Shotgun Farmers was the first indie game I saw with a battle pass and its so funny to me because its entirely free and it even gives u currency which could be bought with real money.
9:49 that is not the main issue, the issue is that most games are developed to please stake holders, so, as long as there is an more profitable business model, they will adopt it.
What I find so sad about microtransactions is how it's targeting vulnerable people, be it because they are kids and thus immature or because they have an addictive behavior. Paying 25-100 dollar during a few years of playing F2P game is ok, but we know most gamers pay zero while a small share are whales - addicts - spending tens of thousands of dollar.
One additional aspect of modern gaming sucks: developers and publishers have corporatized cheat codes. They are no longer random button combinations you have to learn from your friends or online, there is no more IDDQD or IDKFA that you just type into the game while you are playing the game. Now it's all about completing certain tasks or finding a number of collectibles and you are awarded with the OPTION to turn cheats on. I was so bummed out about Doom: Eternal that it had gone the same route where you have to activate cheats from a menu and that you have to basically earn them first. And even though the game is excellent, these decisions feel like the developers don't want you to have fun your way. They want to curate that fun and safeguard the sanctity of those precious platform achievements!
I remember going to the school book fair and I would always buy the newest Cheat Code books, now Cheat Code guides don't even exist anymore for todays modern games
The thing is EA are seen as the villan, so if we already see then as the villan, they probably think ahh may as well double down and make more money off this
honestly, I have just stop playing games in general, specifically games with a lot microtransaction. I literally played a 3 dollar game and enjoyed that game way more.
Great content! New companies (especially indies) need to be ok with what they can make from game sales. If you don't go down this path you won't become dependent on it. My games should never need the crazy revenue that can come from this kind of IAP. I have a targeted line of what the company needs to make (not a drooling grin about what it could possibly make).
I've never put value on these skins tbh, I no longer care because I'm straight up not putting a penny into them. At least with CS they can be resold. I actually got dropped one like 10 years ago and it ballooned to £1k in value, so I sold it and bought 2 Steam Decks. I'll happily run around in default skins, though I do appreciate for the kids it's probably a lot of peer pressure forcing you to buy some skins for these games to "look cool"
You have teens now that grew up on microtransactions. When a millennial complains about microtransactions, these teens will say "It's apart of the game". When a person says "You can earn credits by just playing the game, you know that person is who these big companies love. Earning credits playing a game is a free2play mechanic, but when they put something like that in a paid game, they implement manipulative tactics, like making the person grind like hell or pay money, even though they just bought the game. Or there's the day one DLC, which is straight up cut out content from the full game and sold back to the player. The player buys content they should of got by buying the game. It's disgusting that there's no laws against this stuff. If a person received a pizza after paying for it and it had no topping, then the shop says you can have topping for extra $. That shop would be fined for misleading the customer. I completely stopped playing EA and Ubisoft games because of their greed. I did play Anno 1800, only because it didn't have greedy microtransactions. I will buy India games these days because I know there's no munipulation tactics. I loved Far Cry, Assasins creed, total war, mostly all the big AAA games, but I just don't buy them anymore. I don't even get excited for a new AAA game anymore because I know there will be munipulation tactics in them. It's sad when a Indie game comes out that people love, then it's picked up by a big company and the sequel is filled with microtransaction, that sucks. Luckily us old school gamers have Indie games to keep us interested in gaming. The creativity is coming from Indie developers. Ubisoft is the first to fall because of their greed, but many more will follow. Indie games will save gaming.
Piracy will save gaming too. Companies have been removing some older games from sale, or even killing off community-ran "revive" projects. As an example, you can't buy Battlefield 2 anymore (unless you get a used copy or buy a "like new"/"sealed in box" copy from a collector/scalper)... but EA shut down the Battlefield Revive Project. I avoid "Live Service" games... so game companies better start catering to people like me with quality games, or I'll just flat out refuse to buy anything. lol
yea.... that is the reason i only like indie now XD games like stardew or lethal are better then TRIPLE A games nowadays! Edit: okay in the video there is mentioned what i said XD people like indies bc you need to pay less and it is more fun
All we can do is to buy video games that are fun instead of trying to sell microtransactions to us. But I don't belive gaming will ever the same since it became casual amd there are so many people paying for ingame purchases
Battlepasses, tasks you must complete with a deadline and you have to PAY to do them, instead of getting paid for your time. Gamers truly deserve the misery we have allowed into our lives. I would rather pay twice up front for a complete game that replaces macrotransactions with actual decent gameplay and story content, but releases are so broken/overhyped these days it's better to wait for bargain bin 3 years later. Godspeed AA indie studios, we need you.
The solution has been simple which is to vote with your wallet. But there are casuals who keep buying and companies who come up with new ways to manipulate and monetise with new ways. This will be very hard to get rid of it.
Yep! It's not just "casuals" buying this stuff though... toxic, "no-life" veteran "hardcore" gamers buy it too. People love to blame capitalism for all our problems, but really it's just people making stupid decisions supporting greedy companies... and allowing bullshit leftist/democrat policies to exist that enable companies to easily gain a monopoly through anti-competitive practices and government sanctioned monopolies via patents, copyrights, and trademarks. Bill Clinton brought us the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act), which to this day enables companies to strike down content for copyright reasons... but is also very abusable to the point where greedy companies use the DMCA to make a quick buck filing false DMCA claims on TH-cam channels (because there is no penalty for making false claims, and no legitimate verification process). It has also been used censor criticism (like when Battlestate Games attempted to censor Eroktic's TH-cam channel), violating freedom of speech. Patents, Copyrights, and Trademarks shouldn't exist, or at the very least should last no longer than a few years with a restriction that only small companies and individuals be allowed to apply for them.
I am certain that unfortunately at least about 100 people most probably bought that DLC. Not a lot, but it proved that there were people willing to buy.

DLC is still in a diffrent level from microtransactions entirely. There are siturations when DLC can have a genuinely positive impact on the IP it is a part of.
I honestly don’t get the appeal of loot boxes and battle passes. I’ve spent money on cosmetics, I get that 100%, coo looking skin, I want to buy it, even if it’s expensive. But if they then hide it behind loot boxes, suddenly I don’t want to buy it anymore because there’s no guarantee how much I have to pay, there’s no clear price tag so I’m not buying. Battle passes are even worse and I don’t get them at all. It’s just like not only do you have to pay money, but you also have to grind out game progress? WHY? Either make it in-game only, or just make it a simple purchasable item! If I’m gonna pay money that usually means I don’t have the time to grind, pick one!
Treat your money like you have a limited ammount, disposable income should go to your savingd not to AAA pockets, just buy games without microtransactions
oh man... I love MapleStory because i have Stockholm syndrome, and it saddens me to know that game is one of the reasons why micro-transactions are a norm nowdays
So what can we do about this? Not buy these micro transaction filled games and only buy good quality games? Does anyone have a list of good games because I constantly see “gaming is still great you’ve just gotta play the right games” but I need a list. (I also don’t want any 2d platform games lol)
Can't be understated how much more you can make from a person by asking for 1 dollar a day for 10 years than 100 dollars a year in that same period. Not only is it easier to part wirh a couple dollars at a time, but also some people just might not have the bigger sums to part with. Still, i think games missed out on being consumer friendly AND making more money by having solid unlockable content to go with the purchased stuff. At any rate, I dont mind the extra purchases if a) it's all cosmetic, b) there is free, earnable stuff, and c) the games are actually fun
I'll never buy them again. I made a rule a couple years ago now. I'm tired of funding their greed, it allows them to release virtually no good content in games, they only put effort in cosmetics and store items and the total game experience suffers. As long as these weak people continue to pay them, nothing will change. Just look at D4 and D immortal and even WoW these days. I flat outright abuse and /ignore anyone who bought the Brutosaur.
I refuse to be friends with people who play a ton of "Live Service" P2W/Predatory Grinding (Pay To Progress is still Pay To Win), Engagement Optimized Matchmaking (no modern games use actual SBMM), and Lootbox Gambling crap. For me to consider playing a game, it must work well on older/weaker hardware (and work offline), not be P2W/Gambling, and not be woke. If it doesn't meet those requirements, chances are I'm never gonna play it.
3-4 years ago I just started flat out refusing to pay for any game that has these "micro" transactions in them. It's really just bullshit to call them micro when a skin is like half the price of the game itself and not just like 20 cents.. but whatever. I did originally want to play Dragons Dogma 2 for example... but haven't for this reason. Most "franchises" are just recycled shovelware anyway. I was initially expecting to feel like I missed out on a lot, but that never happened and by backlog just keeps growing. I also do not touch anything on my phone that has "in-app purchases" if there's any kind of credit system like number of edits in a editing spp, weekly/monthly subscriptions, gems, gold or anything like that. It's full permanent unlock for a single payment or nothing. If it gets much worse, I could always return to the days of my youth.
I keep seeing this. Do you have anywhere you can point me to that has a list of good indie games? I don’t want any 2d games and that’s all I ever find lol
It's not EA's fault if their games are full of microtransactions, after all if people are spending billions of dollars on them, why should EA stop? I have never spent a single cent on microtransactions, I just avoid games that require paying to have fun.
Problem is that casual players are oblivious to the fact that they are spending more than they need to plus they may accidentally or purposely spend money without having knowledge of how it works and stuff.
Because dlc and micro transactions got blurred together. Even the horse armor was just a dlc. Which is different to buying energy, currency, or premium currency, and different than a battle pass. It's fascinating because fighting games have been doing something similar for a long time and it hasn't been too much of an issue and I wonder why.
Question: When these stats show microtransactions earn many times more than game sales, is this taking into account free-to-play games? If it doesn't then microtransactions aren't as lucrative as it would seem.
This is why I have reverted back to emulation and homebrewed consoles, as well with playing games on cartridges and disks again. This is also why I do not also play Call of Duty 2020 - 2024 at all anymore.
Battle passes are just the worst like why can’t I just play the game and play the game how I want to play the game I have to do these dumb challenges. It’s just so stupid.
I think the online nature and the constant maintenance of servers and game patches makes it almost impossible for the game studios to part from this practice. Idk would it be better if the game charged a small fee every patch to keep the game alive? Would gamers be ok with that compromise.
Bethesda is actually on record saying that the horse armour was testing if they could push content to all platforms because it was before the age of proper dlc. The fact you don’t know this kinda negates a portion of the video
Internet and DLCs (patching games on the whim) killed good games. They can make BS and claim: we'll fix it later, never lootboxes - but do both anyway. We could go back, if we weren't spoiled brats, obsessed about having the best thing now and not having the patience to wait for good physical products anymore. Comfort, on-demand and stream/DLC will always lead to downfall. But worst of all (in all businesses) is this infinite growth notion & letting investors in (I know, devs need money). But play with the devil, and you'll burn.
@GoingIndie Surprised to see Hunt Showdown on your video. Do you play or use to play? Thanks for the content and commitment to quality gaming. Because of the music in your video I have a strong desire to play Hades and Balatro.
I'm not against spending more money on a game that I already own. I just remember when it involved going to the game store, which still sold PC games at the time (yes, I'm old), and buying an "expansion pack" on a disc. I play American Truck Simulator. For $7, I got the basegame (California, Nevada, and Arizona) and the New Mexico DLC bundled together in 2018. I have since spent $150 or so on map DLC for the 12 states they've added since then. SCS Software has a LOT of players like that; if the "% of players with the achievement" stats are anything to go by, something like one in 300 to one in 500 of their players are still buying new map DLC (based on the achievements for visiting every city in the DLC state.) Their highly engaged playerbase makes them profitable, and they do sell cosmetic DLC like paint jobs and tuning packs as well. At no point does it ever feel "greedy". It's just old-school "give the people who love your game most a good value for their money and they'll keep coming back."
I propose get DEEPER into what all this means... Did anyone realized about how normal is "gambling" randomness and bet in games that are directed to families and child, the overused "Dice" in many games and the people that is accustomed to go a lot to places that have a pay to use services like cinemas, certain arcade games, etc... MANY people is accustomed to pay already for not so useful or worth things, now with videogames, and the many psychological strategies and artist united (Plus human stupidity) came up to what is the gaming industry, specially "biggest" games and gacha games (some are also big, like the HOYO gambling experiences behind a cool setting that looks not so boring or "grind appeal" hahaha) Edit: ah yes, just like gamers did in the past... Yeah, still being a success... So... F...
It's big corporation behavior, not companies care to interested game quality franchise product anymore and more always online games, pay once game cause companies unhappy money earn too low.
the argument that the companies are "forced" to include and to rely on microtransactions is an extremely weak one. no one forced the company to become a publically traded asset on the stock market. no one forced them to scale up as fast as they have so that they use up all the revenue and extra than they've created in sales alone. its greed. they could just use the money they earn every release to make a new game and scale up the company reliably within their means. and im sorry but you are a bad person if you do bad things like using manipulation tactics. it doesn't matter what your reasoning behind a bad deed is. its still bad. just like slavers used to make the same argument that "they needed slaves to create a competetive bussiness". we can rationalize our bad behaviours all we like, but it does'nt make them any better. ofcource im not saying that your friend is inherently a bad person, we are all products of our environment and no one is born evil. but we need to be aware of when we excuse bad behaviour because we like the person. we need to on a societal level change our atitude and acceptense towards manipulative tactics among other things and make people aware of it and how it effects people so that big companies can't use such tacticsand take advantage of varnurable people.
One factor that goes even deeper is piracy. I have seen the data. Most games in the last 20 years have tracking software in it. And even the cracked ones don’t remove that. And on average, the install versus sold copy is 20 to 1 That means if only 10% of all pirates would buy a legal copy, the Studio would double its revenue. A lot of bigger games in the last 20 years barely made breakeven . This has led to companies switching to more sinister monetisation models, closing, getting sold, or replacing management with people who don’t care about games but about revenue. It is as people always said since the 90s If you pirate everything one day, they won’t make good games anymore . Now it happened, and everyone has to live with Shit games that are only optimise for making money

I mean games have to make money. Alot of games I have played. Microtransactions were optional. I have spent a little in games but very rarely. Just play the game until you arnt enjoying it and then stop.
After all, while I very strongly detest them, I don't really oppose them, IF the game and the menus run otherwise nicely for those who don't pay... at least I don't get "tricked" into spending money (unless there are unlawful one-click tricks). Of course the game working extra nicely even with microtransactions would be rare though, and there's much nuance. I don't quite get the people who do microtransactions, I feel they wouldn't be even good friends for me. Anyway, these "whales" (and a contimuum) exist, it's what they want perhaps, so why not give them something. Although it's not that simple; it's kind of the same with many gambling things, it's often people who have other problems too and spending money on "games" can make their state worse in many ways. But I'm not sure if some people can be protected from theirselves anyway... but young people at least should be much more protected. Then again many (adults) also have some extra money, and if it then means that the games can be sold cheaper for poorer people, maybe it's a good thing. I wonder if there could even be different versions of the same game... one with and another without microtransactions? I wonder if it could work.
once you find about how to bypass micro transactions on phone and pc makes life ez. Buy game pay nothing and get 99% of things under micro ez. Not going to type how but y'all know how to search. Wish consoles had this trick.
It's easier just to stay away from gaming at the moment better things to do with my time😂😂😂 if all they care about is money then none of these companies are worth a dime, Wait till it goes on sale buy it for pennies on the dollar not losing sleep over playing specific game at its release if companies don't care and are just there for the money

Customizing the energy color of your magic attacks. WHY ON EARTH IS THAT NOT A COMMON THING. This should be mandatory. Amazing
Extra work, for single player. Multiplayer games for clarity.
@MasterMemo clarity. Yeah you obviously never played Warframe
Warframe
I mean depends on the game
I remember going to the school book fair and I would always buy the newest Cheat Code books, now Cheat Code guides don't even exist anymore for todays modern games
it only takes a small % of players spending a lot on microtransactions to make publishers see money. This isn't on *us*
for every player that 'votes with there wallet' there is 2 whales or 5 normies who will obediently shovel money into these games
The thing is EA are seen as the villan, so if we already see then as the villan, they probably think ahh may as well double down and make more money off this
cp is the worst in-game currency name
Lol yeahh
i hope it turns some people off from buying it.
I have never forgiven EA for kicking out Trip Hawkins. Ever since then, they've been screwing up 99.9% of everything they touch.
honestly, I have just stop playing games in general, specifically games with a lot microtransaction.
People are easily manipulated. Gaming companies are not the only ones who know how to manipulate people.
Facts .
yea.... that is the reason i only like indie now XD
Awesome vid guys
I love the mindset you have keep going you deserve support from us
Great vid. fallen worlds looking good, cant wait for it
All we can do is to buy video games that are fun instead of trying to sell microtransactions to us.
If I find who *EVER* bought that stupid oblivion horse dlc . . .
_You gonna miss those kneecaps you have_
I am certain that unfortunately at least about 100 people most probably bought that DLC. Not a lot, but it proved that there were people willing to buy.
@@pranaav2027
Its just rly stupid
like *WHO* are you trying to impress here ?
The stupid NPC's ??
I swear people with no financial sense make life harder for everyone else man
DLC is still in a diffrent level from microtransactions entirely. There are siturations when DLC can have a genuinely positive impact on the IP it is a part of.
They are the kind of people who deserve intraosseous infusions just for the heck of it. 🤣
*Grey* and *Black* markets WILL spring up and grow in response to corporate monopolize squeezing the market.
great video! hope we wont have to wait so long for the next video
Not Thor's dad catching a stray
So what can we do about this? Not buy these micro transaction filled games and only buy good quality games? Does anyone have a list of good games because I constantly see “gaming is still great you’ve just gotta play the right games” but I need a list. (I also don’t want any 2d platform games lol)
The problem is with the people paying not the companies
If they get no buyers, they'll stop
Was not expecting a random Rurikhan to pop up
Can't be understated how much more you can make from a person by asking for 1 dollar a day for 10 years than 100 dollars a year in that same period.
Try Combat Master then. It's like COD, but better.
the Palpatine music in the intro lol
the hades soundtrack in background of video is something i like
Piracy and indies are the only option
13:42 Why did he chose the only skin from the battle pass that reaperd in the shop ?
Wake Up, Babe. Going Indie Uploaded a new video
It's ultimately our own fault for being so collectively stupid enough to enable these companies to keep doing this because we keep buying the shit.
I mean we have indies. However those who are not plugged in only ever see AAA games.
I keep seeing this. Do you have anywhere you can point me to that has a list of good indie games? I don’t want any 2d games and that’s all I ever find lol
You renamed it from the original post so it was hard to find. I'm here cuz i saw Flats reacting to it but his video has the old title
@@MasterMemoidk
I really do not care if the multi billion dollar company goes out of business because they can't exploit vulnerable gamers. Womp womp.
Question: When these stats show microtransactions earn many times more than game sales, is this taking into account free-to-play games? If it doesn't then microtransactions aren't as lucrative as it would seem.
The outright evil in that opening statement.
This is why I have reverted back to emulation and homebrewed consoles, as well with playing games on cartridges and disks again.
This is also why I do not also play Call of Duty 2020 - 2024 at all anymore.
...and many will never quit piracy.
If people didn't spend real money on useless digital gadgets, this wouldn't happen. Stop being so childish.
@GoingIndie
Surprised to see Hunt Showdown on your video.
They're moving to NFTs now.
MANY people is accustomed to pay already for not so useful or worth things, now with videogames, and the many psychological strategies and artist united (Plus human stupidity) came up to what is the gaming industry, specially "biggest" games and gacha games (some are also big, like the HOYO gambling experiences behind a cool setting that looks not so boring or "grind appeal" hahaha)
Edit: ah yes, just like gamers did in the past... Yeah, still being a success... So... F...
It's big corporation behavior, not companies care to interested game quality franchise product anymore and more always online games, pay once game cause companies unhappy money earn too low.
I honestly don't mind microtransactions as long as they are cosmetic only and not pushed in your face. 'The Finals' has done this really well.
the argument that the companies are "forced" to include and to rely on microtransactions is an extremely weak one. no one forced the company to become a publically traded asset on the stock market. no one forced them to scale up as fast as they have so that they use up all the revenue and extra than they've created in sales alone. its greed. they could just use the money they earn every release to make a new game and scale up the company reliably within their means.
and im sorry but you are a bad person if you do bad things like using manipulation tactics. it doesn't matter what your reasoning behind a bad deed is. its still bad. just like slavers used to make the same argument that "they needed slaves to create a competetive bussiness". we can rationalize our bad behaviours all we like, but it does'nt make them any better. ofcource im not saying that your friend is inherently a bad person, we are all products of our environment and no one is born evil. but we need to be aware of when we excuse bad behaviour because we like the person. we need to on a societal level change our atitude and acceptense towards manipulative tactics among other things and make people aware of it and how it effects people so that big companies can't use such tacticsand take advantage of varnurable people.

great vid
One factor that goes even deeper is piracy.
I have seen the data. Most games in the last 20 years have tracking software in it. And even the cracked ones don’t remove that.
And on average, the install versus sold copy is 20 to 1
That means if only 10% of all pirates would buy a legal copy, the Studio would double its revenue.
A lot of bigger games in the last 20 years barely made breakeven .
This has led to companies switching to more sinister monetisation models, closing, getting sold, or replacing management with people who don’t care about games but about revenue.
It is as people always said since the 90s
If you pirate everything one day, they won’t make good games anymore .
Now it happened, and everyone has to live with Shit games that are only optimise for making money
MC Double Def DP called it
ITS BEEN SO LONG

We have the same birthday!!

I missed the old days when games was simple and one time purchased, nowadays is all about greedy and money. 😡😡😡😡

I quite cod after 2019 and the vangard fiasco, the game wasn't designed for people like us anymore 😕. And it's saddens me when I hear "that's just the way it is, get use to it" As a casual nowadays I can't accept this ans we all as best we can shouldn't accept this.
I dont pay or play any free to play games and dont let my kids do it either.

Trick you?
It's absolutely ur choice man. I mean I've been playing genshin impact for 4 years since day 1 and I've never spend any money on it. And the game is still more fun than paid games...
😶 Just play games that are cheap/free or play free games on epic (weekly giveaway)
The games definitelt do their all to trick you and make you change your mind about buying stuff
There's only certain game's i bought that had that stupid microtransaction and yes even dlc. And I was a idiot for even bothering with it for example.
1. Cod 2019
2. Final fantasy 14
3. Halo 3&4 and yes i know it only had dlc but I hated those practices so I stay far from these.
4. Gears of War 1-3 same with Halo 3&4 dlc maps i never even bothered with the new Gears of war games 4&5.
5. Cod game's from the past in 360&ps3 that had dlc I hated these practices so much that slowly I started to walk away from it and I'm glad i did.
And that's pretty much it the only mmo game I bought was only final fantasy 14 and I must say it was fun and addictive. But unfortunately I was getting sick and tired of paying for subscription so I made a hard call and I stop playing the game from that day forth including Cod 2019 I told myself never again. I will tell you these game's are fun but very addictive and companies love taking advantage. And let's not forget about battlefield game's like 3&4 after battlefield 4 I was done with it didn't bother with battlefield 1&5 or even the last one that came out. Yep that's pretty much it. I wish I stop sooner and stayed clear from these game's. Now I buy certain game's that I would play and enjoy. We'll I least I didn't buy those sports game's lol I heard many stories about them.
i only pirate games or play f2p games while never spending money. ive beaten the system
You're enforcing the system
@@MasterMemo pirating or buying AAA games both will still make it worse over time because investors want all the money and your $70 game isnt enough to begin with
excellent video from an excellent channel. however, please dont reference top hat gaming man's channel please.
Imagine paying money for video games.
I mean games have to make money. Alot of games I have played. Microtransactions were optional.
I have spent a little in games but very rarely.
Just play the game until you arnt enjoying it and then stop.
7:38 me:😮
After all, while I very strongly detest them, I don't really oppose them, IF the game and the menus run otherwise nicely for those who don't pay... at least I don't get "tricked" into spending money (unless there are unlawful one-click tricks).
TL;DR Capitalism without limitations kinda sucks
once you find about how to bypass micro transactions on phone and pc makes life ez.
