Honestly, feeders have always been kind of intimidating for me, especially when you're meant to rotate them! But this broke-it down and made it sooo much more accessible, I didn't realize they were so easy to keep.

@@sylviahorizon4663 at the time, not so much... he requires surgery now, but endured 9 years of side effects due to a missed hiatal hernia of his diaphragm (literally 1/3 of his stomach is up through it, surgery is soon) and a undiagnosed broken back (he'd had a back injury previously, the break was assumed to be a worsening of the first) which unfortunately healed improperly and would be very dangerous to fix now. He's highly adaptive as I said before though, and has learned to live with it. I just wanted to add a few comments about keeping a dubia roach colony that weren't mentioned in the video.
    1. If you're starting a colony from scratch, keep in mind that it can take as long as 6 months for the roaches to reach adulthood. You can order adults online if you want to get your colony going faster. You can tell when they have reached adulthood when they take on a shiny, lacquered appearance (you can see an adult male and female at 17:25 in the video, the males are long-bodied with fully formed wings and the females are much more rounded with wing stubs).
    2. Once the roaches reach adulthood, they can live for as long as 2 years, so you'll have a lot of time for them to breed repeatedly.
    3. Even though the adult males have fully formed wings, they can't fly. They can use the wings for a controlled glide from a high place, but you don't have to worry about them flying out of their colony box.
    4. Try to keep your male to female ratio at about 1 male to every 3-4 females. If you have too many males, they can sometimes start to cannibalize the baby roaches. Unfortunately there isn't really a good way of discerning males from females until they are fully matured.
    5. You may want to put some cardboard egg crates into the colony box to give the roaches a place to hide. They will be a lot less stressed if they have someplace where they can feel hidden and secure. Using an opaque container or wrapping your colony container in paper to make it a bit darker will help with this too.
    6. If you listen really closely, you can hear the roaches quietly squeaking to each other. :-)

They take awhile to reproduce and I have more issues with the males escaping than I did with dubia, but I have sensitivities to roaches and the red runners affect it a lot less than the dubia do. That and most of my animals are more red runner sized than dubia sized, not counting my beardie or my new leachie who hates bugs anyway.
My dubia also had mites on them which wasn't fun. My red runners have book lice living with them but they are good cleanup crew along with the buffalo beetles. The runners finally had some ootheca hatch though so I'm waiting for those to grow up now.
