Russell: As kids, in the summer, we'd hike to the grocery store for 10-cent sugar cane. It was fun to peel and chew. It lasted longer than candy and probably worse for the teeth. I don't believe I've seen it sold anywhere since the 60s. I'm sure you've been on a train traveling by the C&H plant in Crockett, CA (aka Sugartown), near the Martinez station (as you know). Animals running across hwy 27 hit by cars traffic in general is horrible
