@@SpaceCatttttI don't think you've got the intent of the song right. The story isn't a Pied Piper story. Unless you have a quotation from a band member that says otherwise.
I don't care what the songwriter said. The words are being communicated to a girl by the young man she is in love with [not by the Grim Reaper himself]. There are likely barriers preventing this couple from being together in all the ways they want to be, as well as forces that could separate them in the future. He convinces her that dying together will solve their problems and enable them to enjoy a perfect, eternal, loving union.
Blue Öyster Cult's "I Love the Night" it's another smooth classic rock song with the same vibe. It tells the story of a guy who meets a female vampire.🧛♀
God, I've always loved this song. That repetitive guitar loop gently hypnotizes you, along with the soothing lead vocals (and the "la, la, las"). And the mid-section switch-up reminds us that they're actually considered a metal, as well as a hard rock, band. It's pretty criminal that Roeser/Buck Dharma's name is rarely mentioned on great rock guitarists lists.
Awh man! It's bands and songs like THIS that makes me SO glad that I'm a child of the 70s & 80s, and yet another disaffected member of GenX! When we heard these tunes on the radio for the first time with awesome headphones! UH! Played it over and over and over and over again! Love it! Never get tired of it! Rock ON! 😀🤘
The various instrumental details of this song are wonderful and they back up a trance-like mantra undercurrent that you don't want to end. A really exceptional work of art that few songs can match.😮😮😮😊😊❤❤
BOC is great, I saw them in 93 at the A1 Steak an Grill in Lexington, Ky. There was about 600 people or more, packed into a small room and they played for two hours, gave us a Hell of show and it was like 7 times louder than a normal concert, because it was a small room and my ears rang for an hour after the show, ha.
I had the pleasure of seeing them live twice. My favorite BOC song and always will be. The beginning of Stephen King's "The Stand" (1994 and best version) features this at the beginning. Some folks back when this was on the radio every day thought it was encouraging suicide but deep down it's a love song. Two is one. Another band with this kind of vibe and depth you need to check out if you haven't already is Kansas.
That's valid...as she was in sorrow being alone all these years. She can't let go of him and move on. Maybe in her elderly years possibly. Either way, thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights ❤.
The cowbell works for this song because it's mimicking a clock ticking, like the person in the song is running out of time. How about Mistress of the Salmon Salt or Dominance and Submission. Two more great BOC songs.
Veteran of the Psychic Wars or maybe Death Valley Nights...2 outstanding but less-known songs. i've seen these guys about as many times as i've seen Bad Religion, which is beyond counting. seen them at a county fair, at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, at a little club in Palm Springs...the list goes on, and they are ALWAYS good. got to meet them in Palm Springs, on account of the Club Ninja (BOC) throwing star tattooed on the back of my neck. Eric was polite but preoccupied...Buck was super-cool. saw them once as Soft White Underbelly, too.
“E.T.I.” from the same album is a major rocker. Vastly different sound, but another righteous tune from a stellar album. Playlist of fire and burnin’ for you…
That sound you are talking about could be a pair of sand blocks. We had a set in our percussion array. They are basically a set of wooden blocks with sandpaper fastened to them that gives that sound when rubbed together.
Falling totally in love (Romeo + Juliet) is likened to Death (as the two individuals cease to exist, and the new entity "Us" is born.) Lyrics center around a man beseeching his beloved to not let fear keep her love for him from flowing freely, as his love for her does.
Burning For You is fire...forgive the pun. Don't Fear The Reaper gets origin from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. I am sure you know the story. Believing Juliet to be dead, Romeo goes to her tomb where he sees her laying and kills himself by taking poison. However, Juliet was not dead, only sleeping...she wakes up sees Romeo is dead and kills herself with a dagger. The song is about eternal love that lasts even past death. The man is telling her the story of Romeo and Juliet and says "we can become like they are" and "we'll be able to fly" so basically there is nothing to fear.. I think this song will be eternal. First of all it is a great song, second Will Ferrell and that cowbell.
I interpret the lyrics as an already dead husband/lover reassuring his dying wife. The drawn out guitar at the end is the final breath, the trauma, the utter terror. But then the reassuring voice and calm music return. She has arrived. (But this does not necessarily imply an afterlife.) The song is the dying person's final experience.
For me, I always think of vampires when I hear this song and I think the words support that towards the end when she took his hand "and she became like we are". Really awesome music!
Did you guys remember that they use this song Don't fear the reaper for the Stephen King story The stand that was on TV about 10-15 years back remember the four part one that was real long anyway they use this song for the title song kind of cool
So, Ty, my man, you're talkin' total fiction here from 6:40 - 7:14. There is no wooden beehive thing; it is only cowbell. AND WE NEED MORE OF IT!!!! 🤪 So, thematically, this song can be interpreted in at least a few different ways, but the interpretation that makes the most sense to me is that this is a guy who has committed himself to this girl till death do they part and he is trying to get her to do the same thing for him. Musically, this song was made to sound like the popular '60s American Rock band The Byrds. 🤘🏻🐻🤘🏻
Les Invisibles, Astronomy from the Imaginos album. And Veterans of the psychic war (live) - that guitar solo starting from 03:00!!! th-cam.com/video/7pFdkkjGiEs/w-d-xo.html
🦋 I Love me Some #BlueÖysterCult I was born In 76' and grew up on this kind of music. And it is my Favorite next to "Burning For You" "Don't Fear the Reeper" has been in so many movies and TV shows. My Favorite was Stephen King's The Stand. A classic that will live on through the Ages! 🎶🎶 Awesome Reaction Guys! I Recommend The Moody Blues "Knights In White Satin" Also Portrayed in the recent Dark Shadows movie with Johnny Depp.
she had a terminal illness and was afraid to die, that nasty solo was the last fight for life but then acceptance and peace as she transitioned to the afterlife....beautiful masterpiece
How can you NOT like this song. I heard a short, were they took out the cowbell...it loses something. It's like a clock ticking, even though parody, it loses something without the cowbell, it is integral to the song. ❤
I suggest you react to The Alchemist, off the new album. It's outstanding! The amazing thing is that their latest release comes 48 years after their first!
It seems like its a song about a guy that has a lover that is dying. Either through illness or some other cause. And he is holding her hand and telling her not to be afraid of death.
The song is sung from the viewpoint of the Reaper, telling everyone not to worry when he shows up, everything will be just fine. LIAR lol. Romeo and Juliet for example were some of his best work.
Allan Lanier sang his tune "True Confessions" - the only lead he ever did. The other 4 did share lead vocals, but Donald's were always promoted as 'hits'.
I believe that 40,000 people every day was the suicide rate at the time and "spoiler alert" Romeo and Juliet committed suicide at the end of the story.
~ I missed this one for some reason but - great response video, guys! 🔥 Just wondering if anyone else thought of the game "Subnautica" when they saw the title? 😄😱🤡
Check out BOC's Spectres album. Every song is great. Try "Godzilla" - "The Golden Age of Leather" - "R U Ready to Rock" - "Celestial the Queen" - and any other song on that album. I highly recommend it!
Ironically. I'm pretty sure there's no cow bell on here? I don't know if he's hitting the Güiro as well as scraping it but it's not a cow bell. Cow bells don't go clack-clack, they clang... that's why they're called cow BELLS?
It is indeed cowbell. It doesn’t ring if you are muting it with your hand. Albert Bouchard has commented frequently on adding cowbell to the track and even sells autographed cowbells as merch.
A great, hauntingly mysterious, classic rock song. Thanks for your reaction.
This song will be played at my funeral. An absolute masterpiece. I will have a cowbell inscribed on my headstone with the initial BOC in it.
Can't go wrong with more cowbell.
I’ve got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell!
Come on Gene!!!! Lol
That's "I've got a feevah"
An absolute masterpiece
I’ve been a fan since 1973, they are unreal in concert!!!
It's both a seductive and a frightening song. The reaper leads you towards your death with smooth and comforting words.
And how great is that my friend? Going peaceful and with dignity. When you're end is there there's nothing fo be feared of. 🙂

One of my favourite songs. I can listen to it on a loop
I have done that too to fall asleep ❤
Saw these guys in concert years and years ago. Great group.
The lead singer (and songwriter) is Donald Roeser. Main backing vocalist is Eric Bloom.
That instrument that looks like a beehive is called the güiro
Thank you🙌🏼

That scraping sound you hear is call a Güiro, a Latin percussion instrument.

Intriguing about the cowbell and the ticking clock. 💭
Screams is another great song 😊
I would suggest Burnin For You by Blue Oyster Cult.
They do this live very well. They all sing and the vocals live are just as good as in the studio. Pretty much the same.
Oh yes! This song was in the Steven King movie...The Stand...the first one. Very fitting for that movie.
Main vocals are by Buck Dharma, backup vocals by Eric Bloom, who sings a lot of their songs.
And Joe Bouchard also sings backing vocals on this one

1981 "Halloween II"

that scraping sound is played on a wash board, is what they used to use to scrub clothes on years ago...am pretty sure
Used to see that played a lot in country music. Makes we think of Hee Haw. Lol
🙂👍
Most likely it’s a guiro.
i was playing this song when i was dying in a hospital bed
You should check out "The Twilight Zone" by Golden Earring and "Don't Pay The Ferryman" by Chris Deburg I think you might like them.
Back in the 60s 70s 80s these great bands had many great singers in the band
I believe the instrument you were talking about where it sound like "scratching" or whatever is a washboard
