  • This is a 2 night/3 day backpacking trip on the Olympic Coast of Washington. We traverse the forest before making our way to the coast. Our route in the Ozette Loop. This is a stunning, rugged loop where we encounter wildlife, beautiful coastal scenes and weather. This is definitely one of my favorite backpacking trips this year thus far.

Kinda looks like Acadia, breathtaking scenery. Bears on the beach, avoiding high tides, great adventure! "Gentleman"Joey, what a good soul he is for helping you! Thanks for sharing!

Duchess Christine, It really does remind me of Acadia National Park in Maine. The only difference is the tides in Acadia come much faster. We were out walking on the beach, with the granite cliff rocks and the ocean on both sides of us. We noticed how quickly the water was coming in, but we were so far up the beach that the shore was disappearing quickly, so we had to climb up high on the rocks, or get washed out to sea! Yikes! Scary memory!!

It's on about the same latitude too. One of the major differences I see between our forests is yours has more deciduous trees where ours is leaning heavily towards Evergreen.
The best part, BOTH are SPECTACULAR! A beautiful place to add to any bucket list!
Our water is warmer, and it seemed to me that we had more sand on our beaches, but I sort of like that Rocky outcrop look that Maine and Newfoundland has . You are right about the title exchange though!
Curious how yours could be so extreme, yet for us those extreme title exchanges are farther north, along the inside passage on the west of Canada and on up into Alaska.
We have some Inland clams that would absolutely shock you with their size. We don't have any Lobster though so you'll have to bring that yourself.

We lived just south of that rainforest there on the peninsula. It is very beautiful, but with 80" of rain a year and very little sunshine, I was ready to leave.
Also, Cape Alava is the western most point of the lower 48 and the western terminus for the Pacific Northwest Trail (PNT).

I live here in Forks. I walk Rialto beach at least once a week for exercise. The Ozzett loop is one of my favorites. I walked it a couple months ago and ran into a Mountain Lion. I was walking the HOH Rainforest a few days ago in heavy heavy rain. The trail was full of water and two giant trees came crashing down. Oh and did you see the petroglyphs on the beach rocks ?

I've backpacked a longer version of this trail (6 days, 5 nights). It wasn't easy that's for sure. The bald eagles were plentiful and watching them fishing for breakfast was incredible. Very different than forest, mountain backpacking.

This brings back so many memories: been here 5 times over the years, first time 1968 ( at 18 YO). Coming from Dallas, I had no idea this park existed - was recommended by a hotel clerk! North Texas is flat, so this was an incredible change of scenery: the joke there is, On a clear day, you can see Nebraska! My last trip, in 2000, was with my wife and daughters, via Amtrak's Coast Starlight from LA. (That's a great trip all it's own). To say they were awed by the beauty and variety is an understatementI Your programs are uniformly excellent, but this one transcends excellence!!! Thank You!

Aprx 55 miles total including where you have to divert inland a bit then back out to Ruby beach where the northern portion of the hike starts. He loved the Olympic Peninsula ever since he was stationed at Bangor Naval Sub Base. Although we did backpack some of the Olympics Park on my vacation trips there to visit. And yes we did have some vocal and evidence of Sasquatch activity on one trip in the Park. So please beware of the forest people there. Definitely one of the most wildest places to backpack through. Very nice! I am a huge fan of the Ozette area. I first backpacked to Sand Point as a teenager with a friend of mine. He and I made several trips there, even taking his sister and cousin along on one of them. Later, my wife and I took our two daughters there for several trips. On other trips, many other family members and friends got introduced to packing out and camping at the Sand Point spot by us. I cannot recall how many times I’ve camped at Sand Point. I do know I camped twice at Cape Alava. Once with our two daughters and a friend of theirs. (Poor wife missed that trip due to a surgery that put back packs out of the question.) The second trip to Cape Alava, I made with our oldest grandson in 2005. We camped there for two days that time. That was my last pack trip on that loop. I did go back in 2015 to hike the loop with two of our nieces who had long wanted to make that hike. On that one, I took some ashes of my teenage friend from those teen year pack trips to leave at Sand Point. Many memories of the area. And that surf can sneak up on a person, alright! I had to laugh (in sympathy) at your close call with the waves. Glad your camera didn’t drown. Thanks for the video and the walk down memory lane.

Catherine, Thank you for such an incredible video of you and Joey's amazing and challenging backpack on the Olympic Coast! Also, thank you for bringing back wonderful memories. Here's one of them that I'm sure you can identify with. I camped at Ruby Beach about 25 years ago, and loved it! Its beauty is unique in many ways. Climbing the obstacle course of fallen giant redwoods bleached by the sun was fun. I felt so relaxed and peaceful being perched atop one of them, my face warmed by the sun, with the beach of brilliantly colored stones, seashells and sea glass spread out below me like a magic carpet. The next morning during low tide I joined hundreds of seabirds for a walk on the smooth, wet sand at the water's edge. Looking out through the morning mist at the waves, vibrant colors of aqua, orange, vermillion and ruby flashed against the dark background of a volcanic rock, visible between the intervals of the crashing waves. I waded out to investigate. Waist deep in the chilly waters, I arrived at the rock. Clinging to it were large jewel colored sea anemones and starfish!

Great video of a great hike. I saw a bear with cubs right where you camped. They are pretty harmless animals in my experience--but who knows. Not like hiking in Alaska where the bears are decidedly dangerous. Good for you to go solo. I’ve been full time solo (and full time RN) in an SUV for 5 years-a Lexus GX470-and we’ve crossed paths more than once. Not always a bed of roses but I’m happier than ever on average past five years. I have done this a few times since I moved to Washington. Words don't do it justice, pictures and videos get close. To walk it, priceless.

Love those Pacific storms. They can be brutal but the next day is always spectacular and peaceful.

Spent a couple weeks in WA and hit Olympic, North Cascades, and Mt Rainier last summer, absolutely loved it. It's probably too late in the season, but I highly recommend you spend time at the other 2 parks in WA as well..!

I got the opportunity of a lifetime to travel up to an area called Ruby Beach. One of the most beautiful spots on the Pacific or of any place Ive ever been in my lifetime shorelines with seastacks ,and driftwood washed upvon shore.

Such a beautiful rugged coastline. Another area we need to visit. My wife and I have lived in California almost 40 years and have yet to get up north.
Thank You for “taking us”there Cat.
    Another trip on our list.

The Olympic peninsula beaches are stunning and rugged. They are not a lie on the sand and soak up the sun beach. But they are a photographers paradise. Thanks for sharing your adventures

When you hiking this trail be sure and hang your food....high. In all my years of hiking, I have never come across such crafty and fast raccoons. I turned my back for 10 seconds and lost my entire dinner to those bandits! My fault and a lesson re-learned.

Cat! You can’t sign off your videos without your beautiful “bye bye.” I always get a lump in my throat because it’s like a kiss and the sweet “goodnight” from my mom when i was a little girl. Ah, anyway, so great to see the PNW beach & ocean & animals.

Breathtaking Pacific coast. Being from the East coast the ocean rock formations are different & beautiful from what I have seen. Great video and hope there is more to come. 😊👍🏻🙋🏼‍♀️
