    Speed was it's only selling point. Couldn't carry much payload. Speed made the life of airframe short as it couldn't take up the abuse. Used only for recon.
    It's successor Mig -31 is a better product. Mig-31 probably has the highest flight ceiling for any aircraft. And it's also supersonic.

  • @virajkharat1515
    @virajkharat1515 2 ปีที่แล้ว +97

    The increasing number of strategic bombers operated by America such as the b-52 'stratofortress' posed a big threat to the USSR. Moreover, the Americans testing supersonic strategic bomber with high ceiling made the Soviets nervous. They were in need of an interceptor that would be extremely fast, have high service ceiling and could be produced in large amount in small time, thus giving birth to the MiG-25 'Foxbat'. This also explains why the MiG-25 wasn't made of titanium and was welded by hand. This jet, due to lack of information, terrorised the West, thinking the Soviets have made an advanced and capable fighter similar to the designs of then under development F-15. Also the russian pilot landed in Japan on purpose and not because of engine failure. He was later granted an US citizenship. The MiG-25 'Foxbat' set up a number of records over the upcoming years, such as reaching a top speed of mach 3+, which was way faster than any American Fighter.

      @@RiteshKumar-gx7uz It cannot be claimed 'engineering failure' cause it wasn't complete garbage. It was made with specific role, which was to intercept American supersonic bomber (which was under development then but was never inducted). The aircraft was capable of doing the job. Also the many defects were because the aircraft was designed and manufactured very quickly which gave a lot of chances for error. But the aircraft was very capable for what it was designed.

      ... It's a junk actually.
      When Americans teared it apart , they found so many mistakes in the design. An aircraft to be able to fly at 2.5+ mach must be made up of tough metal like , titanium. But this one is actually a stainless steel.
      Second flaw they found was in engine , Soviet actually took inspiration from an engine of a Cruze missile and the problem is that , this plane was not flying but moving via thrust . Just like a missile it lacked the capability to maneuver.

    A little bit of unsavory facts - The Mig 25 was built as an interceptor to counter the threat of strategic bombers and reconnaissance aircrafts encroaching into the vast airspace of Soviet Union. They put the humongous engine they could lay their hands on, in an aircraft. The aircraft entered into service of USSR in 1971 and was kept as a secret. Then in 1976, a USSR pilot defected and flew his Mig 25 into Japan, where US officially completely dismantled the aircraft and studied it. It was revealed that in the hurry to get the aircraft into service, the USSR had to make some sacrifices on the technology - like using nickel alloy instead of titanium, using non-flush rivets on airframe, reduced engine service interval etc. With the aircraft in the hand of enemy with every minute details being revealed, it was obvious that the USSR had no point in keeping the Foxbat to themselves and they were quick to offer it for sales to foreign countries. India was in the list and Foxbat was inducted into Indian Airforce in 1981. By that time USSR had already started on development of the next project, Mig 31. And to all those Russian-fanboys in India - they didn't offer the aircraft to India out of their warmheartedness. They sold it when it was already obsolete to fund their next project. In International politics there is no permanent friends of foes - just national interests and at that time India catered to the broader interest of USSR, that's all.

    • @upresins
      @upresins 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I had also read that the radar of the Mig25, because it employed the use of old-style electronic vacuum tube valves, had a very high power output, that rendered it virtually unjammable. It's radar radiation output was so powerful that pilots were advised not to switch on the radar on the ground because any living person or animal caught in the redar beam could be rendered sterile (not impotent- people confuse between the two)
      This is probably an urban legend.

    • @bobbyd1063
      @bobbyd1063 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@upresins Yes, Mig-25 used vacuum tube valves for its electronics. Though it rendered it almost hack-proof, I doubt it was intentional. As you mentioned they were power-hungry and heavy. Also, they moved to electronic phase array radars in the successor, Mig-31. And moving away from the subject, Russia never offered any other country their latest technologies. They offload the old technologies once they start on new projects. You can take the deals they made with India as example - Mig25 was sold when it was compromised by West, Su30 MKI was sold to India on 2002 and they had already started development on Su35 on 1991. Same with S300 missile system, which was bought by India on 2006 and S400 was inducted to Russian forces on 2007. They never, ever, offered anything cutting-edge. It makes me throw-up to see those Russian-fanboys in India trying to justify the attack of an autocratic nation on a sovereign democratic of Ukraine. It is like, you justifying the atrocity of a criminal, just because he bought you cupcake years back. And that too, the cake was stale, and you paid good money for it.

    • @chickencurry7642
      @chickencurry7642 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Mig-25 was built as an interceptor, not an air superior or multirole fighter jet. It's purpose was to intercept and take out America's supposed supersonic bomber Valkyrie which was still in the planning stages. It was said to be able to fly anywhere in the world at altitudes beyond 100000ft. To combat that the USSR built the Mig-25. It's sole purpose was to take out Valkyrie which is why the jet didn't need to be that maneuverable. That is why the mig engineers ignores the jet's already heavy and hard to maneuver frame. Also, because USSR had the largest airspace to defend, they mass-produced mig25 in 100s every month.
      When the US found out about the jet they thought it was useless because they didn't think that it was built to intercept a bomber. As for the Valkyrie bomber itself, that plane never made into production which was also a major reason to render the mig25s obsolete.
      .
      There's an interesting video about this jet on a TH-cam channel named 'Mustard'. Just look for 'mustard Mig-25 video' and you'll find it. I highly recommend that you check it out

      @@bobbyd1063 The two facts are virtually unrelated. Americans are democratic but offer a custom built F-21 to India, which is nothing but F-16 with upgrades. They offer the MQ predator drones which they inducted in USAF 2 decades ago. So much for being Democratic! Russia on the other hand offered India Nuclear Power Plant technology as well as rocket engine that we used to build our GSLV! The democratic America or EU gave neither.
      Coming to the current conflict, you must read the timeline of events from the georgian war in 2008, Syrian war, Maidan Coup 2014 so on and so forth. Looking at things in Isolation is a habit of pseudo liberals. Are you one? Like saying Hindus murdered 2000 Muslims in Gujarat riots as if Godhara never happened, and the 100 other muslim riots in gujarat under congress rule.
      Ukraine was listed as the most corrupt European nation untill 2021. I personally know Ukrainians and they are no different to russians when it comes of corruption and oligarchs ruling the society.

    one correction the mig 25 was actually capable of reaching mach 3.2 but as mentioned in the video was not sustainable because actually the engines were not made for a aircraft and were taken up from other other cruise missiles projects which were under development at that time so these engines were not made for running for too long and had a service life of just 150 hrs.
    and so the sustainable speeds were more in the range of mach 2.5 to 2.8 and not 2.3 as mentioned in the video.

    It can be equipped with all the Hardpoints for all missile carrying and bombing as we are lacking was in 85 k feet service ceiling with 3.5 mach air craft in indian Air Force. Even we can get other countries retired mig 25 foxbat to upgrade for indian Air Force. It'll be a much economic deal for indian airforce.
    Jai hind.

    SR71 was not only experimental. It was purely an aircraft made for reconnaissance. It was never weaponized. It had a damn good camera and extremely fast speeds. The mig 25 on the other hand could provide reconnaissance and as well as be equipped as a fighter jet with missiles when required.

    Mig 25 foxbat is the fastest Intercepter ever build but it is not a agile fighter as is is made up of steel alloys as compared to aluminum, the engines were not reliable either. The only good use this plane has is in Survillance capabilities. As speed is clearly required by Survillance planes like sr 71.
