much appreciated! the spirit continues, though the footage is delayed ^__^ (and there are a couple of new items on the website/rumble islandblacksmith.ca )
I think you can certainly be glad to know that you have done what you said here. without these videos and blogs, I would very likely not be...anything I am today. the knowledge and inspiration you provided helped set my course, not sure how far I can go or how long for but I do not regret spending the time and learning the old ways and even if I have to stop one day, I know and hope it will only be a short while. I hope you continue with the same optimism until you make it back stay safe and all the best!
thank you for the encouragement, very much appreciated...none of us know how long we have...test everything, hold on to what is good...one day at a time!
thank you! yes, i always enjoy the view of the flame and spark...here is the finished kotanto from the film: islandblacksmith.ca/2021/02/forest-kotanto-with-antique-fittings/
This is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing all that you do. It is so nice to hear your philosophy of what you do. On a different note, I build my own non-traditional Fuigo last year after watching a few of your videos, it is way better than a hand crank blower or a hairdryer.
i’d love if you demonstrated the process of making a yoroi doshi style of tanto with traditional handmade fittings(i am currently making something similar).
if you hunt around my website and take notes you will find all of the components of such a project, start at the bottom of the process page, and check the tags on the search page, particularly the "tanto geometry" one...
Your videos are just what I needed! Such dedication to the craft. Im looking at making a forge similar to yours soon. Im a cook at a Japanese restaurant and want to start forging Japanese kitchen knives. Any good book recommendations for Japanese bladesmithing?
there are some articles on the website on traditional and simple forge construction, plenty there about tanto/sword construction, tools, and geometry...but not everything applies to culinary knives...i also have some playlists with traditional craftsmen at work for study purposes..
depending on what area of blacksmithing specialty you want to study you may find some good basics online (eg. brian brazeal perhaps)...there aren't any books on the basics of japanese sword style knifemaking, perhaps i need to write one...
I'd love to see your take on a Klugger's knife (Lever knife, using an eye to deliver much force with great accuracy and little strain on the user's body) Very useful tool if one works with wood.
no, just a similar kamon, it is a rare form that has the oxalis top centre even though it is within a maru...usually the ken is top centre in this configuration...

I'm beginner and I want to ask what books do you recommend for person like me?
I've personally read a book called "The art of blacksmithing". It's a good history of blaclsmithing which is in my opinion important
depending on what area of blacksmithing specialty you want to study you may find some good basics online (eg. brian brazeal perhaps)...there aren't any books on the basics of japanese sword style knifemaking, perhaps i need to write one...
