Alex, thanks for making this for someone with the perspective of never playing Dice Throne before. I've seen it in the periphery of the boardgame community, but never delved into what it actually was.
The thing I will say for the sleeves, is that cards have the same backs. So having the custom character sleeves does make it easier to keep track of them, on the off chance they get mixed up.
True, although one tip for people without the sleeves is to look at the top right on each card -- it lists the hero and the specific card it is (they're numbered from 1 to 32 or however many cards in the deck).
Wait Alex, last time I heard you talk about Dice Throne, you said it was "overproduced battle yahtzee" and you sold your copy. When did you become a huge fan of it?
Always great to have new characters. Even if it's from the Marvel Universe. I agree that it would be difficult to not have overlapping characters. They seem different enough. I think it will be a blast to take on the other characters from S1/S2. Paladin vs Thor, Moon Elf vs Black Widow. Captain Marvel vs Seraphim, Black Panther vs Huntress. Cursed Pirate vs Scarlett Witch. Dr Strange vs Pyromancer or any other combination. After all the main story around Dice Throne is about a Portal of sorts bringing the best fighters around the world a la Mortal Kombat.
Now that you mention it, Mortal Kombat would be a pretty awesome IP to have with the Dice Throne system. Similar to Exceed, I feel like you can slap on any IP to Dice Throne and have a great game.
I just got into dice builder games. Picked up One Deck Dungeon and really liked the mechanics so I'm excited for this. Saw the original at my FLGS so I'm going to get that while waiting for this to arrive on my porch.
Picking up the battle chest, dice tray, sleeves and Miles Morales playmat :). If I really like the game when I get it, I'll look to pick up DT Adventures then too.
DTA is a great way to play solo or with friends who aren't fans of head-to-head combat. But it does take a 30 minute game and stretches the experience over 1.5 hours X 8+ scenarios.. Which in my case is great, but you definitely need to be looking for that kind of experience. Actually one of my fav things about DTA is that at the end of each scenario you get Loot that permanently goes into your hero's deck and it REALLY feels like leveling up your hero, and when you reach the final boss you have this very unique set of cards that really makes your hero feel like YOURS. :)
I completely agree. Anyone that doubts that should watch some of the top players in the final games of the huge online tournaments that have gone on. The specific timing of when to play cards and which cards to sell at which point of the game depending on when you draw them, and which upgrades are worth it when you're up against one hero but better to sell when you're up against another hero... when is a transference better than a buh-bye.. Is it better to use your dice manipulation cards to give yourself an ultimate or to try to force your opponent to whiff... or to save them in case they try to make you whiff. There are SO many variables, and when you really dig into this game, it has the structure and the depth to hold up to that level of decision making. Yes, you roll dice and they don't always do what you want... but knowing what to do to save a turn when you're in trouble is also part of the game's strategy. The game is accessible and easy to play lightly at lunch time with a coworker, or with your kids even, but it isn't ONLY that. Going up against hundreds of players in tournaments the same guy has won multiple times.... that's proof the strategy outweighs the luck.
Thanks for this video. Very nice to see your opinions. I usually pay the minimum on KS to get to Pledge manager, to see how much everything costs in the end, but this one I pledged for full amount right away :). With the introduction of IPs to the DT world.... now when do we see DT Mortal Kombat, DT Masters of the Universe, DT Star Wars and DT DC ? :)
Love Dice Throne. It’s soooo much fun. Very easy to teach and get to the table. All the characters are so different and very balanced. Amazing components and Art. I already have season 1 rerolled and Adventures. I’be already pledged for Marvel Dice Throne.
That makes sense. I can’t see solo being that fun. I am super excited about that game and backed it at headmaster level but solo? I’m having a hard time wrapping my brain around how that would be fun. Hopefully your video will convince me.
Great coverage as usual Alex! I was looking forward to ordering dice throne adventures as an add on to hopefully save on combined shipping but I guess I’ll have to order from the website instead. (Darn those licensing issues :)
I love Dice Throne but I'm tired of the generic Marvel Heroes. Between Season 1 and 2 there is already a huge selection of characters. You are completely right that characters could start feeling the same within the engine and I'm not convinced 8 more would add much to my enjoyment for another $100. I was excited for Marvel United X-Men because of the less common characters that I grew up with.
As someone who has been playing this game from the beginning, I was concerned about them just slapping the Marvel Characters into the game, and would they feel like different characters, i.e. does Black Widow play like the Moon Elf, with just different names? After watching Man vs Meeple's videos talking more in depth, I feel that a lot of work has gone into making them completely new and unique. That being said I agree that with the 16 characters I already own, I don't know if I really need 8 more. (Especially the generic Marvel Characters)
I’ve been a fan of dice throne since I first saw them at gen con when they were still demoing the play test version of the game. I’ve been slightly soured by the somewhat large expense to keep playing the game. It really shocked me that their was only a fairly expensive battle chest tier for this Kickstarter.
This isn't marvel dice throne, it's avengers dice throne. That's the problem. They didn't make anybody but the avengers fans happy, and even they likely don't have their favourite avenger included. The game is solid though. I'd recommend it to pretty much anybody that likes rolling dice.
Good points. I have the 2 battle chests and I like Marvel. I’m pretty ok with the line up too. But do I want/need to spend the money on this set and won’t some characters feel similar to earlier ones? Difficult question.
I've playtested the Marvel heroes, and I've also played the 16 heroes from S1 and S2 many, many times (my wife and I play it regularly). I have found the Marvel heroes to be the most interesting out of all the heroes I've played. Yes, they all have 8 abilities and an ultimate and certain common cards, but that structure is just the skeleton from which near-infinite innovation is possible. These Marvel heroes have completely new status effects, really unique cards, and they do things we just haven't seen before. Loki's character introduces a bluffing element into the game and he can even block abilities right off his opponent's board! Dr. Strange literally has a spellbook at his disposal, and Black Widow can play upgrades from her hand in the middle of rolling her attack. Now, obviously everyone has their own preferences, and their own opinions, but for ME, these heroes feel fresh and unique and super fun.
@@joelface That's super interesting. Thanks for your input! Me & the wife have played well over 150 games and knowing that there is more innovation is very exciting =)
The whole "no matter what hero they put in, they will make someone angry" argument is a bit naïve. These characters are not unknown characters to help "spice" things up. For example, Captain Marvel is heavily being pushed by Marvel in all games with their brand. She was in the core set for Marvel Champions, Marvel United and now this. Marvel made them put these specific characters in the game because they want to advertise their phase 4 MCU movies. Miles Morales is the only one that really doesn't fit into that, but he also headlined his own movie a few years ago that was extremely popular and is definitely a character they want to push. Not including characters like Peter Parker (the real Spider-Man), Hulk, Ironman, Captain America, Wolverine, etc., is like not including Batman or Superman in a D.C. game. Sure, there are people who want that C list hero that no one cares about, except the the diehards, but if you are going to launch a product, you should choose your iconic brands that people know and love, not just pick characters to try to push another product. I have cooled a bit on Marvel over the past few years, but if they had brought out their big hitters, I would have plopped down the money, instead of my inner voice constantly telling me that I enjoy Marvel but not the biggest fan of most of these characters and it's not worth it.
I have a feeling that they will do a season two with other 8 characters… I truly love the game even in adventure mode… I didn’t check if I can play marvel in the adventure mode can I?
Mmh to be honest I love Dice Throne and don’t have my own copy so I was very interested in this version as I am also a marvel fan but I am probably not backing it. If the art style was not a problem for me in the original version, when applied to marvel characters that I know a bit better, it seems to bother me more ? This is just personal taste and opinion of course but I think that there are probably other people in the same case
Great video as always! Would you recommend trying the 2 character box to someones who has never played the game before, or does the game shine only with a lot of characters? It is not available in my country so I would really want to know if I like it before buying.
Even as someone who has played this game from the beginning, I will probably be buying the 2 character packs myself, because I can spread the cost out with my limited budget. (I know that I paying slightly more, but I can spread that expense out). I would say that buying the 2 character boxes is a pretty good way to start to find out if you really like the game, because of the big expense you could have buyers remorse later on if you buy the big battle chests before you know if you like the game. Or I recommend watching some gameplay videos to watch how the game really works.
@@noreviewplaythrough4051 Another way to spread out the cost is to pledge some of the money during the kickstarter and pay the rest off in the pledge manager later. I've done this in the past, and paying 50/50 really helps if you're watching your monthly budget.
A 2-hero pack is a great intro to the game, but it might make you really excited to try out some of the other characters since they're all so different.
I feel it's kinda pricey for only 8 character....correct me if I'm wrong but it's just cards and dice for 8 heroes...I mean I got marvel united with minis at Walmart for 40 bucks.
Each hero has dials, a large playerboard, a leaflet with bio, art, dice and status effect info and an FAQ on the back, 5 unique dice, a unique deck of cards, numerous status effects and a tray that holds all of those components together so that you can pull your hero out and have it set up ready to play in, truly, about 20 seconds. And the components are high quality too.
I know you only focus on the kickstarters but is the retail version for season 1&2 + Adventures on their site worth the investment? Seems way pricier than it’s KS bundle. Marvel IP isn’t doing it for me but I was hoping they would do a previous campaigns pledge which they didn’t.
The retail copies on their site won't hold their value, at least not unless something goes out of print for a long time. As of now you can buy them on the second hand market for cheaper.
I've had both seasons for a while now. We play it at least couple times a month. I did spend extra money for tokens, sleeves, figures. We were hoping for a good season 3, independent characters. Marvel just doesnt sit well with me. They had their own thing going on.
I know they have many more original heroes in development and they plan to release a Season 3 at some point in the future. Honestly these heroes are super fun though, and if you can get past the name... Loki is "Trickster" and Scarlet Witch is "Witch" and you're going to love the unique mechanics and playstyles they offer. But if you can't get past it, just hang in there, because I know more will come.
I don't care if its marvel, dc or any other... it is just new characters with new abilities, and you can mix it up against other heroes so... that's what I'm signing in for. I have seen how pricey marvel products get with time.. so i pay 100 now and if i take good care who knows, in a couple of years i can get back 500
Those who own all previous Dice Thrones like myself likely just hit instant back. My only small gripes so far is Black Panther seems too vanilla for my liking and Marvel is such a massive roster and I actually hope they DONT make much Marvel DT as it could easily lead to a quick over saturation...
It seems interesting, but the art style hurts to look at. I was really hoping they would get some of the more renown comic artists to depict the characters, but it feels so weird for some of the characters.
Personally I love the art style, but I can definitely hear people wanting others, especially if they're coming in more from the marvel preference than the dice throne preference
We love Dice Throne, but I don't need more Marvel garbage...lol. but that's just my game group. Easy pass. Side note: I will be buying Unmatched Marvel...lol...I guess with owning Dice Throne season 1 & 2 I'm good.
I was concerned about that too until I watched a bunch of character previews from the Man VS Meeple channel. I looks like they really took time to make each character feel different, however, I already own all 16 characters from the original game, and what I really like about them, is that they are unique characters to that universe, and I don't really like adding Marvel to that universe.
Hi Alex, I had my reserve about this one, since the first day I heard about it. For starter, your description and feelings toward the game are spot on. At least for me, I love Dice Throne, because it is fun, well produced and easy to teach. So, I love Dice Throne, I love the Marvel universe, but thematically, it just doesn't work for me. I have no problems with all the season 1 and 2 characters fighting it all and adding the adventure, it is great fun. But Thor fighting a barbarian or Captain marvel fighting a Ninja... It just make no sense to me... Not more if you take them on the adventure. I believe that system wise, it would work, but thematically, it just bugs me. I wished they were going for a season 3 instead. So I thought to myself, maybe I could just have two sets of characters that can't mix together, but first off, Thor versus Black Widow or Captain marvel versus Black panther, just makes no sense to me... And you kind of answer my main question... How could they make us feel like we are playing those well known character when the basic sequence of dice would surely be the same for every characters... So, I decide to let it pass. I believe it will be as fun as the other seasons of Dice Throne, but being a Marvel lover for 40 years, this game just makes no sense to me. But hopefully they'll make tons of money and either come up with a Season 3 (I agree with the more "advanced characters") and/or a Dice Throne Adventure 2. Thank you for another sincere opinion video. Keep up the good work!
@@BoardGameCo here's the funny thing about this campaign for me, of all the places to use the marvel IP, I feel like dice throne is the worst. Marvel in unmatched, I like it, marvel in Zombicide, very cool, Marvel in love letter, fun! but Marvel in dice throne just feels like more generic heroes. These could just be reskinned as whatever and it would feel the same to me. I don't know, this is just the least exciting use of the marvel IP when it comes to cross IPs for me 🤷🏻♂️
I have both season 1 and season 2 and love the game. I’m not going to support this one because I know that they will come out with a second marvel season with captain America, iron man and/spider man. I love these characters but smart on them not to bring out the big guns!
@@BoardGameCo and I am going to assume they will have a bundle like the last kickstarter. I really love this game and not sure if I will add this one to my collection just yet. Going to wait it out till it gets closer to the end
find the character extremely boring and uninteresting... which doesnt exactly translate to a game tbf but still would rather someone else got in instead. Marvel keep trying to make them work and has failed every time. (IMO)
Not backing. Although I’m very intrigued with the system at the end of the day it’s just a PvP combat system. DTA fixed that, made it more than a smash-up. That whole IP has gone nowhere. I was hoping for more.

My only small gripes so far is Black Panther seems too vanilla for my liking and Marvel is such a massive roster and I actually hope they DONT make much Marvel DT as it could easily lead to a quick over saturation...
Agreed on all counts. While I love marvel, if there are 50 characters... For this type of game that's just too much.
Why no villains?
Loki.
Damn it. Love dice throne. Not invested in Marvel.. or suddenly, am I?
Lol yep
No new adventures content = not that enthusiastic, for me at least
If adventures is your main jam, then that makes sense.
I cannot believe Horizon randomly keeps popping up in the background 😄 And the sad thing is, I know for a fact that it's not on this week's agenda. 😅
Finally filmed the unboxing :-) But yeah, there are a bunch of things I need to get through first.
@@BoardGameCo Thanks Alex!
Can you do resident evil next and discuss the add ons.
Is Marvel Dice Throne just a re-skin of Dice Throne?
I was concerned about that too until I watched a bunch of character previews from the Man VS Meeple channel. I looks like they really took time to make each character feel different, however, I already own all 16 characters from the original game, and what I really like about them, is that they are unique characters to that universe, and I don't really like adding Marvel to that universe.
They're all designed from the ground-up and have new powers, abilities, status effects and new interesting ways to play.
Thor isn't in civil war. He's too strong a super hero for that fight 🤷🏻♂️
Fair enough, I mean the general concept :)
Ya I have to assume there will be a season 2.
@@BoardGameCo and I am going to assume they will have a bundle like the last kickstarter.
I really love this game and not sure if I will add this one to my collection just yet. Going to wait it out till it gets closer to the end
I wish Ironman was in it.
I'm sure a lot of people do.
@@BoardGameCo my profile pic is a big hint. Haha
I am sad Batman is not there :"(
...
Wait, what?
Lol yeah
I don’t understand why they left out the core team of Hulk, Iron Man, and Captain America and gave us the B team.
They will hit a Million dollars and do so without having a $1100 all in pledge......
i mean thats a fine selection but capt marvel needs to be thrown in the bin in their entirety
Why?
find the character extremely boring and uninteresting... which doesnt exactly translate to a game tbf but still would rather someone else got in instead. Marvel keep trying to make them work and has failed every time. (IMO)
Captain marvel and that unknown witch shouldn't even be in the game. Where is Hulk, Iron man?!
Why shouldn't they exactly?
Not backing. Although I’m very intrigued with the system at the end of the day it’s just a PvP combat system. DTA fixed that, made it more than a smash-up. That whole IP has gone nowhere. I was hoping for more.
I'm still curious whether marvel makes it to adventures. Past the ability to combine, but more the intent to combine.
Hard pass
