100% in agreement with you on this , and my personal experiences sadly lead me to believe it is sadly arrogance, selfishness and entitlement on the part of the overwhelming number of cyclists who behave like this, rather than ignorance of the law.

I really do agree with you. I am a 70 year old cyclist. Started in 1969 . Had 4 years off in 74 to 1978. So 52 years of riding 7 years of racing.
That road is too dangerous. And to place a cycle way with parked cars there is also far too dangerous. The foot path out side my house is scary some times. A couple of bikes ride fast far too fast.
A few days ago i was riding to a cycleway. And a policeman yelled at me from the inside of the car. It was slightly down hill and i was rideing at about 50 kph. And going the speed of the traffic.
Not detered i have accumulated 500, 000 kilometers in life. My longest ride at 35 years of age was 300 kilometers at 30kph average speed.
I educated myself in the beginning ,on British 🇬🇧. Time trialists. How good you Brits are. Great Job dear man. You are my friend.
Ps. I change my helmet colours so Police dont get to know me. I was a officer of the law once. And in my resignation . I said . I am going to be a cyclist. Great stuff Mate ! 🇦🇺

I have been a keen cyclist for years. I never cycle on the pavement. I used to live in rural kent and Sussex but returned to Middlesbrough Ten years ago, i used to criticise those cycling on pavements but after a while realised i was the local nutter. It's illegal but the police don't give a damn.
The problem cyclists have, as opposed to chavs on bikes, is that car drivers think they should be on the pavement too, because they now see so many on pavements.
Don't get me started about wearing black and cycling in the dark without lights.

Same here, live in London so slower speeds but endemic since the Lime bikes took off. As you say it starts a chain reaction off in some other road drivers. The wearing of dark clothes and using your phone is another dreadful scourge. I cycle most days and see that this has taken off due to the lack of policing.

I suffered a broken leg when one hit me and they fled the scene

But even in court they showed no respect for what they had done.

I have told this story on some channel, but I'll repeat it here.
One night in the early '70s, following chucking out time at the _Oliver Cromwell_ in St Ives, a pal and I were walking along _Filbert's Walk_ - a narrow footpath (i.e. a _way_ for pedestrians only, not being adjacent to a carriageway) with deep water-filled fenland ditches on each side. I regained consciousness after being dragged out of the water in a ditch where I had landed, head submerged, after having being hit in the back by a high-speed cyclist. Had it not been for my pal's rapid rescue I'd not have survived, and had it not been for several pints of muscle relaxant I'd have been badly injured.
Footways and footpaths are for pedestrians, carriageways are for vehicles - which includes bicycles.

As someone who has cycled on the pavements before, I am empathetic to people who feel safer there than sharing space with cars. It's not just a case of safety but also respect. I'm a really unconfident cyclist, I'm not familiar with all the rules of the road and I don't want to be a danger or a bother to anyone.
With that said, I would always pull over to one side and allow people to pass, or use the road when it was clear to move ahead of someone. For me, with my anxiety, not feeling able to use the pavements would've been a factor that further isolated me from going outside and the fact that it was sort of de facto allowed gave me a greater capacity to engage with the world outside my flat.
I'm curious, Tim, is your issue mostly with the principle of bikes being on the pavement or is it with the conduct of the people riding their bikes on the pavement being dangerous? If everyone one the pavements cycled along at a leisurely pace and gave way to people on foot, would you still find that bothersome?

In terms of casualties, cyclists causing pedestrian casualties is a statistical fluke compared to cars causing pedestrian casualties, thus set the priorities right. Cyclists might be a nuisance, but cars are the real danger. The cyclists are on the pavement because there’s no cycling infrastructure and cars pose a danger to cyclists too, safer pavement begins with safer roads and less car centric infrastructure.

More and more pavements near me are becoming "Unsegregated shared use paths". Apparently this is best for both pedestrians and cyclists. It also happens to be the cheapest option for the council. They don't even have to paint a line on the ground. Even if such a scheme could work, it is clear many of the pavements aren't wide enough even before the inevitable two-on two-off car parking. It sadly will take serious accidents before they even start to listen.

That amount of times I have been cycling on the road and a pedestrian blindly crosses the road without looking causing me to take avoiding action is also a big problem. The problem with pedestrians is their path is unpredictable and predicting where they will suddenly decide to go is difficult. Most of the time they are not looking where they are going and have no idea whats going on around them.On shared pathways they rarely follow a straight path and weave about from side to side which makes passing them a guessing game on which way they will deviate next. We all need to share the space and get to where we are going while trying not to get in each others way. If everyone took more care and payed attention to their surroundings things would go much more smoothly.

In my view, the issue I have been encountering with bicycles is really really unpleasent. To start with its very common electric-powered bicycles, they cross zebra crossings at almost full speed, normally you are accustomed to pedestrians crossing at a certain speed, suddenly they are in front of you, they drive while looking at their mobile phones, others without their hands on the handles, others joy riding with their friends, they overtake from the right, the left, against traffic with bright glaring strong lights, you do not know if it is a car with one light or a bicycle, then the worst part are bicycles which have baskets in front or back, they put 2-3 toddlers in them and drive aggressively, or drive wobbly as they are not able to balance because movement of the toddlers, they drive with the mentality that they are faster and want to prove at the expense of their security. To my knowledge there are no regulations to do periodic checks or to regulate what designs need to be, or to check their brakes, and lights, and tires. It nerve wrecking every time while driving a car, it is really scary, today I noticed a bicycle on my right, I wanted to turn to the right, but I did not know whether to stop to let him pass or not, I stopped, he did not pass and I turned to the right. It's not fun.

It would appear that there are more pressing laws to attend to with the staff available. Take privately owned electric scooters for instance they are according to the laws, prohibited on public roads. Same reason Professor, lack of personnel.

We frequently have groups of cyclists riding together and you have to drive behind them for miles as it's mainly unsafe to overtake. They never pull over and let folk pass. Sometimes they speed recklessly downhill (legally they need not sick to speed limits) past hamlets and groups of roadside houses, This summer it's been a real problem and its getting worse. Cycling on public road needs regulation but all governments see is the health and tourism advantages of cycling.

  • @philfenn3991

I'd have to check the law but the prohibition on riding a bike on the pavement used to be conditional on the diameter of the wheels (mainly so it didn't force young children on small bikes into the road). I suspect that the problem is far worse in London. I used to work in Whitehall and I saw cyclists come over Westminster bridge, jump the lights, ride the wrong way around parliament square and then cut straight through the pedestrians crossing at a controlled crossing point while swearing at them for getting in the way on many occasions. In case that sounds suicidal, there is a brief interlude on the Whitehall side of parliament square when all the traffic lights are red and none of the cars are moving. Putting a bike lane on the pavement requires wider pavements that we usually have. It is relatively common in German towns such as Munich where the half of the pavement nearest the road is reserved for bikes and strolling along in the bike lane will allow you to learn lots of new German words that are not usable in polite society, usually ending with the word touristsen 😁

If a cyclist deems a section of road too dangerous on which to ride then (rather than illegally put pedestrians at risk by cycling on the footpath) it might be sensible to dismount and walk beside their bike until they reach a safer stretch of road.
If one expects motorists to have respect for cyclists, it is hypocritical for cyclists not to have respect for pedestrians. We need a little consideration all round.

Once, while waiting for a Chicago Transit Authority bus, I nearly stepped back into a speeding bicycle's path across the sidewalk ridden by a teenager; whom should have known better than ride with careless disregard for pedestrians. For this reason I would never report them, so I'm like on their side. I've lived in this area for a long time and always find the children well mannered. They are a credit to their parents. Dear Professor Wilson,
The question that must be asked and answered is "Where should they be cycling in stead?"
If your concern is for the safety of the situation then asking cyclists to share the road with cars is to ask them to put themselves in danger. A cyclist is at much greater risk of suffering injury as a consequence of collision with a car than a pedestrian is at risk of injury from a collision with a cyclist. When deprived of any other option what you are currently experiencing is the safest possible situation for everyone.
What you are looking at here is a systemic problem. Cars have been allowed to become so large, fast and dangerous that they've forced all other forms of traffic off the road. The design of the infrastructure you are using is not fit for purpose for accomodating both cars, pedestrians and cyclists. Of course, to undo a century of bad policy is difficult and above all expensive. So one can understand why the council is reluctant to address the problem.
    Sincerely,
    Semni.

I hear that, the number of reports and stories you hear of cyclists hit by cars, run off the road or thrown into traffic after hitting a pot hole in a poorly maintained road is growing.
Cyclists are demonised no matter what to the point some people in cars think it's fun to knock people off bikes.
There was a report in the news that one woman was purposely run down while she was out on a bike in the past couple of weeks.
Even when bike paths are put in to accommodate riders then either the media or another right wing group obsessed with fighting 'the green agenda' go on the war path to have them removed.
There's a Greenway between and where I work which in the past few years has had a section closed off as the bridge has a crack in it redirecting me forcing me to add 10 - 15 min to my journey as I have to come off the green way and go through a town then down a busy badly maintained road heavy with industrial traffic (lorries) all because they won't fix the bridge.

It is - a little rant? I don't think so! I have often agreed with Professor Tim on much and often! Actually, most cyclists do adhere to the helmet, visibility and proper lights. The E/Scooters however, do NOT! And those who use or have them - misuse and abuse these. It's sometimes damn dangerous! Very sadly, there's no sense anymore! And that I think, has been consigned to the rubbish bins ! As had sense and reason! So you of those out there - who malign Professor Tim and others for being ' Little Englanders' I am speaking of public safety! Those E/Scooters are a public hazard.!
One more thing, people, publically owned E/Scooters are often parked near Bus Stops or on physical guiding sites to pedestrian crossing. Not far from Parson Street on the edge of Bedminster in Bristol, there's a traffic junction and often - next to some advertising billboards is a pedestrian crossing - there's often 10 E/Scooters and some Bikes owned by the same company often parked there badly - interfering with special guidance paving stones for visually impaired people. When I come across these I usually will shift some of these on my way into work! To clear access for the visually impaired people. At the top of Winterstoke Road in the same area. There's usually a few that are parked just as irresponsibly - I get a bit more than fed up with these and in fact there's a old stairwell on the junction there which leads to an old air raid shelter. From WW2 ! Many was the time that I considered putting one of these blasted E/Scooter down it. To date - I have put one of these upended but not into the old Air Raid shelter stairwell - I have left it deliberately short of that, as a warning shot. Ultimately I may have to follow through with actually doing so! My patience in this instance is running a bit thin. It's not a question of ' if!' but 'When?' One of these wretched things is going to end up down that stairwell - maybe not tomorrow of Thursday, not next week or next month, or next year! But I can see that I will end up doing it! As a casualty of a WW2 Air Raid shelter! I will admit that it's getting me fed up with it! Patience is starting to run thin!
Well, something has got to be done about - Professor! Can't help but agree with you, dear fellow! Rugby isn't the only place with difficulties with this. There's room for Bristol to join it - as well!

I can understand and sympathize with you. I hate having bikes coming up behind me, especially as I am deaf.
What practical affordable solution are you suggesting?

Polly Friedhoff, struck by a bicycle while walking with a friend on 20 November 2022, died in hospital 2 December.
It's rare, but it does happen.

@@nigelgarrett7970 I'm sorry to hear that. I hope the stats aren't being messed with.
As a pedestrian cyclist motor cyclist car driver and van driver. I can see a complex issue, with no cheap solutions.

Get a white stick, pretend that you are visually impaired and accidentally poke a spoke. 😮🤔😹 Drawing pins and a roll of blue tack and create your own stinger. 😮🤔😹 I rescued two collie's from lunatic breeders by paying over the odds just to get them out of the madness. Locals complained that the breeders had no control over their 🐕 s who were not dangerous, just bored out of their highly intelligent minds and the advice from the grown ups to the concerned citizens was film yourself being bitten. 🤔😹☮️
