Yeah, when you step in to block something from hitting him you press down. When you pick him up/jump you press/hold up. Pulling him in directions is holding left or right. And you use those simple directions to save him
Edit, and at the end of every level, if you did well then he'll protect you, if you did badly then he will collapse from injuries, and if you go perfect then he calls you cute. There, the game is made

I wish there was more than one season, but this might be the first slice of life anime that didn't leave even a hint of hollowness within me once it was over, just positive feelings and a wide grin that's still on my face hours later
