    So, if you're a mechanical engineer and now going to become an industrial designer then it will be a deadly combination. The one who knows mechanism and also can think about end user's perspectives.

    Why do more people seem to know about mechanical engineering but not industrial design? I didn't find out about ID until my junior year of high school, and by then I had taken so many pre-engineering courses I didn't have time to include art. I ended up switching majors in college and am now really happy with ID, but I wish I'd known about it sooner

      Same, hope you can answer some of my questions in your free time and I will be very appreciated. How long did you take to prepare the work collection to apply industrial design major? Do you think those pre-engineering courses you take are useful after you get to college? Any struggles you have during application?

    • @KindaCarolin
      @KindaCarolin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lok7Media i ended up taking AP art in my senior year so I had a portfolio of artwork (albeit it was much more fine art than design work), but they accepted that as my transfer portfolio. I do think the pre-engineering courses helped because I learned 3D modeling and got a lot of critical thinking and problem solving done in my projects which helps wih design problems. My only issue in my application process is that my university has a fall-spring curriculum, only offering classes in sequence. I wanted to switch majors in the spring but wasn't allowed to because I didn't have the fall classes, so I had to wait until the fall semester. I feel like that wasted my time, but I did take an art class that semester that I really enjoyed. Hope this helps!

I can only try to work on how I can bridge those gaps in my academic career so I can design not only beautiful objects, but to be able to do so with a knowledge of math and science. I've a mechanical engineering degree through my bachelor's and currently pursuing my masters in industrial design. This was a good comparison but I expected that you would also talk how in industrial design the user research carries a huge weight before the actual ideation or designing, and also how in a professional atmosphere the design development goes from design to engineering.
    Not to be picky, but the perspective of that recess of the scroll wheel in the mouse is a little off. However, good approach to the design language.

    I think it might make sense to understand industrial design in order to better communicate with full-on industrial designers and maybe do some industrial design legwork if I'm working on a project without an industrial designer.
    That being said, that's an extra year of school and I'm not sure if that's worth doing instead of just... Working for a year and becoming a better engineer.

    Great video.
    As a mechanical design engineer, Aesthetics is also considered, but more on the functional aesthetic side, meaning will it add value to the function, user friendliness of the part/machine, etc.
    Ergonomics is also a factor in terms of machine operation, maintenance, etc.
    I guess we cater more on industrial products rather than consumer products. But if we can make machines as aesthetically pleasing as consumer products, that would be lit.

    This is very similar to describing a structural engineer vs. architect. Many people I've met think of them synonymously, when both have overlapping roles and need for collaboration, but different focuses. Architect has a lot to do with the looks and usage for the people inside and outside the building. They will also be considering how the structure will hold up as they conceptualize, but not to the extent of a structural engineer. The structural engineer ultimately ensures the building will be able to hold up and withstand forces of nature and usage.

    To Jimmy or Anyone else here with experience in this matter:
    Hey Jimmy, been watching your vids for a while now and I was wondering if you had a moment to answer a quick question. I am about to start an Industrial Design Program with an Emphasis on Transportation Design, and I have also applied and been accepted to several CAD design programs, however, there has been an aspect that keeps nagging at me strongly. I am much more interested in the engineering side of things than the artistic side, but that doesn't mean I'm not interested in the beauty of functionality, I very much am. My mind has always been more geared towards the engineering side of things versus the aesthetic side of things. I am interested in practicality, mechanisms, and function. Furthermore, I am particularly interested in the CAD side of things and I am hoping to take a career path that allows me to focus ion the CAD/engineering side of things. I have learned solidworks, catia, rhino, and a few others. Anyhow, my question is this: Given my interests and strengths, would it be better for someone like me to pursue a degree in CAD Design or Industrial design? I have posited this question to some people, but their answers were rather diplomatic and didn't really get to the heart of my question. Also, I wanted to say that I am not up for taking on an engineering degree as I feel that would require more of my attention and cause me stress that I am unwilling to take on considering personal life circumstances. If you can answer I'd sure appreciate it, if not, I completely understand. Thanks!

    • @JimmyHuynhdesign
      @JimmyHuynhdesign  ปีที่แล้ว

      Do industrial design (ID). You dont need a CAD degree to land a job only doing CAD. ID has a lot of disciplines within it, one of them being 3D modeling which you can specialize in (spend more time building your skills modeling). Honestly, if you're more inclined to focus on function and mechanics then do Mechanical Engineering (ME). Industrial Design is not any easier/less stress than ME. ID might seem easier but everything is relative to your peers. There are a lot of good designers out there which you'll always be compared to. If you're noticing that you're just not as good as your classmates, that will bring a lot of stress itself. These's also a lot more jobs for ME so my opinion, its less competitive. For ID, you NEED to be better than most and a little bit lucky to make it.

    • @JimmyHuynhdesign
      @JimmyHuynhdesign  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out one of my videos called "Product design vs Industrial design"...I have no specific techniques to share for job search but the best way i've learned to land a job is by word of mouth. This means putting yourself and your work out there. Begin doing unpaid design tasks while you're done applying for jobs for the day. Start creating personal design projects and post them on your social media, start making youtube videos about design, do anything that made you want to learn design in the first place. The idea is to get people to associate you with design. Design doesn't always have to be done during job hours. Word of mouth wont happen overnight but if you keep putting yourself out there, eventually something will stick. This has always worked out for me. Good luck bro!

      I anticipate an overwhelming amount of workload. Better to do well in one field than to do poorly in both.

      Hi again Jimmy,
      Your videography, sketching and design skills on the whole are absolutely brilliant. I really appreciate what you do and share on this channel. Please don't think I'm being critical of anything other than the clarity of your response to this specific question.
      I feel it's important to make some clear distinctions between engineering and design professions because so many people in your comments ask 'should I study X or Y?', which could be a life changing question for many. I think confusion around this topic is understandable due to a lack of consistency in university degree naming across the world, and a diverse range of roles and job titles out in industry. I believe there are some fundamental differences in the mindset and purpose of engineering and design professionals that people should consider before embarking on a career path as either. The following is my opinion as a recent industrial design graduate, who now works with engineers at both a tech startup and a partnering 'engineering design' company.
      In practice, anyone who creates something new and purposeful, and does so in methodical way is 'designing'. Both engineers (e.g. structural, mechanical, electronic, mechatronic, software, etc.) and designers (e.g. architectural, interior, industrial, product, fashion, interface, etc.) 'design' things. 'Things' might include machinery, vehicles, products, structures, environments, software, systems, services, graphics, instructions, communications or any combination of the above.
      All purposeful things are created to solve some type of problem. The key difference between engineering and design professionals, is that engineers concern themselves with solving technical problems and designers concern themselves primarily with solving human problems. As such, an engineer's role is essentially applied science (regarding STEM), while a designer's role expands into the realms of applied social science (regarding psychology, sociology, anthropology, etc.)
      Engineers will often deal with very objective, quantifiable and measurable aspects of 'things' (technical functionality and performance), while designers deal with the more subjective and qualitative aspects (user functionality, experience, emotion, aesthetics and ergonomics). Engineers will often specialise in their particular field, while designers tend to particularise broad knowledge and skills over time, due to the nature of their respective professions.
      People in either profession will likely have different considerations, priorities and areas of focus, all of which are complimentary when working in a development team. Depending on what type of 'thing' is being developed and what its ultimate purpose is, the input of both engineers and designers will be required in some capacity for a successful outcome. To illustrate the importance of designers relative to engineers, I like to ask people the rhetorical question: "would you rather a structural engineer or an architect design your house?" Point out that, "regardless of who does it, neither house would fall down". Also, if like most people they have no idea what an industrial designer is or does, you can then ask them: “what type of professional designed your smart phone, car and toaster to look, feel and ultimately function the way they do?”
      Finally, and most specifically: A 'Mechanical Engineer' is qualified to design, make and maintain, mechanical mechanisms and systems. And, an 'Industrial Designer 'is qualified to design physical products for human use, with specific regard to manufacturing, materials and processes. If a product involves both of these aspects, then both professions should be involved in its design.
      Invariably, what a person is qualified to do and what they end up doing in a work place can be quite different things. I think that ideally, what someone enjoys doing, what they study, what they are good at, and what they end up doing for a living, should all be one and the same.
      I hope that's of some use to you Jimmy or for anyone else out there asking 'X or Y' questions.

    Summary:
    Mechanical Engineer: designs industrial things, things that need knowledge of fluid mechanics or thermal, for example.
    Industrial designer: he designs everyday objects and is more focused on people than on companies.
