Hey James! Normally i don't comment on youtube tutorials, but i found this one very refreshing! I agree that most video's just teach a bass line without explaining the melodic background. If you understand how the song progresses, it's much easier to remember and improvise. Thanks!

Hey James. After 53 years of elec bass playing, I just love to go on your tutorials and listen to you describe brilliantly how to learn songs and then play them really well. I am trying to teach my 7 year old grandson but I will be connecting him up to your site v. soon. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Good tutorial, it made me realise that is exactly what I was doing back in the Sixties, learning new songs for the band. I just hadn't looked at it that way. If I had, I might have called it the "Eight Miles High" view - a little higher than 40,000ft, but then we all were in those innocent days.

As always awesome and AXEsone so compliment "sorted" here is some specific bonus feedback...
    1) yes the sequence is where I need to start and that was a point you made .... I am not a gifted musician and the other day I was trying to learn the track with a friend for an open stage and it was a number I didn't know and she was wanting me to get into the bleeding groove and suggested playing specific transition notes when moving between chords and it was very irritating because that is so obvious but if I don't know the structure I can't do any of that so it is a point well made.
I had already said to her that I would just play the root notes on the first beat to start with aaaarrrrgggghhhh
    2) it does Indeed use the chords of a 12 bar but it is indeed not in a 12 bar blues. That is a different kettle of riffs 🤔
    3) yes the Roman numbers is an important to follow on for transposition
4 ) things that would be very interesting for me if you have time to reply is that on balance with my limited skills and almost no knowledge I concentrate on the root notes etc and I'm currently trying to learn about minor scales and what what passing notes I might use when I move from an C7 to F7 rather than Cm to Fm (that was a random example) but in this song the chords don't seem to be all minor and some include a seventh so the last 4 bars are shown as Dm7 A7 Dm Dm.
So with the eight miles high (Byrds) approach I can ignore that in thus songs and play the specific riff but in a track that didn't have a repeated specific riff would you say that I would need to take account of majors, minors and sevenths?
Once I have my son settled in for his ominous baccalaureate year I'll cough up the ££££ sterling as you well deserved payment for your "sterling" work.

      To get from a c7 to F7
Try a chromatic run of C D Eb E F… let me know how you get on!

Liked a lot. I don't often listen to the end, but this was full of interesting good ideas linked together, like a good novel that draws you in. Anyway, I liked best that James slowed down and actually told the count and named the note for the riff. I can figure it out but was doubly impressed and happy to see someone taking the time and giving out the info. Kudos and thanks. I will be back. Smiles

My binder of songs for my jazz combo is nothing but chord progressions. I use iReal Pro to generate them. Super easy to transpose in that form. I also use it to practice with as iReal Pro will play drums and a piano comp line that I can play along with.

Hey James, you were sayin in this video that often bass players jump right into the tab online without understanding the basics first. This is what happens to me, i too jump into the tab sometimes before even listening. I was wondering if there is a program or a system that helps me to understand the basic notes in songs?

@@ebassguitar Funny thing is my number one complaint is nobody ever describes the basic chord structure of the song before trying to teach it to me. The tabs are all nice but I don't know how anyone can memorize or understand a song without working out what chords they are playing first.

Please don't get me wrong. I'm not judging your physical appearance or crashing on you (I'm not gay at all). I just can't help myself not starring at your eyebrows cuz they're so thick and strong to me.

I found it all a bit strange. Some aspects clear and some could be confusing for less advanced players. When playing the riff without backing track was very shabby, clumsy and out of time.
