I'm late to the comments but amazing book about vampires/Dracula but different from typical vampire books is book by Elizabeth Kostova's "The Historian". Worth trying. I've read it years ago and still remember it. And obviously, but probably like you mentioned, too romanticised for your liking, Anne Rice's "The Interview with the Vampire". Awesome book! Very funny vampires book by Christopher Moore's "Bloodsucking Fiends. A love story". This one is very comical, so probably not the genre you're into, but maybe someone will try it. Nice content and Happy New Year 2024!

I started clapping wildly when you brought up I Am Legend. Absolutley brilliant book and certianly not typical "vampires". Trying to get my father (who hates vampires) to read this book. It certainly helped comparing them to zombies other than vampires lol.

So lovely to have found your channel! I'm an avid reader and I always enjoy hearing what other avid readers are into. I was never into vampire books until a friend recommended Anne Rice's books. We were are the bookstore together and I was trying to find something to take home. He suggested I try "The Vampire Lestat". He told me I'd love it but I was hesitant. So he said "try it and if you don't like it, we'll come back here and I'll treat you to another book". Well, I returned to the bookstore halfway through the book to pick up the other three: "The Queen of The Damned", "The Tale of the Body Thief" and "Memnoch the Devil". I could not get enough of this woman's writing style. I finished all three of the books in a very short period of time. Anne Rice was an extraordinarily talented writer. I'd recommend all four of these if you haven't read them. If you do pick them up, I'd really like to hear your opinion on them.

I'm reading Blindsight right now and it's been such a revelation! I knew the conceit going in but I didn't expect it to be so nuanced and thought provoking in the way it is. A real intellectual and philosophical challenge in the best way. (And for the habitual science fiction reader, really stretches you if you think you're used to future human weirdnesses.)

One of my favourites is 'The Vampire Tapestry' by Suzy McKee Charnas which presents the vampire as a biological entity rather than a supernatural one. I found the ending quite haunting. 'The Night Inside' by Nancy Baker is quite good too, as you get to see the transformation from human into vampire, with not only the physical changes but the psychological ones too.

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires keeps moving its way up my TBR pile. Have you read The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice? I've only read the first three so far. Interview with the Vampire was okay, but the second book is my favourite (The Vampire Lestat).

One of the more interesting recent bits of vampire fiction ive come across is “Project Vampire Killer” its more about the magic of art, specifically film making but it does some really cool stuff and deals with some cool metaphysical philosophy. Also one of the also the book “night blood” recently got re published and is basically salems lot if told by cannon films…”have you ever read salems lot and thought ‘this could use more uzis’” its a blast! And lastly necroscope is a really bizarre and really cool scifi vampire tale that is deeply entrenched in cold war madness. Great video and definitely gonna read fledgling now:)

I love Dracula. I'm due for a re-read. I read it 30 years ago in college when I should have been studying Hegel. You're absolutely right, some of the scenes are incredibly eerie. Hollywood has never done it justice. If memory serves me correctly, I saw a BBC production about 15 years ago starring Louis Jourdan that came out in the late 70s and remember thinking that was about as close an adaptation as I've ever seen. Need to watch that again, too.

My favorite vampire novel, and one of my favorite horror novels, is Let The Right One In by John Lindqvist. I haven't read any of them, but want to read all of them!! (Except Dracula, I read that, and enjoyed it!)
Dracul was a really good sequel, considering it was just published within the last 5 years or so. It's based off of Bram Stoker's notes, and the author JD Barker is a good writer.
Like you, I've never been much into Vampire fiction, but willing to make exceptions. The books mentioned here have already been on my TBR and most already on Kindle... just need to read them!

Curious as to whether you've ever read "Carmilla" by Sheridan Le Fanu, written twenty five years prior to Stoker's novel. The primary vampire is a female named Carmilla. It's interesting because both the female vampire and her female victims are not portrayed as completely "predator/prey." They do experience attraction to one another. Plus the novella does tend to relegate the males to an almost helpless status. I would go into more detail but I wouldn't want to ruin your possible reading by loading on spoilers. It is of interest if only as a 19th Century "bookend" to "Dracula."

As someone who shares your love both of Octavia Butler and of Blindsight (though Watts' other works are more of a mixed bag), this video definitely gave me some useful pointers!
Since you asked for suggestions, one vampire novel that I think you might enjoy is "Fevre Dreams" by George RR Martin. It's very much a vampire novel written by someone looking through a scifi lens (though the book itself isn't scifi exactly, this was way before GRRMs major move towards fantasy) and contains some interesting themes about minds and personhood; it's not as deliberate (or cynical) as Blindsight, being more capital-R Romantic about the subject, but it is still an engaging exploration of what it means to be a person through a lens of vampires as written by a sci-fi author.

I am currently listening to Blood Road by Edo Van Belkom.( A Canadian author ....yeah for Canadian representation!!!). It is a vampire tale, but one that is very much a thriller first. The synopsis has us following a truck driver who abducts girls he finds hitching rides, who also happens to be a vampire. I am not finished it yet , but so far I am really appreciating the way the author is able to make me believe that it just might be possible for "real" vampires to exist by blending into our modern world......

If I can recommend one author, it would have to be Jasper Kent and his 5 Danilov books.
This is a magnificent series of five novels spanning Russian history from the French invasion of 1812 to the revolutions of 1917. The books recount the adventures of Aleksei Ivanovich Danilov and his descendants and their battle with a monstrous Vampire.
Kent went to Russia to be able to better write his books, and it paid off. If you love vampire books, you do not want to miss these.
I always expected that someday some movie producer would discover this series and turn it into an incredible tv series. So far, this has not happened, sadly.

The God of Endings by Jacqueline Holland is a really good vampire story. It recently released within the past few months and I found it highly enjoyable.

I still wait for Netflix's Midnight Mass novelization .. it has to happen...someday :|
I've read Dracula, first chapters are awesome with the atmosphere and only for those it worth a try, the rest is a mix of small creepy thinggies and cheesy narration and a somewhat attempt of detective work. It's one of the rare occasions when I say the movie (the 90's version) is more good than the book overall.
I was surprised of The Wanting by Campbell Black (found the book by accident in a cabin in the mountains - he he ).. it never says vampires .. but ... and that is the thing I loved most about it.
I still have to try I am legend.

I liked Enter, Night by Canadian Michael Rowe. About a woman, her daughter and brother in law who return to their small Northern Ontario home town in 72 just as a vampire also settles into town. There's LGBT rep. I can see it being compared to Salems Lot but it quicker paced and without King's idiosyncrasies.

I personally really didn't like the sourthern book club's guide to slaying vampires, because I prefer not as horror type books. I also found it very hard to relate to the characters. I personally loved empire of the vampire but its more fantasy based and not scientific.
