  • The good and the bad points of the Triumph Speedmaster from an owners perspective.
    I have owned my 2019 Triumph Speedmaster for 6 months now and done over 7000 miles, touring through Europe. The Speedmaster has its good points and its bad points! It is one of the best cruiser motorcycles and I believe the most beautiful motorcycle in the world!
    Its Triumph classic looks and retro style, is it the best Triumph Bonneville?
    A powerful 1200cc engine, and looks to die for. What could possibly be bad about this motorcycle?

    Add a small dab of “Locktight” to your mirror bolt, it is available in different versions the blue locktight I believe is what your looking for! Take the bolt out completely ad a small dab on the treads , reinstall

      Interesting ! I’ve actually got bar ends on my 2022 T120. I changed mine. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think they’re designed to continually do that all the time. Personally I wouldn’t advise it.
      I’ve never seen anyone continually do that. I seek your point of view and the nice channel guy.

    Fantastic video! It is one of the more useful review videos of the Speedmaster that I have seen! Other videos are great, but they’re all very similar; they share the statistics, mention the ride and the torque, etc. and obviously the looks, which are stunning, but they aren’t able to give you the good, the bad, and the ugly the way an owner can after 7000+ miles! Thank you so much for this! My brand new speedy will be in my driveway within a couple of months hopefully, so I will see how I feel after 7000 miles and compare my thoughts to yours. :-) Ciao Bella!

    A great review, thanks. Whenever I 'lust' after other bikes, I always - as Arsene Wenger almost once said - come back to the Speedmaster 1200 in the garage. I agree about rust - I have become a major buyer of AC50. I also keep a mirror tool with me...if I had one other criticism of the bike, it would be the 11 litre tank. Other than that, it's ..a brilliant bike.

    Good review. I have T120 Bonnie with the same bags as yours. I solved my luggage problem by purchasing a set of LOMO waterproof bags (very inexpensive if you live in the UK). And I use them when I need more room. They look good, are likely twice the size, if not more, of the Triumph bags, and come off the bike in seconds when I get back home and return to my smaller bags.

    Appreciate this honest review. As a senior rider, I've been looking for a somewhat trimmer bike for shorter distance rides. Owned many bikes over the years including half dozen Harleys but looking for a bike a little easier to handle. Your description of the bike and how it handles, plus my attraction to the looks of the Speedmaster, seems to steering me in this direction. I've had a previous modern Triumph (96 Sprint 900) and was very pleased with it. Looking forward to a traditional Triumph Speedy in my future. Thanks

    I agree with your view of the looks of the Speedmaster. It’s one of the few bikes I have owned that stir my soul every time I see it. I sometimes think It is the bike I have waited my whole life for. My only gripe is the lumpy throttle at slow speeds making slow turns a bit of a pain. Once the 2 year warranty is past I will have it remapped to solve this. Still the best bike I have ever owned.

    I really love the bike! I've had my 2018 Speedmaster for just 4 months now and I'm loving it to death, I commute to work on the bike more than my car these days. I actually did change the handlebars though. Not that I don't like the swept back beach handlebars, but I decided to go with the black high handlebars and then installed some bar end mirrors. I like having my arms more straight out rather than sitting low. And it completely transforms the look and character of the bike. It still retains it's British roots but it now looks more "British American" so to speak. Cheers from Houston Texas

    I replaced the stock mirrors with the Triumph teardrop mirrors, using a few drops of locktite blue on the bolt threads, the mirrors stems do not protrude out as far as the stock mirrors and you still get a fairly good rear view, I hadn't given the plastic speedo housing to much thought, the harley's I owned previously had the tank mounted speedo, which took your eyes further off the road (to check the speed) than Speedmaster speedo and the chrome housing made it blinding if the sun hit it, so I was quite happy with the speedmasters speedo in front of the bars and black, overall I'm happy as with the Speedmaster it is a great fun bike to ride....I've had several favourable comments from people about the look of the bike, one guy and his wife were absolutely impressed to the teeth with the bike and they thought I had restored a 50's model Trump....

    • @redangrevival
      @redangrevival  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      O nice they could work well (the tear drop mirrors). Yup that is a great point, with the speedo, a chrome surround might give bad glare from the sun. I suppose they thought of that and fixed it by going for the black surround 👍
      Haha I have had that several times now!! People thinking it is a restored classic bike. Shocked when you tell them it is a 2019 model!

    The Speedmaster is definately a looker, that is for sure! I have very limited experience, but have already found out that comfort is very important for long treks. Presumably the reason one mirror keeps geting loose is because the wind will tighten the right one and loosen the left one? Perhaps Triumph should have reverse threaded the left one? Then it too would get tightened by the wind pressure while riding? Thanks for the review!

    • @redangrevival
      @redangrevival  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      O yes she is!! haha. Yup comfort is so important for long trips, there is nothing worse than being uncomfortable to ruin your beautiful trip. That is a very good point, it might be. I think maybe not just because the mirror is fine until I have to pull it in, then it goes all loose! I love your train of though though.
      It is a really little annoying problem! I will find a way. Cheers

    I have the 2018 Speedmaster. The discoloration on the engine covers is because they have a clearcoat finish. The aluminum is not corroding, it is the clearcoat that is scratching and discoloring. I replaced all engine and valve covers with the OEM Triumph chromed covers. No problems with the chrome covers - but you have to like chrome. I also replaced the stock seat with a custom Corbin seat with backrest - a vast improvement over the stock seat. I tried the Triumph OEM Longhaul wind screen but it caused too much buffeting so instead I added a Dart Flyscreen which works well. I have two other cycles, a 2010 Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad and a 2008 Yamaha Royal Star Venture. I love all 3 bikes but if I could only have one bike it would be the Triumph. The Speedmaster is one sweet motorcycle.

    • @redangrevival
      @redangrevival  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that, it is good to know 👍 Very pleased it isn't the aluminium corroding!!
      I am looking into getting them powder coated. I was going to get a Corbin seat but it was a little over budget at the time. They look beautiful and very comfortable.

    Mirror problem: try using some lock tight on the threads and then tighten up to the recommended torque setting. Also, just for info, that is a Torx key you are using. Great bike, will definitely add to shortlist. I had the same thing happen with one of my mirrors on my old R1200GS. great review, agreed with all, and how I love my speedy too. I originally went to buy an Indian Scout- (previously in a vulcan 900 and Vstar 950t) I came home with a Triumph- best decision! Love the handling, easy Clutch, cruise control, awesome getting 60miles per gallon! my only downside is Lube- which i get my husband to do now, and I still get rain in my face even with the windshield..I made a few changes: Triumph windshield, High bars, Mid controls(i'm short) Teardrop mirrors, which my left one came loose in the highway & had to hold it while riding in the rain.i didn't use any special tightener, it's still secure.Corbin solo seat, really helped-also using Cbow mount luggage. I'm shopping for my 2nd bike- as much as some of my riding group friends might feel more comfortable with me on a HD😳well it might just be a Tiger-low... we will see..

From what I have read the cat will provide 'back pressure" for the outflow, but when removed the increased airflow causes the engine to run lean and can have a negative effect on the motorcycles ride-ability, mostly noticeable in lower rpm range where the bike can develop a on/off like throttle action after a decat. Not sure if that is what is causing your issue, but thought I would let you know about it.... Anyway, love your channel, and your laid back and knowledge based approach to reviews. Keep them coming! Chow Bella!

      If you start your engine cold and let run on idle for 5 minutes it’s computer will remap itself. Maybe it will solve that problem. Mine is decat and has X installed between the 2 pipes and it is very linear all up to 4500 rpm at every gear.

    I think the action of pulling in your wing mirror is loosening it. The right one doesn't have the issue because it goes the other way - loosening then tightening again.
    I really don't think they are designed to be pulled in and out, though.
    I think you can buy after market mirrors that are designed to fold in and out.

    I bought mine in May. Already have rust on the chrome wheel rims. Be aware also that sitting straight up riding positions combined with hard rear shock can cause serious damage to your back on rough road surfaces as every bump and jolt travels up your spine. I’d love my Speedmaster if it wasn’t crippling me. Once it’s hurt you it will hurt you every time you take it out. Give it at least an hour’s test ride before you buy. You’ll find out what I’m talking about.

    I never had a cruiser bike and this one is tempting because of the beautiful general outfit. I’m 5ft/11. So yo think that I will feel a bit cramped on it?
    I tried the Scrambler 1.2 XC and I felt it was perfect for my height and body size. But I didn’t felt very well on the T120, besides the long seat that was permitting to slide back a little to get a better riding position. I switched from a 2013 Yamaha FJR to a 2020 Speedmaster. I'm a bit vertically challenged and have a nagging hamstring injury so I needed to get a bit smaller bike. I have always loved Triumph's and get tired of the "Harley culture" in the US so it was a nice lateral move. I gave up a lot of horsepower but I've found I don't really miss it that much and the Triumph handles so well that fun factor is still there. Sure I can't cruise at 120mph all day but I couldn't do that on the Yamaha without collecting "performance awards." After changing to the comfort seating and adjusting the monoshock the ride isn't too harsh anymore and I would not trade comfort for handling anyway. I suspect aftermarket seating might be in order to please the wife but I love the look of the Triumph saddles versus anything out there. Triumph gets an F as far as luggage options for this bike. To tour in the US I need lockable luggage so I went to Hepco & Becker and their C-Bow system of bags. I now have both messenger style and leather panniers. I also got the luggage rack and padded backrest so I can use bags to carry extra gear. I like the cruise control and the road/rain traction settings and don't really mind the plastic rimmed speedo. I would like an optional touring tank so one can ride longer guess I was spoiled from riding Kawasaki & Yamah sport tourers. The mirrors are adequate but could be larger. Overall it is a really fun bike to just "go for a ride" on and adequate for touring. It took me awhile to get accustomed to the forward controls but I not only am getting used to it but enjoy it. I can see me riding this for a long time.

    Each motorcycle has its own good and bad points but I've found that the lack of self canceling turn signals is a major annoyance!

    If that doesn't work - find a wing bolt that you can tighten without the tool - you might need to have one made to have both the correct threads/length and wings big enough to really torque down. - Or just keep using the wrench 😎

    Speedmaster has the looks and was in my shortlist to buy. For me 3 things let it down as the final choice. First was the measly 12lt fuel tank. What were Triumph thinking when they put such a small tank on a 1200cc bike when the design brief was to make a cruising/touring motorcycle. Secondly was the lack of lockable luggage in the available accessories. Which means trusting your fellow man when the leave the bike unattended somewhere e.g. coffee, sightseeing, when you are out touring/riding. That will never end well. Lastly is the very average passenger accommodation. Even in comfort spec the pillion saddle is so small it would only suit a ballerinas bottom. I ended up buying a Moto Guzzi 1400 California Touring Edition. 21lt of fuel, lockable hard panniers and glorious passenger accommodation. Like the Speedy it has the looks and the street cred along with quality lineage.

      Hi Richard, the 12 ltr fuel tank isn't that bad, I'm getting 23k's to the litre, considering the HD streetbob has a 114 ci motor and has a 13.2 ltr tank, fuel injection has given bikes fairly good fuel economy, I normally stop fuel up and a coffee about 160k's....this old body of mine does not want to do what it used too LOL

    What product did you use to was that caused the tarnishing. I once used Mucoff on one of my bikes and after the first was it did the same and that set the rust off. Some cleaning products are too harsh.
    But I must also add the best wash ever for me has been Simoniz with Carnuuba wax OMG gleaned after that with little effort. Was hand dry gleaming.

    • @redangrevival
      @redangrevival  ปีที่แล้ว

      I was on tour in France and pushed for time, so I took the bike to a hand wash!!! Very bad idea, as the soap was acidic. My mistake and it will not happen again haha
      Now I just use warm water and a small amount of fairy liquid, seems to do a great job 👍. I also get my bike professionally treated with ACF-50 3 times a year. It is an amazing product, highly recommend it.

    Re. the high revs dead zone I don't think the 2022 one I have suffers so much from that - I find it has loads of power through quite a long range when overtaking for example.
    I guess with the 2018 you'll just have to get used to changing gear mid-overtake?
    At least the gear charges are very easy and smooth!

    • @redangrevival
      @redangrevival  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I know I don't think they are tuned differently. It is not a biggy, mainly feel it in second gear coming out of a corner or round about. Maybe they did change it for 2022. It is generally fine for over takes, but it was not designed to be the quickest bike anyway, so all good .

    Nice review. But as a fellow tourer, I have put 12,000 miles on the speedmaster through some of the greatest national parks in the western USA. I agree with most all of your points, good and bad.. but the most annoying issue to me is the front fender is way too short sputtering All sorts of road debris right into the radiator... I have put an e tended on the fender.. and have also notices since putting it on that my boots stay drier in the wet..the bike generally stays cleaner when I go on a muddy road... not sure what triumph wasthinking with such a pu y little fender.. cheers

    I'm hoping to buy a new 2022 Speedmaster within the next few days, and I'm wondering how it is riding with a passenger? I'll have my girlfriend with me on many trips this summer and I'm wondering how it is to ride with a passenger. Thanks!

    • @redangrevival
      @redangrevival  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jason, I actually haven't done too much riding with a passenger. If I am being totally honest I would say it is that good for riding with a passenger! The rear seat is very small and hard. If you are going to do it I recommend speccing the rear back rest and getting the comfort pillion seat and back rest. This would make it much more comfortable.
      Also on this point the rear suspension does suffer going over bumps in the road.
      I would recommend test riding one with your girlfriend before purchasing if possible 👍 Cheers

    I’m looking for a bike to do some lite touring on… I test road the speed master the other day… and love the torque…I saw your review first so when I road it I rung its neck a little bit and had no fade off really… power just kept going till I wanted to change gears…..I’m still looking.. the thing that will keep me from getting this bike is that crazy 12 liter tank… why why why triumph..?? Come on 4 more liters wouldn’t make it look bad…. The other thing is not being able to put a center stand on it…..if I can’t have a center stand… make it a belt drive…I think everyone would like that…my other option is a royal enfield super meteor 650…even they have a 15 liter tank…I don’t think I’ll be happy with the power but at least I won’t spend my touring time in the gas station….and the rust issue… that’s another story…. Come on triumph step up to the plate..

      Yes … but for that money…. It should be beautiful and functional… come on .. no center stand.? For the money ok a belt drive… I read a German company makes after market tanks.. bigger..and then there’s the corrosion issue…ok… I can clean… I love the motor.. and the look… but all the other stuff on top might push me away… Harley is an option but the country I’m in wants to overcharge me 5,000 usd from the price I can get the same bike in America….. and they make Harley’s here now…so my search continues…
