What an AMAZING tutorial! Really, really beautiful man! You taught me so much in such a short length of time! Truly a masterclass in TH-cam instruction. No BS, no fluff - just great tips! I'd love to learn anything and everything from you!
i thought i was pretty savvy with imovie already. you surprised me with a couple things. now i'm gonna have to watch more of your videos. great job. you just earned my subscription
Is it me or is it Apple? I spend a significant amount of time figuring out how to disconnect audio from Video ... you are the first one to mention the "Music Layer" below my other audio. THANK YOU!
Tried to find out why when I did a VoiceOver on my video, the music track was lowered... I have to start with you first when I search for an answer... wow bro... much appreciated... ❤🙏
Thank you so much! I’ve learned bunch of this on my ownjust by experimenting but some tips here are really golden nuggets! Thank you for doing it! Gonna watch more!
I’ve been working with iMovie for 5 years and my Biggest pain is the audio on my show. I’m loud. My cohosts are not. Using Auto May save me a lot of time. Thank you!
This video was very helpful in learning iMovie. I learned a lot! I just wish you could have slowed down a little bit. I had to stop and replay some parts to get everything.
I’ve struggled getting a consistent audio level in projects with 20+ clips, but your ‘copy’ & ‘paste’ adjustments might be what I’m looking for. The volume slider for audio seems to be a relative adjustment instead of an absolute +db or -db level, and with only the slider changing in increments (114%, 123%, 154%…) it’s challenging to get a consistent level from clip to clip. I guess I need to graduate to Final Cut or DaVinci Resolve to get more pro level control of audio mixing. And advice?
Great advice you have taught me some new things! I was just curious if there is a way to set volume for different loudness clips and all be the same. Some of my clips I am right near the camera and others I am stepped away..
Very helpful. I've been looking for a tool within imovie to remove echo, so it's interesting that while there's an effect to ADD echo, there's none to remove it from what I can see?
Thanks for the tips! Is there a way to just have an axle equalizer to edit music on these videos? I know my older version of iMovie did it and I just can't believe that such a simple function isn't included, thanks!
Gary is there an easy way to make the audio track mono so it won’t come out in just one channel (when recorded USB in QuickTime for example) on playback? Thx, your channel is spectacular!
@@macmost Thanks Gary! I actually figured out a way to do it with handbrake. Of the various options I studied, it’s the easiest. But you’re right, there’s no easy way! And there really should be… hey keep up the great work, we so appreciate your expertise!
Hi.. Thanks for the great video. Do you have any video on adjusting length of the audio (making it lengthier to be specific) based on video clips size? I'm struggling with it since long..
Not sure what you mean. If audio is X seconds in length, you can't make it longer ... how? By adding more? Not sure what you are trying to do here. For instance if it is a conversation, how does that get longer? Or, if it is music, how do you add more? I suppose if it is music you can add the song a second time.
@@macmost ok.. thanks for your response.. I was thinking if there is a possibility to loop the audio multiple times.. but from you reply I presume that is not possible in imovie!?
Hi. Great info. Please I am just learning in iMovie. I have a problem. One piece of film. Have added a sound effect from Epidemic but, audio is not long enough for clip of film. So I have copied it 3 times 1 after the other. But, there is a second of silence each time Q how do I get rid of the silence Please. Thanks.
I don't think I've done something like this with Final Cut, at least not recently. I mostly stick to iMovie tutorials as many more people use iMovie and Final Cut is more for pros.
hi I have a question how I can record my video and audio with my Yamaha audio system cause I tried and the sound sounds deferent from garage band with echo from the room, thanks in advance
I sure hope you see this comment since it’s been a while since the video was posted. I have been editing my videos on my iPhone for the past 2 months and I just recently got a MacBook Air. Now I’m learning all over again how to use iMovie bc the computer version is way more intricate. When I add music from the iMovie library on my phone the song covers the entire length of my videos. Which is what I want. However when I add the background music on the computer the song stops when it’s over and doesn’t replay over until the video is over. Do I have to re add the song multiple times until the video is over or how to I get it to replay for the entire length of the video? PLEASE HELP!
Great. Thanks. But one of the STUPIDEST things about iMovie is you can't use it for movies made in QuickTime. Both Apple specific, and iPhone vids are by default QT. So, I have a suite of video editing software, made by Apple, that won't edit video shot on an Apple product. You got a workaround for that?
I'm able to edit videos made on the iPhone. Just drag and drop into iMovie. So I'm not sure what you mean. QuickTime isn't a single format but a file type that can encompass so many different formats and compression types.
How do you place an audio track into the background? My video clips are detached from audio clips but the music track is now somehow attached to the video clips.
Is there any gig that I can do to render better AUDIO QUALITY for my videos on IMOVIE? I have a great piece of music in my videos but then when I EXPORT THE FILE the audio reduce its quality, how can I fix it? Thanks!
I am trying to figure out how to have audio that moves from right to left ear in headphones. I hear it on other videos and I'm really interested in doing the same with my videos (e.g., for meditation videos).
I don't think you can do that in just iMovie. But you can learn GarageBand (also free from Apple) and there is a function in GB where you can edit the soundtrack of a movie. You can definitely do it there. th-cam.com/video/yAxMlfq3qAg/w-d-xo.html
Do you have a video that addresses converting MONO to STEREO? Like when you bring in a video from a camcorder an it is only recorded on one channel and you want to at least duplicate that one channel and have sort of stereo. For example a left and right channel that are both from original right channel?
There's no way to do that in iMovie. You may have to edit the audio in another app or maybe process the video in GarageBand afterwards. Both will take some new skills and a lot of extra work.
@@macmost thanks for the response. I love watching your videos I was able to come up with a solution. I finished doing all my video edits and everything in Mono and then I exported audio only and took that into audacity and duplicated it and then made it a stereo file and then exported that and pasted it into iMovie and took the sound down on the original mono clip and it worked great thanks for your response?
Is that because your original video only has audio on the right channel? If so, what you'd need to do is to convert the audio to mono. Can't be done in iMovie, but you could bring the video into GarageBand after exporting and work with the audio there.
You can't do that in iMovie. You'll need to edit the video in GarageBand when it is done (and it will take some GarageBand skills) or use another video editing app that have more audio control.
Absolutely the best audio tutorial I’ve seen so far! Very cool tips and easy to follow. Thank you!

Completely different things. Adding echo is simple. Removing it is extremely difficult or impossible.
THX mate, very good tips and trics!
Great information as always, thanks Gary
I've just started trying to create yoga videos & this was super helpful - my voiceover audio quality was not ideal

Quick question so for the audio volume effect do you ever go pass 100% or is 100 % just right for good quality music for TH-cam ?
Not sure what you mean. What is "just right" is up to you.

Not sure. The quality should be fine when you export from iMovie. Not sure what could be wrong in your case.
Good one Gary
I've never seen that trick of dragging a video clip down to convert it to audio automatically! That is quite a timesaver over detaching.
I am trying to figure out how to have audio that moves from right to left ear in headphones. I hear it on other videos and I'm really interested in doing the same with my videos (e.g., for meditation videos).

Dense Concise Useful Information
excellent!
Explain how one can lower, let say a two second piece of the audio in order to add in another audio clip for the same two seconds.
Just add the other audio as a new track. Then use automation curves to lower the volume of the first track as I show.
I have audio only on the left channel. How to I duplicate it to the right channel?
Is that because your original video only has audio on the right channel? If so, what you'd need to do is to convert the audio to mono. Can't be done in iMovie, but you could bring the video into GarageBand after exporting and work with the audio there.
how we can separate left and right stereo channels of a video?
You can't do that in iMovie. You'll need to edit the video in GarageBand when it is done (and it will take some GarageBand skills) or use another video editing app that have more audio control.
