A try that has lived long in the memory of anyone who saw it. I agree, it would have been lovely to see Richard play Boks for longer. He was certainly young enough and good enough to be part of the 2007 squad.
The try Richard scored against NZ is unforgetable. When i think of all the great tries scored by the boks it stands out for me along with that Andre Snyman try against England at Twickenham.
As always a good interview Peter! Can you believe it but up till this day a lot of people still talk about Richard's try in Dunedin back in '03 & how he brushed aside Carlos Spencer! The ABs won that test 19-11 but looking back with a bit of luck the Boks could've won that test!
Yes that try secured his place in Springbok rugby history forever! Considering we had been whipped 52-16 by them a few weeks earlier, 19-11 was a much better showing and yes, we certainly had our chances.
I used to represent Richard. (I was his agent). Such a great character and very funny. Lovely chap. He was one of the most impressive ball carrying props. In early days, the Bulls didn’t want to offer him a contract but Heyneke Meyer fought for him with the board and they relented and backed Heyneke’s judgement. The rest is history !!
Yeah but if you look at the replay if it was a decent pass at least he would have been able to brace himself. That said not sure if that would have helped!
Yes, I agree! Hard to think of anything that beats a prop charging at full speed across 50 metres and bumping a defender out of the way ... mercilessly!
That venue in D.C. was ridiculous. At the time I had no idea RFK Stadium was still standing because the Washington NFL team abandoned it to play in Virginia. World Rugby dropped the ball on that 1.
Agree. No idea why that venue was chosen. Previously high-profile international Tests like New Zealand v Ireland took place at Soldier Field in Chicago. That's a great stadium.
@@frontrowrugby and Soldier field was packed. I watched that game on NBC live. I had a theory that the boks game was in DC to make it easier for the SA ambassador to show up. World Rugby should've tried for Yankees Stadium or Citifield. The Yankees & Mets are not in town at the same time.
Poor marketing and planning it has to be said. I don't think World Rugby had anything to do with it though. It was between SA Rugby and the Welsh union.

Who will ever forget that amazing try! Richard deserved to play for the Boks for much longer.

@@frontrowrugby I remember the call from Grant Nisbett "that's as good a try you'll see from a prop forward." Carlos Spencer tried to take him on.
It was a very special moment!
That memory of Dunedin still a memory. Tough and bok made!
A brilliant moment in Bok history!

Very cool, Jason! Thanks for sharing. Glad you enjoyed the video and yes, I agree, Richard is a top, top guy!
Derick Hougaard took one heck of hit from the chiropractor in that Samoa game lol. Probably still wakes up middle of night.
It was a massive hit. He asked Joost to pass it a little lower next time ... Joost wasn't impressed!
@@frontrowrugby he's was getting sat down no matter where Joost put the pass lol.

Probably the best try ever by a forward and speed ever

Haha, yes many people don't realise that Richard is actually Afrikaans.

I wonder how many people remember there was a provincial team called Stellaland?
