers, headlights etc.

    An old video BUT still relevant today ... SO why did we not get a screen shot of the stats like in the Eco mode for Normal and Race then we could also compare miles traveled, Average speed, Time it took and actually see what the mpg showed... and also to compare the times home for Eco and Race as the first video it was still light when driving home and at home, yet in the Race mode it was darker driving home and arriving at home ... a screen shot also would have shown the time as it did in Eco... AND in Race mode you can see the driver constantly changing the gear shift so looks like it was in manual mode and not auto... ALSO driving conditions would have been different with each journey (they are never the same each day I drive to work and back home) . ALSO vehicle fuel gauges and fuel used is not reliable and a true fuel check would have correctly measured fuel used, AND a true check should have been on an off road circuit with hills, dips, curves etc. at a constant speed, without the variables in on road traffic conditions. AND as he said why would you buy a Golf R and drive in Eco?

      Yes, I have owned a mk7.5 R for 3 years now and all the modes are the same they just mess with the fake sound in the car and race mode opens the valves in the exhaust. Its the gear box that increases the fuel economy not the engine l, when the DSG is in sports mode the rev’s are high it’s like the choke is on and is more responsive.

    Interesting video thanks for posting. I recently (just last month) got rid of my old petrol Mk 2 Audi TT and bought a new diesel 2.0 litre Golf GT with a 7 speed DSG auto gear box. This was because I am now doing a daily commute much like yours of 70 miles round trip (perhaps just a fraction more). I am still playing around with the driving modes but I am consistently getting an average of over 65 miles per gallon, mostly using economy mode when on the M5. Even in economy I still feel as though there is a load of response and i have no trouble passing anything. I’m going to try doing what you did with the modes and see if there is any major difference. Cheers.

    So it says UK after it. I get nowhere near that in the US. Is that per liter or what?

    • @willemsmith6760

      Tommy O a US gallon is 4.2 litres and a UK gallon is 4.5 litres so I guess that is why it shows slightly worse in the US?

    Greetings from bizzaro Trump world - great video - in the USA we have comfort, normal, race and custom.

    I ended up on your video because I'm still trying to figure out differences between ECO and Comfort mode, as they are very similar indeed. But I completely disagree with your assessment in comparing Eco and Normal mode. Eco mode, as I came to notice in most cars is pretty annoying, it basically holds the car back, it delays the car responses. When you accelerate pressing the gas pedal, unconsciously compensate for that and yes the power is still there. But the difference is huge between Eco and Normal in terms of throttle response. On a DSG is very obvious, especially if using Cruise control. The Sport mode makes the DCC too stiff for some roads. On perfect roads you can't feel a difference, only behaves better at curves, but in the real world, putting the DCC in comfort is the way to go for me. I can take the sport mode for a little while but it has to be all about driving, cause it won't be comfortable at all, due to stiff suspension and loud noise. And you can get very good fuel economy in Sport mode, but it depends a lot about your driving style. I have a commute of only 7 km and I also tried different modes for comparison. The difference was significant that I decided not to ignore the Eco mode. In some cars is really hurting using that mode, but VW made a car that's worth exploring every "gimmick".

    enjoyed that but expect DSG would improve on that somewhat

    Race mode in sport on dsg make it fart in every gear 😁👍

  • @37rmstrong

    So Eco mode is only available on DCC cars? I don't have that on mine.
    I'm not sure I'd say gimmick because the steering gets a little heavier too in race but that said race offers no performance boost. I'm glad you did this video. I've always thought there was very little difference, if any at all in performance. Yet reviewers always say there is a difference.
    The truth is revealed. It's not a performance deference, it's a difference in experience, noise, stiffness and steering weight.

      Some reviewers will just be reading off a spec-sheet instead of actually testing it themselves. We imagine there would be a difference if we had a DSG model, or if we were driving longer distances.

      Neil Porter no power gains but a lot in body response and stiffness of the ride when going through modes especially steering

      Neil Porter your talking nonsense mate. 2 litre diesel x 2 litre petrol , the diesel will do a lot more miles with the same size of tank.

    i have no idea how you manage such a good fuel consumption in this car.. i have the 2018 GTI which is supposed to have a combined MPG of 44 as apposed to your 37 in the R.. in the real world i drive like a complete granny in ECO mode and only manage 24 mpg... in no traffic, without a heavy foot.. impossible to even touch 30 MPG for me even when driving very conservatively .

    • @danielv7340
      @danielv7340 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also have no idea how you manage to not get more than 24mpg, or 9.8l/100km. The trick to fuel economy is not granny driving but smooth driving. Try driving normal, with the traffic and I'm sure you'll get better. Also keep in mind that this car will always tell you from the start you are at about 5-6 mpg. It drops very fast in the first 5-10 minutes but if your trips are very short, don't be surprised with the low mileage numbers. Drive some more, half hour at least, and you'll see the numbers approaching the advertised ones, or exceed them by a lot, as in my case. I got more than 45mpg as a record, 38 stable on a nice ride and quite often 28-ish in the city. Short trips stay around 23-26mpg. Also, don't idle. The more you do, the less efficient your rates will be.

    An irrelevant test without using a DSG. The DSG drives per the mode selected not the person in the car. For example eco DSG disengages clutch regularly, normal mode changes up asap, and race mode obviously holds lower gears longer for better response (amongst others). None of this is in effect in the manual.

    The sound is fake in a golf R. It is piped in through the speakers. So that is simply switched off when not in race

    • @StablevehiclecontractsCoUk
      @StablevehiclecontractsCoUk  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not fake, it's just amplified, in Eco mode the exhaust still pops and bangs.
