- Patricia McKay, 68, was walking with her husband when two thieves accosted them with a handgun outside the mall’s Barnes and Noble bookstore at about 3:30 p.m., according to the Newport Beach Police Department.

I live in the IE, people who live in Moreno Valley, their relatives and friends would come out to visit, they would look around and think this area looks soft, it will be easy to rob and steal here. It happened so much Moreno Valley was getting a really bad name. They would commit the crime and try to high tail it back to Los Angles, they would always get caught, this area is a hang em high town, 30 + years in prison easy. This was all pre COVID

I haven't been there in a decade, but it was a clean & safe place, that was also 'dog friendly'.

My condolences to the family and friends of these people and I offer a sincere apology to New Zealand, I currently live in Los Angeles. I'm embarrassed at the level of lawlessness in California right now. Fashion Island is the last place something like this could happen, I worked at Kohl Center Newport and it felt like crime was on another planet.
The three suspects are Jaden Cunningham, 18 of Lancaster, Malachi Eddward Darnell, 18 of Los Angeles, and Leroyernest Joseph McCrary, 26 of Compton, have been charged. I am sure their parents are so proud for what criminals did to that woman.
Nothing to see here folks just an elderly Woman visiting from 6,916 miles away lost her life in this super safe city and if you doubt how safe it is just listen to Steve Oberon tell you how safe it is there twice.

Tourists always say to me "California isnt what i thought it was going to be like" in disappointment
I remember showing my best friend and his wife around L.A. a long time ago. She wanted to see the "walk of fame" and didn't believe me when I told her that we had arrived. I finally pointed out the stars on the sidewalk to her and she gave me that disappointed face, like she had just learned that Santa wasn't real.
Yeah I also expected Cali to be THE PLACE to be, but its rather full of superficial people and it is not really great to travel without a car. You would expect some great public transportation in such a well travelled area of the world. Also, the rent prices seem out of norm. The only thing that was amazing was the food and the nature. But it didnt really feel safe as a woman.
So sad

Newport Beach is itself safe but these three young black men who ran this woman over and killed her came from LA. Very tragic, thankfully no one else was hurt as they started shooting at people after they ran her over.

When I lived in N.B. in the 90's we had trouble with the citizens of the Santa Ana area visiting the city and breaking into garages and vehicle's.

State and local police officers now are prohibited from inquiring about an individual’s immigration status during the routine course of their work.
State and local officers are forbidden from holding illegal immigrants until they can be transferred into federal custody.
Federal agencies are prohibited from commandeering local authorities to work with immigration agencies and perform the work of immigration agents.
