Wow! That Lat/Long measurement on the Ultrasound Failure Report is very precise. By my calculation that is down to the centimeter if not closer to the millimeter.
Wow that's pretty cool to find out Glen. I know on the geometry trucks it is right on the money. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day. And, if you haven't already done so, check out my second channel with more cool railroad videos and other stuff I get into on it. Your the kind of person I would love to have as a subscriber to it. www.youtube.com/@ThatsDavesOtherDoings
Thank you for the nice comment Jon. Cold snap about over, start warming up on Monday and be 50 by Thursday. I like it, but that warmer weather will be hard on the track. Everything is frozen in place now, warm up and the soft spots will come back. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Very cool setup those guys are using. Thank you for sharing that with us, Dave! Always a great video when we get to see a few trains, especially when we get up close to 3098 idling and at notch 1-2 setting off. That big beast pulling out in the snow just feels like something she was built for. Majestic. I love those old SD's. Stay warm! This Texas boy wouldn't be having any of that snow stuff!
Thank you for the nice comment, glad you enjoyed Shane. Supposed to get up to 56 here on Thursday but a lot of rain too. Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Your welcome, glad you enjoyed bowdoin. Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Richard. Those guys just got their mile posts a bit wrong. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it Lawrie. Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
I don't care how bad of a day a person may be having, but all they got to do is watch you and your videos to get a smile!..................Thank You kindly, Sir!
Very glad you enjoyed, thank you for the nice comment Ron. Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Yes it was cold that day, but yesterday here got up to 64 Barbara! Appreciate the nice comment and for taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Ian, glad you enjoyed. Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
I will Nolan, thanks for your caring. Supposed to get up to 56 here this Thursday and 3 or more days of rain. But that will present a different set of problems with so many soft spots in my track. Oh well, that's railroading....:-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Declan, glad to hear you enjoyed. Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Takes me back to the early 1990's. We were chasing ghosts when the ultrasonic crew showed-up. Old rail defects throw-off the ultrasonic machines. Still good to 25mph. Keep up the great content. Hope to shake your hand someday.
Thank you for the nice comment halfinchholes. We had a geometry truck in here today that was fun riding with them. Hope we can someday meet up also. Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Glad you enjoyed and white covered bridge was white that day....:-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video.
Thank you for the nice comment Ron. Cold snap about over, start warming up on Monday and be 50 by Thursday. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.

i live down in tenn and just got maybe couple inches and that was to much dont see how yall people up north take it it is a nice site but i dont wont to see it
Come on up and you can have all you want Arthur....LOL It will be gone soon, supposed to get up to 56 on Thursday. Glad you enjoyed the show. Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Glad you found those loose bolts! Missed them checking the rails, but safety first! Hope the problem with the rear unit was found and fixed. Stay safe and warm, too!
Thank you for the nice comment Trena. Was 3 degrees last night and now start warming up and raining, supposed to be 56 here in a few days, so that will alleviate most of the cold weather problems we have. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
It was but supposed to warm up Thursday to 56 RFM! Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Thanks for the nice comment Raymond, yep when you're smiling the whole world smiles with you..... :-) Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Hi Dave! That was a fun trip. It was like riding in the truck with you. I never knew rails could split inside where you cannot see it. That GPS down to fourteen decimal places was impressive. This work must have been slow going before all the technology.
Glad you enjoyed Bolha, ultrasonic testing is totally impressive in all aspects. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day.
Thank you Edward, was cold that day but supposed to go up to 56 on Thursday! Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
I never liked the cold and the snow. Pull aparts, broken rail, stuck switches, ice on the catenary, etc. But we managed to get the trains over the road. Do the best you can seems to be the universal answer. Take care and stay warm, God bless.😎🚂🚃🚃🚃🏳✝
Seems like there is always some kind of problem on the RR in winter doesn't it Gary, but that's railroadin..... :-_) Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Dave. Glad you are enjoying watching. Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.

@@ccrx6700 hey I'll shoot you a text later this week to grab your address, I wanted to send you a few NS calendars to say 'thanks' for showing me around last summer (I won their calendar photo contest and they sent me a couple boxes of these things hahaha). Talk to you then!
Yes I do Shirley, old one the bill on it cracked, very observant of you. Snow will be gone soon, supposed to get up to 56 here in a couple of days with 3 days of rain coming. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Working outdoors was an absolute joy. We'd have a few bad winter days but a whole lot more good days. A week of snow and sub zero temperatures would be followed up with sunshine and warmer weather. I may not work in it anymore but have a lot respect for guys like you Dave that are still out in the elements getting the job done.
Yes it is darnoldie, I like being outdoors so I can understand your thoughts. Pretty much the same here, cold then warm. Was 3 degrees last night and now start warming up and raining, supposed to be 56 here in a few days, so that will alleviate most of the cold weather problems we have. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Winter cold weather does present it's own set of problems Beverly, but that's railroading...... :-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
If you have all this work on a short 16 mile line, I can imagine the job on hundreds of miles through like Canada and Montana etc. where the weather is so much worse for a longer time. Mind-boggling! Another great one Dave! Stay warm , my friend!
Yes but also remember that many tracks out there are all welded rail and far less degree curves so that makes track maintenance easier even tho the distances are greater Michael. Obviously tho the weather up there is a lot worse than what we have. Thank you for the nice comment and for visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
The folks working on the rails back in the 1850s would be amazed by the modern technology: ultrasonic rail testing, locomotives communicating between themselves at opposite ends of the train, et ceteta.
You are so right in that Kathie. Can you imagine those guys seeing a spiker or tamper in action! Thank you for the nice comment. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment trainchasersatwork. Winter cold weather does present it's own set of problems, but that's railroading...... :-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
There just is something about cold weather that separates the men from the boys. Looking at the conductor trying to throw a switch with snow swirling around it are the Carmen underneath the freight car trying to thaw something out in order to fix it they certainly earn their money that day. For the many years working second shift it was always knowing you either we're going to shovel snow before or after your shift and while one thought about going sick I'd make it a game to see how much stuff you could keep moving on a given bad weather day. Some days you make it and sometimes you'd fall short. Thankfully you were able to resolve the problems or knew what had to be done in the near future. Stay warm in this weird snow cold cycle
You are right about that, seems like there is always something going wrong or to do in the cold weather and snow Paul. I make a game of it too, see how quickly I can get back in the warm truck....LOL Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
That is certainly true Clarence, always something needing fixed around here with everything so old we have. Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.

Thanks for the great video Dave! This cold weather seems to mess with everything, and make life harder! On the bright side, it sure looks nice from the rails 😊
Your welcome, glad you liked it Mojo. Nobody knows more about cold weather hardships than you do tho! Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.

Ok, on the heels of my comment about the Loram Rail Grinder, you brought us this aspect of rail maintenance. This is an interesting science. Thank you. Be warm, stay safe.
Thank you for the nice comment Joanie, and this Wednesday the geometry testing people are coming. Hope I can make a good video about that too. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Well Dave, for once I don't envy you in those conditions 🙂 Great to uncover those problems before they do become an issue! Keep those trains rolling and stay safe 👍

Thank you as always for taking us along today, Dave! It always amazes me just how much work goes into keeping those rails operational! Hope you're able to stay warm out there!
Thank you for the nice comment Seth. Cold snap about over, start warming up on Monday and be 50 by Thursday. I like it, but that warmer weather will be hard on the track. Everything is frozen in place now, warm up and the soft spots will come back. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
@@ccrx6700 I saw the weather report for later this week and couldn't believe how much it's supposed to warm up! That type of switch can't be easy on the rails!! Also, there was just a Norfolk Southern 60W frac sand train that rolled through Elkhart a few minutes ago heading your way. It had three CN locomotives at the front.
That side release agent we called anti-freeze……I used to pull 8,000gl skin tankers to the load outs to fill up those tanks…the colder and the snowier it was the more I got called out….did W.Va., PA, Ohio, Ky and Va…..fun times with the bull dozers and front-end loaders….being pulled and pushed up mountains….those guys didn’t appreciate the surge and scared the crap out of me more than once… lol
Gonna have a video out here soon on the side release agent MisplacedHillbilly. We use a good bit of it. I've even seen one trucker come in on Christmas Eve to fill our tanks several years ago, it was snowing that day too. I feel for you having to drive those roads In WV over snow, WV is terrible about keeping their roads cleaned in the winter. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
The biggest thing about the trucking industry in the winter is frozen air lines and gelled fuel. We use ultrasonic devices to determine undercarriage wear on bulldozers and excavators. We also check the thickness of crusher wear parts too. Stay safe and warm Dave.
Same with the trains here is the frozen air lines, they put an additive in the off road fuel for the locos so we don't have any problems with fuel thank goodness Pete. Interesting info about the testing on the undercarriage wear, I did not know that. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Hi Dave. Nice video. With as many trips from the mine to the port and back a day, it’s no surprise these rail problems arise. Hope you’re able to get the locomotive communications issues cleared up and the rail is sides fixed. Y’all be safe out there. I’ll be keeping you and all the fellas in thoughts and prayers God bless my friend
Thank you for the nice comment Johnathan. Was 3 degrees last night and now start warming up and raining, supposed to be 56 here in a few days. So that will alleviate a lot of the cold weather problems, but it sure will make my track soft in some places with all the rain coming..... sigh. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Oh Wow! I cannot imagine that Bob. Coldest it got here was 3 the other night, then by Thursday supposed to be up to 56! Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Yes sir I will Mike, got to, if I get hurt no more videos....LOL Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
the technology for rail inspection is great to avoid track issues! so much is invisible due to being internal damage versus external! great job Dave ! you have to be 100% all the time with the rails. testing is key to keep the trains rolling ! are you going to do the repairs when it is warmer or ASAP? thank you Dave for such a great video showing “the day in the life on the railroad”
Thank you for the nice comment Barry. Will do the rail change outs as soon as we can and that depends on several things, but certainly it will be a bit warmer! Very much appreciate your visiting with us and checking out the big train problems video my friend.
The Steelton rail mill ultra sounds the rail before its sent out. All rail is sent through the rail straightener also. Cool informative video Dave I cringed a little when i heard it was a Steelton rail . Lol.
Yes they do Michael. But some of the hydrogen deposits left in the rail from the cooling process are so small the ultrasound won't pick them up, they are miniscule in size. Years and years of heavy trains passing over those spots can make them grow into major defects. vAppreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Lewis. Was 3 degrees last night and now start warming up and raining, supposed to be 56 here in a few days, so that will alleviate most of the cold weather problems we have. Glad to hear you are enjoying the videos Ken. These guys were headed to California, if you see Alan, let him know how you found him. Thanks for the nice comment and for taking the time to check out the cold weather problems show my friend.
Hahah I should’ve watched the video all the way before chatting yes ensco is coming to us and I pray it’s not a 40 day trip lol should be week and half the railroad is a great job but rough on the body !
40 days of finding defects, I kick myself for not asking them which RR they were going to go to for that job Ken. You are right, railroading is hard on the body, I know a lot of guys who retired early and had a bunch of physical problems.
Thank you for the nice comment William. For sure ultrasonic testing is pretty cool. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Living in the Mahonining Valley, we were shielded from the worst winter weather. In a radius all around us were several different snow belts. It was always disappointing to see so many school closures on the periphery, but it was very rare that we, ourselves, got to stay home. I have family in the Niagara Region and the situation is similar there. Buffalo can get buried in snow, but on the other side of the river, the Niagara Escarpment shields many of the nearby communities.
We used to get a lot colder temps and much more snow, but it has been quite mild winters around here for the past several years. Global warming? I don't know but I like the warmer winters. Thanks so much for writing in and for watching the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Schadowolf. Cold snap here about over, start warming up on Monday and be 50 by Thursday. I like it, but that warmer weather will be hard on the track. Everything is frozen in place now, warm up and the soft spots will come back. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Hey, hey… I see you have you hands full once again Professor. I hope you take my nickname for you as a compliment Dave… The Train Professor.. ha ha. Another cool video sir, thank you. ✌️😁Don.✨🇨🇦P.S. Your positive energy is very refreshing. 👍🙃☺️
Thank you for the very kind words Don. Glad you enjoyed the show. Winter cold weather does present it's own set of problems, but that's railroading...... :-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.

Dave, I graciously thank you and three cheers for this episode and will be watching the others linked here too. This Ultrasonic and NDT testing has been my life long career and the screen displays you have shown make perfect sense to me. I am familiar with Sperry and Herzog but didn’t know about Ensco, I believe I will be sending out more resumes. My experience is in aerospace but the technology and methods are adaptable to different situations. Once again a hearty thank you and a huzzah for you my friend! 😁😄😃 Happy Rails!
Glad you enjoyed Harold. Another company we have had in here for testing is Nordco. Hopefully you can get on with one of them and come here to do some testing! How cool would that be!! Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
I will try James, supposed to get up to 56 on Thursday here along with 3 days of rain. That will present a different set of problems with soft spots in the track. Oh well, that's railroading. Communication problems in this video were caused by a lack of warmth to the suitcase, someone didn't plug in the heater in the loco nose.....sigh. Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
👍Very difficult to watch Dave, as I sit by my window looking out into 8 degree snowy weather and 30 mph wind gust. Looks much like your weather in this video, but I'm inside for a few days! I'm getting soft...lol, this weather is cake compared to the 60's & 70's when we had real winters. I remember frozen barn cleaners & plowing snow with tractor (no cab) to allow the milk truck to get in and spreading ash/cinders from COAL STOVE on driveway ice, and snow drifts above 12' were common around the barns. Keep the train running Dave, thinking of you out there in the cold. 👍
Thank you for the nice comment Bobblenuts. You are certainly right, the winters back then were a whole lot harsher. As a kid I remember snow back then being on the ground from November until March. Winters are much milder now it seems, no problem with me on that! Very much appreciate your visiting with us and checking out the big train problems video my friend.
Only thing I like better is a steam loco under load gunsaway, but that EMD sure does give it some competition....:-) Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Cold weather causes alot of problems rails engines and cars and to rail testing being done could cause for a bad snowy day but you'll get though it just fine Dave great video
Thank you for the nice comment Gary. You are right, got thru it, tomorrow it's supposed to start warming up and be 50 by Thursday. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
No problem Dave I have just run into a stone in my life at 69 it was found that I have skin cancer in several places and that I injured my left shoulder and surgery is needed on it but it's a career ending will be no longer able to the work that I always done maybe I can teach the younger people on what we do thanks for being a friend
@garymessina1609 im very sorry to hear that Gary. Keep me posted how you are doing. Yes it would be good for you to teach others what you have learned, and it will give you a good purpose to keep going. I only wish for you the very best my friend.
Well you can always move back up north Jeffrey....:-) Snow is nice as long as I can watch it on You Tube. LOL Thanks so much for visiting with us and checking out the cold weather train problem video my friend.

Very interesting stuff here Dave, the ultrasonic tester is so cool, by doing this definitely saves from a derailment in the future from a bad spot of rail. I remember when you had that hopper open up and dump on you, that was an absolute mess. I got about 4-5 inches at my place in Belle Vernon. You need to request sanders on your next hi-railer😂. Excellent video Dave👍🏼😎🇺🇸
I do need sanders on that big hi rail truck! Supposed to get up to 56 here by Thursday as you probably already know, that will alleviate a lot of the cold weather problems, but with the rain coming with the warm weather my track will develop some soft spots in it. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Now how cool is that Jim! They didn't tell me they saw you tho....:-) Very much appreciate your visiting with us and checking out the big train problems video my friend.
You need a good heater on days like this Brrr Real nice riding through the scenery and good you showed the White Bridge. I can see on the defect form the screen shot is a view on top of the rail and the I) shape the defect on the right rail then below showing a side view on the joint bar. I think Pleiku is asking about the building we see at the start of the video and also want to know what that is Looks like a compound for gas bottles, also found there is a kit for making the sand tower so I am going to order one from a shop over here. Hope it warms up soon We got warmer wind now and all our white went next another storm is coming in 80mph winds.
Truck has a real good heater in it Cedarcam, I usually have to turn it down to low after truck gets warmed up, nice! Yes we do have a place to store oxygen and gas cylinders and bottles there. Has a chain link fence around it. Our cold snap is over tonight, start getting warmer on Monday then up to 50 by Thursday. Nice, but will be hard on my track. Everything is frozen in place now but warming up the soft spots will reoccur. Cool beans on the sand tower! Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Nice your truck heater is that good Ours were never so warm. Thanks for the info on the compound I need to make that one day. I am looking at the big loco shed first. It warmed up here but a huge storm over the whole country last night, thats unusual for such a large area, lots of disruption on our railways now.
Boy, am I glad we moved down the NW FL back in the mid-50s. I won't say that it doesn't get cold here because I've seen it at -9 degrees for 3 days. I've also seen it snow on the ground here, but 11 times in 66 years isn't that much and it only stays on the ground for around 4 to 6 hours long enough to let the sun get up in the sky and it melts off. It was 21 degrees here 3 days ago but it has started warming up. It is 41 degrees here at 2135. but it won't get much below 34 degrees throughout the night. I can say with some certainty that I do not miss the snow. We don't have snow plows to use on the roads we never put salt or sand on the roads. There are 7 bridges over parts of the Choctawhatchee Bay so those bridges freeze over and it's very dangerous to drive across them, so schools close.
Snow is nice Hugh, at least when you can stay inside and don't have to drive the roads....LOL I didn't realize it got that cold down there in Fla. -9 is pretty nasty, lowest we've gotten this year is 3 and that was last night. Gonna start warming up and raining and be 56 here in a few days. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
great vid and info! thanks for dealing with the cold to put it out! can we assume that most of the broken bolts you find are in the set of Oldest on the line? also.. could you maybe roll your truck back a ways after you find a broken bolt of two and then film from the cab as you approach the problem letting 'us' try and spot it. you could drive right over it and then say.." Did you see it? we just rolled over it. let me backup again and point out what i look for.." just an idea that would bring a little audience participation. keep up the good work!
Thank you for the nice comment and for the excellent suggestion dboatube, I will do that sometime. Very much appreciate your visiting with us and checking out the big train problems video my friend.
We have seen some bears here out along the track tpobrienjr, but never a polar bear....:-) Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
We are getting dumped on here in Kentucky. I have near a foot of snow in the yard. That's a lot for us! I still find it hard to believe that with all the technology we have they haven't figured out a way to put those trucks on track from inside the truck.
Oh dear, you can come up and borrow my John Deere tractor to plow your snow if you want Jughead. For you it's free rental for a day...:-) My small hi rail truck has push buttons that will let the hi rail gear down or up inside the cab and also outside. I always get out and check tho to make sure the wheels are where they should be tho. Sure don't want to derail that truck. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Thank you Cecil, glad you enjoyed it. Mr. AJ is not only the train operator but on the side is a pastor of a nondenominational church Alro, he's used to speaking eloquently .....:-) Great guy he is and a good operator too. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
With regards to your coal hoppers being old and worn out, if you can't afford new hoppers, what about buying a few from another railroad? I know it makes more and better sense to repair what you have rather than constantly running out to buy new, a good example being your logos. Just an idea to make money stretch further😊
There are a good many decent used hopper cars out there just sitting around not being used Chanwittwer. Last year they looked at a fleet of fairly good cars somewhere down south from us. Cars were $20,000 apiece, which is reasonable for a decent used car. However it was going to cost another 20,000 per car just to get them here. Since we don't interchange with another RR, they would have had to be taken to an NS siding about 6 miles from us then trucked in by Corman. So with that added expense they nixed the idea. Plus the mine had a lot of problems last year and a ton of expenses so there just wasn't money to get new cars. Hopefully that will change this year, keep your fingers crossed. I cannot imagine what it would cost to get another loco trucked in here! Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
You are right about that Jason. Was 3 degrees last night and now start warming up and raining, supposed to be 56 here in a few days, so that will alleviate most of the cold weather problems we have. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Thank you for the kind words Gidget. It would be nice to hang out sometime together. Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
If it was colored red then it would be called red covered bridge .... LOL Yes you are right, that would really stand out cool looking Michael. Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
How do you find the missing or loose bolts without stopping and getting out and inspecting the fish plates and 4 bolts and nuts individually. Also, I've learnt in electronics that it doesn't like it too hot or cold. So we put an heat if it's cold, say a high wattage aluminium cased resistor, on a heat sink inside the box that the electronics is in or if hot some sort of cooling or both, controlled by a thermostat of some kind. Thanks for the video in such cold conditions.
It's pretty easy to see a bolt missing out of a joint Anthony most of the time. Sometimes if I'm not sure, will back up and get out. Much harder to see a cracked joint bar while riding in the truck tho unless it's broken all the way thru. Yes these electronics in the locos like to stay warm! Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
LOL, I liked that William. Thanks for the kind words. Winter cold weather does present it's own set of problems but that's railroading...... :-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
How are the tulips going to come up with all that snow Wayne.....:-) Cold snap here about over, start warming up on Monday and be 50 by Thursday. I like it, but that warmer weather will be hard on the track. Everything is frozen in place now, warm up and the soft spots will come back. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Yes it was but that's railroading Wayne..... :-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Instead of ice road truckers, it's ice road railroaders Arkay....:-) Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Thanks for this video! Bolts breaking and falling out: excessive stress. Which means too much/little ballast, worn out tie, mud spot, et cetera. In an ideal world, in addition to replacing the bolt, the underlying problem would be diagnosed and rectified. An overcast sky lets much ultravioret light through, which gives a black&white illumination with color washout. An inexpensive UV filter (clip-on for smart phone, screw-on for GoPro) will keep the UV light from overwhelming, and will restore much of the color.
Interesting to learn about the UV filter, I will check into that Robin. Everything on this video was white tho....LOL Winter does present it's own unique problems on the RR. Now it's going to warm up to 56 on Thursday and that will bring on a different set of problems on the track with all the rain coming. Oh well, that's railroading.....:-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Wow! That Lat/Long measurement on the Ultrasound Failure Report is very precise. By my calculation that is down to the centimeter if not closer to the millimeter.
Wow that's pretty cool to find out Glen. I know on the geometry
trucks it is right on the money. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video my friend and may you have a very good day. And, if you haven't already done so, check out my second channel with more cool railroad videos and other stuff I get into on it. Your the kind of person I would love to have as a subscriber to it.

Yet another look into the behind the scenes rail operations. Thank you Dave for bringing us along. Stay warm and be safe...
Thank you for the nice comment Jon. Cold snap about over, start
warming up on Monday and be 50 by Thursday.
Supposed
to get up to 56 here on Thursday but a lot of rain too. Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Where in Texas? I am in Brownsville. He says calling for 3-5” of snow on that day! Yuck! Looks too cold for me.
Thanks again Dave / Stay safe

I do love the way in which you still stick to your mile post measurements - when there is a GPS resolution to 14 decimal places! :)
Thank you for the nice comment Richard. Those guys just got
their mile posts a bit wrong. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Absolutely awesome vid thanks for the ride Dave .

Hi Mr Dave looks like you all have busy day ,and it's a cold one becareful and have a great day like your videos so informative.

Stay warm Dave!
I will Nolan, thanks for your caring. Supposed to get up to 56 here
this Thursday and 3 or more days of rain. But that will present a
different set of problems with so many soft spots in my track. Oh
well, that's railroading....:-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Another informative video👍
Thanks Dave !

Hope we can
someday meet up also. Very much appreciate your taking the time

Thank you for the ride Dave! Winter weather makes maintenance much more difficult, but you keep on smiling and doing your job, great work Dave!
Thanks for the nice comment Raymond, yep when you're smiling
the whole world smiles with you.....
Glad you enjoyed Bolha, ultrasonic testing is totally impressive
in all aspects. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch and
may you have a very good day.
Great video Dave thanks for explaining it all, and taking us along!
Thank you for the nice comment Dave. Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.

Yes it is darnoldie, I like being outdoors so I can understand your

If you have all this work on a short 16 mile line, I can imagine the job on hundreds of miles through like Canada and Montana etc. where the weather is so much worse for a longer time. Mind-boggling!
Another great one Dave! Stay warm , my friend!
Yes but also remember that many tracks out there are all welded
rail and far less degree curves so that makes track maintenance
easier even tho the distances are greater Michael. Obviously tho
the weather up there is a lot worse than what we have. Thank you for the nice comment and for visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.

The folks working on the rails back in the 1850s would be amazed by the modern technology: ultrasonic rail testing, locomotives communicating between themselves at opposite ends of the train, et ceteta.

spiker or tamper in action! Thank you for the nice comment. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.

You are right about that, seems like there is always something going
wrong or to do in the cold weather and snow Paul. I make a game of
it too, see how quickly I can get back in the warm truck....LOL Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.

I've even seen one trucker
come in on Christmas Eve to fill our tanks several years ago, it was
snowing that day too. I feel for you having to drive those roads In WV over snow, WV is terrible about keeping their roads cleaned in the
winter.
Same with the trains here is the frozen air lines, they put an additive
in the off road fuel for the locos so we don't have any problems with
fuel thank goodness Pete. Interesting info about the testing on
the undercarriage wear, I did not know that. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Hi Dave. Nice video. With as many trips from the mine to the port and back a day, it’s no surprise these rail problems arise.
Hope you’re able to get the locomotive communications issues cleared up and the rail is sides fixed.

the technology for rail inspection is great to avoid track issues! so much is invisible due to being
internal damage versus external! great job Dave ! you have to be 100% all the time with the rails.
testing is key to keep the trains rolling ! are you going to do the repairs when it is warmer or ASAP?
thank you Dave for such a great video showing “the day in the life on the railroad”

The Steelton rail mill ultra sounds the rail before its sent out. All rail is sent through the rail straightener also. Cool informative video Dave I cringed a little when i heard it was a Steelton rail . Lol.
Yes they do Michael. But some of the hydrogen deposits left in
the rail from the cooling process are so small the ultrasound won't
pick them up, they are miniscule in size. Years and years of heavy
trains passing over those spots can make them grow into major
defects. vAppreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.

railroading is hard on the body, I know a lot of guys who retired

Living in the Mahonining Valley, we were shielded from the worst winter weather. In a radius all around us were several different snow belts. It was always disappointing to see so many school closures on the periphery, but it was very rare that we, ourselves, got to stay home.
I have family in the Niagara Region and the situation is similar there. Buffalo can get buried in snow, but on the other side of the river, the Niagara Escarpment shields many of the nearby communities.
We used to get a lot colder temps and much more snow, but it
has been quite mild winters around here for the past several years.

Hey Dave, is there any way to "tent" the locomorives in the cold weather to help with the communicarions between them? Just a thpught!
I will try James, supposed to get up to 56 on Thursday here along with
3 days of rain. That will present a different set of problems with soft

in this video were caused by a lack of warmth to the suitcase,

As a kid I remember
snow back then being on the ground from November until March. Winters are much milder now it seems, no problem with me on that! Very much appreciate your visiting with us and checking out the big train problems video my friend.
Nothing sounds better than an EMD SD unit!
Only thing I like better is a steam loco under load gunsaway, but
that EMD sure does give it some competition....:-) Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
@@ccrx6700 thanks

I love the snow, however here in central Oklahoma, I'd have a better chance of Gold falling from the sky, than I would snow....LOL!
Well you can always move back up north Jeffrey....:-) Snow is
nice as long as I can watch it on You Tube. LOL Thanks so much for visiting with us and checking out the cold weather train problem video my friend.
I really enjoyed the video the info. was very interesting STAY WARM 👍👍
Thank you for the nice comment Russell. Cold snap about over, start
warming up on Monday and be 50 by Thursday. I like it, but that warmer weather will be hard on the track. Everything is frozen in place now, warm up and the soft spots will come back. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
It is good to know that I have as much of a chance at winning Employee Of the Month as Dave.
LOL, I like that Jack. I tease everybody about winning employee of
the month, day or year.... :-) Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
Great video To Cold.
Thank you Derrick. Cold snap here about over, start warming up on Monday and be 50 by Thursday. I like it, but that warmer weather will be hard on the track. Everything is frozen in place now, warm up and the soft spots will come back. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Supposed to get up to
56 here by Thursday as you probably already know, that will alleviate
a lot of the cold weather problems, but with the rain coming with
the warm weather my track will develop some soft spots in it.
Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
hey good job there dave
.
Thank you Neal. Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Ran into those ultrasonic guys at Walmart Uniontown Yesterday. Wondering where they were working. Now I know.
Now how cool is that Jim! They didn't tell me they saw you tho....:-)

Truck has a real good heater in it Cedarcam, I usually have to turn it
down to low after truck gets warmed up, nice! Yes we do have a
place to store oxygen and gas cylinders and bottles there. Has a
chain link fence around it. Our cold snap is over tonight, start getting
warmer on Monday then up to 50 by Thursday. Nice, but will be
hard on my track. Everything is frozen in place now but warming
up the soft spots will reoccur.

Snow is nice Hugh, at least when you can stay inside and don't have
to drive the roads....LOL I didn't realize it got that cold down there in
Fla. -9 is pretty nasty, lowest we've gotten this year is 3 and that
was last night. Gonna start warming up and raining and be 56 here
in a few days.
Thank you for the nice comment and for the excellent suggestion
dboatube, I will do that sometime. Very much appreciate your visiting with us and checking out the big train problems video my friend.
Was that a polar bear just walked by?
It was BigFoot in his/her hunting suit!
We have seen some bears here out along the track tpobrienjr, but
never a polar bear....:-) Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
We are getting dumped on here in Kentucky. I have near a foot of snow in the yard. That's a lot for us!
I still find it hard to believe that with all the technology we have they haven't figured out a way to put those trucks on track from inside the truck.
Oh dear, you can come up and borrow my John Deere tractor to
plow your snow if you want Jughead. For you it's free rental for a day...:-) My small hi rail truck has push buttons that will let the hi rail gear down or up inside the cab and also outside. I always get out
and check tho to make sure the wheels are where they should be tho.
Sure don't want to derail that truck. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
That was Interesting
Thank you Cecil, glad you enjoyed it. Was 3 degrees last night and

With regards to your coal hoppers being old and worn out, if you can't afford new hoppers, what about buying a few from another railroad?
I know it makes more and better sense to repair what you have rather than constantly running out to buy new, a good example being your logos.
Just an idea to make money stretch further😊
There are a good many decent used hopper cars out there just sitting
around not being used Chanwittwer. Last year they looked at a
fleet of fairly good cars somewhere down south from us. Cars were
$20,000 apiece, which is reasonable for a decent used car. However
it was going to cost another 20,000 per car just to get them here.
Since we don't interchange with another RR, they would have had
to be taken to an NS siding about 6 miles from us then trucked in
by Corman. So with that added expense they nixed the idea. Plus
the mine had a lot of problems last year and a ton of expenses so
there just wasn't money to get new cars. Hopefully that will change
this year, keep your fingers crossed. I cannot imagine what it
would cost to get another loco trucked in here! Very much appreciate your visiting with us to check out the big train problems video my friend.
Dave it seems like winter is always the time when something will happen and you have to be out in the cold. It has been down in the 20's here all day.
You are right about that Jason. Was 3 degrees last night and
now start warming up and raining, supposed to be 56 here in a few

That white covered bridge in the snow look real nice if the covered bridge was in red
If it was colored red then it would be called red covered bridge .... LOL
Yes you are right, that would really stand out cool looking Michael.

It's pretty easy to see a bolt missing out of a joint Anthony most of
the time. Sometimes if I'm not sure, will back up and get out. Much
harder to see a cracked joint bar while riding in the truck tho unless
it's broken all the way thru. Yes these electronics in the locos like
to stay warm! Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.

Everything on this video was white tho....LOL Winter does present it's
own unique problems on the RR. Now it's going to warm up to 56
on Thursday and that will bring on a different set of problems on the track with all the rain coming. Oh well, that's railroading.....:-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the cold weather train problems video my friend.
