U.S. vs China - What The World Thinks

  • The U.S. and China will likely be the two most influential countries for the rest of the 21st century. This is how people in 40 countries around the world currently view the two nations across a variety of global issues, according to a study by the Pew Research Center.

    Broadly, the U.S. is seen more positively in Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia; while China is viewed significantly more favorably in the Middle East.
    The United States’ “Pivot to Asia” is welcomed by most of the countries in the region, although the Malaysians and Pakistanis think it’s a bad thing because it could lead to conflict with China. 54% of Chinese think the U.S. is trying to prevent it from becoming as powerful.
    Here are the favorability ratings for America among the other countries in the study. As you can see, the U.S. is most popular in the Philippines, Ghana, it’s close allies South Korea and Israel, Kenya and the rest of Africa, along with Italy. The Europeans are strongly supportive, but not overwhelmingly so. While Russia has a very negative view of the United States, fueled by the non-stop anti-U.S. propaganda coming from Putin’s Kremlin.
    Zooming in, you see that the Russians turned sharply against America around the time Putin faced strong opposition at home, which is when he began building up America as an external threat.
    Globally, it’s fascinating how much more positively younger generations view the U.S. now that they are all on the Internet, a communication medium which has so far been dominated by the West.
    This could be behind the strong confidence most in the world have in the decision-making capabilities of one of the most Internet-savvy leaders in history, U.S. President Barack Obama.
    Now, these are the global favorability ratings of China. The Pakistanis may be China’s closest ally, sharing not only a productive relationship, but also a common cross border rival, in India. Africans are also overwhelmingly supportive thanks to the money -- and migrant workers -- the Chinese are pouring into the continent as its largest trading partner. The Russian’s love China partially because they too share a common rival: America, the current global superpower. The West’s views are all fairly consistent in their skeptical feelings toward the Chinese, although France and the UK have a more favorable view.
    Favorability views of China have changed in the past year thanks to actions like Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to India.
    Economically, the world increasingly thinks the U.S. is still the leader, and this data was gathered before China’s economic troubles this summer...
    But the world is also convinced that China has, or is on its way to, replacing the United States as the superpower. Of the 40 nations in this survey only Brazil, Uganda, close U.S. allies the Philippines and Japan, Vietnam, and the U.S. itself think China will never replace the U.S., although it’s remarkable how pessimistic even the Americans are.
    Generally, China is viewed very negatively on its respect for the personal freedoms of its people, although countries that also don’t have the greatest human rights records have a more favorable view of China on this issue because they don’t really understand what it’s like to be truly free of government oppression either, like the Russians, Africans, Middle Easterners, and Venezuelans in this survey.
    China’s global rating on this issue has actually taken a hit over the past year as pro-democracy protests that erupted in Hong Kong were forcefully put down. The Communist Party also doubled down on its Orwellian Internet censorship campaign, which we detailed in a previous video you can watch here and through the link below.
    Next is the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The largest trade deal in world history, that’s currently being spearheaded by the United States, is strongly supported by citizens in all countries involved. Obama’s main objective here is to strengthen America’s economic ties with China’s neighbors, as a countermeasure to the power of the Chinese economy.

    The data is wrong!
    1.although Vietnam and China have contradictions on the border issue, but China's entertainment culture in Vietnam is very popular.Chinese movies, TV drama,TV shows, and music are popular in Vietnam, so it is impossible to have nearly 80% of the people hate china.
    2.South Korea and China have a very deep and deep contradictions, The Korean people who favorite China can not reach more than 60%.The Koreans who hate China are more than those who hate Japan.
    3.Although China and Japan is a blood feud, but ordinary Japanese who hate China not so much.The Kapanese who favorite China are probably in 30~40%.
    4.Germany has not so many people hate China, China and Germany almost no intersection, hate what?To some extent, Italy is relatively mild to China.After all, Italy is known as "Europe‘s China”.

      Philippines and China already have these disputes in south china sea since early 1900's but both countries have been peaceful neighbors and never had any big conflicts or tensions at all. These conflicts started when USA starts militarizing in south east asia. China felt so threaten about it that they think they should claim almost all south china sea to make man made militarized islands and make it as their chain of defense to counter balance U.S. heavy military presence in the region. I dnt know what the americans real motive in the region but i think they should leave the area.

    • @ryanmatthews9767
      @ryanmatthews9767 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      the SCS had not seen the US militarise the area any further most of what China points out as miliarising had been in place since WW2 but were actually decreasing with the US pulling out of the Phillipines and they were even seriously talking about leaving Japan and just maintaining enough presence to deter NK from taking SK and China from taking Taiwan but then China saw that as a chance to become more aggressive and even having drills right on Taiwans coast (some missiles even hit their coast) and their aggressive actions including in areas which China has no claims.

      The only thing that I can see a case being made for is the topic of the polls themselves being favorable, but even so it's still informative and anyone who can't utilize this information and thing for themselves likely already had a very strong opinion before this and will just claim it be false, or mock those doing so, based on their point of view.

    I think the Vietnamese have forgotten that little war America waged against them back in the 60s. Lest we forget, Vietnamese people, empires do not have allies or enemies, empires ONLY have interests. The reasons why the Islamic countries, such as Pakistan, Malaysia and the "Middle East" (excluding Israel) and North Africa, are skeptical of the US is due to the negative influences US imperialism has spread across the world, in the form of resource wars, undermining democratically held elections, regime changes, backing cruel dictators, working for multinational corporations that maximize profits by any means necessary. I am also skeptical of China's ambitions, considering how they are merely interested in resources of African nations, not necessarily the ethnic divisions that result in genocide and war crimes. But realistically, it's the Americans that have shed innocent blood in Asia, Africa, and propping up dictators within Latin America during the 60s onward. The reason for such favorable views of the US from Latin America is likely due to economic partnerships that have mitigated poverty levels, although not significantly. But it is true that Latin America has broken free from the shackles of imperialism and are charting their own destiny without US hegemony. Europe and Japan are under the umbrella of American influence, so their favorability should certainly not come as a surprise. Yet I insist that world powers only have interests, and if only now do the UK and US have a "special relationship" post WW2, keep in mind that America was once a colony of the UK and fought a major war against them for independence. Again, geopolitical interests are at work here, not because the Britishers genuinely love warmongering Americans. Polling does not reflect geopolitical and socio-economic statistics, it is merely data of people's opinions about a subject matter. The world will only favor a power that does not drop bombs on it, case and point.

      +Nicole zhong Peace, like love and friendship, is a 2-sided thing. You need both parties to be peaceful for peace to actually work. Chinese people can try to appease whatever they want, but it'll be for naught if the rest of world see China as enemy. For now, I'd say peace doesn't really work for China. My advice to you would be to be friendly but keep your military up so that jackasses can all sit down and talk when they know there are guns behind their head. No military, no talk, and therefore, no peace.
      But you as a Chinese girl shouldn't worry much, eh? Whether China is destroyed or not, Chinese girls will be accepted by white guys anyway. So uh... all is well?

      +Flower_Tower China has no interest in becoming a Hegemon like the US in terms of the military. Recently they have planned to reduce the number of troops they have by 300,000 to commemorate the Second World War. However, you are correct on China's economic plans as they are looking to their past role in the world, and it being common sense.

    • @ssssaa2

      Because China's maximum potential is far greater than russias, and probably notably greater than the United States, russia will not be a true equal to the United states again, but china could be more than an equal to america. I think the thing that struck me the most was the overwhelmingly positive opinion of the Pakistanis as regards to China compared to the US. There may be many factors to this, some being blatantly obvious, over the last couple of years that have led to this. If I am not mistaken I am pretty sure the Chinese multi-billion dollar investment in Pakistan. Which significantly changed their opinion about China. This investment again I think is based mostly on the economic sector and the diminishing energy sector of Pakistan. I mean the US has heavily invested in them as well but mostly in terms of military instead of infrastructure, education etc. which would've imho improved the relations more favorably to the US.

    wait hold on a sec, you just massively oversimplified the protests in Hong Kong. Even though tear gas was deployed on the first day of the protest, the protests were not forcefully put down. People (mostly) peacefully occupied the streets for about a month and people eventually dispersed. Also, the protests were not simply about democracy, it was about wanting a direct universal suffrage system where each citizen had a vote to choose a chief executive from a pool of candidates not filtered by the chinese government. Even the united states (with all its freedoms)has an electoral college system and not direct universal suffrage so simplifying it to a forceful putdown of a democratic protest is a horrid way of putting it

      yeah, building military across China and russia. this is why we seem so desperate in South China Sea. The Chinese coast facing Pacific ocean is literally surrounded by us military bases: Japan and Korea etc. We fear the NATO and the hatred that the Western media built towards us. i feel sorry for ppl in Vietnam and Philippines, their countries become pawns of US China conflicts.

    • @GK-ui8fv
      @GK-ui8fv 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the way, what an excuse for noting the reason of China 's behavior in south China Sea or military strengthening. USA always had the largest military budget. Russia could not catch up with them till date, China also can not catch up with them even if it becomes no 1 economy tomorrow because USA is so far ahead particularly in navy for so many decades since second world war, so it will take at least two decades or more even if China surpasses USA tomorrow to cone anywhere near the capacity of US naval power but whole of South China Sea has begun to slip out from all these countries. Even USA is finding unable to help the countries who have given bases to it. Bases are useless. Even pacific occean treaty organisation (POTO) will be useless even if it comes into being. China has already built airstrips and building more and more in claimed atolls, reefs, tiny islands. By the time, USA gets ready even if it wants to for any action, this whole area will be gone. USA will be so much surrounded by China from so many locations that it will not even bother to try taking any military action. So, Vietnam, Philippines etc are hardly worth bothering about for China. So no one has to fret.
