Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on TH-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
I grew up with a lot of abuse and lack of affection. Lacking love. I expected to be beaten. I was in special education and had a lot of disabilities.
Im in my 40s now & single. I've been watching your videos for years now and I can tell you that you've helped me heal a lot.
The communication, the growing ad friends and people. I now know that I can be a better partner by listening to your videos.
I also love the office so its a huge reason I fell in love with you two.

We had several special things which happened in September. This year, it's torture for those same reasons plus a couple more. Seeing the two of you is restoring my spirit when I need it the most. You help me feel true romantic love has not disappeared from the world just because it disappeared from MY life. Thank you so VERY much for that.

Dear Sir, I am truly sorry you lost the love of your life. My dad retired at the age of 51. (30 yrs.and out)us kids were grown and that was when my parents were destined to travel and spend quality time together just loving each other up. Sadly, my mom passed away 1 yr later (stroke) at the young age of 48. My dad was a lost soul. no career, no wife no light at the end of the tunnel. He didn't want to go on anymore. 7-8 yrs ago my dad (now 71) met a wonderful woman. My dad found happiness again. He is living again. He travels and golfs and is a pure joy to be around. If it weren't for Marilyn I believe I would've lost my dad due to a broken heart. My dad will always LOVE my mom. She can't be replaced. She left us way too soon but my dad is still on this earth and deserves happiness. I am so glad he found it. I hope
there is light at the end of your tunnel. I hope you find happiness and peace in the memories you have of your wife. I hope you are living your best life and I hope when you're ready....You find someone like Marilyn. Have a wonderful Holiday weekend.

O Donovan, loved what you wrote. My husband passed away a year ago. It’s still rough, but I don’t want to be a bitter widow who hates seeing other peoples happiness. The world needs more happy folks..would make it a better world for all of us.

I'm 67, married for 41 years, and want to encourage you to do everything possible to hold on to these feelings. Hannah is who she is because of her parents. The same with Shane, instead of bitter he embraces life everything it entrails laugh, struggles, and the best gift of all, love to give it and receive it.

As some who had to deal with bad health and became handicap 12 years ago, ending up in a wheelchair for over 2 years and fought to walk again; I can’t imagine how much pain Shane is in daily. I knew when I depended on help to do anything getting in and out of the shower; I lost my freedom. I had use of my upper body and arms. Just getting from place A to B was more mentally and pure exhaustion much more than working on my feet and using my back as an inventory manager. Mentally exhausting is so much harder than physically exhaustion.
Imagine in a wheelchair or using a walker how you are looked over and not seen. Imagine people (another customers) fussing loud enough because the waiter had to move chairs around so you could fit you and your wheelchair at a table. Imagine all able bodied waiting inline to use handicap stall and others are empty but you can only use the handicap stall so you’re waiting inline too, and women are bad because you’re taken so long only place your wheelchair fits and you need the bars.
I know the world has changed and I realize as handicap person you’re treated as 2nd class citizen. Your vitriol towards this couple is sickening. Do you realize you are bullying them? No one is twisting your arm to watch. Be kind
My husband was the same way he loved my back rubs so much. I had a patient as a nurse who was in the hospital a long time and he would ask me to give him a back rub at night. I had excema on my hands as a child and grown up and my skin is very badly scarred and my hubby would kiss my hands and each fingers and say how great they were., haaaaaaaaaaaaa makes me smile thinking about that. I actually met a young man in his 20s in a store and we were talking and connected and he actually said god I wish you were my age bracket as u r what I am looking for a woman. I felt the same thing. We just hit it off. We still meet for coffee at times and have such a great time. He is a great kid. So I would go for a disabled person like Hannah did . No problem but again I have standards and a 20 year old is not in the running haaaaaaaa

My hubby’s last name was BRAES and his dad immigrated from Scotland. My husband as a young lad was in a pipeband and he played the drums. He played for a long time into his adult life and had a kilt and whole nine yards and he was so sexy in it. . Wow wow

You are the example that pure love still exists beyond the physical in a world full of evil, appearances and deceptions. Hannah, you are so incredibly lucky to be loved the way Shane loves you. Shane, this was the absolute sweetest thing and you give Hannah a gift every time you accept her care. I am a natural caregiver as well, but my husband often doesn’t accept it (for a variety of personal reasons) and I can see how your acceptance of all of the little ways that Hannah wants to care for you brings you closer. When you said that she would offer things like tea and sweatpants when you’re grumpy I practically smiled out loud! I wish my husband would watch your videos and take notes, he could learn a thing or two from you, Shane. 🙂

I have 2 anniversaries every year. My husband and I failed at divorce, and remarried almost 20 years to the day we got divorced. So now I have anniversaries in February and August!

This is one of my favorite videos. My fiancé and I are so much like you two. We bonded over our love of food and learned how to cook together, which was scary but so much fun. We call it cooking adventures and have got to the point where we are coming up with our own recipes and are trying lots of different ingredients. We also dislike people which makes no sense cause we go to craft shows to sell our products. I think we would be friends but the kind of friends that only talk every once in awhile cause I can’t deal with the expectations of an actual friendship. Thanks for sharing this video.

I am an old retired teacher of primary age children and I thought between them and my blessed family through adoption...I'd seen it all...but you two have opened my eyes to couplings just not thought of. That was such a great video! And a nice treat for Hannah. There aren't a lot of men who feel secure enough to unabashedly share (with the world, no less!) how much and WHY they love their wives. Hannah knows she scored with Shane, just like he did with her. So she's right - they are perfect for each other!
