Three Days in the Hospital, Dog Bite from Rescue Dog | Newstates in the States

- A warning for every dog owner! How a small dog bite from our lovable rescue dog turned into a serious infection.
We’ve had some regression with our two puggles and newly adopted Mexican beach dog, Scout. You might remember, Scout's animal rescue story went viral earlier this year. Things were going great until recently. The dogs have been fighting in the RV and I did what everyone (and common sense) tells you not to do. I tried to break it up by grabbing them and wound up with a dog bite.
The bite itself wasn't bad, but the infection that followed was brutal. We went to urgent care as soon as it happened, they cleaned it and put me on amoxicillin. But within 24 hours, the swelling and pain was getting worse. Most concerning were the red streaks extending up my arm all the way to my shoulder, a major sign that infection is spreading and needs to be treated ASAP.
So a little over 24 hours after the dog bite happened, we made an emergency room visit where I was admitted for my first ever hospital stay and spent the next 3 days. They switched my antibiotics which I was receiving three times a day via IV. Thankfully, they did their job and no surgery was required to drain the infection.
Sadly, Scout, our rescue pup, was the one who bit me. She absolutely did not mean it and was in full defense mode. We went back to the drawing board on dealing with the dog aggression issues and enlisted the help of a professional dog trainer.
We still have a lot of work ahead of us to deal with the behavioral issues and it’s been an emotional few weeks.
Our thanks to Steve Delaney from the Dog House located in Breckenridge, Colorado as well as the amazing medical team at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco, Colorado.

You guys are so awesome for not giving up on Scout! I had a bite from a cat years ago, exact same place and it also got infected. I had my cat (little chico) since he was born, however, he wasn't neutered at the time of the bite and we were trying to turn him into a house cat, so he was really stressed out. We learned from this lesson, we were never mad at him, neutered him and were very patient with his adaptation process. 10 years later, he's the sweetest most loving cat I ever had and now completly adapted to being a full time house cat. Good luck with the doggies and don't give up! Their love is worth it in the end :) ❤
I'm so glad you are feeling better. Animal bites are no joke. The mouth is a breeding ground of bacteria. As a nurse I had several patients in the hospital with 8nfected bites, it even worse in a joint, as you have had. It will be sore while you build back the muscle and tendons, but it will get better. I wish you all good health and great journeys.
Hi Lisa, thank you so much! Yes, so much bacteria in their mouths... I am glad I got help when I did or it could have gotten even worse. I definitely still have soreness in my wrist, mostly in the mornings but I know it will heal in time. Thanks for watching and commenting! 💓 - Katelyn
We started our travels with two dogs, sadly one of them passed away last winter. Traveling with dogs is a challenge but we will always have dogs with us. When we had two dogs, they did fight occasionally and we sometimes got bit breaking them up. Glad your bite healed, the dog handler was a very cool guy. If we add a second dog we will get with someone like that to help with harmony. Larry
Glad both you & Scout are okay! I’m sure you were scared for Scout! I was afraid they were going to take her away which would’ve been devastating for all of us! Good luck with the training! So happy she gets to stay with her family!!! ❤️
Thank you Sandra! 💓Very scary, for sure. We were researching the animal bite laws on the way to the ER. 😰 But we were so relieved that it was such a simple process. -Katelyn
It's so crazy the garbage they feed people in the hospital, especially you recovering from an infection smh. so glad you pulled through ok.
I’m so glad to find out that Scout didn’t mean to bite you and you don’t hold it against your sweet girl. I was so touched by your story of adopting Scout. You are sweet people and she’s a sweet girl. I hope things are working out. I will be watching and wishing the best.
I could never hold it against her! She's the best and was just defending herself. ❤️ Happy to say things between the 3 have gotten SO much better and we're so thankful that she's part of our family. Thank you for your kind words!! 🥰 -Katelyn
@@NewstateNomads You’re welcome 😊 As a dog trainer, and dog lover, I was really happy you shared your story. You guys are good people.
Glad you recovered and so forgiving ....scout loves you! Your pups are precious. Good luck.
Awwww thank you so much! She's the best and was just protecting herself. Things between all the pups have been MUCH better. ♥️ -Katelyn
Katelyn, I'm glad you have healed and that the doggie problems seem to be manageable. Good luck with continuing training of the doggies.
Hi Dolly! Thank you so much, really optimistic that we can keep making progress. It's definitely two steps forward and one step back, but we'll get there! 💓 -Katelyn
I am so sorry you had to go through all this. Glad you are better. Unfortunately, I have been in the hospital a few times and always leave with a better appreciation for nurses. They are the real heroes... in my book.
Hi Marty! Thank you so much, almost all healed up. You're right... they really are incredible. Such a hard job! I was so thankful for them all. -Katelyn
Unfortunately, we've had a similar situation, both with being bitten while stopping a fight between two dominant females and, in a different situation, dealing with a spreading infection. In our case, the urgent care PA almost cost my wife her life. Despite being told of her previous experience with MRSA, the PA insisted that she had a spider bite and treated her for that. When she got much worse two days later, she ended up in the emergency room for emergency surgery to correct the problem. She spent seven days in the hospital being treated for MRSA and the doctor told her that if she had waited much longer, she could either have lost her leg or died. We haven't trusted urgent care for anything more than a minor injury since and are fortunate that my employer offers an in-house medical care facility with very experienced personnel. We're glad this turned out as well as it has and hope your training with Scout calms the tension in your pack. We're still working with our Bella after five years.
Hi Don! Oh my goodness... so sorry you're wife had to go through that. So scary and very frustrating when you don't get the care you need. I am glad she finally got help in the ER. Thank you for watching our video and sharing your story, too. I know it will be a work in progress for a long time, but hoping we can get there! -Katelyn
Sorry to hear about your dog bite. Glad you are doing better.
Thank you so much, Darlene! 💓 -Katelyn
A hard lesson learnt but what a result. You were extremely fortunate to heal so well Katelyn. Glad the right people were in the right place for you. What a worrying time for everyone. Your commitment to your pets is commendable. Loved the trainer. Gifted person. High praise to you both. Take care, stay safe and keep smiling. ❤️👍🎥🌷🙋♀️
Hi Oma! Thank you so much. ❤️ I'm so glad I got the level of care I did, the nurses were incredible. We love our fur babies so much! -Katelyn
Good Job on the dog bite video! Very informative. This is Taxman met you at Sedona RV park with my wife. We've since gone to Grand Tetons to Mt Rushmore can't wait to get back there sometime, and Sedona too.
Hey Mark! Great to hear from you! Thanks for watching our video. We want to head to Grand Tetons soon, how was it?! After Sedona, we went to Flagstaff and Grand Canyon, then Colorado where we've been since the end of July!
@@NewstateNomads Grand Tetons one of my favorite places now. RV at the Virginian downtown Jackson Wyoming. Youll be right in all the action coolest downtown area ive seen in a while. Be sure and catch the the western/supper entertainment show on the way to teton village close to jackson by snake river. Best show and dinner in a barn setting i have ever seen. 39.00 apiece includes country cookout and show. Get there hour early for upfront, you will be amazed by the music! Let me know go before it gets cold there things close up.
I’m so sorry to hear what happened:(.... I have a Chihuahua and she 10 years old and she likes picks fight with my 2 year old German Shepherd .
I thank GOD Almighty the my German Shepherd have a gentle heart.
Much prayer for your healing and that you get back home soon.
Thank you! It's been a rough month, but hoping we're on the right track now! -Katelyn
I hope everything works out with the dogs:)...
Give safe wishing you the best for both of you guys:).
Very scary! So glad you’re working with the dog instead of abandoning. Lots of love.
Aww thank you! ❤️ Oh yes, we aren't giving up on our girl! We've been through too much and will always fight for her!
So glad you are better and I am so glad you guys are working with the girls to make everyone live harmoniously 💗
Thank you so much!! It's definitely a work in progress, but we were just chatting with Steve again and we know we'll get there in time! -Katelyn
So happy that your story has a great resolution. Today, Sept 13 is World Sepsis Day. As the sepsis coordinator in a large hospital in Texas, I was grateful that you used the word "sepsis" as so many people have no idea what sepsis is. Katelyn, you were right, people try to be brave and ride it out when they really should be seeking medical attention. Have followed you all for a while. Looking forward to many more years of great video adventures!
Hi Kathy! Thank you so much, and wow! What amazing timing. Yes, so many people don't realize the seriousness of sepsis and infections spreading like that. I knew as soon as those streaks started that I needed help. We're so glad you enjoy following along on our journey! ❤ -Katelyn
Sorry you got a Scout bite, but glad you went to see a trainer. Keep up the good work. Love the way food makes you smile!
Hi Barbara! Thank you so much, we're so thankful for Steve, the trainer. He's been such a big help! Haha, oh yes. I love food... if I'm not excited about food, then you know something's really wrong! 😆💓-Katelyn
You guys are SO great!!! I love your family ❤️ SO glad that you’re ok, Katelynn!
Hi Cristina! Awww, you're so sweet. Thank you so much! I'm definitely on the mend and hoping we can get these pups in shape! 😆💓Thank you for the sweet comment! -Katelyn
You guys are on the right track..animals (dogs) have to understand your the one in charge..not always easy but doable..the key..patients and persistence..you got this.
You're right about that, lots of hard work but totally worth it. Hoping we can see improvement soon, it's definitely stressful. We just love them so much and don't want anyone else to get hurt! Thanks so much for watching, Lee! 💓 -Katelyn
So happy you and Scout are both OK. Take care!
Thank you so much, Rebecca!
OMG, sorry! Hope you are doing okay now ☺️
Aww thank you Lynn! I'm all healed up now, thank goodness! ♥️👏
Thanks for keeping it real and giving important information...stay well.
Aww thank you so much! We appreciate that!! ❤️ -Katelyn
So glad you got better
Wow. Happy your ok and the fur babies are getting better (slowly). But progress is being made.
Hi Ed, thank you so much! It's a work in progress, but we're getting there! -Katelyn
So So sorry for everything. Finally, you are healing. Ya'll have the love and kindness to correct the problem. We are with you always!
Thank you SO much! 💓 Your kind words and support mean so much to us as we try to get through these challenges! We'll definitely keep everyone posted on our progress. -Katelyn
I just love you guys; even in the hospital ... you managed to be funny, positive, informative and down right a great person. At first, I didn't want to watch this episode since I was afraid you guys had to get rid of Scout but I am happy she is still part of the pack! 😍
Awww Jose! Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️ you're so kind! We won't give up on Scout! We've been through too much with her and love her so much!
So happy your better n healing
Thank you so much!! -Katelyn
I'm so glad you guys are ok. Hope you get plenty of rest still and stay safe.
Thank you so much, I am on the mend! 💓 -Katelyn
Aww, sorry this happened but glad that you have recovered and that you are doing better. I am sure Scout didn't mean to bite you and she has probably apologized in her own way. Hopefully the issue with them will be fully resolved soon. Best wishes.
Hi there, thank you so much! You're right.. she really didn't mean to bite me and I knew the instant it happened it was because of where I inserted my hand trying to break them up. Pure accident. She's apologized a lot. Thank you for the well-wishes, hoping we're on the right track! -Katelyn
My goodness! What a thing to go through! 😔 So sorry you had to go through that Katelyn. That went way farther than I expected. I was bit by Aubie once when breaking up a fight with him and a neighborhood dog. Like you, I stuck my hand in to break them apart. 🤦🏻♀️. So glad you healed and look forward to seeing updates on your kids. Parenting can be tough! 😉❤️🐾
It definitely escalated fast, that's for sure! Ouch! So sorry you got bit too, it can happen sooo fast! You're right about that... fur kids! 😂❤
Introducing dogs into an existing pack can be difficult. I had four males, all rescues, and then two pit bull females, a mother and her pup, showed up one day, having been discarded by their previous owner and in sad shape. The pits were a mother and daughter and got along great. However, that was not the case with putting them with my four smaller mix-breed males. It took me about six weeks of crate and rotate before I was able to put them together. Not long after, we had a six-dog pack of various sizes that managed to get along great. There were a couple a minor skirmishes, but nothing serious. When you're a huge dog lover, you'll do anything to provide your four-legged friends a comfortable and healthy life. Good luck on your pack, I'm sure it will work out just the way you want.
Definitely a challenge, and it's elevated since Piper and Ella are litter mates and have had that bond since the womb. But we're working on it. Amazing you were able to work through the issues with that many dogs, wow! You're right, when you love them like we all do... you'll try anything! Thank you so much for the well-wishes and for watching our video! -Katelyn
Glade to see you have not lost your love of food, good luck
NEVER! 😂🍕🍔 If I don't want to eat, then you know something is seriously wrong. Thank you so much, Brad! -Katelyn
So glad that you were on top of that and it healed. Excellent video sharing all of the truthful details, one of life's bumps in the road and onward you all go. Take care to all of you.
Hi Susie! Thank you so much for the support & kind words, it means a lot to us! ❤ -Katelyn
Very glad you're all healed up, Katelyn! Howard's a capital "K" keeper! It's hard bringing in a 3rd animal later. In a 25' RV might even be harder. We travel with 3 cats; 12 and 13 yr olds, 3rd cat, 4 yr old huge orange tabby, not welcomed at all. He is very passive, though, so no fights. Going on 2 yrs now, a little more acceptance at home and in the RV, watch alot of Jackson Galaxy videos! You two love your kids, so it will all work out. Looking forward to your next video! 🐕 🐈
Thanks so much! ❤ He really is, such a great husband! It really is tough, and we knew there'd be challenges but hoped it wouldn't get to this point. But here we are, just have to figure out how to cope. So glad you don't have any fights with the kitties!! -Katelyn
So sorry about the dog bite, I'm playing catch up on your videos. We also just adopted a dog we rescued in Ecuador after we lost Gracie. She's been a bit rough with Katie so we've had similar worries, we did hire a trainer here in Cuenca Ecuador since we are here for a few more months. Hope your concerns with Scout are in the rearview mirror. That's an RV joke.
Oh I got the joke... 😂 Dog training is still a work in progress, but we do see improvement across the board. We've made several adjustments along the way, and thankfully no fights since we started training! Thanks so much for watching. 👍 -Howard
I had the same issue when I introduced my pups to ea other. the little steps add up, stay consistent and be commited. it took me about 6-7 months of serious rule following for there to essentially never having a fight again. obedience train with lots of waiting etc .
Love and Hugs from Sapulpa Oklahoma
Thank you so much Gwen!! -Katelyn
So glad you’re ok now. I have the same issue. I had two dogs for six years then got another. At first they fought a lot but I separate them when food is involved and take turns separating them during bed time. And just watch over carefully at all other times. It has improved going on five years together now they still have some issues but it’s way better! Take care and love watching your travels! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
So glad you found ways to keep the peace, it can be so tough trying to break 3 up. What kind of pups are they? So great that it's going on 5 years! Hoping we can look back in 5 years and say the same :) Thank you so much for watching!! -Katelyn
Newstate Nomads They are chihuahuas 😄❤️
So sad, I hope you get better and you can fugure out a solution with the dogs.
Thank you, Eric! Definitely been a rough couple of weeks but we've made some improvement. Just going to take time, but we're hopeful! -Katelyn
Wow that was scary! Glad you're OK.
Thanks so much, crazy how quickly it escalated!
Thank you for showing this. I’ve just got bitten by my dog on the finger (he went into a seizure) and 36hrs later I’ve got signs of infection. With you showing the streaks, I now know what to look out for, if the antibiotics don’t kick in. Unfortunately I’m allergic to the tetanus vaccine so it’s a wait and see…
So sorry to hear that! Is your dog ok, now? The first antibiotics didn't work for us, definitely go to the ER if you start to see streaking! ♥️ -Howard
Wow, what a great story, thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much, Sydney!
Thanks so much for sharing this most unfortunate experience. Who knew it could become so bad - and so quickly! What a great heads-up about being up to date on pets' shots and not trying to be strong/brave in situations like this. Great dog trainer. Please keep us updated on how your training and the dogs' is working out.
Great video guys. Really nice to see everyone recover and appreciate the filming of the "reality" of owning pets. It's not always fun, but you didn't give-up on your animals because of the situation at hand. We all know those pet owners that would go the other way if something happened like this. Kudos to you both for researching and understanding. Glad you made it through!
Thanks so much, John! We definitely try to keep it real here and you're absolutely right. You can't give up on them when things get tough. They're family, and we're committed to doing everything we can to improve the situation. -Katelyn
So nice meeting you today! ("Hey! You're on TH-cam!" Lol. Apparently, I can't really talk when I meet a "celebrity" lol) We're not on social media but you know where to find us 😉 We're trying not to get eaten alive by the swarms of mosquitoes!
Great meeting you as well! How long are you here? Maybe we'll come by tomorrow if you're around. 👍 -Howard
Also, feel free to email us since you aren't on other social @gmail.com

Oh you guys I’m so sorry this happened! Thank you for the real ness, Katelyn your such a trooper! Great job on this vid ❤️xoxo
Hi Daphne! ❤ Oh thank you so much, gotta share the good with the bad. That's life, right!? Just have to keep moving forward. 🙂 Thank you for watching! -Katelyn
Glad you are better. Hope everything works out for everyone. ✌🏼
Thanks so much! Just taking it day by day and working on their behavior! We'll definitely keep everyone posted. -Katelyn
Love the video glad you recovered.
Thank you so much!! -Katelyn
Summit County CO is our home. We missed this vid cause we were traveling in our 2006 Sprinter. Next time you get back into tge CO high-country, beers on us at The Bakers' Brewery.
I’ve been in your place. I had an abscess on my chest on vacation in pa last year. We needed to go immediately to urgent card to have it drained and then antibiotics and packing every other day. It stinks 😷 hopefully they can get under control 👍🏻✅. Be safe
Hi Kyle, oh gosh... that sounds awful! Hopefully you've healed up. My arm is all better now except for soreness in my wrist. Thanks so much for the well wishes! -Katelyn
Katelyn, glad you are better! Great folks at SMC and the Dog House, we board our Cavaliers there (the Dog House that is, not SMC.)
Hi Steven! Oh, we just loved the Dog House. How cool that you board there!! They were so great with the pups. And yes, the staff at SMC was incredible too! Thanks so much for watching. -Katelyn
glad you are okay! you are both amazing! wish you all the best, keep safe on your journey! ALLAH will always bless you because of your good heart!
Thank you!! ♥️ We've made a lot of progress with the pups and I'm all healed up now! 🙌
That energy is coming from you guys. So sounds like things aren't all happy and blissful .
Hi you guys! Listen, so sorry about the dog bite. OUCH! Anyway, my hubby asked whether you have a Trickle Start (a trickle charge) for your house battery. It has really changed our “Lemm Luck” with dead or dying batteries! Check into them!
Hi Virginia! We don't have a trickle start for the chassis battery, but the house battery is always charging from the solar on the roof. Also, if our chassis battery ever got so low/dead we can "jump" the battery with a button to start up from the house batteries. Definitely have a trickle charger for the chassis on the list, you're right it's a great upgrade! Thanks for watching. 👍 -Howard
My dog could be scout's brother. Almost identical. This situation has happened to me.
When walking on the beach, another dog ( pit bull ) was up ahead fetching a stick the owner was throwing into the water.
Scotty ( my dog ) ran ahead and joined in. I asked the owner if the other dog was "ok" with other dogs, she said yeah. They were fine for a while, then the other dog decided it was game over and turned on my dog. It was full on and i had to try separating them as the pitty had a mouthful of his skin mid spine. Anyway, i wound up with two holes in my hand and Scotty had four. It was straight into the salt water and my hand bled a lot which was probably a good thing. No infection followed. If the pitty had bitten deeper my dog might not have the use of his back legs. Not sure which one bit me. Probably Scotty.
Oh my goodness, that is so scary! Especially when it's a dog you don't know. So glad you and Scotty were ok and there was no infection. Dog fights are terrifying! -Katelyn
So sorry you had to go thru that. Real bummer. I so glad you recovered well.As far as the dogs they are a constant job but a labor of love. Please be well and next time wear a glove. LOL
Haha, thanks Bruce! I need some of those tough dog trainer suits they wear. If only I could snap my fingers and have them on! lol It definitely is a bummer, lots of tears over the past few weeks but working hard to fix these problems. We just love them so much. 💓 -Katelyn
So glad the infection cleared up and this video had a happy ending! I used to watch the TV show, "The Dog Whisperer" with Cesar Milan on Nat Geo, but I quickly realized that he solved 99% of dog behavioral problems with good, ol' exercise (the dogs exercising -- not Cesar!).
Well-exercised dogs are too tired to fight, it seems. Cesar would put dogs on a treadmill and they'd just walk themselves to exhaustion. Don't know if you can fit a treadmill on a Class B/C, though!
Wow!
Thanks god you are ok she said I’m sorry mom 😍
Thank you Lynn! She has said sorry a lot, she felt bad and gave me lots of cuddles! ❤
I love you guys . I have watched you for a long time. It seems to me that since you got scout that you take him out more than the other 2 dogs and favor him and the other dogs probably don't like it
Hi Scott! Aw, thank you so much!! So glad you've enjoyed watching our videos. We take Piper and Ella out with Scout all the time, we just don't always record it. 😉 The dogs are very much treated equally, but have problems with redirected aggression. Hoping we can all work through it! -Katelyn
I had to break up a fight between my dog and my neighbor's dog and my dog had punctured me so bad I just had 10 stitches in my pinky and now I'm really infected unfortunately. Hoping for the best here and hoping the antibiotic pills are going to work
One thing I would have liked to see if how you should have treated the bite when it first happened.
Thanks so much for watching, glad you found us! We did treat the bite immediately, and rushed to an urgent care as soon as it happened as we mentioned at the start of the video. Regardless, you should always start antibiotics for any dog bite, simply cleaning it at home won't help with potential infection. Unfortunately, the initial prescription wasn't working, and as you saw it required hospitalization. Thanks again for watching, hope you'll continue on the journey with us! -Howard
I am watching this with an infected dog bite. I feel your pain
Oh no!!! I am so sorry to hear that... it's terrible. I hope you get better soon. Sending you positive vibes! ❤ -Katelyn
Newstate Nomads just got my last iv amazing how such a small hole can cause such a large infection
Well least now I have another video I can make.
First Katelyn, glad you’re healthy and safe! Dog bites are no bueno. I just don’t get why they gave you Amoxicillin, that’s the kiddy aspirin of antibiotics. Also Howard, you’re a good man, taking care of your mrs while she was in the hospital like that :) Lastly, you guys have a solid pack, it’s going to be alright!!
Thank you SO much! Definitely learned a valuable lesson, I couldn't believe how quickly the infection spread. No kidding...those antibiotics were no match. I was so thankful for the stronger stuff and that it worked. Howard really is great, I'm so lucky to have him! Hoping we can get our little pack back on track soon! -Katelyn :)
Unlike people animal canines are long and sharp and dirty. They push the debris deep and then when tooth comes out the wound seals keeping debris and so infection inside the wound. The heat, moisture accelerates the infection. A surface wipe is useless. The wound has to be cleaned if antibiotics are slow to get. You did good, the dog has good family who won't give up. Well done. Remember though even happy dogs in tight spaces can cause issues.stay safe.
Hi Len! Exactly, and it got nasty fast. Even after washing it out at Urgent Care. There's just so much bacteria in their mouths. Thanks so much for the kind words, we're definitely doing everything we can to improve the situation, but you're right. The space definitely elevates it! -Katelyn
i agree with the trainer, look at lee asher he has 10 plus dogs and as many are elderly he often gets new dogs when the older ones pass, he never has any trouble because if he would be the Alpha in a village of alphas, he tells his old dogs the new dog is family and treat them good and it works
Polly, great point! We've definitely had a lot of improvements in the months after working with the trainer. We weren't able to include everything from our time with him, but another issue we have is that Piper and Ella are from the same litter. This is an unbreakable bond, and we have been working hard on the relationships between all three dogs. So far, so good! Thanks for watching. 👍 -Howard
Can doctors tell you what kind of bacteria it is?
Are all these dogs fixed neutered? that will reduce the aggression...
Hi Lauren, yes, all our dog are neutered. Thanks for watching! -Howard
I used to take that same drug for acne decades ago. If you're out in the sun a lot, watch out for hives!
Thanks for the warning, Greg! They warned me about the sun too, I was out one day talking on the phone for about 30 mins and got burnt. It's no joke! -Katelyn
I have had my share of dog bites over the years, mainly from just rough play with my dogs. One thing I do is immediately wash out the bite with soap and water and then put hydrogen peroxide on it, followed by iodine solution. And of course, keep up to date on tetanus shots.
Did they put you on vancomycin?
Oh no. Not good.
Sorry for all of you.
The better news is you had good medical care when you needed it.
And now a professional dog person to help you.
Aggression between dogs is serious. And can lead to what happened to you. We stopped going to the dog park. Too many unpredictable situations. And unknown dogs.
Not in any way blaming Scout. You guys are so gentle and kind.
We have 2 dogs. They have their moments with aggression though. One is a rescue dog. Came to us as an adult. The other a very spoiled Airedale.
The breeder taught me any growling is not cute. I intervene as soon as any sign of aggression shows itself. We're okay after 7 years. You'll get there.
Hi Diego, thank you for watching and commenting! You're right... the medical care was top notch and I meant it, nurses really are amazing. It's so hard because Scout definitely was really submissive for a while and then Ella & Piper began ganging up on her and she started fighting back to defend herself. Definitely a scary escalation, but really hoping we can continue to make progress! We only go to the dog park if there's a small area we can be alone. Our 3 are all fine together outside and love playing together that way which is even more frustrating. But it's a work in progress, for sure! 💓 -Katelyn
Cujo Scout bit momie? Bad cujo! Well I’m glad Kaitlyn got better, but Kaitlyn if the dog is up-to-date on their shots why would a bite get infected? did you have some kind of pre-existing condition where your immune system wasn’t as strong as it should be, do you take all your vitamins?
Great question, Gary! Just because they're up to date on their shots doesn't mean their mouths still don't carry bacteria. 😣 The shots keep you from developing things like rabies, but there's always a risk of infection because bacteria enters your body. Scary stuff!
Newstate Nomads well I’m glad all is well! No more crying! There’s no crying in RVing.
Haha, we need a sticker that says that! 😄😆
Newstate Nomads well u guys have “mad” skills, create one. Then pass them out to your friends! 👌🏼
Guy Aberle, my oldest son 4 was very jealous of his younger 9 month year old brother. He bit his younger brother on his hand causing the skin to break. It got infected. According to science a dogs mouth has less bacteria than a human mouth does. Fortunately my youngest sons bite only required a antibiotic ointment. The oldest son, was disciplined per my Pediatricians advice. Next time he bites your youngest son. Bite him back but do not break the skin. All it took was once. Now my oldest is 40. So sometimes a taste of your own medicine works wonders.
Have you ever heard that you should not get in the middle of a dog fight. I have had 3 dogs and they fought but to stop it I used to yell or a loud whistle would stop the fight.... I hope you get better soon. Also know that Vets are out for the Ka-Chin and so is doctors. They will make a thing big for the sake of $$$$. I am sure Scout is sorry for what she did.
Oh yes, a thousand times. I reacted in the moment and wasn't thinking. Definitely paid the price and learned a valuable lesson. (and yes, have the doctor/hospital bill to show for it! You're right about that!) Scout is very sorry and we're all working on improving. Thanks so much for watching, Diana! -Katelyn
Katelyn, I'm 61. When I was 9....a long, long time ago...lol, I was running across my neighbors yard to get to my friends yard to play on her swings with her. I didn't know but the night before the next door neighbor bought a German Shepherd. His name, Apache. He took off running after me and bit the biggest thing he could grab.....my buttocks. I was so scared. I got to my friends yard, my little summer flour sack dress torn and I had top and bottom teeth puncture marks on my tushie. My friends Mom administered first aide and phoned my Mother. She came and got me, and called the local Sheriff. He went to the home where the dog lived and asked about shot papers. They said we do not have any shot papers. I was 3 hours before having to get the first shot in my belly for a dog with no rabies shot when the dogs previous owner found them. A sigh of huge relief. The dog was at 11 months on it's yearly shot. Whew, a close call for me. I too got a infection. Took antibiotics and spent a lot of time not sitting. I'm grateful to God that you're okie and the fur babies are working hard towards getting along. ❤
OH MY GOODNESS! You poor thing... I can only imagine how painful that was in that area, knowing how this little bite felt on my wrist. And to not know if the dog had shots for a while... so glad they found that paperwork. That's so terrifying. And you were so little 😰 The bacteria from their mouths can be so bad, it's so easy for infection to set in. I'm definitely on the mend, and we really hope that we can continue to make progress... it's definitely stressful. Thank you so much for the well wishes, and for sharing your story. 💓 -Katelyn
wow Im 60 and had the same thing happen when I was 9 , couldn't sit for a week and remember it so well.
Use a spray bottle with water to breakup a dog fight..you can add vinager if needed..
I wish I can find a dog in need of a mother so that I could adopt it!!
😔😔😔
Thank you Lilliana 💓
I follow you on Instagram via @theDodo story. I am glad that Katelyn is making a good recovery. I hope you work out the issues with the dogs. How about some tips for your viewers: What did Katelyn do wrong in breaking up the dog fight (other than offering her wrist as a chew toy)? In hindsight, what should Katelyn have done under the circumstances?
Hi Justin! So glad you found us through Scout's Dodo story. That is a GREAT point... we didn't really discuss what we should have done in that situation. And truth be told, we're still trying to make sure we handle it better moving forward. I definitely shouldn't have grabbed them up near their mouths... the trainer suggested grabbing them from their hind legs, loud noises, even squirting water. The key is to hopefully catch it before it escalates to that point, but sometimes it happens so fast. We can certainly include that in a future update video, thanks for the advice! -Katelyn
Wow, after that lady basically rescued that dog, this is her rewards, animals will always be animals
Too many dogs in a small RV. For me one dog is too many even though I love dogs
It’s your brown dog that’s a little bullie
To much drama.... GOODBYE!
