I remember this game being really difficult. I don't know if I ever won a race. I usually always ended up playing destruction derby mode. Those were pretty difficult too and over quickly. We need something new like this.
Exactly. The first game was a PINNACLE game for me and I played it to death. I was so pissed when I got this home and found the difficulty curve was too steep and the AI was SOFA King cheap, it sucked all the fun out of it.
At the age of 9-10 or something in one race I noticed how much piles of broken cars are there at the CCR track, then I drove suuuuuper carefully just to finish 2nd! Despite it is not 1st place, it was a massive win for me!
The game was published by Psygnosis, but mainly developed by Reflections. Of course Reflections went on to greater things with their Driver series; but I'd love it if they returned with a DD3 on the PSN store. They have a whole roster of hilarious characters, they could even make the game story-driven in some way. Tekken - on wheels. ;)
I remember legendary Indy Car sportscaster Paul Page was in this game...his epic intros for the Indy 500 are etched in mind forever from my childhood. I wish he still did them for the recent Indy 500s.
Man, I remember playing this for the first time with my best friend and having a blast, but I never could survive a race until one time where literally every other car in the race was totaled so I was left by myself to finish the race in 1st. It was a triumphant moment. :)
Utterly love Destruction Derby 2, one of the few car games I actually do like. I had sooo much fun with Destruction Derby 2 when me and my friend rented it. Psygnosis was one of the best if not the best publisher/producer (unsure of which really, I always pick wrong) of Sci-fi games back in the 90's up to the early 2000's and they were behind some pretty awesome games. One of my clear favorites along with Interplay.
Goddamn so many good memories from this game, i dont have it anymore, i lost it not so long ago, i remember playing this when i was 5, and when i was 16-17 (im 18now) this game was still going strong, i just used to have so much fun just killing as much cars as i could in wrecking racing xD who cares about graphics and quantity of content, along as what is in the game is good, it will hook people for life :D id still play it if i could, gta5 is boring now lol. good and simple, yet challenging. Ahhh i miss the old days when games were fun for hours upon hours on ps1 or like nintendo 64 nd stuff
It only gave you points for spinning your opponent or wrecking their car. The more degrees you spun them the more points you got. So smacking into the front end of them would get a good few points
There was a certain high-bank turn that the pack of cars took at high speed on this game where I would troll. Their traction was really poor through there. All they needed was a little nudge from someone lying in wait for the lead car. The lead car spin-out would cause a domino effect of carnage. Four laps of this - and the competition are all busted up, smokin'...THEN I'd race.
Ah great memories, still sometimes play this one. I always liked blocking off the small one car lane in Chalk Canyon, causing the pilup and race on ahead...where the cars would still be waiting and I would have to push through them :)
If you're looking for a modern version of a game like this then check out 'Wreckfest'! Its a new game by Bugbear who made the Flatout games, but it is focused on banger racing and destruction derby's!
Funny thing about Liberty City, is that Psygnosis published games by DMA Design, who made the first three Grand Theft Auto games before they were renamed as Rockstar North, so we juuuust might be talking about the same Liberty City.
This is in my top five favourite PSX games. I don't know how many hours of my life went to this when I was a teenager. Racing with no back wheels, life doesn't get any better.
Wow! Destruction Derby was awensome. Played it a lot on the mid '90s. Is still the pinnacle of the series. Thanks Sony for buy and destroy Psygnosis. One of the best developer of the time...
My favourite racing game for the PS1. Destruction Derby Arenas for the PS2 was up there as well. Shame that they didn't continue the series for the PS3.
Many good memories of the PC version, but this looks almost exactly the same which is good. And yes the music is great but why can I barely hear it in this version?
Destruction Derby 2 is still very "the heart" of the series! The menu music brings tears to my eyes nowadays. No other game really came close, RAW almost nailed it but something was not quite right about it. It felt close but something was missing though but I think the late Demolition Racing was the 'true' sucessor to DD2 even though it never used the name, it feels real close to DD2!! Long live the DD franchise and mid 90's gaming in general!!...
This actually seems faster than Motorstorm :P And I'm glad that the car doesn't stop for 5 minutes after being hit like it does on more recent games of this style. I hope DB RAW is even better.
I loved the demolition derby mode and it was the only mode I really played, lol. Though I recall that mode being better in the first game. Looking back, Destruction Derby was the precursor to the Burnout series.
As a child I always finished 19th or 20th. Much later in 2010 I pushed hard to beat the stock mode, and I did! Man, than needed lots of concentration, precision and caution. The game is hard, but still I love this game, despite I prefer games with easy option.
man I wish Reflections would get together and make one more DD, DD Raw and Arenas were so bad compared to DD1 and DD2. The instability and unpredictable nature of DD2 races is what made it the best. Even though you had the pit stop you felt compelled to bang up and push it until your radiator was on that super fast blinking. I hated though how your car fell apart with ease but opponents were basically indestructible. I wish you could've been other drivers and there were more tracks and seasons
Only thing that used to pee me off was the bad hit detection. I remember going full pelt into another car crashing head on and completely totalling the car, yet I wouldn't receive any points, if this was sorted out, and the graphics were re-amped. I would run out to buy it straight away!
One of my all time favourites, and Wipeout was awesome too which makes me hate that Sony killed off Psygnosis/Studio Liverpool. I've always wanted a remake of this game.
the AI in this game was brutal, you had the 7 or 8 cars that raced for first, the 3 or 4 stragglers, then about 5 cars that only mission was to set up traps along the course to mess you up I also wish if Reflections and Poly came back that they make the AI go after each other too and soften each other up during the races
People give him the game to see him do a review of it. Once he does the review he should be free to sell it if he chooses. I don't think he needs to do gimmik giveaways to artificially boost viewership. This is one of the most popular video game channels on youtube.
OMG this was the very first game i got with my Playstation in 1997! I played this to death! I could drift that yellow car (the pro car, the other two were intermediate and rookie) like a deranged Japanese reject from Tokyo Drift.
God this game was so much fun... I hope the new Flatout game "Wreckfest" will be so fun
I remember this game being really difficult. I don't know if I ever won a race. I usually always ended up playing destruction derby mode. Those were pretty difficult too and over quickly. We need something new like this.

should also be mentioned that this game has an AMAZING soundtrack (dat intro theme
Qirex2097 Oh hell yeah!
You are very right, the soundtrack is stompin awesome.

1:12 WTC Twin Towers?
All Access Gaming yes. They did exist
I still have my ps1 and this game. Got it for my birthday in 1998. The cover art work is awesome
Utterly love Destruction Derby 2, one of the few car games I actually do like. I had sooo much fun with Destruction Derby 2 when me and my friend rented it. i saw this review went back looked for all my ps1 games now 2 days later i am still playing non-stop the nostalgia thanks mark
Ive been playing this with the PS2 Speedster 3 Wheel lately and its absolutely epic! So many memories when i was a kid too!
Good times, hope they'll bring it back
Goddamn so many good memories from this game, i dont have it anymore, i lost it not so long ago, i remember playing this when i was 5, and when i was 16-17 (im 18now) this game was still going strong, i just used to have so much fun just killing as much cars as i could in wrecking racing xD who cares about graphics and quantity of content, along as what is in the game is good, it will hook people for life :D id still play it if i could, gta5 is boring now lol. good and simple, yet challenging. thats kinda survival mode
This game was always so tight on giving you points during wrecking races!
just drive backwards (with your rear damaging the ongoing cars) and points will come easily :)
It only gave you points for spinning your opponent or wrecking their car. The more degrees you spun them the more points you got. So smacking into the front end of them would get a good few points
There was a certain high-bank turn that the pack of cars took at high speed on this game where I would troll. Their traction was really poor through there. Yep we all did it
destruction derby 1 & 2 was my childhood. true classics.
Ah great memories, still sometimes play this one. I always liked blocking off the small one car lane in Chalk Canyon, causing the pilup and race on ahead...where the cars would still be waiting and I would have to push through them :)
At last reviewing my best loved game on the PlayStation1! Thanks Mark!
It is. Road redemption has been funded on kickstarter and is in currently in development.
Should remake dis bad boy 4 the ps4
You didn't mention the cool main menu music, it still gives me chills!
This game was friken amazin, i dont like racing games but this game was just utterly fantastic in every way. WAY ahead of its time
I remember being blown away by these graphics when I was 10 and got a PS1 for christmas, how far we have come
My first destruction derby game was destruction derby arenas for the ps2. So many memories!
ill never forget "MACrSPOO" lmaooo
You mean MACSrPOO ?
2021 and this cheat is as relevant as ever
If you're looking for a modern version of a game like this then check out 'Wreckfest'! Its a new game by Bugbear who made the Flatout games, but it is focused on banger racing and destruction derby's!
Brings me back, when I was a teen and my friends will come over to play this game.
I was 15 yrs old and I loved this game!!!
One of my favorite games on PS. Many memories of playing this game while listening to Reel Big Fish. Good times...
Funny thing about Liberty City, is that Psygnosis published games by DMA Design, who made the first three Grand Theft Auto games before they were renamed as Rockstar North, so we juuuust might be talking about the same Liberty City.
Wow I remember playing this like it was yesterday. Was a lot of fun back then.
This is in my top five favourite PSX games. I don't know how many hours of my life went to this when I was a teenager. Racing with no back wheels, life doesn't get any better.
@@quidgybo You seriously replied to a 10 year old comment?
This game was amazing at the time. So fast and smooth. And the car physics were nice. And the track designs. Pretty perfect really.
I played this demo so much that I wore the PC Gamer demo disc out completely.
As a fan of "Destruction Derby 3: Raw", I just picked this game at the mall, along with "Army Men: World War", and "Namco Museum Vol. 3"
Many good memories of the PC version, but this looks almost exactly the same which is good. And yes the music is great but why can I barely hear it in this version?
destruction derby 2 was so cool because it was fast and had lots of chaos in it just pure fun.. i remember playing the demo forever
Destruction Derby 2 is still very "the heart" of the series! The menu music brings tears to my eyes nowadays. No other game really came close, RAW almost nailed it but something was not quite right about it. It felt close but something was missing though but I think the late Demolition Racing was the 'true' sucessor to DD2 even though it never used the name, it feels real close to DD2!! one of the best, love the big bowl jumps
I remember renting a PlayStation console from Jumbo Video and this game lol. Was a lot of fun back in the day!
This is the version I grow up with. I use to play this non-stop with Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 and Jet Moto 3.
Loved this game when I had a PS1. LOVED IT. Memories...
This actually seems faster than Motorstorm :P And I'm glad that the car doesn't stop for 5 minutes after being hit like it does on more recent games of this style. I hope DB RAW is even better.
The fucking soundtrack kicks fucking ass the most 90s sounding music ever fucking radical fucking wicked
1:02 liberty city?
Grand Theft Auto?
Psygnosis is also well known for the great games they made for the Commodore Amiga like Shadow of the Beast, Obitus Baal and Killing Game Show.
oh man I remember playing this on my dad's PS1, it was pretty fun
I loved the demolition derby mode and it was the only mode I really played, lol. Though I recall that mode being better in the first game. Looking back, Destruction Derby was the precursor to the Burnout series.
I remember playing this game back on the PS1 but since the CD is broken, i played it on my PSP :P good old times
I still have this game and a very nice little feature they had where you can pop open the cd and put your own song as a background song lol
Demolition Derby was also an excellent one in a similar vein. You should review that one if you can get hold of a copy.
As a child I always finished 19th or 20th. Much later in 2010 I pushed hard to beat the stock mode, and I did! Man, than needed lots of concentration, precision and caution. The game is hard, but still I love this game, despite I prefer games with easy option.
I LOVED this back in the day :D
Such a rad game. I LOVED the first game and totally dug this one when it came out. Car carnage to the Max.
I loved this game, and I used to love how bright and colourful the disk was
Awesome game! Psygnosis did some great ps1 games back in the day! With games like this its no wonder the play station did so well!
I absolutely loved this game. I would drive in reverse on the course or stop in front of the jumps to see how big of a pileup i could cause.
Man Ioved this game, it seemed way ahead of it's time back then.
Correction: Destruction Derby was developed by Reflections, it was only published by Psygnosis
This game has such an awesome soundtrack! :)
This game was just awesome back in the day. It looks pretty dated now, but not as bad as some PS1 racers, and I bet its still quite fun.
Love this series, wish they did a new version of it X D
I remember this game fondly and I stilo have it. The music for it was awesome.
man I wish Reflections would get together and make one more DD, DD Raw and Arenas were so bad compared to DD1 and DD2.
You rock Mark Bussler! If I ever come to pittsburgh, we should drink a beer together!
My favourite all time driving game! I love Coluseum map
Ah DD2. Guilty pleasure at it's finest. Remember barreling down the straightaway trying to hit the ramp right to do the flip.
Only thing that used to pee me off was the bad hit detection. I remember going full pelt into another car crashing head on and completely totalling the car, yet I wouldn't receive any points, if this was sorted out, and the graphics were re-amped. I would run out to buy it straight away!
There’s actually a kickstarter for a new Roardrash, if I’m not mistaken. :)
"Total Carnage! I love it" Smash TV.
Good times, miss my childhood.
One of my all time favourites, and Wipeout was awesome too which makes me hate that Sony killed off Psygnosis/Studio Liverpool. I've always wanted a remake of this game.
Here in America too. My older brother had a lot of cool games from them.
Nice! Is the Negcon controller pretty good? I've never used one.
dave4shmups ,
It can be an acquired taste. There are wheel and pedal sets that will work here though.
the AI in this game was brutal, you had the 7 or 8 cars that raced for first, the 3 or 4 stragglers, then about 5 cars that only mission was to set up traps along the course to mess you up
I also wish if Reflections and Poly came back that they make the AI go after each other too and soften each other up during the races
Why is there no damage to the cars? Isn't this Destruction Derby? I remember the first one showed dents and smoke at least.
Oh the memories!
Oh, i spent so many hours with this game. Incredible fun! =D
Que buen juego loco!!!! Que buenas épocas... me alquilaba la play1 por 48hs, con 20 juegos y le daba rosca con mis amigos todo el fin de semana.
this is one of my fav games for PS1.
I spend the majority of my childhood in this game making my car into a roadblock and watching the forthcoming carnage.
When i was a small kid i always played only the stock car racing, but now i found that total destruction is much more enjoyable.. DD4 on PS4 anyone?
i miss this game SO MUCH
People give him the game to see him do a review of it. Once he does the review he should be free to sell it if he chooses.
I don't think he needs to do gimmik giveaways to artificially boost viewership. This is one of the most popular video game channels on youtube.
One of my favourite PS1 racing games alongside NFS III & IV :) They need to make a new destruction derby game!
you did a better job pronouncing it than i did when i was 10. i called it 'pig-nosis. and got a telling off from a friend for that.
after gran turismo 2 this is the most memorable game for me.
jet moto needs to come back too. jet moto 2, need for speed 2 and this game are some of my all time favorite racing games.
I wonder if he'll eventually review Thunder Truck Rally (PS1), also made by Psygnosis.
huge reviews dude
Used to play this game nonstop
I loved the first one. i was blown away by the way cars reacted to getting hit. DD2 was disappointing, I hated the over the top physics.
OMG this was the very first game i got with my Playstation in 1997! I played this to death! I could drift that yellow car (the pro car, the other two were intermediate and rookie) like a deranged Japanese reject from Tokyo Drift.
I just watched Caddicarus' review of this game not two days ago.
Watching the gameplay, the game seems really fun!
if they remade this game exactly as it is, same AI, physics, tracks everything just with shiny new graphics id buy it now.
I remember when I was 15years old and playing Destruction derby 1 and thinking that now the graphics could not get much better in games! :-)
I miss Psygnosis. They gave us some great games. :(
I remember that one track where there's a bottleneck at the start, just blocking the road causing massive mayhem :D There should be a DD on PS4.
