    This is a Bermuda lawn. Bermuda is a warm climate grass and it loves to be cut short. Many people would love to have a golf course lawn but they simply don’t have the right type of grass to achieve it. And you are right about the mower, a reel mower just gives a superior cut. With Bermuda cut low and cut often.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Definitely Todd/Jill. The mower is 80% of the results. The more often you mow, the better your lawn will look. Even if someone doesn't have Bermuda they can still have an amazing-looking lawn. I've seen some Fescue lawns that are absolutely gorgeous. Which type of grass do you have?

    • @toddfoster975
      @toddfoster975 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ron Henry Im here in AZ and also have Bermuda. This is my third season. Never had it before. I love it. First two seasons I mowed it taller (1.5-2”) and once a week like I would a fescue or a KBG. It did well, but this season I’m mowing short (

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very cool Todd. Bermuda really thrives when mowed short. It’s just more of a time commitment. What you should also find is there will be less issue with weeds at lower mowing heights. Bermuda thrives at mowing heights that most weeds can’t tolerate.
      It might be good to look into plant growth regulators; assuming you haven’t already. They allow you to mow less frequently and also help the lawn produce an even deeper green. If you’re interested, I have a playlist showing the results of PGR: th-cam.com/video/FP_pEpfILJY/w-d-xo.html

      Never cut low! You cut high and often to prevent the grass from drying out! And preventing weeds from growing!!

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appreciate it Douglas. Depends on what you mean by low. Cutting at 1 inch is doable but keep in mind the lower you go, the more frequently you'll have to mow it to keep the lawn looking nice. Figure twice per week/

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It can definitely be done. How established is your lawn? Is it still at the point where the sod looks like a jigsaw puzzle or has it full grown in? Depending on how serious you want to get with the project, you might want to consider top dressing and then over seeding on top of that.

Can you send me pictures so that I can see what you’re dealing with? ron@ron-henry.com Lookikg forward to seeing your project. Hi Charlene. You can still apply Caravan G now to your lawn. Proscape and/or Milorganite are great fertilizer that will help feed you turf. If you're still able to apply fertilizers this time of year, then either would be a great option. Have you recently had a soil test done? That would be helpful towards determining if there are any major issues going on with the soil that need to be corrected. Healthy soil greatly improves your chances of growing a great lawn. The soil test I've had good success with is from MySoil: www.mysoiltesting.com/shop?aff=11 Let me know if I can help with anything else. 👍😎

      Ron Henry ...I would not recommend any different products than what you are using. I did however try a new fertilizer this spring. Pro Peat/17-0-4 purchased it at Yardmastery. Goal is still the same, correct lbs of nitrogen per 1000sqft. I’m also trying to maintain correct amount of potassium in soil.
      Only reason I tried new fertilizer is ammoniacal nitrate versus urea. if I understand it correctly Ammoniacal nitrate is already in a state where grass roots can use it, Urea has to be changed into usable nitrogen but it won’t happen unless soil temperature is right.
      Your lawn is perfect though, stick with what works.

    Do you have a chart that shows when you apply all of these products (not just the ones in this video)? There is a lot of great information here but a little overwhelming. For instance...It is the beginning of June is SC. We just leveled our lawn and I would like to know what steps I take next. Arden 15 is ordered and I'm getting ready to over seed within a week. Do I apply all of these products first? Do I wait until the over seed had germinated? How soon can you apply all products? Back to back or wait a week in between. I'm new to Bermuda grass so I need so basic sequence application information. TIA

      Also how often do you apply?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question Ashley. I'll work on putting together a chart and video that covers the application schedule in detail. You can apply Caravan G and your fertilizer of choice now. Those 2 products could be applied on the same day if you want. Because you are planning to overseed, the only thing I wouldn't apply to the lawn is any kind of herbicide. To feed the new seed, a starter fertilizer like this one from Scotts is a good choice: amzn.to/2YhNe3Y You can use Milo but it's a much slower release. To summarize:
      1. Apply Caravan G insecticide / fungicide if you haven't as yet.
      2. Apply fertilizer of choice. Either starter fertlizer at full rate or half rate along with Milorganite.
      3. Overseed lawn and don't let the turf dry out. For my method of overseeding see: th-cam.com/video/ty4lc178cCI/w-d-xo.html
      That should put you in a good position to be successful with your overseeding project. The big thing is to keep herbicides (especially pre-emergent) off the turf until the Arden 15 is established. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Good luck on your project! Should be a fun time. 😎👍

      Can you get Proscape in your area? If so, I'd put that down since it's an excellent fertilizer that will do wonders for your turf over a 6 - 8 week period. You can also do Milorganite to get a deeper green without pushing too much growth.
      This season I put down Proscape about 6 weeks ago and and Milo 2 weeks ago. I'll do an application of Milorganite monthly between now and August. The iron in Milo is what produces that really deep green. Because it's slow release, there's no issue with doing a light application monthly other than cost. Hope this helps.

      I put down Proscape and then a couple weeks later I put down Milo. They release at much different rates so if you space them out by a week or 2, you'll be fine. I put Milo down monthly once the growing season really hits. Proscape is every 8 - 10 weeks depending on how the turf is looking. The big benefit of Milo is how slow it releases and the iron it puts into the lawn that produces that super deep green. Let me know if I can answer anything else. 😎

    May I ask how often do you apply fertilizer and do you apply in the hot months like Jul/Aug? Each time you fertilize do you use Milo and ProScape?
    Background:
    I recently joined your channel so late to the dance. I also just purchased a Toro GM1000 which I used to scalp at .50" but then I had issues with the mower. I have been maintaining at 1" with my rotary for almost a month. Reel mower is back and I will need to re-scalp and plan to maintain at .75". Since the lawn is only 3 years old and my soil test results call for a balanced fertilizer which I use (13-13-13). Hope this isn't TMI :)

    • @RonHenry

      I fertilize pretty much monthly. I just don’t apply it at full strength during the summer. I’ve found that a regular light feeding does better than full rate every 6 - 8 weeks.
      Keep in mind that even though the nitrogen might last that long, the micronutrients like iron, won’t.

    • @RonHenry

      It is a tad late in the season to be top dressing. It really depends on how hot it still is there though. Bermuda loves heat.
      If anything it will just take a bit longer to come back. It’s not like you’ll kill it. If you go forward with the top dressing, I would get a ship broom to massage the sand in. You want the blades of grass sticking through to help the lawn recover faster.

      It's not banned as far as I know. I bought some at the end of last season. If you can still get it, I would go with it. Milorganite works too but you'll need to use much more of it.

      It can be. I tend to mow at an angle instead of straight up and down. The striping comes out better that way and it's also less likely to scalp.

      @@mr.greenthumb4293 I fill the sprayer with water and also add 2 - 3 ounces of liquid fertilizer to give the lawn a little kick. 2 - 3 ounces is half of the normal rate for the liquid fert. This product is the equivalent of what I use: amzn.to/2WRaPrI

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. It's probably more like a golf course fairway. To get it to putting green status would take a greater time commitment. It would need a few more rounds of top dressing and I would have to get a different mower. The Tru-cut is a great reel mower, but it's not a greens mower. Would have to go with something from Toro.
