In which I muse about my book of the month. #readerreview #booktube #booktubereview #bestbooks #bookrecommendations #bookreview Book discussed: Nineveh by Henrietta Rose-Innes
I am delighted as a South African hat you chose Henrietta Rose Innes There are so many wonderful South African writers. I loved The Rock Alphabet and Homing by Henrietta Rose Innes. Do read them too Come to Cape Town please
Thanks for the recommendation, I'm looking forward to reading this book! I have been wanting to read more South African literature, but not been sure where to start.
Loved The Black Dress, plot twists galore, thank you so much for the recommendation.❤ Nineveh sounds interesting and agree character name does sound Dickensian.
Great recommendation. In my local church yard there is a grave for Hetty Bobbins, I always think it would be a great name for a book character. I have embarked on the Louise Penny Three Pines series and enjoying the first book (lots more to go!) 📚
As a South African I am embarrassed to admit that I haven’t read anything by her yet ( she has written a number of other books} - so off to the library to remedy it this week. Thanks Louise, for alerting me to this book.
Hi @philnasmith9755 I'm wondering if you have any recommendations for other books by South African authors? I hope you don't mind me asking. I was born in Johannesburg (52 years ago), was only 2 years old when my family moved back to Europe. But I am looking for ways to reconnect with my country of birth. BTW I'm not used to commenting on TH-cam and not sure really how it works, or if there are any unwritten "rules".
@@simonekendoka Hi Simone, off the top of my head some books I have very much enjoyed : Barbara Trapido (born / raised in RSA) with her “series” starting with “Brother of the more Famous Jack”, Marita van der Vyfer (Afrikaans author translated into English) “Entertaining Angels” ; Sally Andrew (The Tannie Maria Mysteries); Richard Rive “ Buckingham Palace District Six”; Fred Khumalo: “Two Tons o’ Fun” - and the Master , Alan Paton: “Cry the Beloved Country”. These books have been around for a while and will give you a snapshot into the lives of very diverse communities and times in South Africa. Hope you find a few jewels among these.
@@simonekendoka Afterthought: If you are interested in poetry, I highly recommend WORLDSCAPES compiled by Robin Malan which, in my opinion, contains (inter alia) the best representation of South African poets from various traditions over the decades. A truly wonderful collection of verse which has given me much joy.
@@philnasmith9755Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to reply - I so appreciate that! I will immediately check these books out and put them on my wish list ❤
