    That's the thing with the 75 you have to be an enthusiast to own one .I've spent far more on mine than I'll ever get back but that's fine with me because I love my car it's a 75 with the 2.5 engine .so if your not happy it's best to let it go to an enthusiast who will look after it

    Every time I see you out in TWC it cheers me up. Its useful, serviceable, cute and to me a great example of recycling.

    I will never understand why folks who are normally somewhat intelligent insist on revving the hell out of a cold engine, then wonder why they break or have problems later...sigh. Very HubNut.

    This channel is incredibly educational. Recently I have learned:
    How to replace the alternator on a Rover 75
    How to check the brakes on a Dahatsu Charade
    How to stop a tramoline flying away
    I also learned the best way to peel a tangerine but that was on another channel.

    Glad you had TWC out again for a post office run! Puts me in mind of my childhood days, the U.S. Postal Service used Cushman 3-wheel buggies for mail delivery--probably about the same power as TWC, and a similar rear-drive layout. Also in Seattle for years there was a roving ice cream/popsicle service, which used old (ca. 1959) Daihatsu three-wheelers for delivery--2-stroke power; us kids always listened for the familiar music box tinkle, and the putt-putt-putt of the "Joe" ice cream wagons.

    I had the same issue with a slight flash on the charging light after fitting a new alternator to my old Izuzu Trooper. It turned out it I hadn't quite pushed the plug on the unit fully home, making a poor connection. If that's a tested used unit a loose or dirty connection seems like the most likely culprit.

    • @highpath4776
      @highpath4776 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      there is something abour 'seeng; the charge circuit, i dont know how this is achieved

    • @2Wheels4Wheels.
      @2Wheels4Wheels. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +1 on this. If the alternator's been sat for a while there may have been a build-up of surface rust on the smart charge plug. Contact grease and several on/offs of the plug may clear it.
      Also: huzzah for the return of TWC!

  • @frothe42
    @frothe42 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I figured since it stood for so long, your problem might have been binding brakes, so glad that problem was sorted.
    And yes, TWC does sound very good, and eager as she can be.
    Rita must need more attention than you can give her, so I agree, Rita must go to another loving home, do not want her to be scrapped, Rovers are becoming rare because they no longer have value verses cost to repair. And the view of the sea, spectacular. Job well done!

    Your new tools are helping alot and giving you options you didn't have before. Herein lies an important lesson. If a part is awkward to swap, alternator or clutch etc, don't fit a cheap or used replacement part!. The money you save will come and bite you on the bum.....just like the Rover alternator. I've been in the Motor Trade fixing cars for nearly 30 years and there is no way on earth I'd fit a used alternator on 75 (or anything else vaguely modern). Doing a bodge job and crying about it gets zero sympathy...

    • @andrewthompsonuk1
      @andrewthompsonuk1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That I agree with. More recently cheap aftermarket parts are even worse than second hand ones.

      Just thinking same Second hand parts can be false economy.

    • @jbz2079
      @jbz2079 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I would not even consider using used parts on such an evolved job, but I have learned from experience that the only thing worse than doing a horrible awkward is having to
      do it twice.
      Talking of experience, Ian never seems to learn from his previous exploits, he goes on making the same mistakes then gets annoyed with the car for his silliness.
      I've been following for years but maybe not for much longer.

    • @TheGibby3340
      @TheGibby3340 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No surprise...A lot of aftermarket parts these days are absolute rubbish out of the box...So if you are buying a used part, there is a very good chance it’s worn out and rubbish when new. Not a good idea for a difficult installation.

    My gut feeling is that the flicker looks earthy. I have a similar issue with the Corsa C and the ECU light. With all the recent damp weather and leaks around the bulkhead I would check this before throwing in the towel. I think TWC needs a noisy exhaust system. Great seeing TWC back out. She looks terrifying and hilarious to drive in equal measure. For a drag race TPA does have extra weight now such as a Xantia seat, carpet and a full compliment of windows so you have an advantage
    Poor Rita. Hopefully her battery light was a result of low charge after previous alternator issues. A blast round the Evo triangle should sort her.

    Grand to see TWC out and about, Ian. That little beastie is so bloody cute!
    Rita needs some proper loving. I'm going to guess the alternator is a Bosch unit. They do not take kindly to sitting. Being such a terrible job, a freshly and properly rebuilt unit is the way to go. Also, as has been mentioned, clean all the earth points. With a car that old, it is maybe time to think about the battery cables. The copper strands may be failing or corroding, and that also cause the alternator light to come on. When you do sell Rita, look at a Volvo 240 or 740, 1988 and up. They are fantastic cars with the 2.3 litre with Bosch 2.4 fuel injection. Fuel consumption is not bad at all, especially on the open road. I do about 35 miles to the gallon in my Arthur, and he has a comfortable 400,000 on the clock. Parts prices are reasonable, and most parts are very easy to obtain. The estate tires are a bit of a pain to source, and the tailgate glass is hard to find, but those are the only two issues I have had. Even the timing belt on the Red Block is easier, by far, than the alternator on Rita. All in, the job takes about an hour. It would be a great car for family duties.

    Hi Ian, you did check the brushes on the second hand alternator before you fitted it I hope???? Similar things have similar problems. Always have a good look, feel and smell at all second hand parts, every picture tells a story. I pulled a similar old rover out of the salvage yard, it was in there with a reported ecu failure, when I got it home it had the main feed corroded in the power line to the ecu, 30 mins to find, 2 mins to fix. Measure twice cut once. Good luck, great video as usual. Thank you.

    Check the earth strap. Next time alternator light comes on, connect a lump lead from a metal part of the engine to a metal part of the bodywork. If it goes out, clean the earth strap. I have found many electrical gremlins fixed with a new/second earth connection.
    This has always been a first point of call since a car I had many years ago ended up using the choke cable as an earth until it heated up so much that it caused a fire behind the dashboard. Since then, any electrical fault I always check the earths.

    Ian, with hindsight, do you think it would of been wise to fit a reconditioned alternator to the Rover 75. The second hand alternator might of had issues, such as worn out brushes (battery light flashing?). You probably don't relish the thought of another finger nipping swopping of the unit!

  • @bombakdik
    @bombakdik 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know that those battery lights can start acting up when the battery starts dying.
    I had this on my E32. Constant battery light on that became dimmer and dimmer as the revs went up. Alternator was still good and had strong output. Changed the battery and the light immediately went out on idle. And was never dim anymore. You could just measure the output as well.
    I like the Rover 75, I think these cars need to be driven some time to time.
    Cheers from Belgium.

    I know exactly where you are with your feelings for the 75, a couple of weeks ago we decided enough was enough with our Jaguar X type 2.0d, to be honest it has been one big bill away from scrapping for a while now but the last few months have been lots of annoying little jobs, so we have part exchanged against our first ever brand new car...a Renault Captur 130 Iconic EDC arriving soon hopefully.

    The die you're using is a split die intended for use in a die stock ie you can slightly adjust the finished thread. What you needed was a die nut ;-)

      Correct but for cleaning a bit of crud out it will do.

    On the rover, there is a relay under the passenger side window wiper scuttle and it get water in it when the drains in the bulkhead clog up. Check it because the main problem when it's wet is the battery light

    When you use a die to clean a thread, add some oil. That will stop the bits that come off from digging back in to bolt you are trying to clean and making it worse than you started with.

      Or a dab of grease, but don't double dip if you'll be using the same tub of lard for your wheel bearings :=)

    All you need to do Ian is seal all the gaps in the one wall and between roof and the back wall. A few hours spent with builders foam and polythene sheeting would sort the water getting in!

    Interesting video thx, I always find it odd that some cars no matter how much you repair and look after them are so very ungrateful and give you problems after problems.

    I know that look of resignation Ian with the Rover , 2 winters of my 85 BX with the supposedly bullet proof XUD engine either cracking the head or blowing all its oil out. So I said sod it and bought a 4 year old car. A 1994 Rover 414Sli, in 10 year the only thing that went wrong was an HT lead. I don't think its the make just luck?

    Once you lose faith in a car its time to get it gone. I do love a run out in TWC, childhood memories of the oh so safe 70's 🤣

      I managed to fix a similar problem in my fiesta by doing just that. Its half that rovers age too.
