It does take a short amount of initiation to the DCT technology. Understandably Manual transmissions being tactile and self-controllability are what most like about shifting. Slow speed maneuvers utilizing the friction zone are much easier executed with a clutch. The DCT requires a balance of throttle and brake technique which requires some practice, but it can be done. Honda understands this and why the “walking mode” was created. Genius! Yup, for those small space/parking lot maneuvers. Another Honda genius, is the Reverse mode, especially handy for those high crowned roads you pulled into at a rest stop nose first and just realized it. For me, this newest generation Gold Wing is the best looking Gold Wing hands down. Off the line the bikes rips. No big Touring bike on the market stays a DCT from a complete stop. With it’s Formula One style paddle shifting it’s sublime. Honda known for building legendary engines also trickles down from their successful Formula One program. As well Honda MotoGP and Motocross bikes are always on the finishers podium. Honda’s whole power sports line is solid. Including it’s aircraft. The DCT’s has some advantages of which you mentioned, in stop-n-go traffic, I’ll also add it allows your brain to focus on other aspects and details of actual riding. Like what gear you need to be in. Or torquey up and downshifts which at times creates “helmet knock” with your passenger are gone. The tech and features are all on another level. Lexus level. The bike isn’t for everyone, no bike ever is, and why there are choices. Once you understand how to effectively paddle shift this bike you realize there is plenty of power on tap. Check out Gbewingingit’s YT. He rows pretty spiced through the gears on his 18 DCT Airbag through heavy NY commuter traffic. Sounds like a Porsche with that flat six. Ride safe and ride often. Whatever you ride. Because any day on two wheels, is a good day. Peace.
Agree across the board! And I just watched a video of a guy run his Sportster into the back of a cab in NYC traffic - what a coincidence! 😂 I’ll check out that video though - I’m always fascinated with paddle shifters, so would be interesting to see. Both versions of the Gold Wing were really nice, and I was definitely impressed by the DCT. I’m sure an experienced rider could learn to work that throttle as you mentioned and really enjoy it. And who knows - I already have bad arthritis in my neck, so it could be just a matter of time until it develops in other bits and I’ll be on a DCT myself! And I totally agree about reverse. The first weekend I had my Chieftain I parked nose-first in a parking spot and didn’t realize it was on a slight decline. If I hadn’t been able to make a right u-turn into the empty spots next to me, I would have been doomed! 😂😂 Great comment and hope everyone reads - especially the end! ✌️
Hey, you can still be a Champion while being comfortable…not actually doing anything other than holding on! 😂 Not as splashy as your new Xmas present though - how’s the new wheels?
Yeah, Demos are nice appetizers, but you can only learn so much about a bike that way. I recall them discussing that a bit. How accurate does it get over time?
@@DMVSoloRider IMO so take it with a grain of salt. Tour mode will always be low rpm till you need it but it will drop down a gear quicker with less throttle turn. Sports mode feels near perfect for shift points when you want it aggressive. Econ will always be econ and put you in 7th @ about 40 mph. Side note, using the paddles to change the gear is always useful in both teaching the bike and if you feel the need for a different gear. One honda aftermarket part I have installed is the foot shifter for the DCT. I never use it for up-shifting but when I need a quick downshift its perfect and worth the cost IMO.
Interesting. Thanks for the download. I probably should have played around with the paddle shifters a bit just to get a sense of them, but I wanted to keep my DCT experience “pure.” Lol
Once you get over going for the clutch lever at junctions and the down shifts they do what it says on the tin "I'll not mention the Marmite thing😂" good review👍
Thanks! I won’t mention Marmite either, but I will say that I kinda expected a built-in Honda foot and butt massager to kick in, and I was almost shocked that didn’t happen! 🤷♂️😂
One of your best…nice work DMV!! I was hoping for a solid, unwavering endorsement of the DCT….but you rated it in 2nd place. If you were getting a 2nd bike….would this be your choice or the Manual GW?
Thanks man! I think it has the 2nd best fairing/windshield for protecting against buffeting (Road Glide #1 and Challenger #3), but it’s not a bike I’d buy just yet. Maybe down the road if I develop arthritis in my left foot or hand a DCT would be a good plan, but I love shifting too much to go DCT. 😂 If I was getting a new cruiser my top non-Challenger choice would have to be the Rocket 3. All that torque, sick looks, and based on one test ride I felt like it could be an awesome touring bike! Overall though, the Challenger still reigns supreme! I actually talk a bit about that in next week’s video! How awesome it is after riding many different bikes to get back on yours and know it’s “the one?!” ✌️
sorry to say, but new Goldwing has not so much charm as my 2010 Goldwing, children waving to me and people looking to my shiny bike. the new one is a little bit boring. DCT I would have😊😊😊😊
Yeah, I felt like there was just something missing overall. Definitely impressed by the DCT, but there wasn’t anything about the bike that really excited me, and I’m easily excitable by motorcycles! 😂🤷♂️
I bought a 2022 Goldwing Dct but have to wait to go for a ride up here in the U.P. This was a nice ride.
🤞for you that you can get out soon!

This has to be one of my favorite bikes I’ve ever tested. It just doesn’t do it for me in terms of style and looks but outside of that, I loved it.
All it really needs is a couple extra wheels and a roof and it would be perfect! 😂✌️
My 2019 GW DCT is the best bike I've ever owned!
I’ve yet to hear from anyone who rides a GW - DCT or manual - who doesn’t absolutely love it! 👍
Just a FYI, the shift points on the DCT will change and adjust depending on your ride style. That's something you cannot experience with just a demo.
