- Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was told to provide a translation after speaking Spanish in support of statehood for Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico, acquired by the United States from Spain in 1898 after the Spanish-American War, is a commonwealth, or self-governing state, subject to the authority of Congress. Residents can vote in presidential primaries but not the general election. The island has a nonvoting member of Congress but no voting representatives or senators, as states have.
Puerto Rico has given its residents the opportunity to express their opinion on the island's governmental status, holding various nonbinding votes on its relationship to the United States. In a 2020 ballot measure that asked a single question about statehood, 52.3% of voters said they favored Puerto Rico becoming a state. In three earlier nonbinding plebiscites between 1967 and 1998, a majority of Puerto Rican voters favored remaining as a commonwealth. Other residents favored outright independence.

I have family in Puerto Rico and they were there. The room was so overcrowded people couldn't get by each other to get help so he threw paper towels to those in the back that couldn't push forward because of the crowd .
He sent Navy ships over there to help one of my family members who went and labor and their hospital was without power and medical resources so she had to deliver her baby over here in California .

They are honest, humble and proud of their Taino Herritage. Does AOC know anything about the Indigenous Tribes in Puerto Rico and our Caribean Islands for that matter? Does she know who Agüeybana is? I am Puerto Rican, and I know many Puerto Ricans from NYC. Very few Puerto Ricans I know like or identify with AOC or what she represents. In many ways, she is far more part of the political establishment than she is an advocate for the people. I am not quite clear on what she has actually done for her constituents relative to her outsized political profile. Her REAL constituents appear to be the political party she fund raises for.
She speaks the truth, but you’re right she hasn’t really done much for her constituents. But in her defense, she’s not really in a position of power to do much.

Say what you will about her, but the people in NY have proved they love her in an overwhelming majority. She votes how she promised she would, the last omnibus vote for example. The establishment isn’t exactly on her side either, if you haven’t noticed.
