- Today, we shall continue our exploration of the ugliest cities in the UK. And this takes us nowhere else but Londonderry. No, we’re not doing a rundown of the county. We’re only focusing on a city there. Many people say Londonderry is ugly. We wanted to see how true their assertions are. Our diligent fact-checking of all that’s in the public domain about this county shows that Derry has features that bring it close to the rank of the ugliest city in the UK. We’re going to share our findings with you in this video for your consideration and observation. As you enjoy it, please don’t forget to tell us what you feel about Derry in the comment section.
The County Londonderry
County Londonderry is one of the 6 counties of Northern Ireland, the 9 counties of Ulster, and one of the 32 in the entire Ireland. It was one of the counties in the Kingdom of Ireland from 1613 onward before the partition of Ireland and after the portioning of the United Kingdom following the Acts of Union 1800. This county near the northwest shore of Lough Neagh occupies an area of 818 square miles. It has a population of about 247,132.
Londonderry just like the other counties in Northern Ireland has since 1972 ceased being used by the state in the local government administration. And after further reforms that took place in 2015, Londonderry came to be governed by three districts Derry and Strabane, Causeway Coast and Glens, and Mid-Ulster. Though no longer used for local government and administration, Londonderry is sometimes used in a cultural context such as in All-Ireland sporting and cultural events like Derry GAA. The County Londonderry flower is the purple saxifrage.
About the City of Derry
One of the cities in this county is Derry. Also known officially as Londonderry, it’s the second-largest city in Northern Ireland, the 5th-largest city on the island of Ireland, and the largest in the county. Derry is on the west bank of the River Foyle, spanned by one footbridge and two road bridges. Today, the city covers both banks. It has a population of about 100,000 (83,652) while the Derry Urban Area has a population of 110,000 (90,736) and it’s under the administration of Derry City and Strabane District Council which has both Londonderry Port and City of Derry Airport.
Derry is close to the border of the neighboring County Donegal which has had a close link with County Londonderry for many centuries. The person traditionally credited with the founding of the original Derry is Saint Colmcille from Tír Chonaill. The city was in 2013 the inaugural UK City of Culture, the title it was awarded in 2010. There is some controversy in the naming of this city. So don’t get confused when you hear it being referred to as Londonderry. While unionists generally prefer to call it “Londonderry,” nationalists love its name as “Derry.”
Unfortunately, It’s Rated Ugly
With this in mind, let’s now get to the business of the day and see why many people are of the opinion that Londonderry is ugly. Derry was rated in a late 2022 study as the ugliest place to live in the UK. The study was carried out by Atlas Ceramics which analyzed several factors. Paramount among those factors are the number of boutique hotels, buildings and monuments listed, and interior designers and architecture in each UK destination. Of course, all of these are what combine to beautify a city.
While giving an insight into the raking of the city, the judges explained that Derry lands itself the unfortunate title because its building and streets lack the glamor attracting tourists. This Northern Irish city is the least aesthetic of all cities of its size and population in the UK. In the index used by the judges, it scored 1.79/10, no thanks to its interior designers that are lowest on the list. And these play a crucial role in creating and curating aesthetics for a city. When it gets to architects and listed buildings and monuments, it finds a place in the bottom three.

I just had a holiday in Ireland and spent 3 days in Derry. Derry is a lovely and interesting place to visit - the walled city, museums are excellent and people are very friendly.

Derry is a beautiful city with a gorgeous architecture, saying as someone who visited recently. Yes this architecture isn't always well maintained, but honestly doesn't look worse than most British mid-sized towns. Especially considering it was a literal war zone for 30-odd years, we're lucky it doesn't look like Mariupol or Bakhmut after the advent of the "russian world".
Disagree, it's a pretty little city and the people are lovely. Always look forward to visiting!

Perhaps your video would be more believable if all of your photos and videos used in this presentation were actually from Derry. But many of them used are not even from the UK or any part of Europe. At 8:01 of this video you continue to bitch about Derry while showing a photo of an American town. Just look at the license plates on the cars an the American flag flying in the upper left corner of the photo. And many of the photos and video clips used earlier on are not from Derry or anywhere in the UK or Europe. Some are from North America. If you are going to make a video about Derry at least put some effort in making it believable

Though born in Derry my family would always spend August in Donegal, I guess it was good to be out of town for the Apprentice Boy march, especially 1969 our last before emigrating to Australia.

I would take this TH-cam as a pinch of salt Derry is a beautiful city , I’m from south London originally and now live in Donegal 15 minutes from Derry and you couldn’t fund a nicer cheaper place …there the beautiful Foyle that flows through the city it’s one number one for bloom lovely flowers and plants around the city …the best place in Europe for Halloween celebrations…so anything you watch in here isn’t always true …watch antiques road show on Sunday it was filmed in Derry a great city
My husband was born there and left during the troubles.
Therr is or has been any financial or infrastructure input into our city for decades because all the money goes into belfast and thats as far as it goes

Yes , its the ugliest city according to a website known for its lack of research. It was voted the 4th best city in the world by lonely planet in 2013, perhaps you should reconsider spreading misinformation
Also this video is full of misinformation:
1) Most of the photos you displayed are either not from Derry or are from areas which have since been regenerated.
2) The city does attract visitors, over 1.2m visited the city in 2019.
3) The city was regenerated BEFORE the city of culture.
4) The city was chosen as the city of culture because of its rich history, architecture, events and culture.
5) Derry attracts huge amounts of visitors during the summer season. Its home to Irelands largest maritime festival and fireworks display, which attracted over 225,000 people in 2022 and the world--class 'Clipper world race'
6) Derry has the 3rd lowest violent crime rate in the UK, not the highest!
7) The city has brilliant nightlife, there are countless bars and restaurants open late into the night such as the award winning 'Walled City Brewery' and 'Paedar O'Donnells Bar'.
8) The city council maintains all street lights. Why did you assume the city has no street lights?
9) Many of the things you mentioned were from a sarcastic article from 'Belfast Live' in response to the article written by Atlas ceramics.
10) The city has the largest Halloween festival in Europe, you said it was 'low key'????
11) Derry does not suffer from a 'brain drain' it is home to the Ulster University, which has over 5000 students in the city.
12) The city has plenty of shopping places. It is home to Foyleside, which is Northern Ireland's second largest shopping centre and was previously home to Austins, which was the worlds oldest department store.
13) The city has 5 high quality museums and a wide range of city parks, such as Brooke Park and St Columbs park.
14) Derry has not suffered from economic decline since the partition of Ireland, there is no hard border so the city has been barley affected by the division of the island.

Thia video is abolute rubbish. The halloween celebrations are world famous. There is lots of nightlife. Lots of pubs, hotels and places to visit. I don't know who wrote this dribble but Derry is a great place. The video shows run down areas of America which is not Derry at all.

this is bullshit. I live here with my family from September 2023 and it's a wonderful city with lovely and friendly people all around me. the city is really peaceful and not crowded like other cities of UK.

Do not pay any attention to this video! It is inaccurate, bordering on offensive! The images are either not of Derry or are very old images. It is clear that you have never been.
Some of the information is absolutely laughable, for example, Derry has the largest Halloween festival in Europe. And to say you can't get a good pint in Derry is simply hilarious.
I'm not claiming that Derry is the most beautiful place in the world, but it has a lot of history and charm. Such a poor video!
