That's crazy. I know israel is a Jewish state but I really didn't think it is such a religious country, israel always strike me as "hip" or liberal place but no civil wedding is a shock to me. Mazal Tov. You omitted the obvious. Only religious Jewish weddings are recognized by the State of Israel. But what if you are an Israeli who is Muslim or Christian?

In Israel, each religion has its own institutions responsible, among other things, for weddings and divorces. Those who choose to marry in a civil marriage abroad present the relevant paperwork and are registered as married at the Ministry of the Interior. Same-sex couples too. Those who choose not to marry are protected by a set of laws that regulate their affairs and many couples claim that this is better than an official wedding. In Judaism, a couple living together is considered married and if they separate, they have to be officially divorced in a religious court
