How to Use the Mattress Stitch for Side Seams | Crochet Tutorial

  • I show you how to use the mattress stitch to invisibly seam the sides of crochet fabric. The technique is similar to the traditional mattress stitch, but rather than sewing through the tops of the stitches, you work through the post of the stitches.
    I cover 3 stitches: single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), and double crochet (dc). This is because the stitch heights are different, therefore seaming looks different for each stitch.

    Thank you for this tutorial. I've watched several videos on the mattress stitch. I believe this is the only one that actually shows where in the stitches to place the needle. The other were vague and nondescript in where to put the needle. Your explanations and visuals were spot on. Oh..some of the other videos said to place your work right sides up when doing this stitch. Thank you again.

      The needle placement, or lack thereof, is something I noticed in the videos I watched on this topic as well. It was something I had to play with a lot to figure out, especially on the different types of stitches since their posts are all different sizes. Regarding the right sides, you are correct. I just forgot to say that in the video (but I flashed it briefly on the screen lol). Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. As always, love hearing your opinions. Best regards!

    This tutorial is fantastic! It's tricky to stitch the sides of stitches without causing holes or weird patterns. This stitch and the tip to go through multiple loops is 10/10 perfect. Thank you for this video, and for covering multiple sized stitches! Your video was helpful for stitching slip stitch rows (I don't expect you to cover every stitch possible) to dc rows. Knowing where to best loop around the dc rows was helpful in figuring out my specific project.
    Thank you for making this video :)

    Notes for future me: start at 3:00 for the beginning stitch, and then 15:10 for the dc row. You work on it RIGHT SIDE UP. This is better than the whip stitch IMO for invisible stitching.
    Post-script: I used this to stitch together the sides of my body pieces in my amalfi sweater. It looks pretty

The picture I used is the original book cover (blue night sky, big moon, characters on their horses) for Robert Jordan's novel 'The Eye of The World', since it's my favorite book. This is gonna be a very intense and long term project, I've never done a blanket or followed a pattern like this for crochet. (Honestly this is probably better suited for cross stitch lol). If I am using a chunky yarn and I need to join in the sides like in your video and is a stripe pattern with multiple colors, would you suggest using a thinner yarn? Or pick one of the colors of the yarn use in the project?! Thank you for the help

    • @SewHomey
      @SewHomey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would use the same yarn used in your project. This seaming technique is nearly invisible so you could choose any color. And since the yarn is bulky, you might try splitting the yarn as you seam up the sides of the stitches. This will make the seams stay together and hide the yarn better.

    How would you join a sleeve to a side seam? I am making my first garment and have 3 different joins situations…shoulder seams, side seams, and sleeve to side seams. Thanks!

    • @SewHomey
      @SewHomey  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! When you seam the sleeve to the rest of the garment, you can use the same mattress stitch technique that is shown in this video. The difference will be the look of the stitches. The tops of the sleeves should have "v's" which are the tops of the crochet stitches. The side seams should look like what is shown in this video. You will join one "v" (one stitch) of the sleeve to one row of the sides.
      What I would recommend is for you to use stitch markers and attach the armpit of the sleeve to the armpit of the garment. Then add a stitch marker to the top of the sleeve to the shoulder of the garment. Then add a few more on the sides. This helps hold the sleeve and garment together, while guiding you where to seam. Then you can use the mattress stitch, starting from the armpit. Go from a "v" of the sleeve through the middle of a row on the garment. Match up the stitches to the rows as you go. Sometimes you have to play with the placement of the needle, it's not always exact.
      It's hard for me to express the answer in words. I hope that makes sense?? Let me know if it doesn't and I'll think of a better way to explain or I can figure out how to show you..

    • @cheriberi934
      @cheriberi934 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SewHomey The top of the sleeve ends with a row of double crochets. The front and back alternate between a row of single crochets and a row of double crochets, so a chain 1 and a chain 3 alternate on the sides. Would I sew multiple stitches of the sleeve into the chain 3s?

    • @SewHomey
      @SewHomey  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cheriberi934 It's possible? Maybe it would be easiest to count the sleeve stitches and the row stitches (sides). You could then determine the placement of your seam. It might end up that you need to sew a couple sleeve stitches into the ch3. But you might have to play with it and see how you like the results.

    Which method would you suggest for the seams along the sleeves, your first video or this one?

    • @SewHomey
      @SewHomey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would recommend this one for sleeves because when you fold the sleeve in half to seam, you will be working along the edges, just as I was in this video. You can line the rows up easily and as long as they stay aligned, you won't have to worry about your sleeve coming out uneven. And when you need to sew the sleeves to the body, it will be more of a hybrid between the two videos. You will have the tops of the stitches on the sleeve side and the edges of the stitches on the body side. But use the same techniques. You'll be taking your needle through the side of the stitch when you're on the body and through the center of the stitch when you're on the sleeve. I really hope that makes sense!

    • @SewHomey
      @SewHomey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that makes sense! Typically I do not change the colors when seaming. I like less ends to weave in and I think it’s more stable to keep it one continuous strand of yarn. This method is almost invisible, so I don’t find that the different colors show through. This is something I would play with though. See what you like. Because the yarn you use could play a role too. To tie off the ends, you cut the yarn and leave about 6-8 inches. Then you pull the yarn end through the loop by your last stitch. That secures the work from coming undone. Finally, you can weave in the yarn tail you left at the beginning.
