    Giant Talon E+ MTB first impression. Entry level electric mountain bike?
    Ever since the video I did on Giant's electric trance I have been getting asked about a more entry level e-bike. The Talon E+ is Giant's answer to that and today you get to join me in my first impression of this machine.

    I can see you really looked at price point with pandemic factors in mind which is a useful consideration for buyers. Cheers.

    I have this bike. I actually have 2 of them. My wife has the LIV Tempt E+ which is the women’s version of the same bike. I have about ~100+ miles on my bike. I do wish the front fork was better and will be one of the things I upgrade. It makes a heavy bike heavy when you are trying to get some travel downhill or with weight transfers to the back tire to hop a curb. I have done some real gnarly uphills and downhills too. Upgrading the drive train and tires will be the next upgrade. It sits really nice in the mud and can crank through the muck. It really needs some gearing and grip for steep uphills. Brakes are great even with the extra weight of the component setup. Both my wife and I love these bikes. We would both buy them again @ $2750 a piece.

    You give it a 3 out of 5, while sitting down, doing the "review".. and never took it for a ride. So much for a review

    Nicely done video edit and review. I'm considering this bike for road use. For me being a hardcore mtb rider this bike is not really made for real trails. Like you said that fork is crap and the parts spec will not hold up for technical trails. I guess they use qr axles as they're easier to remove the wheels for beginner riders, which I think this bike is aimed for. But price-wise, there's very little price difference wholesale for thru-axles vs qr for axles and hubs. And the benefits of stiffness in ride quality and longevity is great between the two axle types.
    I prefer coil forks for suppleness and plush ride. But unless you're at the correct spring rate, the fork will either be too soft or too harsh. Air is lighter and more adjustable but just not as plush as a decent coil. Keyword: Decent. These forks are crap and maybe dont have different spring rates available and there may not be other rates available from Giant or aftermarket. Regarding weight for the coil: Not an issue on an ebike. The weight is negligible for an ebike. That said for those that want to upgrade the fork, there are plenty of options from the two big brand suspension companies, Fox and Rockshox. One thing to look for are magnesium stanchions vs those chrome-plated forks. The low end forks use chrome-plated stanchions which are flexy cheap steel.
    Both Fox and Rockshox make ebike specific forks. Fox has a nice feature on their steer tubes using an eccentric tube. This gives a wider girth at the front and back of the tube theoretically making it stiffer. A more stiff steer tube is preferred on an ebike as under braking forces, just the added weight of these ebikes vs regular bikes makes the fork more prone to flex. Also with these ebikes forces over time, the junction at the steer tube-crown and stanchions-crown areas are prone to creaking. These two areas are press fitted and on cheaper forks, the tolerances are not as tight and are therefore more likely to start flexing and creaking especially with the heavier ebike weights.

    Very similar to the Fathom E+3 29 sold in the UK and Europe. It comes with the Syncdrive Sport motor with 70nm torque. Don’t bother with power levels 1&2, hardly any assist. Percentage of power assist up to 350 percent can be set for each level using the app once connected to the bike. 👍

      Hi Mike, I'm not Mossie but I know the answer... no, they don't charge as they ride. You plug the bike in or remove the battery and plug it into a charger.

    I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed. We are planning on getting my wife one, that way she can keep up and enjoy rides with me, the alternative is I have to ride at a pace that doesn't get my heart rate up for us to ride together. Win win

    Can't be a Popular-bike. Nor can any e-bike, judging that every TH-cam video is by so-called "Professional," reviewer channels and not actual...owners. E-bikes are popular in Europe? Yeah, to some extent because of the over-population and small land area. And most of those were urban e-bikes, at least in Italy. Extremely few e-mountain bikes on the Cannoli trails, we noticed. Much rather watch reviews from actual owners, and not a commercial promoting a product for those obsessive views.

    I'm not into e-MTB. I have not used one. And I have not seen one here at my end in the Philippines.
    Maybe I'd consider e-MTB when I'm already old & unable to propel a bike using my own leg power.

    I bought a new Talon, 2 years ago for about $600. Today the E version is $2800. I can buy the Bafang 750 watt system with a big battery, and be all in for WAY less that. These are considerably overpriced.

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To be fair, a lot of what you're paying for on a good quality mid-drive bike is the system that monitors your pedalling input cadence, power, wheel speed, inclination and supplying the power in a smooth and predictable manner. Having tried some rear wheel motor ebikes and less sophisticated ebikes I would quickly be testing my helmet's safety rating as they're kinda scary in technical trail situations when you need to know exactly how your bike is going to behave.

    Nice looking bike but poor quality control or poor transport.Rear wheel has major issues right out of the box. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Rear axle is bent! Derailleur is misaligned.Since the rear wheel comes assembled I would have expected better.Assembly instructions poorly written, but that was not unexpected...just annoying.I just had the bike checked at a shop and was told that I should contact the seller about getting a whole rear wheel assembly with cartridge. (The bike shop could not do anything to help me).Not a good experience with this bike, so lesson learned.Added 3 stars for excellent customer serviceUpdate Sept 8 2020Just received a complete replacement wheel for free. Great service and an otherwise fine bike.

    What's about the snow. Can it ride in the snow?

    • @juhner84
      @juhner84 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the Fathom E+ which is basically a step better than the Talon. Depends on what kind of snow you’re talking about. It CAN ride in just about any kind of snow, but if it’s not packed like a trail or maintained road it’s going to keep swerving. But that’s with any MTB and you’re better off with a fatbike in deeper snow anyway.
