I am so upset that Julian Ovenden is not going to be on Downton Abbey! It really sucks! Plus, we never heard him sing!!!!! He could at least appear in the Christmas special and sing O Holy Night!
+Gayle Asher for some reason or other, Julian seems to come and go in his appearances from years ago, so disappointing, for instance Foyle's War, Downton Abbey and another Brit mystery series the name for which escapes me now. He doesn't seem to stay for very long in anything. As a fan of his, i'm so letdown.
It'll be interesting to see when this is finally aired on PBS. Vanessa Williams as Julie was the best performance of night, followed by Alli Mauzey in a scene-stealing performance.
Allowing "pop-isms" to creep into symphonic period songs is bad enough, but it seems that most young performers are incapable of employing the proper body language for vintage pieces of theater. People carried themselves differently in the 19th Century - why doesn't the director tell them this?
Yes. Unlike other commenters here, I enjoyed the woman's singing (on "Make Believe"), but I found her movements to be too flighty and "girlish." As if she were trying to play an ingenue as she might have been played in the 1950s.
I don't happen to like Lauren Worsham's vocal quality. What is up with her closed vowels at "we only pretaynd, you do not offaynd"? Norm Lewis is not a bass and should not be singing this role. He cannot sustain the notes and I really hate the pop sounding slide he puts in the word "rolling". Come on, New York Phil! Aren't there any singers in NYC who could sing these roles? I'm constantly disappointed with the quality of singers they get for their musical theatre concerts.

Vanessa Williams was painful, took a brilliant song like "Bill" and turned it into emotionless crap. Yikes. She had no understanding of that song and slaughtered it.
This was the first musical I’ve ever seen on pbs and I have loved it ever since
Just saw this on PBS....the Julian/Lauren duet of Make Believe was stunning!!!
I saw this on pbs and it gave me chills just like it would if I was there in the theater. I love this show!!!
