One of the things I love about this duet is you know Jongdae's not holding back. He doesn't have to worry about overpowering powerhouse Liyin. Flawless performance. Seamless harmonization. These two should be each other's official duet partners.
Also, the fact that she sung this when she had a fever and went to the hospital just before this performance. I don't is she is better than Taeyeon though. :P

Honestly, the only problem with her (watch Zhang Liyin's old videos) is lack of stage presence, which is VERY unfortunate. Her voice is beautiful, and I'm glad she is no longer AWOL, because I miss her a heck of a lot.
I like when Zhang Li Yin speaks, her voice is soft then when she sings it's like woah o_o even Wang Lee Hom could not believe a voice came out of someone as young as herself back in the days & this has to be my fav. Version especially as these 2 look comfortable with each other; in an interview Chen mentioned her being a noona yet he wants to protect her like a younger sister & how they spent a lot of time together in order to perfect Chen's Chinese ^___^ ahhh so sweet this duet
The way she was looking at him, especially near the end, was heartwarming. To me, it seemed like she was smiling at him and telling him that he did well ^^ I loved this version. Chen's pronunciation sounds magnificent and Zhang Li Yin's voice is amazing
To be honest, it's hard to judge one of these versions being better over the others... But, I guess that the Chinese version was more...emotional? Maybe because it's live, but I felt like Chen and Zhang Li Yin really connected and built a climax in the song and it was amazing x
Zhang Li Ying's voice control, technique, dynamism and vocal color are so good. She's really one of the best singers SM have. You can really hear in this song how she attacks the notes. There's no doubt vocal wise this duo outshines the other two versions. I strongly believe Chen is born to be a ballad singer and Zhang Li Yin is just amazing. she has so much control, her techniques are great and can effortlessly put so much emotions into the song.
Li yin also made the song even more difficult to sing compared to Tae yeons version. What li yin did was she exerted even more vocal control then taetae did and she knew when to drop the note to as low as possible and raise it to high and deep as possible which is difficult and requires really precise vocal control. Not to mention she matched Chen’s tempo perfectly. She let him dictate the tempo and she matched it. Li yin’s vocals are powerful

He has a manly face and most people (espically in Korea) like baby face idols. 2. The people who like Chen is in their 20's or mature, cause they admire his powerful voice and efforts. They have known how difficult did he experience when he choosed ExoM. 3. He can't speak Chinese. That's a problem. I've been following Liyin for years and despite a 5 year hiatus, she has never given up on her dreams and come back stronger and mature than ever. Such a nice performance from the two.

Other than Kyuhyun, I think Chen has now become the one Korean who can sing Mandarin with the best pronounciation to me. He has improved so much since his debut, even I can't help but feel proud for him!
LI Yin is the epidomy of perfection when she sings. OMG she has a really soft and gentle touch when she sings and not to mention she can sing with power if the song requires it. Li Yin, really love this girl. I hope this means a comeback for her this year, i really hope so. THis girl is too talented not to be.

If it was a normal love song I'll be 100% in agreement with your comment but the Korean song is about a couple who just broke up, they're regretting their decision, but they don't want to let the other person know so instead of saying I’m sorry or let's get back together they just breath trough the phone. Do you think a couple like that would be making eye contact and laughing, no they'll be awkward and frustrated I think that's the feeling they were trying to transmit and you can see they're effort at the end when they're trying their best to not smile and have a grim face. (Taeyeon even had to close her eyes because she laugh easily, lol that dork :P).
I don't know if the Korean and Chinese version have the same lyrics because they sometime change them but the main theme should be the same, if we analyze just base on than Taeyeon and Jonghyun version feels more natural, it feels more like a sad ending witch go very well with the lyrics.
Yoyo Armani I disagree. Singing with emotion doesn't necessarily mean singing with happy emotions. Chen and Liyin perfectly portrayed the emotions of heartbreak and pain while singing to each other with a feeling of yearning and regret. They broke up, and are apart, but they still look to/for each other. And really, that's the interesting part of a love ballad performed by two people, their interaction/eye-contact and exchange. If that's not shown in the performance, what's the difference between the performance and the studio version of the song? Might as well just listen to it on iTunes if there's no interaction in the performance to make it stand out in some way.
gigo518 Ok I think I didn't express myself well on my last comment I didn't say vhen and Liyin sang happily, they expressed the sadness of song very well Chen voice is the best for me it suit the song perfectly and Zhen Liyin I didn't know about her till now but she's definitely on my radar now. What I was trying to say is that compared to Taeyeon and Jonghyun version, they looked more happy (their way of acting nor their singing) when you see their performance it feel like they broke up in the heat of the moment but now that they calmed down their love for each other is stronger than the reason they broke up so they're most likely geeting back together while in the korean version even thought they haven't forgotten each other at all they haven't gotten over the reason they broke up so it feels much sadder. As to the reason why the korean version lacked so much interaction is obviously because she was having problem with her earpiece, if you've seen some of Taeyeon live performance you should know she tend to close her eyes when she's singing high notes or difficult parts but in this case she had them close almost the whole time, if you looke close you will notice she start acting weird after pressing her earpiece that mean she couldn't hear herself very well that's why she lost track of her surrounding, this of course is not an excuse as she is a professional and she should be prepared yo handled all kind of situation but even if is not an excuse, it is the reason of why she did that. Now if you watch some of Taeyeon and Jonghyun lives on inkigayo(best one) or music bank you may see why I say their version suit better the lyrics(or the korean lyrics at least) or you might not as it just a feeling I get so it doesn't mean everyone will feel as I feel. I love both version thought because they feel loke to completely different songs to me (only when watching then live).
chen developed his mandarin speaking skills bc he's been close with the chinese members even before debut. they grew on each other so much that jongdae even volunteered to be in exo-m

I've always been a fan of Zhang Li Yin and was super happy when I knew Chen has a duet with her. I love his voice and I love it more when it blend perfectly with hers. Oh my God I can't lie this is the best duet here in the SM The Ballad. They comfortable with each other. It both pleasant to look and hear. Both of them nailed the song. No one voice over power each other. They sang with damn good comfortable chemistry. And they both got the feeling of this song. They understand how to express the song. Even I'm acknowledge a big fan of Taeyeon and Jonghyun but Chen and Ri In (Li Yin) did the best here. And also Changmin and Krystal ummm you know.
Honestly it's such a waste that Zhang Li Yin staying with SM. She's hardly promoted or put in front of the Korean TV. I think that she should have waaaaay more publicity with such a talented voice.

you can tell artists are good if you prefer live over studio :D i can only listen to their live versions. studio version just pales in comparison (even though i know it's still them). i also convert the video lives to mp3! XD even though the sound quality is overall lower i just love the vocal quality so much more

Best version for me too. They both complement each other's voice perfectly ... sounded like an OST for a drama. SM really need to get Zhang Li Ying out more, her voice is so beautiful and full of emotion, her talent is seriously under utilized.
To add to that, Liyin was actually sick that day. That's why her face here is a bit puffier looking than how she typically looks because she went to the hospital to get a drip before the performance.
Whenever i watch this performance, all i can think of is 'damn, it's such a waste that Zhang Li Yin is under SM' :( I mean, it's not like she isn't successful in Korea, look how well 'Timeless' was. Korean Ver: JongHuyn didn't do it very well, his voice is a little bit lower than the song, so it's difficult for him to sing Japanese Ver: Krystal's voice may not really siuts the song even she has a great voice

Oh my goodness Zhang Li Yin freaking killed me with the emotions portrayed in her voice. This is why she's one of my favorite soloist please SM we need more of her promotions and honestly combine that with Chen's amazing vocals they make one heck of a duet. Freaking cried so much listening to this version and even though the MV already made me cry this just add so much more emotions.

I love the rich, mature sound of Chen's voice in this performance. I want more of this tone from him in EXO's tracks. I never really hear it outside of his live performances, which is a huge shame. And, of course, Liyin always has a lovely voice, and it's a joy to hear her sing alongside my bias.

just watched jonghyun and taeyeon perform breath on music core livestream... omg, still i had to come here directly after to listen to chen and liyin. shinee is my #1 bias but - sorry jjong T__T - chen and liyin are just TOO amazing singing this. i feel their emotion so much more than jjong/taeyeon duet. i really hope that chen/liyin can perform breath on a korean music show just once :

LI Yin is the epidomy of perfection when she sings. OMG she has a really soft and gentle touch when she sings and not to mention she can sing with power if the song requires it. Chen and Li Yin performance are way better than Jonghyun and Taeyeon......They really showed more interaction and emotion with each other during there performance.....And that's how duet song should be performed........
If it was a normal love song I'll be 100% in agreement with your comment but the Korean song is about a couple who just broke up, they're regretting their decision, but they don't want to let the other person know so instead of saying I’m sorry or let's get back together they just breath trough the phone. Do you think a couple like that would be making eye contact and laughing, no they'll be awkward and frustrated I think that's the feeling they were trying to transmit and you can see they're effort at the end when they're trying their best to not smile and have a grim face. (Taeyeon even had to close her eyes because she laugh easily, lol that dork :P).
I don't know if the Korean and Chinese version have the same lyrics because they sometime change them but the main theme should be the same, if we analyze just base on than Taeyeon and Jonghyun version feels more natural, it feels more like a sad ending witch go very well with the lyrics.
Yoyo Armani I disagree. Singing with emotion doesn't necessarily mean singing with happy emotions. Chen and Liyin perfectly portrayed the emotions of heartbreak and pain while singing to each other with a feeling of yearning and regret. They broke up, and are apart, but they still look to/for each other. And really, that's the interesting part of a love ballad performed by two people, their interaction/eye-contact and exchange. If that's not shown in the performance, what's the difference between the performance and the studio version of the song? Might as well just listen to it on iTunes if there's no interaction in the performance to make it stand out in some way.
gigo518 Ok I think I didn't express myself well on my last comment I didn't say vhen and Liyin sang happily, they expressed the sadness of song very well Chen voice is the best for me it suit the song perfectly and Zhen Liyin I didn't know about her till now but she's definitely on my radar now. What I was trying to say is that compared to Taeyeon and Jonghyun version, they looked more happy (their way of acting nor their singing) when you see their performance it feel like they broke up in the heat of the moment but now that they calmed down their love for each other is stronger than the reason they broke up so they're most likely geeting back together while in the korean version even thought they haven't forgotten each other at all they haven't gotten over the reason they broke up so it feels much sadder. As to the reason why the korean version lacked so much interaction is obviously because she was having problem with her earpiece, if you've seen some of Taeyeon live performance you should know she tend to close her eyes when she's singing high notes or difficult parts but in this case she had them close almost the whole time, if you looke close you will notice she start acting weird after pressing her earpiece that mean she couldn't hear herself very well that's why she lost track of her surrounding, this of course is not an excuse as she is a professional and she should be prepared yo handled all kind of situation but even if is not an excuse, it is the reason of why she did that.
Now if you watch some of Taeyeon and Jonghyun lives on inkigayo(best one) or music bank you may see why I say their version suit better the lyrics(or the korean lyrics at least) or you might not as it just a feeling I get so it doesn't mean everyone will feel as I feel. I love both version thought because they feel loke to completely different songs to me (only when watching then live).

Oh my God I can't lie this is the best duet here in the SM The Ballad. They comfortable with each other. It both pleasant to look and hear. Both of them nailed the song. No one voice over power each other. They sang with damn good comfortable chemistry. And they both got the feeling of this song. They understand how to express the song. Even I'm acknowledge a big fan of Taeyeon and Jonghyun but Chen and Ri In (Li Yin) did the best here. And also Changmin and Krystal ummm you know.

I'm really impressed by the female vocalist. Chen's veins are popping out while homegirl is just chillin' as she performs. So effortless.
To add to that, Liyin was actually sick that day. That's why her face here is a bit puffier looking than how she typically looks because she went to the hospital to get a drip before the performance.
Whenever i watch this performance, all i can think of is 'damn, it's such a waste that Zhang Li Yin is under SM' :( I mean, it's not like she isn't successful in Korea, look how well 'Timeless' was. And if SM promoted her better in china she would've went famous... she's such a great singer and I'm sad there isn't more people who appreciate her voice

I can't understand Chinese or Korean so my vote always goes for the one with the most pleasant sounding voice...and in EXO(in my opinion) that is Chen. He's voice is so easy on the ears and it was made for singing ballads. I love ballads.

This is why she's one of my favorite soloist please SM we need more of her promotions and honestly combine that with Chen's amazing vocals they make one heck of a duet. Freaking cried so much listening to this version and even though the MV already made me cry this just add so much more emotions.
