also!! i just wanted to mention that i also had an issue with training my spine. i also learned that trick from tiktok and messed up a book or two before i realized the following: make sure the spine is completely flat on the surface and take an object thats flat and have a tiny bit of weight to it (i use a tiny 3x5 box made of cardboard) and i use that to go through sections and completely flatten the page. unfortunately using my hands weren't enough 😭 this has been so useful for me and i was able to preserve my bookspine while making my book flexible and easy to read / hold. ik this was unsolicited advice but i hope that helps you with your future paperbacks! (from someone who also hate cracking spines).
