@@mistahshorthitter - love your content- am 74 and now taking up the game after a decades long hiatus so you have helped my mental game as well as swing
MSH Shot 88 today! First time below 90. The traffic light system and the “ never, never……never double bogey from 40-60 yds” was what did it for me. Still did some stupid stuff but way less than usual. Thanks so much! You’re the best. G
This is now going to be my go-to recommendation to watch for anyone who wants to break 90. I mean, hell, I'm a 3 handicap and I 'm doing all this stuff on the course! (I'm also a bit of a short hitter.) Such great, simple, solid advice, and cleanly and succinctly presented!
Great video and Great advice! I followed another guy on TH-cam and tok his advice: If you try to break 90 or Even 85 you need 5 or 6 Clubs including Putter! I am 74, my drive is 180yards and I break 90 all The time😂 For most of us it is s matter of hitting it 150-175 and practice put/chip/pitch. Could you make a video along those Lines? Please😊 Rgds Arne, hit it Even shorter😂
Absolutely fantastic and a couple ingenious tips there. One of the best tips I ever got was while I was in the dentist chair and we were talking golf. He said, "If I showed up at the golf course and somebody offered me a chance to sign a scorecard with 18 bogey's, I'd sign it in an instant!" He added, "Think of it this way, 5x9 is 45 (or x 18 is 90). When you think of it that way, a little course management and keeping the ball in play and breaking 90 doesn't seem so tough!
Breaking 90 is my goal for this next season. Started playing a decade ago, got to the point where I was almost breaking 90, and two things happened--first, the course that I played on consistently (also probably the easiest course in the area) closed, and second, I fell down the rabbit-hole of TH-cam golf coaching and started second-guessing EVERYTHING I was doing on the course, and I went from averaging bogeys to double-and triple-bogeys and an average of one melt-down hole out of every six I played (where I was scoring beyond triple-bogey, and a lot of times, I was just picking up my ball at ten strokes). I also discovered that I've lived with undiagnosed ADHD all my life, which shows itself on the golf course with me getting impatient and unfocused every so often (which was, I now realize, one of the big contributors to the meltdown holes). It's taken me six or seven years to get back to where I'm breaking 100 on what is, now, my "home course", my last round of the season I was down to 93 (that was almost a week ago...we've had six inches of snow fall since then so I don't expect to make it out to a course for another 3-4 months.) A lot of these tips, I'm already using. My short game is my Achilles' Heel, and a large part of that is maintaining the focus necessary to chip and putt effectively (I'm also about 50/50 on reading greens). I'll revisit this video again when courses open back up in the area!
these tips are invaluable to the majority of golfers, all great tips, I especially liked #12 Play your shot shape. Again hats off to Mistah Short (straight) hitter. keep em coming!!!
Hey MSH, I've been working on breaking 90, using your strategy tips and playing with the swing I have. Yesterday I shot 92 from the whites at Heron Lakes Greenback course, my best score yet this year. I was especially happy with my play on the par 5 13th, a dogleg right that then goes downhill to a slough and marshy area that guards the green. Six is a good score for me, and 7 or 8's not unheard of. I hit a 3 wood off the tee, popped it up about 150 yards. At least it was straight! This left me 300+ yards from the hole. I put that shot out of my mind and did not let it bother me. I then hit a 4 hybrid, and pulled it into the second cut, about 165 yards down the fairway. That left me about 150 yards across water to the green. Still, felt I could reach the green if I clubbed up. I hit another 4 hybrid. That shot ended up pin high, but 8 ft off the green in the second cut again, about 30 feet from the hole. I then chipped with my 5 hybrid to 2 feet and made the putt for par. So, par on a tricky hole for me using 3 or 4 tips from your videos. Thanks! Looking forward to messaging you when I shoot 89! James
Wow, these are great. Thinking I need to always get to the green in regulation is my biggest problem. On almost every hole, I would be FAR better off managing two lay-up shots and then having a nice pitch to the center of the green, and 2 putts for bogey. Instead, I blow a drive into the trees, pitch-out, blow a long iron into trouble, pitch from a bad lie to another bad lie, make it on the green and then 2 or 3 putt for a 7 or 8. And that's BEFORE the beer cart comes around...
You sold me on the Hy-wood. Picked one up last week. It’s a great 180 club for me. After doing some research on that club I was reading about the old Heavenwood witch was supposedly a 7 wood head on a 3 or 4 wood shaft. Hmmmm. I went to the attic and found my old G400 woods. I put the 7 Head on the 3 wood shaft. Guess what? It worked really well. Easy to hit high. Thanks for another great video. 68 and sunny in Indy today.
I'd definitely take 68 and sunny. Hovering around 48 here right now. I'm going to do a deep dive into the Hywood eventually. I have a ton of content coming and trying to figure out where to fit it in. I'm excited about some upcoming videos including "How to Reach your Golf Goals". Keep me posted on how the games going. Hoping for a GREAT golf season. Thank you for the support!
On most of my rounds, I am usually high 80’s to around 90. For the most part, it’s because I don’t manage my game very well and routinely commit the mistakes that you have pointed out in your tips. Thank you for these fantastic tips that really make sense.
A problem can be when you are playing for money, you go for it all the time, more so if you are playing in a club with a point system or for handicap. I do all three in a season.
So I have become a big fan of the traffic light approach and it’s paying off. I have a couple of 89s and a 90 in the last few weeks and it’s because I am making better decisions about when to go for it and when not to. That doesn’t mean always being conservative as I drove the green on a short par 4 that I always laid up on. There’s water to the right so you’d probably call it yellow but I aim left edge. Also birdied a par 5 yesterday that’s definitely a red light from the tee with a tight landing area. Hybrid, hybrid and 9 iron did the trick there. Keep generating the great videos. Mr. Slowly Getting Better at Golf out!
This is The BEST break 90 video I’ve seen. I shot 92 two days ago and 91 yesterday. I too go about 210 off the tee. I’m close but I do stupid stuff. Thank you MSH! This is one vid to watch multiple times in my shoes.! I only hope I can remember everything that you’ve said here while I’m out there trying to break 90😂
That means a lot to hear you say that! Make a note of the tips and try to focus on 2-3 of them as the situations come up during your round. Eventually, they will all become second nature to you. I planned on 10 tips but as I played I just gave you the things that are second nature to me during the round. I'm glad you enjoyed and much more to come!
That's my goal this year. Broke 90 only a couple of times, but I retired this winter and hope to play more than nine holes a week, which was the normal for the last ten years. Thanks for the work !
I am finally cracking 200 on my driver after a year and a half recovery from a major back surgery. I am consistently breaking 100 from around the 6000 yard tees. This is my next goal. I want to break 90 from the same tees before I try to move back to longer tees.
@@mistahshorthitter I like the tip about using a 5W instead of attempting a fairway shot with a 3W. I am also going to use my 6i more often to ensure more consistent contact and get me within a manageable distance on long par 4’s. Love the content, keep the good work!
Good stuff here. For me, literally adding 1 stroke to each hole's par on the scorecard was a huge help. It stopped me looking for 'par' and getting down when I made bogey. Bogey golf is 90, so if I made one adjusted birdie (natural par) and 17 pars (natural bogey) I shot 89. It's a mindset thing I know, but it works.
Great content!! I’m always trying to “play smart”, although sometimes you think you’re better than you really are and try a shot that goes terribly wrong. Live and learn!! Keep up the great work .
Great advice and tips. Don't let your ego get in the way of a good score. Practice those inside 100 yd pitch so important for us goofers. Maybe an illustrated range warm up session??
@@mistahshorthitter You’re welcome. I just found you a few days ago. I enjoy the ball reviews. I am currently looking at 6. I’m going to use the things I learned from you, because it’s logical to me, to decide on 1 and be consistent with it.
One of your all time best. Watched it twice. If I’m not reaching on a par 5, I’ll divide the remaining distance in two as a starting point. Once I know I could easily reach with two relaxed eight irons for instance, it just seems easier, though I might choose two different clubs ultimately.
Another very useful and inspirational video, MSH! Thank you!! Just broke 100 this month, and breaking 90 is my next goal for the rest of the year. The tips on your channel have definitely changed my mindset, and made playing this challenging game much more enjoyable.
One of the best decisions I made about what I keep in my bag was getting rid of my 15deg 3W, and replacing it with a 17deg. 2deg of loft doesn't sound like a lot, but it's a night-and-day difference for me. I still struggle for consistency with it, but unlike the 3W, I can actually get a decent shot off the deck. I don't think I ever got my 3W in the air outside of tee shots. Appreciate the advice! I'm hoping to put it into practice over the summer.
I have been playing golf 11 months and the last 3 months I am now struggling to break 90. I have shot a few 91-92 but mostly 94-96. Hopefully I can get out again soon to utilize these lessons👍
Hi just found your page subscribed now.. I like your thinking on how you do things all the time trying to reach greens in reg. Tomorrow will try someone this. Playing logic I'm a 35 handicapper better than that. With this kind of thing could help to get my handicap down. Ty pal
Didn’t have my best stuff today but still managed a 94 using these tips. Tip #1: played 17 holes with same ball before final drive ended in the woods. I’ll get there.
Great video and Tips, one tip I was taught about putting, lag putting especially, what ever break you see, allow TWICE as much break, by doing so, if you hit it too hard you end up just past the hole, if you don’t hit it hard enough you end up just short,,,, as you learn to control your speed, you can cut down on the break allowance,,,
@@mistahshorthitter also if you get a chance and want to nerd out in the golf world check out a forum called”The Hackers Paradise” lots of great giveaways and trips. It’s a real great group. I won a set or titleist irons with a fitting back in 2019 and I am still using them today!
I joined Hackers Paradise today. There was a discussion about my channel in a couple threads not sure if that was you or not. Seems like a good forum. Thank you!
Similar length to me except your longer with driver, your VERY straight and have a solid short game. Great tips to manage your way around the course. Cheers
Smart advice. Wondering if I should practice without gps or any distance aids to sharpen my sense of distance. Wondering if I should sometimes practice with fewer clubs to introduce creativity.
I wouldn't worry about not using gps. I think that actually helps you get a feel for distance control. I would experiment with taking fewer clubs it could help creativity and discover new ways to score.
Great video! I would enjoy a round with a calming influence and a reasoned approach. Sadly, I play with competitive friends, and there is no laying up.
3-23-24 91 today & i suck at driving hit some pulled irons shots, mid iron off tee on a par 4 instead of driver puts me in a better 2nd shot position instead of ball below my feet, i made bogey instead of dbl bogey 2x in a row, now i need a closer third shot
MSH, you might be a short hitter, but your short game is very tidy and despite your comments, I like your putting. I have finally realised the 100yard out is where my score bleeds. Thanks for the video's and keep them coming please.
A good short game (chipping and putting) can save your long game missteps! You can practice your short game anywhere! I agree, every shot you should visualize and/or focus on target, which will help with tempo! Thanks for the info.
Love this vid, thank you! Out of curiosity, would you consider playing two balls on 9 holes: one is a conservative strategy and the other more aggressive
Nice suggestion! Over multiple holes (probably over several rounds) you will be able to draw conclusions from actual stats which of the two strategies resulted in better scores. Good luck!
So I kid you not, I watched your video yesterday and broke 90 for the first time today. Thanks for all the great tips, I really appreciate them! I certainly haven’t caught all your videos but was thinking about other topics to cover and thought about one on different lies. Ball higher than feet, feet higher than ball, rear foot higher than front foot (downhill) front foot higher than back foot (uphill). Does any of that change in a trap? Thanks again!
That was really good advice: make the best of a bad round when you aren’t ‘on’ with your stroke. After all, you are playing golf, it’s all good, and when you play the next hole, you might be ok. Keep your head up, and remember, you have a guy(s) playing with you, and you should keep it upbeat and fun for them, too.
Would be cool if we had one of those GPS overviews on these shots, where you're playing from, and where you 're trying to play to so we can see the layout
So true! I'm a one man show producing 3 and a half videos a week so it's tough trying to put so much into one video. I do have video's on my channel that have the layout but I can not do it on every video. You might enjoy those videos more. This video is more about the tips than the actual shots. Thank you so much for watching!
I believe people in their seventies and handicap around 20-25 hits most drives around 175. Could you take your 4 hybrid, 7 iron, pw, sw and putter. To break 90? Will Get a lot of wies😊 Thank you! Arne from Norway (175 average drive, 22hcp)
Just shot a 95 with 42 on the front and a 53 on the back. Too many 3 putts on the back. Usually a 40 to 45 range so that 42 was on schedule but not that 53.. it’s all good, the game. Got to work on putting…
Another quick one on short game. If you have short sided yourself with hazard between you and the hole, always try and pitch or chip your ball with enough clubhead speed to clear the hazard and carry beyond the edge of the green, even if it means aiming well past the hole.
a Golf instructor told me one time...he held up a pitching wedge and gave me a rule of thumb... pitch the ball the length of the grip...and it will roll the length of the steel shaft ....then he did the same with a 8 iron...and said ....get it ?.... I used that technique on my way to a 17 handicap then to the average score of 85 .... the game was a lot more fun busting 90
tip #22 - don't play in the dark 😉. Couldn't agree more, no harm in purposefully playing short on a par 3 to avoid trouble, especially if the flag is at the front. Worse you are coming away with is a 4, and par still possible.
If you struggle with aiming and alignment, pick a spot a couple of feet in front of your ball in line with your target and imagine you are putting to that spot with whatever club you are about to hit. Helps narrow your focus and makes it easier to align your body Works wonders for me. Then just rip it !
So Important, on the long par 3's say over 175, if protected , I will play it like a par 4, My dad told me "Play for the bogie's and the pars will fall" Limit your mistakes. If us hackers add one stroke per hole and make par 90, we may help our head and not go for the TIGER shots all of the time.
Yep. Too many amateurs try to play golf like pros thinking their goal should be to hit every green on a par 3. On long par 3's if there is a stretch of pretty decent sized fairway in front of front bunkers or somewhere to bail out of trouble I'm going for it every time. If you look at scoring averages on those holes they are already over par so even if you miss short, pitch on to about 20 feet for par, miss the par putt and tap in for bogey you aren't giving shots away.
Agree fully. The opposite may apply on shorter par 3's with hazards in front and no real trouble over the green. Play percentage and take one club more where a well struck shot may roll a few feet off the back of the green.
Good stuff. I would add that at the range, 100 balls, only 5 should be the driver. 60-70 should be wedges, 9,8,7. The rest long clubs. If you dial in your swing, the driver is the easiest club in the bag. It's huge and forgiving, the target is the largest on the hole, and the lie is perfect and always flat. MSH should do a practice range video👍🏼
I'm not sure that works for anyone except maybe pros. I wish I could do that! I'd say playing your shots away from trouble works better but I'm not a pro so it's only advice. Hope at least one of these 21 tips helps you score at least 1 shot better! Thank you for watching!
Thanks!

Great advice and tips. Don't let your ego get in the way of a good score. Practice those inside 100 yd pitch so important for us goofers.
Maybe an illustrated range warm up session??
I like that idea!
Love your content and how you convey the information. You remind me of an old Senior Chief I Knew in the Navy. This is how I imagine him now.
Thank you so much for the support!
@@mistahshorthitter You’re welcome. I just found you a few days ago. I enjoy the ball reviews. I am currently looking at 6. I’m going to use the things I learned from you, because it’s logical to me, to decide on 1 and be consistent with it.
@@jetsjunkie3619 I've got a few I like in different price ranges. I may do my 5 favorite balls video.
Great video and tips many thanks
Thank you!
One of your all time best. Watched it twice. If I’m not reaching on a par 5, I’ll divide the remaining distance in two as a starting point. Once I know I could easily reach with two relaxed eight irons for instance, it just seems easier, though I might choose two different clubs ultimately.
That sir is an excellent strategy! I'm excited to put another one of these together this Spring. Thank you so much!
Yes, generally good strategy to lay up to your favourite and confident wedge distance.
Another very useful and inspirational video, MSH! Thank you!! Just broke 100 this month, and breaking 90 is my next goal for the rest of the year. The tips on your channel have definitely changed my mindset, and made playing this challenging game much more enjoyable.
Thank you for watching! Happy to help!
15 degrees vs 17 is a HUGE difference off a tight fairway lie. That is a great decision!
I have been playing golf 11 months and the last 3 months I am now struggling to break 90. I have shot a few 91-92 but mostly 94-96. Hopefully I can get out again soon to utilize these lessons👍
Thank you for watching. I'll have more on breaking scoring barriers in the near future.
Nice video. Thanks for posting. Great tips.
Thank you so much for watching!
Watching your vids up here in Canada in Jan, Feb, March reminds me of how bad it sucks for a golfer to be living in Canada
Thank you for watching!
Hi just found your page subscribed now.. I like your thinking on how you do things all the time trying to reach greens in reg. Tomorrow will try someone this. Playing logic I'm a 35 handicapper better than that. With this kind of thing could help to get my handicap down.
Ty pal
Thank you! I may do a break 100 video also. I appreciate the support!
Excellent video, terrific advice, and valuable tips.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Didn’t have my best stuff today but still managed a 94 using these tips. Tip #1: played 17 holes with same ball before final drive ended in the woods. I’ll get there.
That's great Lee! Keep it in play!
Great video really enjoyed it thanks
Glad to hear it!
Great advice!
Thank you!
Always DO THANKS !!
Thank you!
Great video and Tips, one tip I was taught about putting, lag putting especially, what ever break you see, allow TWICE as much break, by doing so, if you hit it too hard you end up just past the hole, if you don’t hit it hard enough you end up just short,,,, as you learn to control your speed, you can cut down on the break allowance,,,
That's a good one! Thank you!
Excellent! Thanks!
Thank you!
Thanks you!! Inspirational:)

Coach Lockey just did a video about removing the 3 wood from the bag. Great video, thanks for doing these. 😊
I need to watch a little more Coach Lockey. He seems pretty genuine. Thank you for watching!

Similar length to me except your longer with driver, your VERY straight and have a solid short game. Great tips to manage your way around the course. Cheers

Another great video. Good info.

Just watching you swing is tip enough, but thanks for the rest of the lesson😊!
Thank you!

Great video 📸
Glad you liked it
Smart advice.
Thank you for watching! Beat them by laying up!
I feel for you!
3-23-24 91 today & i suck at driving hit some pulled irons shots, mid iron off tee on a par 4 instead of driver puts me in a better 2nd shot position instead of ball below my feet, i made bogey instead of dbl bogey 2x in a row, now i need a closer third shot
I like the way you are thinking about strategy! You can do it!
MSH, you might be a short hitter, but your short game is very tidy and despite your comments, I like your putting. I have finally realised the 100yard out is where my score bleeds. Thanks for the video's and keep them coming please.
@@stevenorr3196 Thank you!
A good short game (chipping and putting) can save your long game missteps! You can practice your short game anywhere! I agree, every shot you should visualize and/or focus on target, which will help with tempo! Thanks for the info.
Thank you! All good points!
Some good tips, I will use some of them...
That's great!
A must read book is How to Break 90. It pretty much mirrors what you are saying. Changed m6 approach to golf.
Thank you!
Love this vid, thank you!
Out of curiosity, would you consider playing two balls on 9 holes: one is a conservative strategy and the other more aggressive
Great suggestion! I'll try to do it this week!
Nice suggestion! Over multiple holes (probably over several rounds) you will be able to draw conclusions from actual stats which of the two strategies resulted in better scores. Good luck!
I have done that late in the day when no one else is around. Conservative wins every time.
Smart, skilled golfer. Wonder where he plays.
Thank you for watching!
@@keithp5568 Awesome job!! Thank you for the ideas!
Great video Mr, strait hitt......I mean Short Hitter 🙂
Wish I was straight all the time!
Thank you James!
Another good video 👍, just out of curiosity what is your actual handicap?
We are in the off season but I'm guessing about a 4.5 right now. I plan on working at it this year and getting it lower. Thank you for watching!
I believe people in their seventies and handicap around 20-25 hits most drives around 175. Could you take your 4 hybrid, 7 iron, pw, sw and putter. To break 90?
Will Get a lot of wies😊
Thank you!
Arne from Norway
(175 average drive, 22hcp)
Sure can!
Just shot a 95 with 42 on the front and a 53 on the back. Too many 3 putts on the back. Usually a 40 to 45 range so that 42 was on schedule but not that 53.. it’s all good, the game. Got to work on putting…
More putting videos on the way!
Something just hit me. Do you do the vocals on the rap? The woodruff video set me off 😊
Yes I write and record all the vocals
@@mistahshorthitter That is so cool.
@@dhovious6247 Eventually will do an entire album about golf!
Great videos subbed are you in Chicago
Yes, South Suburbs. Thank you!
Another quick one on short game. If you have short sided yourself with hazard between you and the hole, always try and pitch or chip your ball with enough clubhead speed to clear the hazard and carry beyond the edge of the green, even if it means aiming well past the hole.
Thank you for watching!
What is your favorite scoring tip?
Thank you. Lots of common sense here.
Thank you so much for watching!
You have a great short game
Thank you David!
a Golf instructor told me one time...he held up a pitching wedge and gave me a rule of thumb... pitch the ball the length of the grip...and it will roll the length of the steel shaft ....then he did the same with a 8 iron...and said ....get it ?.... I used that technique on my way to a 17 handicap then to the average score of 85 .... the game was a lot more fun busting 90
That's a cool way to look at it! Thank you for watching!
That sounds a bit simplistic. Rule of 12 or rule of 13 may be somewhat more precise for chipping?
tip #22 - don't play in the dark 😉. Couldn't agree more, no harm in purposefully playing short on a par 3 to avoid trouble, especially if the flag is at the front. Worse you are coming away with is a 4, and par still possible.
Thank you much!
I wanted to get this video done badly. I'm lucky I could even see the green by the end of the round!
Yes, especially for short hitters on long par 3 holes where your fairway wood or long hybrid will either not carry the green or hold the green.
@@zazhou Thank you!
If you struggle with aiming and alignment, pick a spot a couple of feet in front of your ball in line with your target and imagine you are putting to that spot with whatever club you are about to hit. Helps narrow your focus and makes it easier to align your body Works wonders for me. Then just rip it !
I love it!
Taking your medicine is a big key. It's so much better to get it back in play and play for a bogie. It's just one stroke...same as a 1" tap in.
That is EXTREMELY important! Thank you for watching!
@@mistahshorthitter I play my long par 4's like your par 3 example. Just lay up and try to get up and down. Avoid the double and move on.
@@brianmcpeake2509 That's an extremely effective strategy. When I play tournaments on longer courses I've had to do that myself.
I shot an 89 last week!
@@bodacious2276 Congratulations!! Keep up the good work!!
That's wisdom! Thank you for watching!
@@conservakid85 Exactly right! Thank you!
Agree fully. The opposite may apply on shorter par 3's with hazards in front and no real trouble over the green. Play percentage and take one club more where a well struck shot may roll a few feet off the back of the green.
@@zazhou Thank you for watching!
Good idea!
Tip: be great at hitting the ball where you want it to go.
I'm not sure that works for anyone except maybe pros. I wish I could do that! I'd say playing your shots away from trouble works better but I'm not a pro so it's only advice. Hope at least one of these 21 tips helps you score at least 1 shot better! Thank you for watching!
Also play to your strengths.
Great advice!
The only “short” club I see you hit is driver. Everything else is above average length IMO.
