I played this game every game after school. Couldn’t stop thinking about it as I got older. The main reason I’ve been gaming as long as I have been. Will always be a classic
I can't really say there's many other driving games I loved more than FlatOut 2. Ultimate Carnage simply made it better. Please, Bugbear, come back to us!
The damage model in this game is the best ever. The detail is incredible. If you knock off your front end you can actually see the blades of the engine fan spinning around. Those small details are all over these cars. I have never seen such attention to damage details before in any game before or since.
The physics for groundbreaking for a PS2 game The damage the smoke the fire The progressive instability of the suspension as the car gets further damaged and begins to bounce uncontrollably it even had better visual effects as far as smoke goes then its second game but at least the first two were made by bugbear and of course their newest title wreckfest
Besides FlatOut 2 there's also FlatOut: Head-On (a port of sorts of FO2 for the PSP) and Ultimate Destruction (essentially an enhanced FO2 for PS3/360) There's also a FlatOut 3 for the PC and a Wii game but those weren't done by the original developers, and it shows. Bugbear have recently made Ridge Racer Unbounded which, while not having drivers flying out of windshields, is a load of fun.
yes, it's almost 9 years old :) and yes, i start feeling old too, when i see peaople saying about something that it's classic, with which i almost grew up (i'm 26 now, i was almost 18 back then, when it was released.... yeah, i feel old :D)
Anyone else click on this video because you thought the title spelled out "FALLOUT?" Either way Classic Game Room is the best for any video game review!
Hey, good news, the guys at Bugbear announced a while ago that they're working on a new game, and their teaser trailer looked like it could very well be a new FlatOut style game! :D Also, Flatout 2 is probably one of my top 3 favorite racing games.
FlatOut2/Ultimate Carnage is fantastic. I played that for weeks. It's very hard in the later levels, but still feels fair, which is something you don't come across in games that much anymore. One of my other favourite PS2 racers that doesn't get a lot of attention is Mashed: Fully Loaded. It's much like Micro Machines and fantastic in 2 player mode.
spent the past hour trying to remember this old game. the only clue I had was a lyric "I stole the ring from the Golem to watch and wither away now baby". which turned out to be from the hiss: back on the radio. I really like this game but I could never get past that first snow level, drove me crazy so I traded it in. the mini games were a lot of fun though.
Ah my god I've been waiting for this for months I was debating sending it in it's just so Mark in every way, Seems like I got beaten to it, glad you liked it.
Bugbear Entertainment is a Finnish video game company who have also made such great titles as Rally Trophy (2001 PC) and Ridge Racer Unbounded (2012 Xbox360, PS3, PC) among others.
I bought this off the used obscure rack at play 'n trade. I thought it was going to be destined to be awful, but it isn't. It's just a hoot to drive around like a maniac destroying half the track. I was impressed by the damage engine, which severely lacks in a lot of games, and the opponents seem to actually fight back if you shove them off the track.
still play both these games on my ps2 occasionally, the sequel is even better! best racing games in existence if you ask me, would love to see a third one on next gen consoles.
***** yeah see i have no idea how to buy games off steam or what the hell steam actually is for that matter.. hate to sound like such an ultra noob but its the truth.
I played this quite a lot on the PC back in the day, it was also great fun for MP, I don't understand how this series didn't really became popular like Burnout or something... I remember I only got it because someone told me it used the same physics midleware as Hl2 (havok), I think. anyway, the PS2 version looks pretty good considering the limitations, the fact that is a multiplatform game, with damage, visible interior, detailed scenery and all. good stuff.
in hungary too! there was also that game called mashed from them, i liked it too! it's quite different, but still awesome :) however i can't mention that many games from them, but the ones i know, have some greatness!
Bugbear entertainment ( the guys that made flatout, flatout 2 and flatout ultimate carnage ) seems to be making a new racing game, likely a spiritual sequel to the flatout series, worth keeping an eye on.
I love being told its "ClassicGameRoom dot come" at the beginning then I get told again on the title card that its ClassicGameRoom then I get told again to visit ClassicGameRoom. com for more. It really cements the fact that this is a ClassicGameRoom video and isnt annoying at all.
I love the HELL out of the FlatOut series, it's severely underappreciated. The only problem I have is that the sequels use different mechanics, so the cars careen off of everything like bouncy balls. FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is still enjoyable online...even though there's hardly anyone out there who plays it nowadays. :'(
Yeah I remember almost everyone at school was really exited when the 2nd one came out :P I guess some games just get way more popular in certain parts of the world.
It's way more popular here in Europe (and on the PC, to be specific). I still maintain that Flatout 2 is perhaps the single greatest arcade racing game of the last decade.
yeah but that wasnt made by the same guys who made this, flatout 2 and ultimate carnage (which was just an expanded version of 2, but still very worth getting)
i loved this game on my xbox. one of the secret highlights of that console generation for me. interesting fact: in germany you drove as crashtestdummies, because the people who rate games here thought it looked too brutal when "real" people fly through the carwindow. no shit. they really changed that.
This is not an obscure PS2 release. Did he stop playing video games completely between the original CGR and CGR HD? Bugbear also made the last Ridge Racer game that came out last year, and they are now making a new Destruction Derby style game.
I remember back when I played this game I had to buy 3 different copies of the game because they would just stop working and then after that I wasn't allowed to get another disc and I've never been able to play it since.
There's actually Flatout 2 and UC, they are separate games. UC has some added gfx flair etc. but Flatout 2 is still the best imo. Probably because it has better AI drivers.
You completely forgot to mention the demolition derby part. So much fun.
This is the game that got me into video games. Still one of my favorite games of all time.
I'm surprised he didn't see their was a demolition derby mode.
Flatout is $1.31 right now on steam
I played this game every game after school. Couldn’t stop thinking about it as I got older. The main reason I’ve been gaming as long as I have been. Will always be a classic
Wow, this is a PS2 game?! It looks gorgeous!
this game is soooooo awesome!!!
played it on the xbox back in the day and it is one of my favourite racing games ever.
This is my favorite game. I love the derbys most tho,
Still one of my favorite games
Avve N 4:55 that poor blockhead.... his attempt to pass foiled by the grinder
I can't really say there's many other driving games I loved more than FlatOut 2. Ultimate Carnage simply made it better.
Please, Bugbear, come back to us!
Just fired this up with a racing cockpit... unbelievable ffb on the wheel and surprisingly excellent handling. And so much fun!!!
The damage model in this game is the best ever. The detail is incredible. If you knock off your front end you can actually see the blades of the engine fan spinning around. Those small details are all over these cars. I have never seen such attention to damage details before in any game before or since.
God, what a memorries... I'm suprised it only came out in 2004. I remeber I used to play shit out of this game when I was younger. :D
The physics for groundbreaking for a PS2 game The damage the smoke the fire The progressive instability of the suspension as the car gets further damaged and begins to bounce uncontrollably it even had better visual effects as far as smoke goes then its second game but at least the first two were made by bugbear and of course their newest title wreckfest
just added all 4 flatout games to my steam wishlist, Thanks Mark
Me and my neighbor Mike would hang out and play this game all the time. The ragdoll physics were hilarious yet gruesome. Fun game :D
Worth mentioning that the mod community for Flatout is still going strong as well with new cars, tracks, mods and conversion packs.
Besides FlatOut 2 there's also FlatOut: Head-On (a port of sorts of FO2 for the PSP) and Ultimate Destruction (essentially an enhanced FO2 for PS3/360)
There's also a FlatOut 3 for the PC and a Wii game but those weren't done by the original developers, and it shows. Bugbear have recently made Ridge Racer Unbounded which, while not having drivers flying out of windshields, is a load of fun.
This game was pretty popular in Brazil.. remember my brother and some school mates raving about it
So many old memories with this game! It is awesome
yes, it's almost 9 years old :)
and yes, i start feeling old too, when i see peaople saying about something that it's classic, with which i almost grew up (i'm 26 now, i was almost 18 back then, when it was released.... yeah, i feel old :D)

There was a Flatout for the 360 4 years ago. It's pretty much the sequel with updated graphics, but when was that a bad thing?
Hey, good news, the guys at Bugbear announced a while ago that they're working on a new game, and their teaser trailer looked like it could very well be a new FlatOut style game! :D

The Flatout games are available on Steam!
This took me about 10 years to find I played this all the time when I was younger 🙁
use to love playing this on the old ps2 and truly one of the first games with softbody physics ah good memory
Ah my god I've been waiting for this for months I was debating sending it in it's just so Mark in every way, Seems like I got beaten to it, glad you liked it.

The commercials for this game I still remember them
I've played this for countless hours. It feels like it wasn't too long ago that I was obsessed with the damn game. It's more than 8 years ago.

There is a third one, and even a forth one!
*****
what? where!? what console!? o_0
The Blade Raziel You can get them both on sale right now on Steam for literally next to nothing, and if you've got steam, I'm feeling generous. :)
*****
yeah see i have no idea how to buy games off steam or what the hell steam actually is for that matter.. hate to sound like such an ultra noob but its the truth.
Dude flatout 3 is the worst......trust me
funny how they used the death scream from Microprose "X-Com UFO Defense". I notice that scream is used in alot of other games and even commercials.
I played this quite a lot on the PC back in the day, it was also great fun for MP, I don't understand how this series didn't really became popular like Burnout or something...
I remember I only got it because someone told me it used the same physics midleware as Hl2 (havok), I think.
anyway, the PS2 version looks pretty good considering the limitations, the fact that is a multiplatform game, with damage, visible interior, detailed scenery and all. good stuff.
The PC gamespy servers for Flatout 2 are still online and there are still people playing it.
in hungary too!
there was also that game called mashed from them, i liked it too! it's quite different, but still awesome :)
however i can't mention that many games from them, but the ones i know, have some greatness!
Theres even a Flatout Ultimate Carnage. Will The Lord Karnage Review it?
I don't feel like the Flatout series has advanced a great deal, but regardless of which one you choose, they're pretty much all fun to play.
Flatout 3 is already released. Not by BugBear, but they are working on a new title which is called "Next car game"
Wow i've only just bought this game locally 2nd hand. Weird he does a review of it a few days later!
lol yeah i remember this, the driver flying out of the windshield when crashing was hilarious
Bugbear entertainment ( the guys that made flatout, flatout 2 and flatout ultimate carnage ) seems to be making a new racing game, likely a spiritual sequel to the flatout series, worth keeping an eye on.
It makes me happy almost every time
“And more soundgarden” 😂😂😂
That was pretty good .
I remember this game! nostalgia overload
my god I haven't played Flatout in forever. I loved this game
Also Flatout Head On on the psp is awsome as well. It's basically a direct port of the ps2 version of Flatout 2 just without the online multiplayer.
Which one had more/the best stunts?
You should do the other 2 flat outs as well
I love being told its "ClassicGameRoom dot come" at the beginning then I get told again on the title card that its ClassicGameRoom then I get told again to visit ClassicGameRoom. com for more. It really cements the fact that this is a ClassicGameRoom video and isnt annoying at all.
Absolutely epic game. Wish they kept the route they started in rather than going all-out arcade.
everything were good until flatout 3 came around
it was from a different developer
CreamDoritos don't forget the fourth one that was not made by bugbear either
Not to mention it's on next gen only
Nope its PC to PC was delayed
You should review PAIN on PS3
Damn... played this and FlatOut 2 on my ps3... 3 weeks ago... i feel old....
I have Flatout Ultimate Carnage, & LOVE that it's a racing game with NO HELMETS! (sending ur driver through the windshield is pure BLISS)
that car deformation is incredible for PS2 era.
This is one of my favorite games ever!
Yeah I remember almost everyone at school was really exited when the 2nd one came out :P I guess some games just get way more popular in certain parts of the world.
yeah i completely agree, that's a fine point you make.
It's way more popular here in Europe (and on the PC, to be specific). I still maintain that Flatout 2 is perhaps the single greatest arcade racing game of the last decade.
FlatOut 2 is still one of the best racing games i've ever played.
This was my first racing game. And still my favorite!
I want to play that! TY very much Mark!
I'm not sure what you mean. The last big releases for PS2 look great.
This came out about the same time as Burnout 2 if I remember correctly. I chose Flatout over Burnout, and I definitely don't regret it!
I still play Flatout 2 till this day. On the PSP and a mac port. ^^
Gonna go play fo1 maybe uc too. i have all flatouts as a fysical copy
yeah but that wasnt made by the same guys who made this, flatout 2 and ultimate carnage (which was just an expanded version of 2, but still very worth getting)
i loved this game on my xbox. one of the secret highlights of that console generation for me.
interesting fact:

Another awesome game from quality developers from Finland! :)
So seat belts don't exist in this game?
Greetings from Finland (Bugbear is a finnish company :) )
This is not an obscure PS2 release. Did he stop playing video games completely between the original CGR and CGR HD?
Bugbear also made the last Ridge Racer game that came out last year, and they are now making a new Destruction Derby style game.
Oh man I loved this game
I remember back when I played this game I had to buy 3 different copies of the game because they would just stop working and then after that I wasn't allowed to get another disc and I've never been able to play it since.
How much does it cost insurance wise for these racers
You forgot to mention the demolition derby events! And that there is a spin off on the psp and a sequel on x360. Win.
The Gamecube undoubtably has the best list of exclusives of all time.
I found this game for $4 in a bargain bin about five years ago. Had no idea what it was and thought why not give it a try. That was a great decision!
I meant more than one, you mentioned there's a sequel, but there are more. :)
Oh god Mark PLEASE review FlatOut Ultimate Carnage! Destruction racing at it's absolute pinnacle :D
I miss the bonus games those were fun!
this game is hardcore, sometimes i enjoy putting my car in neutral and raising those rpms just to hear that loud motor
I miss this game!!!
One of the best racing series out there.
Gas Guzzlers Extreme also made me think of the game Dirt when I first started playing it. it's a little bit similar to this.
There's actually Flatout 2 and UC, they are separate games. UC has some added gfx flair etc. but Flatout 2 is still the best imo. Probably because it has better AI drivers.
I loved this game as a kid! :D
This game has one of the best soundtracks ever.
There was a 3?
I'm surprised you didn't bring up Burnout Mark.
5:03 Who remembers that yelling sound from Quarantine?
I used to love this on the PS2 :(
I played Flatout 2 a lot... great series
aren't plsystation disks black
FlatOut 2 on pc took it to the next level - one of best ever
Original Flatout on PC - best racing game ever.
