I have tried the mattress stitch. EVER EASY once you get the hang of it. I loved the look of my work before I had to sew it together. The body was pretty good but when I had to do the joints at the under-sleeve I was not satisfied with it anymore. Thank You so much. Knitting a blanket for my daughter's puppy. I have arthritis and knitting helps. It has taken me over a year but need to have it finished by December. I have been crocheting since the 70's but never really had anyone to show me how to do anything, so I learned mostly from a small book that my mother gave me, which only showed the very basics. I only crocheted sporatically for many years. But now I am chronically ill and have had to give up a lot of my hobbies, however, crocheting is something I can do everyday!! So I am upping my game and nowadays with TH-cam, I am learning so much. I love this way of joining. I am about to start a mini granny square afghan for my bed made out of cotton yarn. There will be tons of joining and I am not crazy about most join as you go methods. I don't mind sewing them together and with this mattress stitch, I think the end result will be worth the effort as I want this to be an heirloom type piece that I have forever. Thank you again. It's very good to have you here and I'm so glad that you like the Mattress Stitch. I used to hate sewing things together until I learned this. Before you try doing a bunch of the Granny Squares, try sewing just 2 of them (sort of a test run, lol). I have MS and for years now I've said that I have active days and crochet days, lol. I'm glad you have crochet.

I am much better than I was a few years ago, but things like gardening and refinishing furniture, which I love, really knock the wind out of my sails. I found your channel today and things look really interesting. I have enjoyed several of your instructional videos. I have never done fair Isle or tapestry crochet but you have made it very interesting. I probably will pursue this.
Here I am in 2020 stuck in the house since March because of COVID - and I'm crocheting projects one after the other. My latest is a unique cardigan of sorts ("Rainbow Pride Cardigan Crochet Pattern") I stumbled upon that I fell in love with. Tho I do support Rainbow Pride because there are too many I love and care about who are LGBTQ and because we all have the right to be who we are - I also love, love, love color! The brighter, the better. This cardigan is made with twelve, long, strips (two of each color) sewn together to form the body of the cardigan - sleeves added later. The strips are 116 rows of double crochet, 15 stitches across. It took me 2 weeks to crochet them all - but admittedly I had to take breaks every so often, and I got side-tracked with Facebook and TH-cam (and eBay, Amazon, and Etsy, lol). I realized when I began sewing them together that this was something I needed help with! The way I sewed pieces together before was just not working - leaving the obvious stitches exposed and the seam gaping for all to see! I didn't want that! This is where your video helped me in a very big way! Thanks so much for sharing this and helping a fellow crocheter out! Much appreciated! And the way you explain the seam and demonstrate it made it crystal clear. :)

Great video! A couple video ideas that would be very helpful is using the mattress stitch with double crochet stitches. And a project I'm currently working on is basically a mini triangle shawl but with the ends brought to the middle, overlapped and sewn shut so it makes a cowl. Sewing that overlap has been a struggle for me. I want my items to look nice and professional and so far that seam looks awful, lol. I used whipped stitch. I have more to sew so I'll be experimenting. Thank you for this!
Doing a video using double crochet is a good idea. THANK YOU. I can't promise it will come up any time soon, I have a request list a mile long, lol (and I love it). Just a hint is that you pick up both the top and bottom of the double crochet, but ALSO a thread in the center (on the post). If it's triple crochet it's picking up 2 threads in the center (on the post). Sewing overlaps is always a pain in the rump. You should talk to the pattern designer and find out what stitch they used. Always go back to the designer first ;-) I would really like to know what your experiments lead to. Thank you for taking the time to write.

Thanks so much for this. Especially sewing the rough sides!! I recently tried stitching rough sides together for a blanket, and it just looked a mess. Clearly I was doing it wrong. I ended up stitching the bits together with a single crochet, 2 single crochet per 1 double. It also looks a bit off... I'm wondering, do you start your next row with a chain 3 or just start with the actual crochet stitch?? Maybe this is why mine looks off... I watched some videos that said, use a chain 3?? I'm afraid I don't have any information about your project. But I will say, "Going under 1 strand is correct, and if you need a more sturdy seam then turn it over and do the back side as well." I rarely feel I have to do both sides and always judge by the use of the item. Thank you for your comment.

I’m a beginner too and all of my crocheted squares had short tails so I just sewed them into my work. To stitch them together I just inserted my yarn into the same colored work first so it seems like it was a tail. Idk if that makes sense 😅

I have 90 squares 10 inches each square. Would the mattress stitch be the best way to join them neatly? I used 4 different patterns so they are not all the same stitch count. 3 different colors as well so would like them to be somewhat invisible.
If you don't have the same stitch count you'll need to be careful joining them. I would use a blocking board to make sure they stay the same size instead of trying to do it by stitches.
I'm working on a pink, white, and yellow crochet blanket. The base of the blanket is going to be just the pink and white. I'm going to crochet yellow sunflower petals to sew onto certain granny squares. I have no clue which stitch to use for that, but hey. I'm determined, lol.

Absolutely! Just make sure your side stitches match up. I usually do one corner stitch when doing one direction, and pick up that same corner when sewing in other direction.
The short answer is yes, with one adjustment. The mattress stitch is very strong, however you do only pick up one thread on either side of the seam. When I'm working with heavy items I do the sewing on back, as called for, then I do a second sewing on the front of the seam. This could just be me, but I feel better about the seam when I've done that. I've made many huge, heavy afghans - all sewn like I explained here - some are over 40 years old and the double seams are still holding beautifully. I never tried, just one side, on those heavy items.
This was very helpful!! Just some critics.... 1: it would be most helpful if you could really zoom in on stitches. It's less important to show the full ices, though you can at beginning, then zoom way in on the stitches you're working on. (Hooked by robin, YT channel does a great job w lighting and filming, if you want to get an idea of what I mean, as an example-not saying your content should be the same...just filming method makes it easier on us trying to follow you, to understand what you're doing exactly. It help clear up confusion) 2: it would help if you could have continued by joining more together...joining corners for example, what if you have a rough edge and a smooth edge for example. Thank you for showing us, esp newbies, how to actually do the mattress stitch...most of the time it's just mentioned as an, 'everyone should know how to do this already' attitude. Cheers
Michelle, I agree. 1) The problem is I filmed this with a tablet that was about 12 years old. Trying to do fancy things (like zooming in) was not possible. 2: That old tablet also had very limited battery life. So I had to do as much as I could with the time I had. The tablet eventually died. Being a retired woman, living alone on a small fixed income, I did not have the money to upgrade. Yes, from time to time I borrowed other ways to try filming. ----- This is the main reason why I stopped. I decided to just leave the videos up incase they could help someone. So that's the short version of this story. I wish things had been different. Best to you.
If your corners have 2 stitches, do 1 sewing stitch in 1 of the 2 (going in one direction) and 1 sewing stitch in the other of the 2 (in the other direction). If you corners have 3 stitches, pic up the center stitch in both directions. If your corners have a chain do the same as above into the chain instead of just ending on a stitch. Hope this helps. :-)

I am hoping I can use this technique to sew two sections of an afghan together. I had to cut off a large bottom section and redo it because there was a large mistake and I didn't want to undo all that I had done. I was almost finished the afghan and doing the border. There really isn't a left or right handed method, it all depends on what side your long tail end is on. That is judged by what direction the stiches are going and what looks best to you as the seam is put together. If you add thread (instead of using a tail end) then I'm sure starting on the right side would be just fine.

thank you so much, your video is fantastic. I'm making a hat that is worked by making two pieces and stitching them together. I didn't want to just whip stitch them because I know I could be very sloppy LOL it's wonderful that you showed how to join it when you're not doing a stitch you're doing the side of the work. Thank you VERY MUCH for the compliment. It comes with decades of doing it, lol. Just practice. You might find it useful to whip up a few granny squares and sew them together, then tackle your hat ;-)

Thanks so much for this. Especially sewing the rough sides!! I recently tried stitching rough sides together for a blanket, and it just looked a mess. Clearly I was doing it wrong. I ended up stitching the bits together with a single crochet, 2 single crochet per 1 double. It also looks a bit off... I'm wondering, do you start your next row with a chain 3 or just start with the actual crochet stitch?? Maybe this is why mine looks off... I watched some videos that said, use a chain 3?? I'm afraid I don't have any information about your project. But I will say, "Going under 1 strand is correct, and if you need a more sturdy seam then turn it over and do the back side as well." I rarely feel I have to do both sides and always judge by the use of the item. Thank you for your comment.

I'm not sure if this is the right thing to do but I would just thread the ends into the piece your working with
Hide the thread in your work going one way then back and repeat till a good amount is hidden than cut

I’m a beginner too and all of my crocheted squares had short tails so I just sewed them into my work. To stitch them together I just inserted my yarn into the same colored work first so it seems like it was a tail. Idk if that makes sense 😅

I have 90 squares 10 inches each square. Would the mattress stitch be the best way to join them neatly? I used 4 different patterns so they are not all the same stitch count. 3 different colors as well so would like them to be somewhat invisible.
If you don't have the same stitch count you'll need to be careful joining them. I would use a blocking board to make sure they stay the same size instead of trying to do it by stitches.
I'm working on a pink, white, and yellow crochet blanket. The base of the blanket is going to be just the pink and white. I'm going to crochet yellow sunflower petals to sew onto certain granny squares. I have no clue which stitch to use for that, but hey. I'm determined, lol.

Absolutely! Just make sure your side stitches match up. I usually do one corner stitch when doing one direction, and pick up that same corner when sewing in other direction.

is this seam durable for a queen size heavy granny square blanket? i'm worried it will come undone from the weight.
The short answer is yes, with one adjustment. The mattress stitch is very strong, however you do only pick up one thread on either side of the seam. When I'm working with heavy items I do the sewing on back, as called for, then I do a second sewing on the front of the seam. This could just be me, but I feel better about the seam when I've done that. I've made many huge, heavy afghans - all sewn like I explained here - some are over 40 years old and the double seams are still holding beautifully. I never tried, just one side, on those heavy items.

Just some critics....
1: it would be most helpful if you could really zoom in on stitches. It's less important to show the full ices, though you can at beginning, then zoom way in on the stitches you're working on. (Hooked by robin, YT channel does a great job w lighting and filming, if you want to get an idea of what I mean, as an example-not saying your content should be the same...just filming method makes it easier on us trying to follow you, to understand what you're doing exactly. It help clear up confusion)
2: it would help if you could have continued by joining more together...joining corners for example, what if you have a rough edge and a smooth edge for example.
Thank you for showing us, esp newbies, how to actually do the mattress stitch...most of the time it's just mentioned as an, 'everyone should know how to do this already' attitude.

Michelle, I agree. 1) The problem is I filmed this with a tablet that was about 12 years old. Trying to do fancy things (like zooming in) was not possible. 2: That old tablet also had very limited battery life. So I had to do as much as I could with the time I had. The tablet eventually died. Being a retired woman, living alone on a small fixed income, I did not have the money to upgrade. Yes, from time to time I borrowed other ways to try filming. ----- This is the main reason why I stopped. I decided to just leave the videos up incase they could help someone. So that's the short version of this story. I wish things had been different. Best to you.
Doing a granny square jacket. How do I sew the corners?
If your corners have 2 stitches, do 1 sewing stitch in 1 of the 2 (going in one direction) and 1 sewing stitch in the other of the 2 (in the other direction). If you corners have 3 stitches, pic up the center stitch in both directions. If your corners have a chain do the same as above into the chain instead of just ending on a stitch. Hope this helps. :-)
How do you sew corners as you are moving up from bottom of strip to top?
I connect the corners with a piece of loose yarn (gently tied). That way I make sure my corners match up as I go. Does this help?
This video is great, but are you only going through one loop of the stitch on each side?
Thank you. Yes, only one loop. However, if the item needs a more solid seam I will turn it over and do the seam again on the other side.

I am hoping I can use this technique to sew two sections of an afghan together. I had to cut off a large bottom section and redo it because there was a large mistake and I didn't want to undo all that I had done. I was almost finished the afghan and doing the border. Is this a left-handed method? I would intuitively start on the right side as a right-hander???
There really isn't a left or right handed method, it all depends on what side your long tail end is on. That is judged by what direction the stiches are going and what looks best to you as the seam is put together. If you add thread (instead of using a tail end) then I'm sure starting on the right side would be just fine.
