We never got the Smart fortwo diesel because regs killed em. I believe that CAFE is to blame for them trying to fund all these ridiculous abominations. See, that dumb truck is probably selling at a loss. All these companies axed their dirt cheap models. Mitsubishi mirage has gone up from $10500 to $16900. And to get that deep ocean pearl, you have to buy a dumb CVT. CAFE ruined manuals too. I absolutely despise CVT push belt and ev car's lithium batteries. Since conventional "I.C.E." powered vehicles use a by-product of the running engine to provide cabin heat, It makes ZERO sense to have an electric car anywhere where the temp regularly goes anywhere near freezing. I live in Pittsburgh, PA (USA) where yeah, we get muggy summers. But to me A/C is still a luxury. (I have had MANY cars with no A/C!) But not using a heater is a deal breaker, it gets cold AF here in winter. Losing 20% of range for heat is not viable. No electric car for me! I see less of a future for electric cars in Canada than I do for Pittsburgh.

Agreed. I have a PHEV SUV co. car (BMX X3 30e xdrive, max e-range is 44 km at start) and travel 21 Km to/from work each day; I fully consume the battery on average, each day. Speed is never above 80 Kmph (45mph) and I pickup about 8 Km in additional battery range while going downhill (to work). I usually have between 30-34Km of e-range when I leave from work to go home. Full L1 charge can be done overnight (~ 8 hours). This type of driving gets me about 87 mpg (2.7 L/100 Km). Considering gas where I live (Switzerland) is about 2x the cost compared to the US, on avg; in terms of my monthly fuel costs it would be akin to getting around 44mpg in the US with a mid-sized gas-powered SUV. Not bad!
However, this is a leased co. car (under managed service). I would never own this type of car for fear that the BMW tech (+BMW PHEV complexity) would require expensive service outside of warranty. Four years and goodbye. If I were to buy a PHEV on my own dime...TOYOTA or LEXUS. Nothing else.
If I usually travelled long distances or needed heavy hauling power...DIESEL.

Reason is partners in Korea, who supplies electric batteries and equipment to GM. Hunday/Kia make electric cars too. Batteries supplied by LG or Samsung. GM competes for the batteries with Hunday/kia, I guess GM just lost competition. No wonder technology level of Hunday/Kia mich higher than GM. Sad story, GM had to start own batteries production like Tesla did. GM managers put billions of dollars into self driving technology instead.

My husband was a supervisor at Jeep for close to 4 years in the assembly plant and one thing I can tell you is the electric vehicles are not dependable nor reliable and actually sales for electric vehicles has stalled and is actually on a downward trend. The chargers are not efficient you cannot get the mileage that they say because so many things affected. The car is way almost nothing because they don't have a engine that can pull the weight so if you get into an accident a lot of times the car is toast. They're expensive and unreliable because they're unreliable they become expensive. The average battery price is $2,000 at its low end. Jim is right in what they're saying they're doing. Scalantis stopped the electric vehicles at the one facility because it's not cost effective. Not to mention the batteries for electric vehicles have far more carbon produced than anywhere near what a gas car emits. Anybody can look that up.

While my electric bill has increased slightly due to home charging my EV, around $18-$20 a month, my electric rate has not increased at all. In East Tennessee at least, there is no relationship between the amount of electricity consumed and the per kwh cost of electricity on a residential account. Perhaps Scotty is referring to a bill increase, not a rate increase. And, home charging is about as good as it gets. For the ICE folks, think of it as a gas pump in your garage without the smell.
As far as time to charge on Level 2 at home is concerned, I don't think Scotty sleeps at all, but I sleep around 8 hrs/night, plenty of time for a full charge for the next day.

I have a 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV and it is great. It is fast, nimble, easy to drive, easy to park, and save money. In California, you can switch your utility to charge less from midnigth to 6am in the morning. I pay only 9 cents per KW from 12am to 6am and I programmed my charging to start at 12am. I ended up save $150 per month on fuel and paying only $40 for electricity. There is almost zero maintenance and no oil charge, no smog check. It is cheaper than drive a similar size car such as a Toyota Corolla and feel good not polluting the air.

That’s $90 a month for the next 20 years with a 20 year warranty. It’s been a lot easier on her finances. Scotty's example was in Rhode Island. (3.5 solar kwh/m2day ave) You're in Florida (5-6 solar kwh/m2day ave) Subsidies vary. My question is what does your utility sell electricity for and what does it buy your solar electricity for. This is the subsidy and affects the economy of having solar. My local area used to buy solar at a rate 4x what it sold electricity for. A year ago California was buying it at 25-35 cents but threatening to lower it to 3 cents because that is what the big solar farms were selling it for. Utility/ government subsidies play a consideration.

14¢ per kilowatt/hour? Where? On average I pay 42¢ in San Diego. Yes, it is in a tier system, and depends upon what pricing system you choose. A person can be doing well with how much electricity they use, but if they were to buy an electric car, it would throw them up in a plan from below the use baseline where electricity can be as low as 41¢, up to the higher tier which is 61¢ per Kw/hr (this is considered to be nonessential "luxury usage"). In one plan, if an emergency reduction in use is called, but a customer doesn't reduce usage, they can be charged $1.16 per Kw/hr. This mostly happens during heatwaves and usage increases. This is also when wildfires happen. What if you need to charge your car in case you need to evacuate an area? Oh, but we are all supposed to be good little peasants and ride the bus or a bicycle.
