  • In the first of a new series, James Payne and Joanne Shurvell combine their love of Art and Travel, as they look at less well known museums in cities around the world.
In "Great Art Cities Explained: London", we look at three museums whose collections were started by Mavericks. The Sir John Soane's Museum, The Wallace Collection and Kenwood House.
We discuss works by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Canaletto and Hogarth.

I finally travelled to London, and I visited the Soane Museum. "A rake's progress" is available for 10 minutes every day at 2 PM. It's magical, but Hogarth's "Humours of an Election" is sublime (you have more time to admire the details). Worth the visit 100%

I never was much one for "great art", not being exposed to it much during my youth...and I probably will never travel to see any of these galleries or paintings in person...but I come away from your wonderful videos feeling enriched and satisfied that I have had the opportunity to "see" such works. Better yet, in the privacy of my own room without the crowds jostling me for position or the expenses involved. Thank you once again for an excellent piece that brings such beauty to my humble abode.

Good grief - the dozens of times I have been for walks on Hampstead Heath and walked right past Kenwood House never knowing it was full of incredible paintings- I could kick myself! Also, I visited the Soane back in the 1990s when studying in London. It is so memorable and wonderful that last year I took my family to see it. However, I had no idea that The Rakes Progress paintings were housed inside. Finally, the Wallace collection- that will be next on my places to visit when I next go to London. Superb video, as always!

Indeed-this superb video gives us art lovers a glimpse into “the fascinating stories” behind these lesser known galleries, these patrons of the art, their art collection, and the legacy they made by bequeathing their art collection as a trust, as a lasting legacy to benefit culture by promoting the appreciation of art by the public at large. Couldn’t help but admire the story revealed here of William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, who is not only wealthy and privileged but is also a distinguished jurist, highly cultured and possessed an acute moral and social conscience by supporting the long struggle for the abolition of slavery in the British empire. Excellent analysis of the pieces by Vermeer, Hals, Rembrandt and more. Looking forward to these series. Many thanks for sharing your masterful knowledge and deep appreciation of art. My dad and I spent almost 6 hours in the MET in New York once. Neither of us know much more than some trivia here and there. Even with our lack of context for most of it. I remember turning a corner to suddenly be faced with one of Dali's Cruxificions. I was seriously awestruck.
We both ended up exhausted. Our brains couldn't process any more art. We looked at the map of the museum on the way out. We realized we had only seen about one quarter of the collection in 6 hours. Lol

I'm planning my next vacation based on the galleries/paintings I've learned about in these videos. You make understanding/appreciating art so accessible.

It's amazing that a painting by Rembrandt is considered to be one of the best paintings in the whole art collection of London, one of the most important cities in the world, and Rembrant was born in the same Dutch city as I was, with a population no more than 100.000, and the place where his house used to be is a relatively tucked away location in the city but still one of my favorite places in the whole city.

A splendid debut video for the series! I didn’t know what to expect, really, but I certainly could not expect an examination of those three art collections about which I knew absolutely nothing. Thanks so much, James and Joanne!

I can't believe I've never seen Laughing Cavalier before and how wild that it was made in 1624, there's something very modern about it

I had no idea there are over 800 art galleries just in London. I really enjoyed this one, it was tour de force of true masterpieces. Really looking forward to your Vermeer vid. Everytime I see one of his paintings i just think "wow". Not very technical I know...but that is how his works make me feel. Great stuff GAE.

Please do more videos like this one! I loved this, I loved hearing the story behind how collections and museums came to be and there are so many in London that could be explored. I find the story of Samuel Courtauld and his own collection and his contributions to the National Gallery really interesting.

I came across the Wallace Collection as I was walking around my workplace in central London. It trully is a great place, who impresses even those not so art-enthused. I was very happy to see it featured on this channel. Sir Joan Soane Museum is the next one on my London art bucket list
