ABBA themselves apparently said “we love this as a single but the record company won’t!” This was the last song ever recorded by ABBA until their return to the studio in 2017. It was not from any album but included on a compilation. ABBA are so much more than the big hits. Great reaction guys.

This was the last song recorded by ABBA. Both couples were divorced and there was heavy dark vibes in the studio on this album. The sound engineer said Agnetha came in alone, turned the lights off and sang this alone and in the dark. He said when she finished it she hung up the headphones got up opened the door to the light and walked out saying nothing. He said he knew ABBA was over. One of their last TV promo's is them doing this on on "Show Express". Agnetha is brilliantly haunting in it. My favourite of her's. Benny Andersson does this song as he wrote it on his album "Piano" It's great too. The girl is singing about her meaningless life and an imaginary lover. But there is no lover and no happy ending to this one.

This song wasn't actually from a regular ABBA album. The Visitors, their last original studio album was released in December 1981. By May 1982 they began recording for a new album however they were all keen to do something new, so after completing six songs the new album was abandoned and four of the six songs recorded were released late in 1982. The Day Before You Came with Cassandra as its B-side, and the Under Attack with You Owe Me One as its B-side. The two A-sides were released on 'The Singles - The First 10 Years, the final compilation album of ABBA's 10 year period. The two B-sides have been released on CD and another of the six, 'I Am The City' was finally released on the 'More ABBA Gold' compilation. Just Like That, the 6th Song has only ever been released officially in part on the 1994 4 X CD Box Thank You For The Music medley. Usually 4 of these 1982 recordings were later added to the various editions of The Visitors as bonus tracks. The 2012 Deluxe edition features 5 of the 1982 song but omits 'Just Like That' which Bjorn and Benny have said will never be released in its original ABBA entireity.

This is hands down my favorite ABBA song, and I suppose you either love it or you hate it. I have been an ABBA fan since the beginning of their career (I am old enough to have all of their original 45s and albums still on vinyl), and for me this is one of their finest works. I must have listened to this song hundreds of times and always find something new to marvel over. Bjorn asked Agnetha to sing the part of an ordinary girl leading an ordinary life, creating a mood that gave her vocals a dullness not befitting of her amazing voice. The singer recounts the sameness of her daily routine, like clockwork, to a monotonous beat, using the rise and fall of the synths to create tension, anticipation, hope, melancholia, and maybe even regret. Maybe this is something many of us can relate to in these dark times. I doubt I connected emotionally with this song as much in 1982 as I do now. Thanks, guys, for giving this song a chance!

She's describing her usual, typical mundane day before someone special comes into her life, kinda describing how your life can suddenly change overnight. The video for this song is a masterpiece. I was surprised to learn that the haunting, wailing sound towards the end Is actually Frida's voice , I thought It was some kind of Instrument.

Lyrically at this point in their career ABBA lyrics were of a depth none of the music press of the time picked up on. This was the very last song they recorded. Agnetha was asked by Bjorn and Benny to sing the track like an everyday ordinary woman, recalling all the things she'd done 'the day before'. The operatic obilgato vocal was invented and sung by Frida. The songs original title was "Den Lidande Fågeln" (The Suffering Bird) and this song is minimalistic and perhaps a reminder that trivial things in life aren't important....but they are living. Most see it as a wonderful change of direction once a man arrived in her life but thats too simplistic for this time in ABBA's life. This song is darker than most. The fact that Meryl Streep performed the song as her dead character Donna on the Mamma Mia - Here We Go Again soundtrack album led to Bjorn stating it is sung after something bad happened to the protagonist.The Day Before it Came....wasn't really so dull.

This amazingly haunting song… their last recorded song (until Voyage, 40 years later)… is actually the exact opposite of a typical ABBA song! ABBA has a reputation for writing very sad lyrics, but putting them to catchy, and seemingly happy tunes. This song actually implies how wonderful her life has been, by contrasting it with her lonely, predictable existence before she met her love. The strange thing is that this song is stuck at the moment before she fell in love, and life changed. Most pop songs seem stuck at the moment just after falling in love. This feels odd and out of balance, but it is - typically of ABBA - very mature. These were two divorced couples raising children apart, at the end of their career as a touring band, musing about their adventures as two couples (and a band), wondering what life can still in store for them, and when you’re a father/mother approaching 40, can true love still just be around the corner? Or could it be looking back over a failed marriage, at all the good times and the bad, thinking that life was so dull before we met, that it was all worth it anyway, and feeling positive about life and having experienced the whole roller coaster ride of being together and sharing all those moments with someone you care about.
Only the sadness remains... That it has in common with the other great hits, don´t you think?
Someone in another thread tells a common interpretation of this song is that it´s about Death. They day before you - dear riper - came. The testimony of a recently passed away person. That´s food for thoughts. Live today!

Great song and I find it uplifting in that she lives each day in a compulsive routine. Unbeknownst to her, she is going to meet someone the next day who will change her life...for the better I believe.
My favorite ABBA song
This is the very last song they recorded. The band was pretty much sick of each other by this point. It was not on an album but added to The Visitors CD years later. A million miles from Mamma Mia.
I actually heard the Blancmange cover first and didn't realize till years later that it was an ABBA original.

This was one of the last - if not the last - Abba recorded. It's said by those present that the studio was uncomfortably quiet. It mirrored the general mood among the four at the time. It also of course leaned heavily the Scandinavian sense of melancholy.

I love this song. The melody alone is absolutely beautiful. The structure of the song is different with no actual chorus. The plain lyrics are brilliant. The haunting operatic voice in the background is Frida. Benny plaid the synths and that`s about it. Gorgeous.

Last thing they ever recorded in August 1982. (Until the as yet unreleased new songs!) Apart from a snare drum overdub, there’s no other musicians. It’s all Benny on synth and Linn drum machine. Sadly only reaching number 32 in UK charts. A favourite amongst fans though.
I remember George Michael saying how he was so shocked it didn’t reach No’1. It is such a sad song.

To me, the main character is extremely happy right now, but the song itself is her remembering (in a very melancholic way) the empty and meaningless day-after-day life she had before she met her true soulmate and love, who gave her back a meaningful life. After the last lines of the song, she will undoubtedly fall asleep again, wake up again, have her breakfast again, take the train again and then... meet The Love Of Her Life. The official video of this song shows us that meeting actually.

It was included on the LP as well. (Why are Brits/Americans so obsessed with singles? I really don't get it. In my country, that format was never really popular, at least not after the late 1950s.)

This one is one of my all time favourites. It doesn’t have a real chorus but like in the chansons of the french singer Charles Aznavour it spirals into the one line that works as a sort of culminating point instead of a chorus. The operatic voice is Frida by the way. Everyone is doing background vocals. It’s actually complex! And Björn’s lyric is amazing. He’d come a long way from the beginnings...
Another good choice would be Hole In Your Soul as it surprises some people, especially the live version.

I first heard The Day Before You Came on Top Of The Pops when I was in Huntingdon, UK in November 1982. Then after that came Under Attack. I didn't realize it, but I was seeing ABBA's end. At the same time I won an autographed ABBA The Singles: The First Ten Years album from a radio station in London. And I came back home to southern Alberta in Canada.

It’s a strange song, but brilliant, my favourite song of theirs. It’s clever because it has a very melancholy tune, but the words infer a big and perhaps better day from tomorrow. We are hearing about today, which is the day before you came.
It's a misleadingly dark song. She describes her mundane daily life ... BEFORE the day he came. It implies that when she met him (on the next day), he rescued her from that mundane life. So it's actually a very uplifting song: He saved her.
I don't think so. I think she committed suicide or was killed by the man in the video.

The lighting looks great. I always felt a bit sad with this Abba song as it was one of their last singles to be released... a great song though. If you get the chance try and listen to "Get On The Carousel" from their Australian tour, it really rocks. Sadly it was never released on an album.

What a song!!!
I'm gonna recommend a strange track. "The Friends of Mr Cairo" by John and Vangelis from the album of the same name. Its 12 minutes long, is a love letter to classic movies and has one of the most haunting melodies near the end. Jon Anderson has an amazing voice and Vangelis is an amazing pianist and composer.
Hauntin melancholic. It keeps building throughout the song, yet somehow never arrives.
This is probably a murder investigation they are investigate the woman's time before she was murdered.
You should also listen to "I am The City"
ABBA recorded that song in 1982 but it was not released until 1993 on the compilation album "More ABBA Gold"

I agree, I don't think its a murder investigation as such, Ive always felt, and Bjorn has now conceeded that this is written lyrically from the persective of a victim who has died.

I found funny how people trying to explaining and misunderstanding this consequently. This song not made to the pop world level of interpretations, even it's a pop song, but far more complex and touching even the metaphisical levels....
I call this song Abba's Requiem, because Benny Anderson addiction with Mozart is obvious (just hear how "As Good as New" starting), but here he going more further, with it's dark harmonies in the middle and especially in the final parts of the song - these harmonies are concrete reminisences to Mozart's Requiem Confutatis title closing chords!
And about the lyrics. The videoclip totally misinterpreting the meaning of the song! I see some intention behind, maybe they thought the original meaning absolutely out of the image, what people thought about ABBA, and they just created this clip to masking this fact....The concrete lyrics doesn't talking about any kind of relationship. It's about a full day of a lonely person, with routin like strict schedule. The big question is - inside this empty, repetiting life, who will make the change, who is this "You" who will came on the next day, changing everything, breaking all the routine? This has no answer in the lyrics, but on the final chords overhears from Mozart masterwork giving a proper answer....Mozart Requiem's last two title is Confutatis and Lacrymosa, where the souls, leaving their earthly life asking forgivness from God, just before they meet with Him.
If we enriching this meaning from a single person to the world, we can found the metaphisic level of the song - very much not fitting with pop expectations... Some home made videoclips was able to catching this level of the song, and it's obvious, that if you just hearing, something not okay with that - impossible properly interpret anything from the song first time... Because this "You" who "came" on the next day it's not just a new lover or something very banal thing, but something much deeper. This is why the detailful story telling of a very boring, routine day. On the shadow or hope of the next day all these boring routine revalued as it is - a valueless lonely life. But "Sorry but I cannot living without aim"....
The "turning off the light" symbolizing the end of the ABBA project once and for all... Two marriage finished with break, no way to continue without harmony, without faith...(They needed 40 years to find their faith again - I have a faith in you - in each other, after 40 years of indemnity).... This song is something what very rare in the world of non-classical music - a song with very complex meaning and very unique sounding..... Not something you just hear and could interpret as it is, you need time, self-reflection and knowledge....

I think this song was one of their best.
Someone else may already have pointed this out… the rhythm-line (drums and bass synth) is 100% monotonous, like the sound of rain on a roof. The lyrics mention rain twice, but once you think of the percussion representing neverending rain, it adds a much sadder and darker feel.
And yet - the lyrics are about what life was like the day *before* a new person (presumably a partner) came into her life. So, that turns the song around and makes it into this memory of unconscious desperation.
And did you notice that there’s no chorus?
I’m convinced that it was written to be so long as a way of drawing the listener into the darkness of the day before you came. (See what I did there?)

@@MariaCarabin I vaguely remember NME saying that at some point. I think that the list was of best pop songs of all time rather than best records in music history. Still a huge (and well-deserved) honor for this masterpiece.
Seriously, this song is just incredible, and arguably the darkest song Abba ever wrote and performed. Björn has hinted at the "you" in this song being not a new lover, but Death itself, and the gloomy finality of both the music itself and the accompanying music video would seem to support that bleak interpretation.

It was one of the last three that barely entered the Top 30 in the UK, a low expectation for what ABBA was used to.
It is said to have been recorded in a dark and damp room, to make it more gloomy and to help Agnetha interpret
I will be honest
of all his singles (I think there are 26) this is the one I like the least
Agnetha's vocal performance is the best, but she is very lonely without a chorus and with little musical body
I understand that many like it,

Also it is even well ranked in the votes for the best ABBA song
I also know that it is part of the research and experimentation musical of the last years of ABBA
But this song is not the style of music that I like and Agnetha remains as a soloist
That is why I prefer his other songs, where the four most involved are, in addition to other musical genres
ABBA was so versatility group, have made songs of all differents styles and kind of músic

It is a a synth-driven story very cleverly done. Artistically; if illusionist-like is the right word, maybe:
Indeed, no real chorus and I read somewhere that Agnetha came up with the idea to use the singing technique of Charles Aznavour; making a melody of the lyrics and deliberately melodifying the song further. A great trick! Further on - The backing vocals...(Frida, Björn and Agnetha after the first part?) Non-intruding, so the song is still minimalistic, but not over-produced.
The obligato was Frida’s idea, which added further to the peripety.
The video further adds confusion to the story, blending the cheesy train flirtation in the first ,happy part of the song with the skepticism of both protagonists, shown through imagery; in the subsequent scenes (the flirtation was fine and maybe innocent, but they look troubled in subsequent scenes. Maybe a flirt gone too far wrecking both the woman’s and man’s marriage respectively?) The woman looks back twice; once on the train and once at the car park, looking back when he does, understanding she needs to face her life and value it before him and after.
I like the “techno-beat” reference you make in your video. And it was a bold move to make a perfect pop song at 5.52-mark out of it... (no Eurovision Song Contest constrains of 3 minutes maximum imposed here, though)
As Abba were perfectionists (correction; are; they still work on their project with the ABBAtars), this was not their most well engineered song acoustically or technically, and as a listener, while only trying to find the faults based on that, the sound picture maybe could have been more spacious. The obligato, the backing vocals and the warm analogue synthesizers could maybe have been fuller and not so compressed.
(While still pioneers in going all-digital in their recording in the later part of 1981, digital classical sound recordings with a very full and rich sound exist from the mid 70’s and should by this time have matured)

Wow! You guys seemed a bit taken aback by this track. Not the usual “up” ABBA tracks. And BTW, this track was not on one of the regular studio released albums. It was supposed to be included on the next ABBA album after “The Visitors” which never came to pass since they went on a so called “break”. It ended up being included on “The Singles: The First Ten Years”.
Focusing on whether the song had an "up beat" or not, completely misses the point of this song. The "story telling" was where this song excelled. The melody was VERY simple. But again it was the lyrics that were the main emphasis. This song has had many interpretations. Everything from death and murder to finding your soul mate. The video for this song gives more of a hint as to what this song means. But the story of the lyrics and the haunting background vocals stand out, even after 40 years. Thanks for your reactions. They are thought provoking.

@@Traivlin The "song" without the video gives me the impression that the singer's life changed for the better when a new person entered her life. Even with the melancholy music, the lyrics sound as if her life was improved with this new person. The video is another matter all together. That new person she is singing about is shown leaving. She seems to be lamenting that loss.

This song marks more or less the end of Abba. As already mentioned by somebody else in the comments, this song was far from a hit (#32 in UK) and Abba lost their grip on the charts. It was cynical that a cover of the song a few years later was more successful than the original in the UK. Abba's British record label Epic lost interest in them because it also had Michael Jackson signed and we all know how succesfull Thriller became. Nevertheless over the years "The day before you came" became a favourite of Abba fans and especially in the UK (www.theguardian.com/music/2018/jun/29/all-abbas-uk-singles-ranked). Also mentioned by somebody in the comments is the pianoversion of Benny on his album Piano (2017). You really should listen to that one also. PS: I like those lights

Pretty poor interpretation of the masterpiece
Low tier ABBA. Should never have been released. Too many syllables, the phrasing doesn't fall into the rhythm naturally and the accent makes it sound very awkward. 2/10.
Yes! Hardcore ABBA fans ove it but general public/casual fans hate it.
Don't get me wrong I love many of their mature songs eg Knowing Me, Knowing You, The Name of the Game and The Winner Takes it All but this is monotone and BORING!
@@johnnyb6584 Benny Andersson recorded an instrumental version of the song on piano that is about 200 times better than this. It truly brings out the melancholy of the song and makes if feel GENUINE. @@johnnyb6584 I've noticed that casual fans (generation that grew up on 80s synth pop music) and contemporary music critics embraced this song. And actually some hardcore ABBA fans dislike it. And there are some hardcore ABBA fans that find Visitors album rather tired effort (bc it's too simplistic in terms of melodies, too dark, too reliant on synth).
i think phrasing falls very well, as intended. beat might be too harsh, too cold and it produces monotony (as any drum machine). and accent is okay bc it is about some woman who might have accent. And some other ABBA songs have slight accent anyway. It might've been better with more organic arrangement. But definitely not 2/10 for me.
That's not true. This came second in a national poll a few years back.
